    this thing was copy-striked to oblivion so i had to upload a billion different versions. finally the film companies cleared the strike with this one. apologies for the tv border - which, i’m on a trip now so i had to hastily edit in last minute. around three shots will have it disappear before the clip 😭

    This movie wanted to be a love letter to Mexican and trans people, and it ended up being like a ransom note. Great video!

    • @quirkyjoeAnimated
      @quirkyjoeAnimated День тому +3

      I think it wanted to cynically use those things as empty drivers for its limited story. It feels like love letters were pretty far from the intention.

    • @champigranja1179
      @champigranja1179 День тому +3

      I seriously doubt it was intended to be a "love letter" to Mexican people. The director wasn't even interested in our culture. He just thought it would be cool to portray something exotic from his own views

    I'm mexican and trans, and the reactions of other trans women towards this aspect of the film aren't that negative - but that's cuz the movie itself is REALLY disrespectful and insensitive towards the voilence in our contry, and that has taken most of the conversation. Emilia's character reminds me of actual trans women in her 40's, and is kinda realictic that she sees her identity as linked to a medical and binary transition. Even her outburst towards her ex is realictic, considering she most likely killed dozens of people and had hundreds of other killed as a drug capo, and those "habits" don't go away. Hiding her HRT and separating from her family make sense in the context of a narco wanting to stay alive. I'm not saying that this movie's portrayal of trans people is good (it's terrible), but it's the least problematic part of it.

  • @reyalt44
    @reyalt44 День тому +15

    As a Trans Mexican person this is not only wrong and highly disrespectful but also here in Mexico the missing people situation is huge, important and nothing to mess around the way this “movie” presents to portray, I’m very sorry again that you found boring the whole missing people situation, that’s something that should be educational

    So... just for you to know, the infamous "me duele la p1nche vulv4 de solo pensar en tí" (in Spanish is so unnatural and hillarious) it´s just a bad translation... Or so I think. They tried to say (I think they tried at least) "my pu$$y aches for you" which doesn´t make sense in Spanish and sounds awful in English.
    I´m starting to think they wrote the whole movie in English, because once you translate some sentences of the movie to English it kinda, sort of makes sense... or maybe I´m being to generous.

    I’m really glad you pointed out the transmedicalism this film perpetuates! I’m so sick of so-called trans positive media focusing almost entirely on the surgical/medical aspect of being trans and acting like the physical aspect of one’s gender identity is the whole point. I kinda liked the bit of the film where Emilia talks to the (granted, incredibly transphobic) surgeon about her internal struggle with her identity, but it stinks that the film barely ever touches back on that (kinda like how it rarely ever treats the titular character like the main character)

    • @dee_is_tired
      @dee_is_tired День тому

      while it's *correct* that it's a transmedicalist point of view but it's also a realistic one in a lot of other countries, a *lot* of people here (Brazil) consider surgery the goalpost, a lot of people need surgery not just for themselves but to be accepted socially and culturally

    I’m not trans, so forgive me if I make any mistakes in my takes, but I was not a fan of this film either. It felt like it completely misunderstood what it means to be trans, and also seems like it’s more focuses on pandering and showing things on a surface level than actually properly representing the trans community.

    I like the Emilia Perez commentary, but I have to say, I really don't like how you casually spoil elements of other movies with zero warning. I have Dressed to Kill and The Danish Girl on my watchlist, and really could have done without knowing those things... I unfortunately have to stop watching this video now (around 5 and a half mins in) because I just don't want anything else on my watchlist spoiled haha. Please take this into consideration in the future.

    • @michaelangelo2192

      @just2film Yes, I mean it's probably just better in both of the cases I mentioned to exclude the examples altogether. You can make the point that trans characters are often portrayed negatively as killers in movies and/or killed off by the end without giving specific examples. If a point is more vague (ie. trans characters are portrayed negatively in _____ film) then referencing other films is fine because that's not spoiler specifc. But I think if u ever delve into plot specifics (who lives, who dies, plot reveals etc.) it's best not to talk about movies that aren't explicitly brought up at the beginning of the video. Don't worry, I trust that you will learn from this mistake!

    While I disagree with the trans medical message of the movie I do think that if Emilia preferred he/him pronouns before she transitioned physically/ medically that’s a valid choice. I think a lot of older transgender people see physical presentation as more important than a personal feeling. The issue is painting that as the universal experience and not having a deeper discussion on someone’s personal experience of being trans.

    Literally everyone I know who has seen it likes or loves it. I find it so curious how its detractors cannot let go of their need to link arms and shit on it repeatedly. You reviewed it four months ago, yes? You had negative things to say about it in a Golden Globes video, yes? And now another video. There’s something deeply insidious about cancel culture and how those who participate in it get addicted to the need for the hatred echo chamber and how self-righteous it makes them feel.

    • @taequilasilver7183
      @taequilasilver7183 День тому +1

      I doubt any of the people you know are native mexicans. Mexicans hate cancel culture but they are literally the ones who are trashing the movie the most because oh big surprise, Mexicans dont like when white people from first world countries use narcos (people responsible for human tr@fficking, r@pe, disappearances
      , kidnapping, etc) as something exotic and pat themselves on their back for doing a movie where they show the mothers and families of n@rcos victims kissing the hand of one of them and thanking a n@rco for "helping". So yeah, not a single mexican likes the movie and most trans people also hate it. If the movie is about mexico and trans people but none of them like it then the movie must suck.

    • @juanitacanon3120
      @juanitacanon3120 9 годин тому +5

      Almost everyone in Latin America, especially Mexico hate it. So if the people this movie it’s trying to represent don’t feel well represented and have valid criticism, the hate goes beyond “cancel culture” and maybe it’s just not really a great movie.

    • @julianmars8968
      @julianmars8968 9 годин тому

      “cancel culture” bruh. its a film that’s *supposedly* tackling these real world topics in Mexico regarding forced disappearances, the cartel, and a trans woman’s journey. Much of the criticism comes from the communities depicted saying that the film deals with these things in a insensitive and gross way. That’s not cancel culture, that’s criticism. Every film gets criticism. Especially because its currently being so acclaimed and awarded. Im sure there are people jumping on the bandwagon just because but I think it’s weird to write off the very nuanced and real conversations being had as “cancel culture”.

    • @OldBluesChapterandVerse
      @OldBluesChapterandVerse 8 годин тому

      @ “Almost everyone…”? Really? Do you have the data on this? I’d venture a guess and say a majority of people in Latin America probably haven’t even seen it. How do we account for the fact that Guillermo del Toro and Issa Lopez - two of the best-respected filmmakers from Mexico - love it? Stop making generalizations that you can’t support. It does nothing but make you look like a moron.
