Mauler is right: you stop noticing a good movie with subtitles because you're giving it your whole attention and reading activates your memory and imagination, unlike passively watching.
I have been inspired to try my hand at writing ✍️ a story. I feel like if we all don’t start creating something that we want, then we’ll only have what we are given.
One of my favourite movies to watch in its original language is Das Boot, in German with English subs, for some reason it feels more authentic. I also love the Ghibli movies.
Same with Downfall. Mauler is right, in good foreign films reading the subtitles becomes unnoticeable. I think it's because we are giving the story our entire attention
“This is my brother Darrell and my other brother Darrell” is a reoccurring joke in The Bob Newhart show. The entire line is “Hi my name is Larry. This is my brother Darrell and my other brother Darrell” and it is said EVERY TIME Larry talks to anyone
You can actually hear the Blonde Darryl speak in Bill Murray's "Stripes" He yells "Grenade!" as he runs out of the office of the Captain played by John Larroquette. The captain pulled the pin and panicked so he hands it to his secretary and says "You deal with this ".

I half agree with the criticism of Joss Whedon, but then I think of something like "The Body" and I change my mind. The guy was awesome. (And if you watch the documentaries on some of the dvds of his shows and see which scenes he shot and then left out of the final cut you appreciate his ability to whittle away at what he made until only the very best bits remained - kind of the antithesis of Taika Waititi).
I think Mauler put it perfectly when he said the comment sounded like an argument repeated from somewhere else. Whedon is really easy to criticize if you have only a passing familiarity with his work.
But no mention of the big what if. Firefly. But I am unhappy about how and why he was cancelled. It seems he may have been a high demanding director that was uncompromising about his requirements. In reference to the kamikaze corps, some may have volunteered, but more than a few did not. For those that refused, the military would try to shame them into doing it through peer pressure and the whole, "You're failing to do your duty" shtick. There is a documentary in which a former Japanese Imperial officer recounted his grim job of having to pick individual men who would die on kamikaze missions. Agreed with Mauler, The Nevers was an excellent show that had so much potential. That last episode alone really showed just how far in scope the series was meant to be. Shame it was killed off prematurely.

I always liked the stuff I've seen from Whedon, but one thing the man could never sell me on, was character deaths (with the exception of one). I don't know what it is, but whenever he kills off a character I see not the marionette, I see the hand holding the strings. My only reaction is "ah, guess we didn't have enough drama for a couple episodes". The one that made me roll my eyes the most was the "your shirt" death. It was the only reaction it got out of me, even though I liked the character and the other one that was affected the most by it.

It's not easy to make a compelling show with characters that are all on purpose extremally unlikeable. Don't get me wrong. I like them as characters. But other than 2 exceptions, the rest are very very VERY bad people. Including the Heroine.
Is anyone as excited about Masters of The Air as I am? BoB of the sky! Plus I am a complete warbird nerd so I am SO pumped for this!
Apple TV are doing some great stuff. I’ve had a cull of my subscriptions but Apple definitely stays.
If you want more before it comes out, they also made The Pacific, which follows some Marines around the island hopping campaign.
Also, for something similar but different, Generation Kill is like BoB meets a rated R road trip movie. Highly recommend.
American Godzilla is going more Showa and Toho is sticking to classic, more Godzilla is better Godzilla for me 👍
Re: The Shift. The film's writer/director is a Mormon, so the film apparently leans heavily into that specific group's view of Job.
