That's right ppl we all just watch a 17 minute video of James opening cans lol but he is so good its worth it lol great vid man
He knows the Day of Reckoning is coming. Did you ever watch the film "The Day The Earth Stood Still" ? and thought, this will never happen? :)
I’m actually in the market for a new one! Lol I actually HAVE a life couple minutes for him...yeah!
I like how you’re on a first name basis with the man
I was just thinking the same thing!
I'm stoned, what's your excuse?
Having lost the use of my left hand after a stroke the one handed opener from Amazon was a Godsend! Love it.
Me too.
If you weren't eating canned food you wouldn't have had a stroke
Have you tried automatic can openers? those might be even easier. Also update please did you get the one handed one to try? Just wondering
@@loknloll that's quite rude bro
@@t-revstastetube8900 The automatic was a no-go. It would've been easier with two hands and eventually you were going to run into a "power" problem. The one handed has been great with not one problem. PS. I bought two to have one as a back-up in case anything went wrong.
This is actually an issue for me as a left-handed person with arthritis in my hands. Thanks for the reviews!
I’ve had the same smooth edge can opener in my house for almost 20 years. It’s a traditional style and still works perfectly. I think that’s the best part of them, because they don’t cut they just release the glue on the seal; the parts don’t wear down like the blade can. I can recommend
Ditto. The only complaint was we bought two and one does not work at all after awhile of use, otherwise the one that is working is great.
What's the name of the can opener you use?
The problem is they don't make them like they used to tired of buying crap that doesn't work
An ax is slightly messier, but a lot more fun.
clevelandcbi I hit a can of spray paint and went to the hospital doing that...
LOL.
The "rattle thing" is usually a cheap marble or just a scrap piece of steel. Like Rodney, I had to know. I was 6 at the time though 🙄
Not as messy as a messer. ;)
@@georgespell9606 Ah, I see you too are a lumberjacker, baby. ;)
I can't believe I'm watching a can opener video at 5am.
Sydney, Australia? 🤔
@@jasonhill9853 how did you know? Lol
I see you in the comments section of YT once a year lol
4:51am for me lol.
5:55 am.
I bought a Swing-A-Way for around $7 in the late 90s and it's hands down the best can opener I've ever used. Still going strong.
They used to make some great can openers, As a kid (in the early 2000's) I remember my mom got a swing-a-way(made in usa model) at a thrift store for $1 the thing lasted until recently, when I tried replacing it with a newer version of the same model, it was a bit flimsy, and disintegrated within weeks of use.
@@im_Polyhedrons EZ-DUZ-IT Deluxe Can Openers are the new swing away. They bought the old USA factory equipment and still make them like the old ones here when swing away went to over seas production.
The smooth edge ones are nice for products you won't use all of at once. The lid goes back on and you can put it in the fridge. Also safer for kids and also doesn't cut a trash bag open once you throw it away.
Maybe its just me but I'd pay good money for a good can opener. A can opener that struggles to open cans piss me off so much. It's just so frustrating
James Griffin agreed! I spent about $15 - $20 on the OXO soft grip opener because it’s as smooth as the Kitchenaid one featured here. Some things really are worth the money. Strangely enough, the OXO soft grip salt and pepper grinders are also worth their higher price-nothing like freshly ground pepper or salt, and they operate as smoothly as their other soft grip products
Honestly 15-20 dollars for an electric one is a good investment but anything more is ridiculous
get an electric can opener. it just removes all the problems of crappy manual can openers. of course, if you live in california, you'll want to keep a manual one on hand for when it's windy and the power companies shut you power off
When I first got married we had terrible can opener problems. My wife worked in a kitchen so some of the recipes we made used the giant #10 cans, and they took their toll on even the "nice" can openers from the local target/walmart/etc. I broke down and bought the Fissler featured as #2 here, I made a video the day I got it, and another one last year about the thing, we've been using it going on near 5 years now and it still works as good as the day I got it. I've given them as gifts to any friends just moving out and such, every one has asked where I got them because all their family wants one.
i hate losing mine
For April 1st, you could make a video of you comparing different bald caps
I would watch that!
I've had a smooth edge Rosle can opener for about 20 years now and it works the same as when I bought it. One of the best kitchen item I have.
There is such an eloquence to your videos that's really hard to describe. So in depth but so simple. So laid back but very involved. Such great content man. Always.
I love that he is genuinely interested to see if the products work or not. And takes his reviews seriously yet had a sense of humour. Lots of UA-camrs review products but they are either trying to sell us the product or just providing entertainment and don't follow the instruction properly. So you don't know if the product is actually good or not.
And he seems like such a nice genuine guy
I think a lot of them start out ok, but they dull quickly so I'd be interested to see how long they last rather than how well they open right out of the box.
Same, either the blade dulls, the blade curls in, or (and this only happens rarely) the handle crank becomes unattached to the gear making it impossible to turn the blade.
Exactly. I'd hate to spend $20-35 and then it's crappy in 6 months to a year.
Usually just get some cheapo ones as if they die in 6 months, I'm only out a couple bucks.
My thought exactly. I have had $1 to $10 manual can openers and none of them impressed me long term. All of them went to hell within 3-6 months. Dropping for $20-$35 for a hand cramp sounds insane to me. For that kind of money, it has to electric.
@@advlandvideo Even electric can openers have their drawbacks. It's a bit of a circus trying to open a can larger than the can opener.
Wonder if anyone makes a can opener sharpener? Maybe like a whetstone in the shape of a can lid?
Did you make a big weird tuna cassarole?
A tuna cassarole with a side of refried beans with green chiles
parents bought a swing a way can opener 35 years ago for about a buck and it still works! even with the rust in some of its parts, truly a high quality product that lasts and doesn't even costs that much. tried some new ones over the years but they never were a keeper and some of them broke within a few weeks.
I use a motorized one touch can opener from Black & Decker. It was purchased in 1995 and still works pretty great.
My man straight up bought like 30 cans
And a variety of different styles too. He could have just bought a couple cases of one type, but that wouldn't be up to his rigorous testing standards. ;)
The man is dedicated to making good content for us
He could have flipped the cans over and opened the bottoms too, but that's none of my business
Lol for real
@@danielstewart2784 lol, I didn't even think about that. He could have purchased half the number of cans.
Who the heck would sit around for a can opener video? I WILL when its done by Freakin' Reviews! Great video!
Atomic shrimp viewers
Me ! When I look at reviews right before looking online to buy one, which is exactly why I watched.
I have my smooth edge can opener from the dollar store (it was 2 bucks). I use it for about ten years now and it still works amazing.
It's interesting that there are people out there that dislike smooth edge can openers over the regular ones. Like why would you want a sharp metal edge with cutting hazard and metal splints in your food if you could also decide to have a clean opened can? I don't understand.
I love my starfrit smooth edge can opener! I've had it for years, and it still works great with little effort!
You’re like the guy from the math problems buying weird numbers of can openers and green chilis
James bought 40 cans of food, but he has only 7 can openers. How many can he open in 10 minutes?
James has 40 cans of food and 3 can openers that can open cans at a constant rate of 2 cans per minute and 4 can openers that can open cans at a constant rate of 3 cans per minute. How long does it take James and 6 of his friends to open all 40 cans assuming they all start at the same time? How many cans are they able to open in 5 minutes?
Oh lol!! Have a like!
Predatorhousepet well, you are rated #1 for best comment! A nice little riddle. How many cans can James and his friends open while traveling west at 60 mph on train?
All soft edge opener all the way, for my house. Even put on in the Car bug-out-bag, and Camping gear. I got a battery powered one for the kitchen - Making chili (9 cans) the battery power saves time. DO other prep while the cans are being opened. :D
Great review - I've been through a few different models to find good one. I'm going to check out that $35 job!
Smooth edge can openers are the best.
The lid cut with a smooth edge can opener can be put back on top of the can (for use as a temporary cover), but cans opened with a conventional can opener cannot.
Thanks for adding to our worlds trash for a neddless item
@@shawbros Good point about the smooth edge can openers. BUT, one disadvantage they also have is, because the edge of the lid is on the outside of the can, you can't use the lid to drain liquid from a can. You can do this with a conventional can opener where the edge of the lid is on the inside of the can.
@@robwalton2007
No, you can still drain the majority of the liquid, by holding the can with one hand, and the lid with the other, turn it over at about a 45 degree angle, and just slightly open the lid until the water flows out.
Thank you, James. I've been on a hunt for a decent can opener, and your review was very helpful!
I've been a convert to the soft edge openers: really great for items such as tomato paste where you need a seal and the can will keep in the fridge. My first was an Oxo. Then I was working at another city and maintaining another apartment and kitchen. I then got an opener that's like your most expensive one (though mine was $20). It's my everyday opener now, and like that it always has had a smooth operation.
This video was at the perfect time! I'm looking for a manual can opener and I've been frustrated with the ones I've tried. Thanks for making my choice easier. :-) I love KitchenAid!
Loved it! When my trusty old Can-O-Matic died on me (after about 50 years), I bought a Kitchenaid and I love it! Good to know that I made the right choice. What I would really like is to see you review electric can openers because I went through so many that I just gave up. They quit after 6 months.
The Swing-Away wall mounted can opener is my favorite. Works for YEARS!
First of all, you get can bits with regular can openers. The side opener I have is the Kuhn Rikon side opener. It's great. It also is a pop top opener, soda or water top opener, beer bottle type opener & lid opener. You don't have to expend extra strength just to open anything. I purchased mine from QVC. Best investment ever. Plus my hands don't hurt when using it.
You didn't test the classic swing-a-way can opener. Those things are all metal and never wear out. Your #1 kitchenaid is one drop onto a hard tile floor away from breaking.
I have been using an OXO can opener for 7 or 8 years now, and I love it. I move the handle as I turn the crank and it's nearly effortless to use. I also have a decade's-old Swingline that I used for many years--all metal except the vinyl covers on the handles, but I stopped using it once I got the OXO.
Since I just had to go to UA-cam to figure out out to use the side cut can opener i came across your video and now have a real education in can openers. Who would have thought i would spend my time this way along with 268,000 others!
Great timing,I'm in need of a new can opener. Thanks for the review.🍀
I just watched a 18 minute video about can openers
*I REGRET NOTHING*
Bob this is your life. Watching can opener videos. Enjoy.
You can use those cheap can openers as a smooth edge style too.
I ran across your channel recently and I have enjoyed watching them. I then watched your can opener review. I had an electric can opener for a while that worked great (SOMETIMES) and then sucked a lot of times. I had an old crappy can opener in the kitchen drawer that I have been using since I threw the electric one away. After watching your can opener review I went on Amazon and ordered the Kitchen Aid opener. When it arrived and I used it the first time, I had the same results as you did.; I was impressed. I am very glad that I watched your review and then ordered this product. Thank you for the entertaining reviews and helpful information. I will be looking through your reviews before I order anything in the future, Keep up the great work.
Does it still work to this day as effectively
I'm left handed, I've ploughed through many different openers. They either wouldn't go on the tin or didn't like working anti clockwise. I now own an electric one!
I have been using smooth edge for a long time now. I never have sharp metal from the cans and that is important to me. I find the $10 version at my local grocery store works well and last a long time.
I have one those side/smooth opening ones, from Pampered Chef. I've been using it for at least 10yrs, and I absolutely love it!
Own a Kitchen Aid but really love the smooth-edge can opener from I bought from Target two years ago. Comfortable grips, catches on the first try 95% of the time, and leaves an easy-to-open lid with no burrs. The model of simplicity and efficiency.
What I use and love: Mainstays Safe Cut Black Can Opener $8.97 Wal-Mart
I have a few of those. They work good, and are what I usually use.
Got them at goodwill for around $1 each.
The oxo is what I use and think it is a great opener. I have the other type also but just for opening tuna cans. Another nice thing about the side openers is the top can be pressed back on kinda like a lid for short term storage if you don't use all the contents but shouldn't be used that way for more then a day and in the fridge.
Very intelligently designed and very well orchestrated. Thorough and valuable. Presenter is very personable. Hats off and a hearty thank you!
I'm late to the party but we've been using the OXO one for years, all can openers loosen up over time, that one rocks and is still Rockin...8 years later. Got my money's worth and no need to replace yet! Great review!! Smiles...
The soft edge can opener is great, but I think it takes about 20 cans before you finally get done how to do it smoothly. But once you figure it out, it's super smooth, doesn't have any sharp edges, and most importantly doesn't drop the lid into the food.
Why don't people like smooth edge can openers? Because they need the lids to drain the tuna? I love my OXO smooth edge can opener. You can wash the cans and recycle. But it is so smooth that it is hard sometimes to see that the opening is done -it's just less tension. But they are safe around kids.
The Jolly Green Giant is a Plant Sim!
It always makes me smile when you use other items you've reviewed (like the nanotowel) in previous videos.
I think the squeezing can opener would make my hand painfully crampy.
I've used a Pampered Chef soft edge can opener and had no problems with it. My husband bought a KitchenAid can opener and it is the hardest to use, but it's not the same opener as then one on this video. My hunt continues. Thanks for the video!!!
Good video...helps to see product in action before buying.... I always research on UA-cam on many products. Bought a Purple bed based on James’ review... loving it. Thank you
At least with EZ Squeeze you eventually get Popeye forearms.
Well, there is a cheaper and more pleasurable way to get popeye forearms.
My right arm is also sore when I watch his videos 😂😜
I get it! It's not really the spinach that gave Popeye those forearms, it's opening the spinach cans!
Draining a smooth edge opened can (tuna) is a pain in the ass but opening any other can I'm about that smooth edge life.
I avoid smooth edge for that same drainage reason. Leave a little bit attached to act as a hinge, drain, then twist the lid the rest of the way off.
We have a little tuna can sized strainer gadget we use then. No sharp edges and well drained tuna to boot!
@@BB-gt1eg Sounds like an adorable little kitchen gadget. Where did you pick it up?
@@PongoXBongo I can't remember now where we got it...I see Amazon has a few styles of them if you search for "tuna can strainer" but nothing like the little one we have. It's seen many years of good use and is a great tool to have!
@@BB-gt1eg The one my mom has she got from pampered chef, maybe yours is from there.
Thank you very much for demonstrating the can openers. What I'm really looking for is something that can fit on the keychain. Something that you can put in your pocket that's very small portable and that can open up cans. When you're in an emergency crunch.
Okay so I have the soft edge can opener and this video taught me how to use it. thanks James!
Gotta review the Starfrit top-turn smooth-open. Best can opener by far, smooth action sturdy build. It's so strong it can hold the can while you're turning it and it even grips the the lid when you're done opening. Just pull apart the arms over the garbage can to drop the lid. Only 10 bucks retail.
I’d used for a while the “OXO”/Smooth Edge & Lid-Pliers Can Opener. And, one day it 😣👎🏽 broke in pieces on me when I opened a large food can. So, I went out & purchased a “Cuisinart” Electric can opening. I’ve been satisfied every since.👍🏽😊
I have pampered chef smooth edge can opener.
I definitely think electric openers are a great option. I think of my elderly parent and think that's a great option for her.
I found the same kitchenaid one at Tuesday morning for four dollars. It works amazing, I always hand wash it and dry immediately to avoid rust and it still works great.
Thank you. I need a can opener and I'm tired of buying a new$5 one every year or so. I'm ready to put out for a $20 model, and I'm glad to have you do the review work so I can just buy the one that will work and hopefully last a few years
That one works like a hand exercise work out.
I have the swing away brand a it is real effortless! Love your reviews!
I love my OXO soft edge opener. I use it on everything that doesn't need to be drained (like tuna). For those I also have the KitchenAid because I found it on sale at Kroger. FYI in most cans you can just lift the lid with your fingers instead of using the tool on the OXO unless they used an adhesive on the lid when sealing it
I've always used a regular can opener sideways and it does the smooth edge thing awesomely.
I love the easy squeeze as I only have use of one hand and yes it’s my left hand. Do admit sometimes you have to go round a couple of times
And what about a $0.25 P38 that you could get from any military surplus store?
Can I get an amen from the choir?! Darn things stay sharp forever, and you can carry one in your wallet for unexpected uses!
All good and well Hoss, but you gotta have hand strength! Besides, I d just ask YOU to do it without batting my eyelashes, coz I can tell you were raised right! Umm also, we’re not out in the woods....yet
@@BennyHelms Like when you're out walking and find beans? J/k
Still got mine from Vietnam and still works great.
I keep one on my keychain never know when you need one
Like these videos so much. I've learned a lot from them. Not that I can get some of these products in Australia but I know what specific product parts/traits to look out for when shopping for products of my own I want to buy.
My expensive, ditzy Zyliss just crapped out, and I couldn't figure out where to go from here. Your video was PERFECT, and I'm going for the Kitchen Aid or the Farberware. Many thanks for your exceptionally excellent review.
Oh no I was going to get the Zyliss Lock N Lift one. I guess I’ll get the EZ-DUZ-IT that Cooks Country recommends. My Cuisinart one stopped working.
I have a pampered chef smooth edge can opener and I'll never use another can opener again. It's so smooth and doesn't need a lot of effort
Chili's Mom That's what I have, too. It's going on 20 years of abuse with a family of 5, so I'm going to call it good. And I can use it left handed.
I still use my swing-away I purchased in 1974!
daaa best lol i can't say that i have had one that long 15 years here on one love the swing-a-way got turned on to the brand via my friend got one from his grandmothers house when it was being sold it was a wall mount she used for decades probably just as old as yours
I've had mine for 25 years. Still works like a charm. Bought one for a friend 6 years ago. He loves it.
installed in 1957, used daily. Average 3 cans a day (dog food). RIP 2018.
Got an old one of those as well 😯
I dont have the wall mounted swing away but i have 2 old hand held swing away can openers i bought for a buck each at yard sales. Best freaking can openers ever. My mom teased me about buying the second one (yup we yard sale together all the time) but after letting her use one she saw why i snatched it up. So i now have one in house and one in travel camper. And have since got another one for $1.25 at goodwill for her.
I never though that a can openers comparison could entertain me... but my fever it's high and i'm thankful to have this video for kill some time x_x greetings from canary islands and i totally go with that last smooth can opener.
Surprised by results, expected one of the smooth-edge openers to take top position. I own a KitchenAid blender and there's no doubt they make the best devices. Thanks for the thorough comparison!
Had a feeling he was going to choose KitchenAid as that's a fantastic brand
@UCYJ5fvU15TdtApDskGW2A-A Why are you even reading the comments before watching the video? 🤔
Great can opener had one once
To open a can leaving a smooth edge I just use the dollar store can opener backwards. Works perfectly.
Good Tip, I'll have to give that a try.
I have used my OXO for 5 years and it works as good now as when it was new. I can’t imagine using anything else.
I have the OXO model and I have NEVER been able to use the lid jaws. I might buy the Kitchen Aid. Good video!
You can get kitchen aid can openers on Amazon for $10.
Swing-A-Way all metal is the only one that lasts.
Agreed! I have had mine for 44 years!
My grandmother had one. No idea how long it had been there, but it worked for at least 40 years....
We used to have one of those. It was old when I first used it.
parents bought a swing a way can opener 35 years ago for about a buck and it still works! even with the rust in some of its parts, truly a high quality product that lasts and doesn't even costs that much. tried some new ones over the years but they never were a keeper and some of them broke within a few weeks.
I agree with you John, the OLD American made Swing A Way can openers were good. Not the new Chinese made ones though! Bought one at Walmart in 2016 for $10.49 plus tax, 3 years in & now it skips a couple spots on the can & you have to go over it again, then use a spoon to lift the lid out & twist it off the can. Even after disassembling it, cleaning & reassembling it, it still acts up. My OLD American made Swing A Way never had those issues AT ALL until it got lost in a move. Avoid the NEW Swing A Way can openers at all costs, the quality is gone now.
The best can opener I ever had was a Tupperware brand can opener. It was 35 dollars too. Opened any can I threw at it until my hubby put it in the dishwasher. Stopped working after that. I may go pick up one of those KitchenAid ones though. Thanks for the great review!
i love this guy. he really dips dig into each categories deep.
UA-cam algorithm: hmm hes been watching alot of music videos maybe i should recommend him some more

Lol me, too except it’s 3am
'You used the can openers wrong!' comments incoming. Brace yourself.
darkholyPL I said the same lol
Yes he did, it was slightly annoying me
It's true tho, it kind of invalidates his efforts to review them.
The first one would have probably worked better if he did it that way
No joke, the only reason I came to the comments was to see how many people thought this...
As a nurse, I LOVE the one handed one! Many folks have only one functioning hand (even if for a short period of time)
I like the smooth side openers. I bought a Pampered Chef smooth side opener 27 years ago, and still use it!
My favourite can opener?
Swiss Army knife.
I think for 35 bucks you could get an electrical can opener.
That would be logical...
But not environmentally friendly
@@tamigreene8305 How do you think these hand can openers are made? By hand???? srs?
mercsan117 Yes, but an electrical can opener requires energy during BOTH production and usage while the hand-crank ones do not.
@@matchingchong We already are using the electricity, so a mere 20 watts for 10 seconds isn't that bad...
This is a very helpful video, I've found it hard to find a decent non-electric can opener recently.
As a kid (in the early 2000's) I remember my mom got a swing-a-way(made in usa model) at a thrift store for $1 the thing lasted until recently, when I tried replacing it with a newer version of the same model, it was flimsy, and disintegrated within weeks of use.
2000s* Apostrophes aren't used to make plurals.
Thanks for make this video, it was amazing , I use to be crazy with those stuff. Finally you help me to find the right.
"Smells like chillis in here now." If I had a nickel for every time I heard that...
Smooth edge openers aren't good for tuna because you can't use the lid to drain it
Wrong.
Draining a smooth edge opened can is really easy. Just leave the lid on, hold the can with one hand, and the lid with the other hand, tilt the can downwards at about a 45 degree angle, and slightly open the lid until the liquid flows out at the speed you want. When the liquid stops flowing, hold the can upright and take the lid off.
@@shawbros nope y'all wrong here-you can't squeeze that last bit of oil/water with smooth lids like you can with the older types. I shudder to think how *wet* your tuna salad is.
We've got a Pampered Chef smooth edge style opener that I love, except they added a bottle opener "tooth" that is in the perfect location to go through the tip of your thumb if/when you slip off the crank.
Born in the mid-50's I still recall the hard straight thin metal can openers we had. But, I think back then we did not open as many cans as we do now. thankful for the pop tops.
@@bostonrailfan2427 Exactly.
Give me the old fashioned all metal can opener everytime, mine has lasted for over 10 years
Hunnie, Max and their Human Too meh....you’re right but it HURTS MY HAND BOO
My Oxo smooth edged one shown here has worked for over 10 years - so what.
@@rodmunch69 lol
Should have had all these vs a P38.... which is also like $0.45
P38 best of all.
Spend a couple of cents more for the P51. Much less finger fatigue.
My girlfriend and i are moving in together in March and we're starting to get utensils and we are watching your videos for recommendations 😂 have a happy 2022!
Definitely agree about the Dollar tree opener, I just got the Kitchen aid, turquoise, at Walmart $14.98.
Only opened one can so far, noticed a big difference. We shall see how long this one lasts and how long it takes for this one to rust.
Good thing you didn't get automatic can openers, because they have a nasty habit of leaving a razer sharp edge on the top.
I like the side cut can opener
I always just used one of those old claw can openers. You can get really really fast with those once you use them enough.
I love that you are not biased so many UA-camrs who compare things almost always choose the super expensive one just because its the expensive one its annoying AF
A true test would be opening a big can of hominy(pozole) 😂
I like the OXO 1049953 smooth edge opener, it has two handles you push together like a standard can opener, the turn knob is on the side like a normal can opener, but it cuts from the side. The 'lid pliers' are also operated by the handles too.
I had a KitchenAid opener and when it fell apart after about 5 years I went through a few of the cheapie ones and I hated them, they hurt to use. I found one of the $35 soft openers for a whopping $3.50 at my local hardware store and I love it. I have limited use of my hands and I have no problem with this opener and it's great if you don't use everything in the can, you can put the top back on and it closes well. The only thing I have to go back to the old opener for is tuna since you can't squeeze out the juice with the larger rim lid.
Almost 5k views in a half hour since upload (according to UA-cam) we must all be having slow sundays.
