Todd changed the way hero’s look and gave them a more modern iconic look and Stan gave us the superhero’s we all love and for that they both will go down in history
Indeed he has, I hope someday that I can inspire people with my own creativity someday. I practice my art and writing a lot and have a lot to thank Stan the Man for as well as many others for giving me such a memorable childhood with superheroes. Stan will always be Marvel's Greatest Hero.
When you look at his daughter and go, aww that baby is so cute, and then you realize this person is grown up and older than you are now. Makes me feel old and young at the same time.
I just came across my old VHS tape of this the other day but no longer have a VCR. Probably haven’t watched this in almost 30 years. So really nice to see it again. They are both comic book legends in my book.
Forsure, he's always trying to name characters after people he knows...it makes it easier to not build personalities, when you can just throw a real person in an unreal situation.
The 90's were such a different time for the industry. Comic book artists were rock stars. Todd, Rob Liefeld, Jim Lee all caught their break around the same time and really shook up the industry, the boom and bust of comics happened, and now the industry is in shambles lol
Rob Liefeld just talked about Todd's non-existent trading card line on his podcast. "Why would you wanna sit in the UPPER DECK, when you could sit in the FRONT ROOOWWWW!!!!!"
This isn't a "Marvel" show. This a show hosted by Stan Lee that pretty much exclusively interviewed Image guys. Todd had already started Image by then. If you watch the other episodes with Rob and Todd they make little jokes about it.
frank Fontaino. That's the reason Todd left Marvel and deceived the other guy's to leave with him. HE WANTED TO RUN MARVEL COMICS. Couldn't get his way then quit.
You should draw from both life AND comic books. Just observe what reality holds, and then you juxtapose the two. If you draw from life, eventually you can exaggerate and make anything pop or look cool, not just what you see in comics.
Addi S. Koon Todd Mcfarlane is a huge fan of him and a friend, of course he cares what he says, he’s just comfortable enough to have a casual conversation with him.
Stan and Todd both great but one humble and once ignorant but both became prof Stan lee will last longer in history but Todd will be richer when his alive with less heros
It makes sense he focused on one body part per week if you spend hours and hours a day on one body part you can learn it well enough to draw it good. Take a couple months and presto. Then the rest of your life is improving
I've actually tried doing portraits of people and, no kidding, it took me a month before figuring out some techniqies of my own It's not really impossible as long as you put effort and time in it Also, having hundreds of bad artworks is better than having a few good artworks
I know I'm late, but I started with hands because they seemed the hardest and most expressive - in 2 weeks I went from boxing out forms and taking 20 minutes to set up outlines and still being disappointed with them, to being able to draw an expressive hand in 5 seconds without an outline or creating the simple forms. Their not photorealistic, obviously, but still 5 second comic ink drawings that actually look like a hands is better than I thought they would've been after such a short time. If you work real hard at a specific thing, you'll get it pretty quickly.
How did they end up with a Chinese baby ? But anyway, it was refreshing and inspired for Stan Lee to bring up the whole subject of hitting the right balance between following your passion, but also being rounded enough to get laid as well.
Spoiler alert! Todd does not actually draw anything. He does quick doodles and I've seen restroom graffiti look better. He has inked panel page done prior but doesn't show live talent.
RIP Stan the Man. Excelsior!
Todd changed the way hero’s look and gave them a more modern iconic look and Stan gave us the superhero’s we all love and for that they both will go down in history
Well...Stan didn't
I love the way Stan is so down to earth, humble, and actually seems like he gives a damn. Rest in peace Mr. Lee, you inspired many dreams of us all.
Indeed he has, I hope someday that I can inspire people with my own creativity someday. I practice my art and writing a lot and have a lot to thank Stan the Man for as well as many others for giving me such a memorable childhood with superheroes. Stan will always be Marvel's Greatest Hero.
Humble, right
I wish we had programs like this now!
Yeah
#putcomicbookgratesondisney+
really liked this interview, love todd's perspective on how to draw a scene, thank you 90's comic book nerd for posting this!
No problem man love these old vhs tapes.
When you look at his daughter and go, aww that baby is so cute, and then you realize this person is grown up and older than you are now. Makes me feel old and young at the same time.
take a shot everytime Todd says 'kids'
Well I didn’t expect Todd’s Wife with baby to show up. Wholesome
I just came across my old VHS tape of this the other day but no longer have a VCR. Probably haven’t watched this in almost 30 years. So really nice to see it again. They are both comic book legends in my book.
Todd's laugh 😂😂😂 what a couple of legends
"...capes that are 40 feet long"
Yep sounds about right
What an inspiring conversation! Love these guys!
8:12 i literally jumped off the chair , I've never seen Stan like that !
Stan lee is the definition of class, miss that man. Excelsior!!
before being a batman, christian bale was drawing spiderman
Take a moment and watch the My Name is Mud music video by Primus. Bale has had many careers before Batman
stan lee has so much respect for this guy
anyone else thinks Todd looks like Adam Sandler from the Wedding Singer?.....respect the art though
eriklane78 The classic 'mullet perm'. I have no room to talk... I had a bowl cut back then.
I was gonna say that, too. You beat me to it. LOL!
That's quite a McMullet
Todd's a cool dude. He kinda sounds like Kermit the frog to me haha
That laugh at the end 😂 14:23
These are fantastic. Thank you so much for sharing.
Will miss you Stan
R.I.P STAN LEE
Never realized he named Spawn's wife/daughter after his own.
Forsure, he's always trying to name characters after people he knows...it makes it easier to not build personalities, when you can just throw a real person in an unreal situation.
Not only that but he named spawns wife Wonder after his wife as well
Al Simmon is named after his friend.
I wish Stan Lee still wrote for Spider-Man when Todd was drawing them. Imagine the unlimited power
The 90's were such a different time for the industry. Comic book artists were rock stars. Todd, Rob Liefeld, Jim Lee all caught their break around the same time and really shook up the industry, the boom and bust of comics happened, and now the industry is in shambles lol
Still in shambles
Manga killing comics. Manga focuses on storytelling, comics focus on politics. A real shame.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the panel Stan referred to was from page 3 of "Behind the Dreadful Door!" which appeared in "Strange Tales".
I had these videos on VHS. Love Todd's hair.
Bryan D Dass maybe 1992
Little did she knew it was forever! hahaha @Todd McFarlane
We miss you Stan!
This series should be required viewing at marvel and dc
2 greats. Good video.
Stan Lee is like Hugh Hefner’s cooler brother
Me when I saw Amazing 300 at the comic shop 8:12
So his wife and daughter are named like the characters of Spawn! Interesting!🤔
Rob Liefeld just talked about Todd's non-existent trading card line on his podcast. "Why would you wanna sit in the UPPER DECK, when you could sit in the FRONT ROOOWWWW!!!!!"
Wow, i’ve been reading Spawn Origins vol 1 and 2 and i had no idea Wanda and Cyan were from Todd’s real life
How is Spawn in the background? I know Todd has been working on Spawn prior Image Comics but I didn't know he even showcased him way before that.
This isn't a "Marvel" show. This a show hosted by Stan Lee that pretty much exclusively interviewed Image guys. Todd had already started Image by then. If you watch the other episodes with Rob and Todd they make little jokes about it.
yooo lmao why does it sound like they are taking shots at each other
frank Fontaino stan hates artist, hince he calls them cartoonist lol
Dennis TheGreat Corpas ,And this is coming from a guy ,who screwed over Kirby and Ditko.
frank Fontaino. That's the reason Todd left Marvel and deceived the other guy's to leave with him. HE WANTED TO RUN MARVEL COMICS. Couldn't get his way then quit.
Speek No Evil ... lol. He just wanted creative control which Marvel wasn’t giving them after they made Marvel millions
They are taking shots just like good friends do to each other.
So did todd create spawn whilst working for marvel? If so how comes spawn wasnt a marvel character ?
I guess I needed a wife and kid to motivate me and push myself harder in submitting artwork.
Did I saw this woman somewhere, like in Spidey's stuff in early 90s?
You should draw from both life AND comic books. Just observe what reality holds, and then you juxtapose the two. If you draw from life, eventually you can exaggerate and make anything pop or look cool, not just what you see in comics.
AHHHH a monster..
Todd McFarlane owned a comic book store? What was it called and where was it?
The Spider's Web in New York. He used to sell his original art through there for a few hundred $$.
That's an interesting approach lol.
"Andrew Dice McFarlane"
God damn what a great guy.
Oro puro, tnks
Must be 90 to 92 somewhere in there before he left to make image. Man lol Van Isle is beauty and he is from Calgaru
Todd McFarlane doesn't give 2 shits about what Stan Lee says.
Addi S. Koon lol
Very close friends with him so yes he did.
What?
Addi S. Koon Todd Mcfarlane is a huge fan of him and a friend, of course he cares what he says, he’s just comfortable enough to have a casual conversation with him.
Is that an spawn drawing?? Todd wss already with hus masterplan going on
3:49 on getting cocky!
you're a fucking saint for uploading this. Right the fuck on man.
When and where did this air
Stan and Todd both great but one humble and once ignorant but both became prof Stan lee will last longer in history but Todd will be richer when his alive with less heros
he named his daughter and wife after Spawn?!
The other way around, dude.
@@mancinmelkor lolol
How do you name your wife
🏅
was this before or after marvel picked him up?
Jean Pierre Peña this was Way before 9/11
After marvel picked him up. Im not sure if it is before or after image though
todd:gotta get cocky
This McFarlane guy is too unconventional to achieve long lasting success. I bet by 1995 nobody will remember him.
Vade Retro hahahaha
Yes😂
Didn’t he just quit Marvel before this interview?
Hold the baby properly!!
You didn't read comics until you were 17? Yeah, I didn't start reading superhero stuff until after I turned 15.
All 6 dislikes are from dc members
sorry but that ringing noise is really annoying and hard to focus on the video!
can someone clue me in on why people think stan lee was a dick?
Who tf holds a baby like that?
I hate to say it but Stan is a noob compared to Todd don't kill me.
2 months to learn how to draw the body lol, sounds impossible.
It makes sense he focused on one body part per week if you spend hours and hours a day on one body part you can learn it well enough to draw it good. Take a couple months and presto. Then the rest of your life is improving

Plot-twist: She cheated on Todd with Jim Lee. 👀
Nah don’t mind me. Just jokes lol.
Spoiler alert! Todd does not actually draw anything. He does quick doodles and I've seen restroom graffiti look better. He has inked panel page done prior but doesn't show live talent.
True or false in the video he actually gives solid advise on dynamic and keeping things interesting. Idk why your so quick to bash him
