This guy speaks VERY well. It's like his thoughts are formulated in his head so quickly that he's able to spit out exactly what's on his mind in a very clear and cohesive manner without pause. This is a gift. You cannot just practice hard everyday to make yourself become like that; you either have that ability or you don't. I'm so jealous!
It's charisma. And it can indeed by learnt(or learned if you prefer) like a skill. Some people have it naturally but like all natural talent it can be honed if need be. In most cases it does. Practiced skill will usually out do raw un-focused talent in the long run.
He mentioned his love of capes all the time, even in recent interviews. He's just a big fan of them but as the guy above said, Spawn came from his childhood.
God damn, watching McFarlane draw and explain what essentially made him famous makes me wanna go back and check out all those old issues from 30 years ago. And holy shit, starting at 9:50 the level of prescience was amazingly accurate and prophetic.
6:55 Stan is enjoying this, and it’s wholesome asf. I love the energy Todd brings, and even Stan does, he really allowed Todd to talk, and he was smiling the whole time, Todd really does have a way with people, and I commend him for that. We love ya Todd, keep on being great.
It's so funny. I grew up in the 90s and saw the artwork in cartoons and advertisements and such, but was too poor to have a comic hobby despite being obsessed with superheroes, Spider-Man specifically. To see how Todd basically single-handedly created the Spider-Man of my childhood is insane to watch. And his humility and purity of heart for the art of it rather than glory or activism is so refreshingly.....old school
Every time he faces an obstacle .. he overcomes it. He learns how do to the things necessary ... like writing, for example, for Spawn. Just an incredible, driven person.
It's funny how marvel and todd got into a argument over the web of spiderman and a year later they used that web in the animated series and then it stuck with spiderman great art todd :D
Marvel is egotistical read interviews with them at there movies they plan sequels on there movies before it hits theaters what happened to fantastic four reboot sequel they planned it got cancelled after they found out it sucked
Adding my own two cents into the conversation. Something about many artists choosing one plane is to show that they can draw the entire anatomy. Many have been told that they need to learn to draw it, so it becomes instilled in their minds that they just have to show that they can do it properly. I've also been stuck in that mindset many times.
Here's the key ... first, you learn how to do it 'by the book'. Once you have that down, you can make it your own ... make that outrageous (perhaps) perspective. It's classic 'learning to draw'. Learn basics from the masters, and once your craft is honed, let your style run free. You need to learn the rules before you can break them masterfully.
You have to consider what a lot of these artists were feeling towards Marvel at the time, and they still agreed to come on a show with Stan about drawing and comics. This was def around the time of the Image Exodus, if you will, but they obviously didn't blame Stan for any of that. Also.... spaghetti webbing is the shit! And yes, Todd, you're one of the Spider-man greats, as far as I'm concerned.
McFarlane and Spawn changed my life at 10 years old. I began to focus my art and started my comic collection with Spawn issue #1. I sincerely love this Man like a father. Art Dad.
These videos are treasures! ❤ I've got so much love for these master creators of Spider-man material. So much talent, so much detail and care is what built my favorite super hero along side Batman.
McFarland introduced me to flexible s Spider-Man and the noodle webs. He also left Marvel because his comic of Spider-Man stabbing Juggernaut in the eye was too graphic and they tried to censor him. He made my favorite indie comic character Spawn.
I see that Spawn picture in the background. It's awesome that Stan Lee filmed this with the main guy that stuck the finger to Marvel. It really shows how much he respects Todd's style and vision.
Seeing Stan Lee, the most influential comic book publisher of all time look like a kid in a candy shop watching Todd explain his art really shows how important Todd himself is. Top 5 greatest comic book artists of all time imo
And he became famous for his Spiderman webs (and he complained air how much time they took), while Spawn uses chains (much easier to draw and give depth).
Todd and stan lee were the ones who made me want to read comics and draw because at the age of 8 I could not read I did not even want to read any the Children's books But when my dad took me to a comic book store everything changed I picked up my 1st comic and sat down and actually read it and I could not believe it.
Now I see why Todd felt like he was beyond marvel at the time! When Stan Lee flat states “Amazing” over a doodle, in Todd’s mind he’s like “Now pay me my money; and give me my credit for bringing Spider-Man into the modern era!”
Todd is right. I remember in the 90s when I saw his spiderman it was instantly intriguing compared to older versions but when I'm 7 years old i couldn't articulate why. I just knew it was awesome
Todd is right about different Spider-Man artists adding their own touch to the character such as bigger eyes and spaghetti webbing after Todd left Marvel what other Spider-Man artist that followed added their own spin on Spidey, not that many.
25 years later, Todd McFarlane is indeed one of the great Spider-man artists.
Very true...only second to Joe Quesada spidey. Can spot his spidey out from a crowd
I still mark barley better, especially in the 90s. My second choice would be John romita Sr.
Todd is number 1 he change the way that drew sideman
Joe Quesada's Spider-Man was fucking horrible! terrible Spidey artist.
Todd will ALWAYS be number 1 for best Spider-Man artist. He is my ALL time favorite. Also he freaking created Venom!!!! 😎👍💜💚❤💛💙
Stan seems to be enjoying himself more than usual in this one. I think he resonates with Todd's extroverted frankness.
Have you seen the Jim lee comic book greats
Two legends, love the way Todd explains his style, even Stan Lee is amaze the way Todd potraits Spider-man
Facts
I have never seen Stan Lee stay quite and listen to anyone like that. Especially in his 70s
Possibly because Todd speaks nonstop lol
*quiet. Go look up what "quite" means. Second grade English 🤡
This guy speaks VERY well. It's like his thoughts are formulated in his head so quickly that he's able to spit out exactly what's on his mind in a very clear and cohesive manner without pause. rsuriyop Anyone definitely can practice to become skilful like this, even if it takes years
It's charisma. And it can indeed by learnt(or learned if you prefer) like a skill. Some people have it naturally but like all natural talent it can be honed if need be. In most cases it does.
Practiced skill will usually out do raw un-focused talent in the long run.
I’m 34 and still can’t get my thoughts out in this way. It’s way I make art and music ... it’s the only way I can put myself out there
Todd is a mad scientist for sure lol
I can't get more than 5 or 6 words out before forgetting what word I'm trying to say.
McFarlane mastered perspective, which changed comic book history
Alley00Cat it drew my eye in 90s and keeps blowing me away
Stan was like.. Let him cook!
This is great.
Todd and Jim ruled over at image comics.
Stan Lee will always be my hero for creating my other heroes growing up
My god… you can just tell this is what McFarlane was born to do. Look how incredibly passionate and naturally invested he is on the video
Thank you Stan Lee. You will be missed. RIP
Love stan just listening to him talk, and actually listening. Not waiting to say the next thing. Total respect. Love TM so much.
Todd explaining depth perception and how he works is magical
I like when he starts talking about capes. You know spawn has been rattling around his head for a while lol
Todd supposedly conceived of Spawn while in his teens, like any kid they like making their own little superheroes.
I thought exactly the same thing. Just Amazing
Love how he used to make these little sounds while drawing, even as a young man.
Todd is clearly a master of his craft. So many thoughts and decisions about every little detail.
Todd must've walked out of that interview 10 feet tall so proud of himself knowing the greatest of all time admires him to death
For real
6:55 Stan is enjoying this, and it’s wholesome asf. I love the energy Todd brings, and even Stan does, he really allowed Todd to talk, and he was smiling the whole time, Todd really does have a way with people, and I commend him for that. We love ya Todd, keep on being great.
Two great friends. RIP Stan Lee.
Todd’s Dividends became priceless. Thank you again Todd!
The sketchbook used by McFarlane must be worth a fortune by now.
wow todd looks so young here. stan looks the same as today.
Not anymore
@@2.25.am_7 oh god man why'd you have to say that

The guy’s the Steve Vai of comic drawing.
Todd his humble but still honest about everything. It's awesome, much respect. 👌
It's funny how marvel and todd got into a argument over the web of spiderman and a year later they used that web in the animated series and then it stuck with spiderman great art todd :D
pepOnshow Why did they argue over it?
they didn't like him changing the status quo.
Marvel is egotistical read interviews with them at there movies they plan sequels on there movies before it hits theaters what happened to fantastic four reboot sequel they planned it got cancelled after they found out it sucked
@@dragonball3166 that is more of the MCU Controlled by Fiege than Marvel comics from the 80s and 90s
@@dragonball3166 your comment makes no sense
Dude, it’s amazing how after all these years the guy still talks pretty much the same damn way😂😂😂😂
I forgot that I had the play back speed at 1.5x. I was like boy Mr. Mcfarlane really knows how to speak fast lol.
I bet it sounds the same
The fact that stan lee stands next and listen and watch you draw n listen to your philosophy .. it says it all ! Todd McFarlane the genius
It's funny he keeps referring to all of his pupils as "kids"....TODD is still a kid here! lol
woot, Todd is like thirty years old in this
ban_one
Exactly. lol He was literally 30yro when this first aired.
He was 30 years old.
i love how Stan is genuinely interested in his own artists.
My two favorite people in comics in one video
Two Legends Wow. Im like a kid just being a sponge. Im enjoying this like Stan Lee. This is one of my favorite videos EVER!
man Todd is such a genius
Never seen Stan so composed and respectful… ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Todd: "I believe in giving credit where credit is due"
BURN?
From the dude who wouldn't give Neil Gaiman his credit for his contributions to Spawn? Ya, burn... 😂

Todd McFarlane is great and I love seeing him with Stan
Stan Lee has a great sens of humor:)
amazing artist and amazing writer all in one shot

Plus, spawn had the biggest cape ever. So no worries about anatomy haha!
awesome advice from one of the greats. the two line technique is genius and a great tool to practice body angles with.

Spawn is legend, as is TM. Spawn *is* TM.
2:16 when you start realizing that the man is drawing the cover of asm #300 lmao.
I see that Spawn picture in the background. It's awesome that Stan Lee filmed this with the main guy that stuck the finger to Marvel. It really shows how much he respects Todd's style and vision.
wow, even back then, everything in Todd's world was up in here
spawn is in the background
Justin Cissell yea .. weird I wonder if he told Marvel you let me make this comic or I leave and take my friends with me.
Rest in paradise Stan Lee!
I used to love the Quasar comics in the late 80's early 90's and McFarlane did an awesome Quasar cover with him flying towards the reader.
I love these guys. Their interaction is so real and cool!!! 😊Also its very entertaining and rich in content.
The way he talks about it (even in the first 2 minutes) confirms what I already know and that is that this man is a genius
Two Marvel legends together. That is amazing!
Beautiful breakdown, incredible technique
Seeing Stan Lee, the most influential comic book publisher of all time look like a kid in a candy shop watching Todd explain his art really shows how important Todd himself is. Top 5 greatest comic book artists of all time imo
I love the cape talk and then he went on to create Spawn a character with the most iconic cape!
And he became famous for his Spiderman webs (and he complained air how much time they took), while Spawn uses chains (much easier to draw and give depth).
This is why older comics will be worth more than newer ones.
Can anyone else hear some sort of ringing off this?
Bazz me
No you just have tinnitus
Yeah. Back then, audio quality wasn't great and you have to know that this is from a VHS. This happened often on tape.
yep, it's ringing
Very interesting and enjoyable to watch.
And all of these years later, Todd has become one of the best known comic artists of all time.
Todd and stan lee were the ones who made me want to read comics and draw because at the age of 8 I could not read I did not even want to read any the Children's books But when my dad took me to a comic book store everything changed I picked up my 1st comic and sat down and actually read it and I could not believe it.
Thankkssss!!!!!!! Exactaly What i needed!!
Legends.
This guys awesome!
Todd McFarlane, your dream has been realized. You are one of the greats that gets mentioned with all the other great artists on Spider-Man.
I love seeing the creator of spawn dressed like Mr. Rogers' stunt double 😂
Yeaaa todds detail got amaaaaazingly high. His Spidey was top NOTCH, #1.
Drawing by hand without tech. That is awesome.
He explains here why he loves capes which foreshadows future character Spawn where his cape is such a big part of his character.
Jeezzz what a master!
Insanely good lesson
Stan will always be the man.
The high pitch squeal throughout this video activated a sleeper agent sitting next to me…
Rock solid advice! Nail the basics.
He is a f@#%ing legend 🎉☻️
Both❤
Spawn was my all time fav as a kid!
My art teacher in elementary school loved comics and would give us exercises from this show.
Now I see why Todd felt like he was beyond marvel at the time!
When Stan Lee flat states “Amazing” over a doodle, in Todd’s mind he’s like “Now pay me my money; and give me my credit for bringing Spider-Man into the modern era!”
I miss this
Holy shit, this legend just revealed the biggest mystery of superheroes! Why did so many wear capes? They were easier to draw that way!!
That was a hell of a cliffhanger!
This, and the Session were trolling Stan. 😂😂
Doing waaaay more talking than drawing
Todd is right. I remember in the 90s when I saw his spiderman it was instantly intriguing compared to older versions but when I'm 7 years old i couldn't articulate why. I just knew it was awesome
Todd McFarlane, the best artist of our time. Imo.
I love how he kept refering to comics fans as "kids". I'm 52 and still a huge collector of everything batman related ^^
What an absolute goat
Coming soon to a comic shop near you!!! The latest creative endeavor from the mind behind Spawn.
RUTABAGA GUY!
Worked at Marvel but still kept mentioning the Competition in front of Mr Marvel himself
Todd out there blocking in poses in permanent marker, left-handed no less - truly one of the greats.
Todd is the man!
"They don't teach kinking in school..." - Stan Lee, circa 1991.
Good ol Tod. Cool guy!
10:08 its epic that Todd went so far that Stan Lee underestimated him.
I met him in I think 92 in San Jose and he signed a bunch of my comics.
❤very cool
I thought it was just a feel thing with him. I had no idea he had such a clear and rational method to his "madness".
10:06 He's certainly earned that right.
Todd is right about different Spider-Man artists adding their own touch to the character such as bigger eyes and spaghetti webbing after Todd left Marvel what other Spider-Man artist that followed added their own spin on Spidey, not that many.
McFarlane changed the way every Spider-Man artist would work after him.
