Sleep Training: How to stop nursing baby to sleep
Getting your baby to sleep through the night requires that your baby or toddler learn to fall asleep on their own. Weaning off nursing to sleep teaches your baby to fall asleep independently. The reason why this is so important is it enables your baby to sleep long stretches and eventually sleep through the night.
In this video I walk you through each step of stopping nursing to sleep and getting baby to go down drowsy but awake. Most moms are convinced their baby can't learn another way of falling asleep, but I promise you, they ALL can!
I talk about the Shush/Pat method in this video, but you can use any method like Ferber sleep training, the Chair Method, Sleep Lady Shuffle, Pick Up Put Down and no cry sleep training.

The first thing I would recommend is that you change around the order of your Peaceful Nightly Ritual, or your bedtime routine. Because if we feed or if we nurse our babies too close to bedtime, often what we find is that your baby is going to associate feeding with falling asleep. Your baby is going to need feeding to fall back asleep.
Ideally, you have more than 10 minutes between your baby feeding and falling asleep. In our Peaceful Nightly Ritual, we put books in the middle. You go through all of the bedtime routine. You have a bath, then you give your baby a little massage. You put on pyjamas and a sleepsack. Next, we feed with the lights on. And then, we read baby a book. Then baby goes into his bed. The white noise is playing, the lights go off. So you’re really separating feeding and falling asleep, which is different than nursing your baby to drowsy and then immediately putting him in the crib.
What you want to always keep in mind is, every night I want to remove myself more and more from helping baby fall asleep. So if you’re currently doing Shush Pat for 10 minutes while he falls asleep, then tonight, try to shorten it to 7 minutes. Then sit in your chair. You can sing, or you can shush while you’re sitting in your chair, but it’s less hands on. On Night 2, try to do it for 4-5 minutes of the Shush Pat, and then sit in your chair and do more verbal reassurance, and your physical presence is reassuring him. Once he’s got used to having no more Shush Pat and you’re only sitting in the chair as he falls asleep, then every night or two, work on just moving your chair a little farther from his bed.
What’s most important, no matter what method you choose, is that you take note of how much hands-on assistance you’re doing tonight to help your little one fall asleep, and you do less tomorrow, and less the next night. And you physically move yourself more and more toward the door.
We want your baby ending up falling asleep completely on his own and without you in the room, so that he’s 100% able to fall asleep independently. This will help him resettle during the night. Once your baby can do this, you’re going to see the sleep stretches automatically double or even triple.
It can be really hard to keep track of it when we’re tired, busy moms! So tonight and each following night, write down on a little Post-it note how long you were in the room helping him. Always make sure you’re moving towards helping him less and less. Take your phone in there if you need to, so you can watch the clock, because it can be hard to keep track of time when you’re in the baby’s bedroom.
If he wakes in the middle of the night and you think he’s genuinely hungry, that’s okay. Go ahead and feed him if he’s hungry. But make sure that he stays awake during his feed. And even if he falls asleep during his feed, then you want to sit him up, you want to burp him - do whatever you can to wake him up a little bit, to get him going back into his crib as awake as possible.
There are many ways to teach babies to fall asleep on their own, and to sleep through the night. In my program, 21 Days to Peace and Quiet, I have several step-by-step video guides for you to follow. I walk you through how to pick the right method for your baby.

Hey! I have a 4 month baby. He typically sleeps through the night with 1 feeding sometimes 2. During the day he is a cat napper. His naps never last longer then 30 minutes. Which I have been ok with. I feel like we have a good thing going. But recently my son has been resisting eating. So I have been nursing him to sleep and he has now developed a nurse to sleep habit. I’m so nervous about this. Also, I’ve been hearing so much about a 4 month sleep regression and not being able to self settle being a problem. I’m just wondering if there is something I could be doing to get ahead of it and to break the habit of feed to sleep. I would love some advice!! Thank you in advance

      Hello, Mira!
I get it, it's easy to fall into nursing to sleep. It's totally fine & we can help you!
So I know your baby is only 4 months old, but I would recommend you join our program (which usually starts at 5 months old).
See, the first few lessons of our step-by-step program are okay to do with babies of any age! Even through sleep regressions & while nursing to sleep.
Then, when your baby is 5 months old, we can help you choose a gentle & unique method which will work well with your baby's personality, and start getting them to sleep independently. Make sure to choose the support option so we can help you every single step of the way.
That way, you'll be all set from the get go and ensure great sleep for YEARS. And you get to prevent sleep regressions and dependent sleep associations like nursing to sleep, just like you're describing!

The best way to replace night feedings is to teach your little one to self-settle.
Our program offers 4 step-by-step sleep training methods. You choose the one that feels best for your LO. We have super gentle & gradual all the way to quick & efficient.
Each step of the way you get advice based on your baby’s developmental stage, energy levels, and temperament.

Hi Kayla! How old is your little one? Depending on their age, it's completely normal for them to fall asleep while nursing. Once they get older, you can work on having him fall asleep without nursing. Our Naps program addresses this issue and can be used for babies 6 months and up. Will this work on an 10.5 month old? She only wants to be held for naps and we cosleep. I have a crib next to the bed and a crib in her room but she refuses to sleep away from me. Wants to be rocked to sleep, sleep nurses at night, ect. This is my second kid and my first was like this too. I have to be doing something wrong. Having my kids back to back, I haven't really slept in like 3.5 years peacefully. And honestly I'm just tired and desperate, but I can't do cry it out method. Your reply would be so appreciated.

Hi! I have a 4.5 month old baby. We just started sleep training last weekend
I’ve heard different information regarding to sleep train at night first and then focus on naps, but other people say: you should be training for naps and bed time at the same time... which one do you recommend?
Also, we are doing the pick up, put down method since I can’t tolerate hearing him crying hysterically, BUT I do understand that I need to let him cry for a bit, or even grunting for a bit so that he can learn to soothe himself, but how long should I wait? What is your recommendation?

    • @Babysleepmadesimple
      @Babysleepmadesimple  4 роки тому +1

      Hi mama!
We usually recommend sleep training around 5-6 months old, because there are major developmental leaps that happen before that age that could disrupt the process. So if you can, I'd recommend hanging tight for a little while longer before you start sleep training.
However there are still tips and routines that you can implement right now. Wait no more! Here is a link to our FREE EXHAUSTED MOM's SURVIVAL KIT and a general sleep guide for your little one's age. It will help you understand your LO's current developmental stage and the affect on sleep and what you can expect from your LO right now.
      www.babysleepmadesimple.com/exhausted-moms-survival-kit
      www.babysleepmadesimple.com/4-month-old-not-sleeping
Our take is that we always fix night time sleep first before we tackle naps. We advocate for gentle sleep training methods. With 3 of the 4 methods in our program, you stay with your baby as you teach them to sleep better. You don't have to leave the room if you don't want to. And you can choose a slower, more gradual method to reduce your baby's resistance, fussing and crying. We can't promise "no tears" but you can work to minimize baby's resistance.
We also accommodate for your baby's temperament too. Each lesson has tips on tweaking the steps to suit your baby's energy levels, sensitivity and adaptability.
I'm confident we can get you and your baby sleeping great.
Happy to answer any other questions you have about the program. Here are all the details:

Hi! Congrats on your baby. Remember your baby is so young it's completely normal that he wants to sleep on you. The first three months of a baby's life are called the "fourth trimester" because it's the transitional period between the safe environment of the womb and this world. So it is completely normal at this point for sleep to be inconsistent and a little bit all over the place.

Hi! I am so glad to hear that your LO is sleeping so well at night. This is wonderful. Nap training is notorious for taking a little longer than nights because there is naturally less drive to sleep during the day. However, your LO can definitely learn how to fall asleep independently during the daytime too, just like at night!
I would recommend our naps course. We will walk you through the nap training process step by step, which includes eliminating feeding to sleep and contact napping!

At night time I nurse her she will fall asleep I normally burp her and then hold her upright to reduce reflux. Then when I put her down to crib she's already asleep. Is this wrong? Hi! Thank you for your super insightful and helpful videos :)
My recently turned 5 month old baby is EBF and has been sleeping in her own room/crib since about 3 months (previously we co-slept). She naps pretty adequately throughout the day and is quite active during her awake times. She also, for most part sleeps through the night and occasionally (quite rarely though) wakes up in the middle of the night to feed.
My situation is, I’d like to wean off nursing her to fall asleep so that she can really learn how to soothe herself back asleep and to start her bedtime routine earlier. Currently we give her a bath at ~8:30 and then I nurse her from 8:45/9-10. 10 is when she’s fast asleep and I put her down in her crib and she sleeps in till about 6:30-7am.
I know it’s really not a terrible situation to be in, but I’d really like to get my evenings back if possible.
TL;DR : 5 month old baby EBF. I’d really like to: 1) wean off baby nursing to fall asleep and 2) be able to start her bedtime earlier (which I know is just an adjustment on our part to get back to getting used to having to feed her 1-2 night since we’re putting her down earlier).
Would really appreciate your advice :)

However, if you want some support doing this, our program tells you how to do both at the same time in a gentle way that suits your child's personality:

how do i get my baby to stop co sleeping? he is almost 6 months old, ebf, and needs to be nursing to go to sleep. no matter how many times i try to put him in his crib (right next to my bed) he screams and screams until i pick him up. in the night he will wake up and need me to nurse him to fall back asleep. i know i need to break the sleep associations but how do i do it without him screaming for hours? it seems like he will never ever be able to sleep without me right there and nursing him :(

      Hey Emma,
Here is our video on transitioning from co-sleeping to the crib: ua-cam.com/video/EkRl4eDpcQQ/v-deo.html
Our program can also help get your little one sleeping independently.
Our program has 4 step-by-step methods that walk you through teaching your baby how to settle to sleep on their own, which will show them how to resettle during night wakings too. It also covers reducing and fully weaning off night feeds. With 3 of our sleep training methods you stay with your baby as you teach them to sleep better. You don't have to leave the room if you don't want to. And you can choose a slower, more gradual method to reduce your baby's resistance, fussing, and crying. We can't promise "no tears" but you can work to minimize baby's resistance. We also accommodate for your baby's temperament too. Each lesson has tips on tweaking the steps to suit your baby's energy levels, sensitivity, and adaptability. We are confident we can get you and your baby sleeping great. Hi! Thank you for your message! The habit to use breastfeeding as a sleep aid is often connected on how you fall asleep otherwise. What do you do in the evenings? If you nurse in the evening as well, then our suggestion is to teach her how to fall asleep on her own, this will lead to her STTN and thus improving sleep all around. Our program, 21 Days to Peace & Quiet offers 4 different step-by-step methods for you to choose from (from super gentle & gradual to quick & efficient.) Each step of the way you get advice based on your baby’s developmental stage, energy levels, and temperament.
The program costs $197 now, but you should know that in just a few weeks' time Jilly's updated program will be out and it will have a $97 DIY option.
Jilly is currently on maternity leave. As of October 1st she will be answering questions in our private Facebook group 2 times per week. (In the DIY option you do it all yourself. There's no messaging option or Facebook group. BUT you get all the same information and resources and can definitely get your baby sleeping great.)
In general, when you are 100% consistent in following the steps of the program, your baby will be sleeping great at night within 1-3 weeks. It depends on the method you choose as well as your baby's adaptability. But we cover all of this in the program!
You enroll on this page: www.babysleepmadesimple.com/21-days-to-peace-quiet-program
I hope this isn't too confusing. Happy to answer any questions you have about the program.

Hello new subbie! I know I am a bit late but I just stumbled on your video at the right time! Valueable info but I do have a question!! My toddler just turned 19 months and still breastfeeds (I know some ppl think that's too long & he breastfeeds less during the day as he has gotten older so its easier for me when its nap time) but at night he still wants to co-sleep and breastfeed. He used to stay asleep while co sleeping throughout the night but now (maybe in the last few months) he wakes up if I am a not there and I breastfeed him back to sleep. Is it too late for me? lol he cries FOREVER when I attempt to put him in his crib to fall asleep or if I put him after he is already sleeping in my bed--more screaming and it breaks my heart. Pls advise if you can! thank you so much In advance

For days she's not having it at all, wipe her down with some gentle wet wipes but also make this fun - sing a song and be playful.

Hi! My baby is going to turn 9 months and she is used to me picking up at night from her crib to co-sleep while falling asleep with a bottle. I dont know how I will make her fall asleep on her own in her crib! :-( but Im on the waiting list for your program. Im doing the night routine but she refuses to eat before story time. Keep doing it?

    • @Babysleepmadesimple
      @Babysleepmadesimple  4 роки тому

Hi Karen! You can feed her with the lights on before placing her in the crib until the program starts again. Just make sure that she doesn't use you to fall asleep, so keep her awake and unlatch when she starts closing her eyes. Then when the program starts, you can fully start sleep training.
      As to co-sleeping:
When making big changes to your LO’s sleep routine, We prefer taking time to spread out the steps. Moving gradually leads to less resistance and tears from your baby.
👉 So this is an example of how you can gently and gradually transition out of co-sleeping:
① Move a few feet away from baby in your bed. Spend 1-2 nights sleeping with some distance between the two of you. This gets your baby used to NOT sleeping right next to your body. An easy way to do this is to scoot away after baby has fallen asleep.
⓶ Put baby’s crib (or a Pack n Play) next to your bed and have your LO sleep there. (You’ll probably have to place him in there already asleep.) After each night waking, once he’s fallen asleep, gently transfer him to the crib. If he can spend any amount of time sleeping in the crib the first few nights, that’s a win!
③ Move baby’s crib to his bedroom once he’s spending the majority of the night sleeping there. Most babies and parents sleep better in their own rooms, because they don’t wake each other up. Use a video monitor so you can check on your LO.
④ Begin sleep training (if needed.) Your baby is now sleeping in his crib, in his own bedroom! The way to get him easily settling himself to sleep and sleeping all night is by beginning sleep training.
Also try the tips in this guide:

Hi Rachel, you can breastfeed on demand but try to keep your baby awake while feeding. Once baby's feeding pattern slows and her eyes start to close, gently remove her from the breast and burp her. Then place her down to fall asleep. It's ok if she's drowsy going into the bed. She's still young. Many babies younger than 5 months need to be helped to a drowsy state. Here's my guide on helping your 2 month old sleep more independently.

I am Feeding my baby to sleep for bed time and for naps. She is 11 months old and She still cosleeps, Because the minute I put her in the crib, She cries and keeps waking up. I started following your bed time routine, but we do books then Feeding and Sleeping. I would Like to change it Like you suggested - to put the books time after the feed. However, it is hard for me to feed in sitting position, we usually lay down in my bed and that’s how she ends up sleeping too. The problem is she would nurse few minutes then stops, gets distracted and then continues to eat. This goes on for one hour and then she falls asleep. If I take her to her crib awake, she keeps crying and I take her out thinking she did not eat enough.
What do you suggest? Should I not feed her in my bed or should she only have limited time to eat?
This is very exhausting during nap times, because it takes 1 hour to put her to sleep and then she would sleep only 30 min.

    • @Babysleepmadesimple
      @Babysleepmadesimple  5 років тому

It sounds like the 4 month sleep regression (it can come a little late for some babies.) This regression is caused by a BIG development in your baby's brain which changes his sleep patterns. Often, babies become a bit harder to settle or wake more often. It's normal for things to suddenly change like this (although super frustrating!)
The best thing you can do is (re)start a consistent and healthy sleep foundation for your baby. What's great about your baby going through this development is that he now has the ability to learn to settle himself to sleep and sleep long stretches. We just have to show him how.
I'd start with making sure my bedtime routine and bedtime are helping my baby relax and fall asleep (rather than preventing it.) I go over this in my free Exhausted Mom's Survival Kit. I walk you through exactly what to do at bedtime to set your baby up to settle easier and sleep better.

Hi! Aww poor thing! that sounds exhausting and heartbreaking! It does sound like you and your LO could benefit from breaking that sleep association. If your LO learns how to fall asleep independently, he will STTN. I'm 100% confident that at this age it can be done! I will link the age appropriate guide for you with plenty of sleep tips for 8 month olds, as well as a link to our program, 21 Days to Peace & Quiet. Jilly has helped hundreds of exhausted parents all around the world get their babies sleeping well, so they can get their energy back and start feeling like themselves again. So they can enjoy all the little things with their families. We'd love to help you, too!

@@doniadonia3115 The program costs $197 now, but you should know that in just a few weeks' time Jilly's updated program will be out and it will have a $97 DIY option.
I hope this isn't too confusing. Happy to answer any questions you have about the program.

As soon as my baby is in the crib. She screams had and for a long time. I pay her bum and shush her and she screams louder. After that she starts to gag and freak out. Once it’s 2am and I’ve had my limit I take her out and just nurse her to sleep to get a couple hour sleep myself.

My baby can only fall asleep in stroller outside, but can only KEEP sleeping nursing. So it doesn't have to do with "association" because no matter how he falls asleep he will eventually, in his sleep, search for the breast to keep sleeping. So he wakes me up 8-15 times per night. If he wakes up completely we need to start over and go out in the stroller no matter weather, just so that he can fall asleep in the stroller and 15-40 minutes later wake up searching for the breast and then I move him to my bed... He is 8 months, its not a phase he has always done that, he is also a high need baby. So I don't understand what to do anymore 😔

Very helpful however it's the only way I can manage. All three of my babies have been a pain at sleeping. All ended up breastfeeding to sleep. Whenever I move they scream and hunt for boob. Does it not matter so much at nap time throughout the day? I have two other kids aged 7&4 downstairs whilst trying to get my 6m old to sleep so it's added pressure. Il lay in my bed with him feeding him approx half hr then he wil fall asleep then I sneak away and he realises and screams... So I go back and have to offer boob again. Then it repeats....

      Hello,
Thank you so much for reaching out to us and congratulations on your newest addition! The first few weeks can be so challenging and exhausting with sleep all over the place. It does get better; I promise!
Babies aren’t developmentally ready to learn how to fall asleep independently until they turn 5 months old. However, there are plenty of tips and tricks that can be implemented during the newborn stage to help improve sleep! I would highly recommend reading about these strategies in our newborn guide attached below. www.babysleepmadesimple.com/newborn-sleep-schedule
It can also be really helpful to chat with a sleep consultant! I offer 45-minute consultations on Zoom. My call includes a personalized sleep plan for your little one and a follow-up email to answer any future questions. You can sign up using the link below!

This is based on the assumption that I have a “routine”. I’m pretty sure I’ve never done the same thing twice in my entire life.
How do you start establishing a routine without setting yourself up for failure?

Hi, my loved ones have ADHD so I understand and can relate. Although it may feel difficult, I've found that routines are especially beneficial for ADHD.
I don't like 'crash course sleep training', instead what works best is starting first to set a foundation for healthy sleep and building on that. That's how I structure my sleep programs. Baby steps.
Let me know how old your LO (or LOs) are and I'll send over more specific details.

He just cry’s as soon as I read him a book. He either wants to be feed or asleep on me.
The real question is how do you get the baby to go from feed to other quite activity without crying before bed. And god if I put him in his bed awake hates it.
