I believe this type of dance is called Cutting Shapes. I called people out on it before but I just get steam rolled by negativity.
You taught me from the start and keeping it real. Melb Shuffle is love MELB shuffle is life.

I never had any dance experience until I started learning how to "tiptoe" (cutting shapes) a few months ago, haha. But I followed some actual Melbourne shufflers on Instagram and noticed how different their dancing was from what I was learning. I just found your channel in an effort to learn more about Melbourne shuffling.
In regards to "what happened", I remember watching an tutorial (from 3 years ago) from a popular shuffler/shaper-- Elena Cruz, who stated that in one of her tutorials, she finds that combining moves from the Melbourne shuffle with cutting shapes works really well so I suppose that dancing that way became more and more popularized, "cutting shapes" became interchangeable with "shuffling"...
Anyway. Gonna watch some of your tutorials so that I can pick up some new moves and appreciate Melbourne shuffling :-D

Agree that's what happened. Cutting shapes became popular, shared enough moves with shuffling that people started calling it shuffling, and Melbourne shuffling kind of died down. I don't blame them though. your average person has never heard of cutting shapes, while shuffling is infinitely more marketable.

Agree, only started Melbourne shuffle 1 year ago and in my country we are only 1-5 that does it (yes only 1-5 😮) most shufflers i know do Shapes so it can get a bit lonely 😅 but i’d rather be true to the style i love + i don’t mind Shapers calling it shuffle, but i go off, if a Shaper calls cutting shapes Melbourne shuffle

I saw this video pop up to my surprise. About 8 years ago your videos helped me learn to dance. I haven’t shuffled in 6 or so years but those two years were a blast. I haven’t been in the scene for that long but its interesting to see what the dance “evolved” into. The scene has always been weaker in the U.S. but I have always wished it was something I could go do at clubs with other people. Most things make a comeback so we’ll see what happens. Cheers Milan!

It's actually huge in America. There's a shuffling scene in each major city in America. The only thing is shufflers after 2015 mostly all do the rm and very little tstep. And of course, there's also shapers. We definitely still have ppl who do MAS in the west coast and Melbourne all over the us. The unity is a lot better in 2019 than it ever was in the usa.

wassup bro much love from SoCal, USA. I’m one of those over 35 shufflers that learned about shuffling in the underground scene then refined my skills watching you. my fav vid is of you moon shuffling. I’m a self taught dance student and I have to say I appreciate the sentiment you have regarding what’s being called shuffle dancing on youtube but honestly it’s only referencing the shuffle in keywords. they know they’re not melbourne shuffling. i use the term cutting shapes but it more closely resembles the charleston step or the 90s kid n play since theyre not moving side to side. i felt the same way you felt when i kids were supposedly shuffling but were mostly doing the running man in place instead of moving across the floor (literal definition of shuffling 😂)

I.. um I just can't believe that the time, the time... has gone.
I did not ccept and I could not
But.. now I realized Oh God
I have started shuffle in Melbourne style since 2016 I'm just a newcomer. and your tutorial video was really helpful to me.
    I'm still shuffling
Sorry. All that I was meaning to say...
    Cheer up. sir.
It's really sad to see there aren't many videos in OG.

This could be me being a special breed of progressive Cali shuffler...
But to awnser the question in your title is... The “Melbourne shuffle” has evolved into just “shuffle” Like how all dances do
With The gentrification of internet Dancing aside (ie. Fortnite) I genuinely believe there is no “correct” way to dance & people can define what “shuffling” is to how they see fit (Malaysian style, Russian style, Cutting shapes etc.)
However I see your point in spreading awareness to the history & roots behind what shuffling is. I’ve made a hardstyle themed tutorial & referenced your iconic videos in the description, you are without a boubt an OG within the legacy of Melbourne shuffle 👊ur fuckin awesome dude!!!!

I guess i was just the right guy at the right place at the right time :)

In my opinion the millennials (yes, the tip-toe-ers are mainly just millennials) are really impatient and "surface-ish". It's hard to explain, but from my point of view they like to be liked and noticed as the world is incredibly connected, so youngsters want to be noticed, to stand out from the crowd but at the same time they're really impatient and want everything here, now and with minimal effort (this isn't just about dancing but pretty much everything - they want everything and as soon as possible without investing themselves too much). Melbourne shuffle requires months of constant practicing to "re-wire" your body to do the shuffle and running man automatically as a natural movement. And that takes time. So they come up with something simpler, faster to learn that kind of looks similar - still a dance with leg movements mainly. This will soon get outdated as the millennials are very impatient and lacking the will to commit themselves to something long-term. Maybe I'm going offtopic, but just a share from my personal perspective - I'm a mountaineer and that requires constant training, learning and exercising all your life to constantly be in a prepared state in both your body and mind. It requires a long-term committment. I've tried asking younger people to go to the mountains either in their own group or in my party - they're really keen on the idea since it is "awesome" but once I start pushing the actual answer as training needs to commence, they immediately find an incredible amount of excuses there and then. They just want to stand out with only an absolute minimal amount of commitment. This shuffle dance will also fade out of trend really soon, just as everything does with millennials. Keep in mind, that I'm only sharing my personal perspective and I'm generalizing things - obviously there are lots of different people at all times, but current generation seems to generally lack committment - they only want an easy and fast solution. They no longer see the joy in the process - the only desire is the end-goal (in this case getting noticed I guess). Look what happened to MAS (MAlaysian Shuffle) - I guess only the old dogs will remember this trend. Teenagers were absolutely crazy over this branch of dance but that sub-style died as the youngsters got bored of the Melbourne Shuffle.

Music changed and also the old heads at least in America who did MAS slowly just faded out of the scene. They also didn't do a good job on passing the torch and teaching others to learn MAS. Also MAS is hard asf for most ppl to learn. SO Cali is the result. Cali is still around. MAS has a handful of ppl in the us who do it. Melbourne rocking is alive in the US and on the come up. Shapes is dominant worldwide because of its ease to use and easy to learn steps. In the past two years a lot of shapers are slowly learning Melbourne and even Spain is trying to add more melbourne into their style of shapes creating some sort if hybrid of the two.

YES. 29 here, and I feel the same exact way! Keep seeing people mislabel things the shuffle and its absolutely frustrating to see. By masquerading as the shuffle its just burying the history and the dance of the actual melbourne shuffle. Having met other folks that think what they're doing is shuffling turn to me and ask me what the dance I was doing is called is just ??? Like, are you serious? Of course I explain it to them but its just bewildering. I wish folks would stop doin' that

Yea I certainly intend to make more videos! I guess i’m just lucky to live in Melbourne so:
      A) i never see people do this new thing, and
      B) therefore nobody asks me what my dance is called!
      Keep fighting the good fight!

The most popular videos under "shuffle dance" are super corny and barely resemble the roots of the dance.
To find great shufflers you have to delve into what evolved from Melbourne Rocking & Hardstyle shuffling.
Rocking: Kool Crowd, FTS Shufflers, Bass Side Regiment etc
Hardstyle: TorZah's youtube collabs (I don't follow hardstyle much these days)
A few of us in Melbourne had beef with some American shufflers for a while for not respecting the OG's and Melbourne in general as it's "Irrelevant now", but at least there is still a few out there that know about the dance's roots.
