I'm Mexican. There are many mistakes in the movie. The actors accent doesn't sound like Mexican at all. Funny thing is they use Mexican expressions sounding like Venezuelans or Colombians. They all supposed to be Mexicans in the story, but just one actress speaks like us (the only Mexican of the cast). Most actors can't sing and the songs don't seem to be made by musicians since there are barely rhymes in spanish and melodies are weird. You don't have to be musician to notice most actors are out of tune. That's just technical stuff. I'm not even getting into the plot of the movie. See how bad it is?

@@cinemariiaZoe’s character wasn’t Mexican. She was a Dominican that studied in Mexico and stayed there. Selena’s character is not supposed to be Mexican either, she was a Chicana (Mexican/American)

@@jenniferdecamps4057 If I remember correctly, Zoe's character was raised in Mexico and studied there (Veracruz to be more specific). Selena's character married to a Mexican and even her kids speak spanish fluently in a couple scenes. For a character surrounded by spanish speakers, she does a terrible job.

      I agree.
I am puerto rican and I have live in mexico for a couple of years. The Spanish is not good at all, sometimes it feels that it comes from Google Translate.

As a mexican, I find impossible to empathize with a character that makes his living by hurting our society just because "of the expression of her eyes that capture tragedy of her journey".

The geopolitical context currently surrounding the relationship between Mexico and the United States offers much for Mexicans to consider regarding this film and its potential political agenda. One thing that the allied nations of France and the United States share is a history of neocolonialist and imperialist tendencies, underpinned by Eurocentric ideas rooted in white supremacist ideologies. These ideologies place the West as superior to the Global South, maintaining a paternalistic vision and dominance over the latter. This mindset is reflected in the creation of this film, which is one of the reasons many Mexicans are upset.
For example, the film addresses a serious issue in a biased manner, failing to acknowledge that the problem isn't solely Mexico’s; it's also the responsibility of other countries. A critical detail, such as the fact that over 70% of the weapons fueling violence in Mexico originate from the United States, is glaringly omitted. Mexico’s image has been tarnished by the media for decades, particularly by Hollywood, which has perpetuated an anti-Mexican narrative and contributed to a negative portrayal of the country and its people. Many Hollywood films, for instance, have used sepia-yellow filters to make Mexico appear backward, dirty, inferior, and underdeveloped. Nearly all films focusing on Mexico dwell on its negative aspects, and this movie is no different.
The lack of nuance in its portrayal of Mexico contributes to an anti-Mexican discourse driven by a Eurocentric, white supremacist perspective. It's troubling that in a world where white Western countries dominate, these very nations are the ones applauding and awarding this film, further perpetuating the negative stereotypes of Mexico.
This movie is deeply offensive and insulting to Mexico. This criticism stems from various aspects, including the selection and casting choices. In an interview, the casting director was asked why, if the movie is set in Mexico and revolves around the country, there was no Mexican cast. She responded by saying they traveled to Mexico but couldn't find any talented actors for the film. Considering that Mexico has millions of residents, claiming they couldn't find suitable actors is not only highly discriminatory but also more troubling when you think about the fact that the film profits from portraying the pain and suffering of Mexico.

In the geopolitical context it is very strange to seek medical support for Emilia in Israel as the country is not famous for this type of surgery.

I went in with the same feeling. I took the negative reception with a grain of salt and tried to engage with the material. Ultimately I agreed with most of the criticisms - I didn't like the film at all haha.

I don't have a problem with the blending of genres - a crime drama musical sounds good to me - I thought London Road (2015) was pretty good - but Emilia Perez is a pretty infuriating watch, mostly in the way it stands to lecture us on things it doesn't seem to have made much effort to understand.

I just watched Emilia Perez on Netflix. I had heard it was not very good, but I thought it couldn't be that bad. Well, it reminded me of the straight to video movies that my college professor used to film. I really did not like the song about transition. I thought it was lewd. And I didn't like the idea that Emilia cleansed herself of crimes via the transition. I also did not like the parade for a gangster, who preyed on his own people.

It’s not very difficult to understand why Emilia Pérez decides to help people. In my view, it was not because she had changed completely, that her morals had changed. As a drug lord she had power, and she wanted that feeling back, she wanted to be appreciated, because that probably gave her a similar feeling to what she had when she was feared. She helped people because that was what a woman could do to be appreciated and have influence, at least that’s what she thought. But she did not really change, and her attempts to control her ex-wife and children show that. I liked the film, it’s bold and unique. Not the film of the year and not worthy of 13 Oscar nominations, of course, but when we remember that Amy Adams was not even nominated for Arrival, we should simply forget about the Oscars. Emilia Pérez has its flaws, but it’s a good film, by an incredibly courageous and creative director, that’s all.

This is a really unfortunate movie. I feel like the Academy is inadvertently deeply insulting trans people, as this film will be historic for all the wrong reasons. I can't imagine what it would be like to be vying for representation, then when a "trans movie" is set to sweep the Oscars, its a terrible movie clearly undeserving of it. Awful, grading music, characters reduced to little more than caricatures of their respective cultures, a truly awful core message that fails to grasp the reality that Emilia Perez will never be a sympathetic character due to being a murderous cartel monster. Bad story, bad themes, bad writing, bad songs, bad singing, bad representation of Mexico, bad Spanish... bad movie. An Emilia Perez Oscar sweep will likely go down as the worst Oscar winner in the show's history. I don't blame the movie for being a bad movie, bad movies happen. I blame film critics and especially the Academy for completely selling out their values.

Ok , I thought all the shadow and hate came from the representation issues and transphobia. But watching some pieces now I really understand... looks like some random skit from a Family Guy Live Action. It kinda really sucks! Worst musical ever - though i see the challenge on the theme.

(For the non french speaking people, my comment is purely ironic)

Being a trans lesbian myself, this movie is so horrible.
I can't believe the producers of this film had Studio Ghibli ties (Why Not Productions also coproduced The Red Turtle: Aru Shima no Monogatari with Studio Ghibli; while The Veterans' parent company Goodfellas coproduced The Boy and the Heron, Arrietty, Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, My Neighbor Totoro, and every other Studio Ghibli film that isn't Grave of the Fireflies).
Also, to make Emilia Pérez's awards sweeps, I personally headcanon that every award that every Emilia Pérez wins and nomination will go to Sonic 3 instead.
Maria Robotnik's actress Alyla Browne deserves all the Best Supporting Actress wins more than Zoe Saldaña. Not as much as Margaret Qualley in The Substance, but Alyla Browne is better than Saldaña.

It’s complete garbage regardless of how it portrays one’s culture or whatever the hell representation means. It’s a horrible movie and an even worse musical and the fact that it received 13 Oscar nominations is proof of how lost Hollywood is and how out of touch it is with reality.

Oh boy... Its bad on the acting.. Selena Gómez is just over reacting the whole time.. The musical part has not sense or are just hilarious in spanish and english... About the story... Well, it just reflect a real social problem in a way that looks like is not so bad. Honestly in Mexico the polemic is not about the Emilia Character is about how the portrait de narcos, and human dissapearences.

the movie is total trash, remove all the story or what it is about, then you have just a terrible musical simple as that, a musical with no good music is a failure, i can YT search a Indian movie like Bazingar or Dilwale and even without me understanding the language i like them, why? great music, that simple really, bad music = bad movie.
