    The Galbrush paradox comes from the old LucasArts game "Monkey Island" and it's sequels. In the game(s) the main character (Guybrush Threepwood, wannabe pirate) get's constantly abused, put down, and is a massive (but likable) loser. This is despite the fact he wins the games and get's the girl, a girl who's shown to be MUCH more competent than Guybrush and (usually, not always) manages to get out of the problems thrown at her offscreen. Which is of course played for laughs.
    The paradox comes from the fact that a female version (the Galbrush) would be COMPLETELY unacceptable due to the amount of abuse she would take and how her male love interest would be shown to be more competent than her. Alternatively, it states that such a character would change the story from a comedy to horror or drama. Either way, it doesn't work for the original intent of the story.
    Basically, the paradox states that "This Loser is You" trope only goes one way when it comes to gender.
    I think it's origins was gamefaqs, and is actually pretty old now. Could be wrong about that detail though.

    I know so many former David Tennant fangirls -- the kind who were teenagers and young adults during his original run who had hetero crushes on the man -- who were excited about him coming back, but now feel like "their" Doctor has been taken away from them. The betrayal of the show's own fanbase goes beyond just the nerds who loved Dr Who for it's science fiction stories or whatnot, Russell T Davies has even alienated the new audience he originally brought to the show in 2005. And for what? To chase demographics who aren't watching and never will? To bolster the ESG score? It's wilful destruction. The man who so successfully brought the show back has returned to put it in it's grave.

      Mauler is just really good at his job. He brings this easy, respectful, but not boring dynamic with him everywhere he goes. Never seen him get upset. Never seen him tune out. Dead air is never an issue, but meaningful pauses are left to breathe and other people have their chance to speak. It's why he's asked to be on every stream even as basically the only person still not using a facecam. He's just that good.
      Drinker has gotten much better at streaming, but Mauler was carrying those earliest streams pretty hard.

    What Drinker just said about Scottish not registering on AI - I used to watch the news channel at work (night shift!) but we had to have the sound off and the auto-subtitles running. Whenever Gordon Brown came on the subtitles turned into some kind of foreign language that just happened to have English words in it. It was hilarious. I hope Drinker will go and watch Godzilla Minus One in the theater when it is released officially in UK. It matters because that's one way to show support for a great movie, and also to show Hollywood what they are doing wrong when it comes to movie making and production. I believe a good box office run will also encourage Toho Productions (and other foreign production companies) to release good gems of movies to the international audience. • @VanTesla
      @VanTesla Рік тому +1

      I'm glad you enjoyed it. There was barely any advertising internationally. So, word of mouth has been the main promotion outside of online reviewers. Sadly, it is a limited release window, so it won't be in theaters long besides not in as many as, say, Hollywood movies. In the USA, it has done well enough to be extended and added more theaters. Hopefully, that happens in Australia and other nations.
      Mind the Hollywood Godzilla is coming next month, and I believe that will be the reason to try and kick the superior Toho Godzilla out so as not to eat into sales. The good news is for how cheap it was and the barely existing advertising it definitely made more money back internationally besides at home in Japan. especially in Japan. A good many theaters are owned by Toho, so those theaters get nearly 100% outside, paying itself for any operating costs.

    I saw G -1 today, and I thoroughly enjoyed it as well. One of the best parts for me was the sound track, which REALLY reminded me so much of the 50's, 60's and 70's versions of the "Godzilla" movies. The personal aspects of the "Hero's Journey" for multiple Characters of the movie were so VERY well done that, very near the end of the movie, I was crying. (Along with a number of others that were at the theatre as well). There were just a few very brief moments where I felt that the movie prolonged a certain theme, or point that the director/creator (s) of the movie were trying to make. But, even with those few drawn out moments, I loved the movie.

He doesn't deny Akiko and Noriko because he is running from responsibility, he takes responsibility for everything, even things that aren't his responsibility. He is denying himself a daughter and a wife because he doesn't think he deserves happiness.

They spent less on this movie than what Hollywood would often spend on the main actor or an episode of a show?! It was just so well made and for the first time, Godzilla looked genuinely terrifying and not cartoony.

    In the 1970s, Tom Baker took over from Jon Pertwee as Doctor Who. It was a massive gamble; Pertwee had come to define Doctor Who for a whole generation. The BBC made Baker's first serial, Robot, in total before anyone got to see it. They didn't make one episode and put it out and wait for viewer reaction. After Robot, they made The Ark in Space, The Sontaran Experiment, Genesis of the Daleks, Revenge of the Cybermen, and Terror of the Zygons. ALL before a single Tom Baker episode had been broadcast. The people making Doctor Who knew what they were doing; they were professionals who had confidence in their abilities. THEY looked at Baker's performance in Robot and made adjustments to his subsequent episodes accordingly. Today, the audience is allowed to rule everything. If Doctor Who had been made to the modern method, there's every chance Baker's legendary run would never have happened - or if it did it would have been unrecognisable. Creators have to have confidence in their abilities; the suits that run things have to have confidence in the creators; and the audience have to have confidence in all of them. That was how we did things in the 1960s and 1970s, and the programmes that were made then have become an ineradicable part of TV history.

    18:48 The term kamikaze has a really interesting story to it. It's usually translated as "Divine Wind" , but is otherwise just collated with suicide-bombing. The term dates back to the era when the Mongols ruled over China and Korea, and had their sights set on Japan. They sent a fleet to invade, and would have sacked the islands with relative ease. But then a bad storm came, out of season, and wrecked the fleet. The Mongols built another fleet, and the same thing happened. This seeming miracle is where the term "kamikaze" drew its fame. In WW2, getting desperate, the Japanese military tried to force a third such miracle - or at least, in temporal terms, inflict enough material and morale damage that the Allies would eventually abandon the effort.
