When straining liquids out of a can, I actually never thought to make a hole on the other side too. But seeing it done, it immediately makes sense. It allows for air to enter through the back hole, pushing the liquid out through the front hole. What a household genius.
You could not open it fully by leaving a small connection on the lid, strain liquid with the lid on, using a fork or flat tool of choice to lift the lid.
Although those were definitely good tips they’re not necessary. The first thing he shows you is the lid falling into the sauce. That only happens if you cut all the way around the lid. Instead of you leave a little bit uncut you can gently pry it open and use the remaining uncut part like a door hinge. Sorry if grammar is bad.
Man ive been loving your videos, and this one I've known, but if you do it the "normal way" and slow down right before the cut you started, the lid will flip open on a hinge and never fall in.
Yeah and there's a reason why my family do it the 1st way. So basically here in Philippines the Garbage people use their hands to separate the garbage and a long time ago probably 2017 or 2016 not sure, there's a Facebook post showing a Garbage man hands bleeding and it's because of the trash, so that's why we do it that way and also we do it so we can't get cut 😃
And this video showing how the 1st method is kinda bothering me cause why did he open it all the way?? 🤨 It's just a sauce he should've open it just half so that the top can't get dip into the sauce
The second way with the opener on its side creates a very sharp edge along the whole top of the can. This is not ideal, especially if you have children that help take the trash out. I use the first method, leaving just a sliver of the lid attached and flip it up like a lid. Then either break the lid off and put it into the can or push the lid down inside while it is still attached. The best way is an electronic can opener that leaves no sharp edges.
Most people dont realize that it was designed to be used in this orientation. Even the spinning of the blades is significantly easier in this orientation.
I swear Forrest Auto Reviews is your brother 😂, both your videos are so charismatic, upbeat, intelligent, and amazing, you both put off the same vibes! Aloha 🤙🏽
I tried this with multiple different brands of can openers. There ones that are designed to cut horizontally and ones that aren’t. The ones that can cut horizontally can also cut vertically. Just not the other way around.
this "hack" has broken 3 of my can openers, i wouldn't recommend doing it that way unless you know for sure that your tool is meant to be used like that. The angle that the blade is set at has to be perfect or else it could break the can opener.
Always wash the lid before opening. Does the side way open all lids? Even the small tomato paste cans? Doing the regular way the lid won't fall in if you stop before the lid falls off and leave it attached
Meanwhile, I've always been taught and raised to just cut it the first way (from the top), but to not cut the whole lid, rather leave about 1/3 an inch uncut so the lid always stays attached to the can. Doing it this way always served me 2 purposes. 1, it serves somewhat as a cover before I place it back in the fridge if I have any leftover for the next day, and 2, I don't have an unprotected razor sharp edged lid to discard. When the can is emptied, I just fold the lid into the can and then discard the can with the lid folded inside, with no risk of the lid cutting through the trash bag/cutting anyone's fingers.
I found out that thats the “true way to do it” but it either ends up spilling over the side because of heavily packed cans, or the wrapping around the sides that gets torn, ends up into the soup can’s contents
Been there, done that, the can opener broke. It's not made for the sides unless it's specifically designed for the thicker metal. There is a can opener made for that.
Be careful though because this will leave the top of the can rather sharp. Slashed the hell out of my thumb once at work because I didn't think about it
If your can opener has those kind of cutting wheels, yes, but that's not the only kind of manual can opener out there. The Butterfly type requires that you puncture the top of the can.
lol, what you're using is the modern can opener which is made to specifically open cans on the side of the rim. we have an old can opener that can't open cans on the side, only on top.
The problem with this technique is that now your can is sharp as a knife, while the lid is dull. With the traditional holding method, the lid has a sharp edge, but the can is dull, and save to handle.
Having stepped on a can as a child with a sharp edge like that, and cutting about 1/4 the way through the arch of my foot, I"m not sure I could let myself open cans that way.
There is actually a type of can opener that simply just unfolds the metal lid instead of cutting it, it makes way less mess, helps prevent cuts and is apparently far easier. It also means you dont have to clean it as often
I’ve been cutting it the first way for years… Never seen anyone cut it the 2nd way. I’ve always left a little attached so the lid doesn’t fall in. Just for kicks (an infinitesimally small kick), I’m trying the 2nd way tomorrow with my mother’s 50 year old can opener.
This may seam like a quirky different way to open a can but there is a reason people with common sense don’t do it. because it makes the rim of the can and the lid portion a sharp sharp aluminum edge.
The only issue I’ve ever found with this is that the edge left is pretty sharp and a bit easier to cut yourself on. As long as you’re being careful though that shouldn’t be too much of an issue.
A lot of people are saying the “2nd way is the right way” because of a viral video a few years back. And while yes. The person who actually discovered that method should have taken credit for it. The “2nd way is a much better way but the “Traditional way” is the way it wants intended. Simply looking at a 1927 (and 1931 and many other) Patent for the “Modern” Can opener (not the original can opener which was a completely different system) you can see it was intended to be used the “traditional way. Me personally I like the “2nd way” better but for everyone saying “the second way is the right way and has always been” you’re wrong and just quoting a Viral Video from years ago…
I've always opened the can the 1st way for my mom. Then one day I literally forgot which way to open the can and by accident opened it up the 2nd way, realizing that's the actual way to open the can.
Personally I think this way is a little dangerous. I cut upright and leave the lid slightly attached to the can. It doesn't fall in, you can use it to strain the liquid then lever it up to empty the can. Press it down inside the can when the can is empty and rinsed, and then there are no sharp edges exposed when it goes into the recycling.
Don't do this!!! there's a reason the 1st one is common, depending on the can and durability of your can opener, your can opener would probably break due to the thickness of the walls of the can. Here's an alternative: Before opening the lid all the way use the flat part of the can opener to slightly push the lid above and open it all the way.
