A little tip from BriansMobile....If the car is your only means of transportation, before removing the drive belts and P/S pump, loosen the crank bolt asap, that way if you can't do it with the tools you have at hand, you have fewer steps to get the car drivable to go get what you need to get that PITA loose..

Great job!.... I like to have the "factory OEM" service manual by my side for reference, like when you were removing the engine mount, if you had the manual you would have already known about the retainer that needed to be loosened. Didn't lose much time, I know, but it just helps the job go smoother. Like below where I commented, having the service manual with me made installing the belts and getting the tension correct the first time a lot easier... Again, thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge with us....

Many kits out there,i'm getting the one with all the seals, valve cover gasket,Aisin pump, both belts obviously.Did it at 100k,now at 180k.I just did the belts, tensioners and pump at 100k.Seeping oil thru valve cover gasket, while i'm in there might as well do the cam & crank seals.It's an "02 SE I bought in "04 with 19k,just put a reman trans in it(had a trans shop do it), body is clean, new front end suspension kit,Hawk rotors & ceramic pads,KYB struts, rear subframe, front K member with back beam, new fuel tank-all done in my garage!Always Mobil 1 & RP filter.Frame members & suspension(mostly urethane bushes) from ebay, RockAuto,etc.The only way all this makes any sense is that it was all my labor-except for trans(a few buddies as well).Car drives great & is totally safe for my college student kid!BTW....Great Video-you've got a way about you man.Thank you

There are also 2 notches on the back side of the cam pulley/sprocket that when at TDC will line up with the top of the head.

This is the best video I've seen on this job! You have detailed it like a pro! The video is sharp and you can see all of the details. I just bought the Milwaukee 2763 impact wrench. It has 1100 ft-lbs of breaking torque and 700 ft-lbs of fastening torque. I'm wondering whether it will turn this notorious bolt? Most people who own the Milwaukee 2763 say it's The Beast! I wonder? They're saying that it's stronger than Snap-On & IR's top of the line. This is a new model, the old one was only 400 ft-lbs of fastening torque and 900 ft-lbs of breaking torque. After looking at this video I'm buying the chain strap and the 3/4" breaker bar. Thanks for the great video. I needed this video!!!
ERROL DILON Sometimes even with a torque wrench, the bolt won't come off because its so rusted. It's common that it get stuck like that. As for the torque wrench you're describing, we're not too sure since every car is different. If it's been serviced or been kept in top shape condition, it'll probably be easy to remove that bolt. GL!
I just used a 1996 Honda Civic EX attached to a strap to loosen that damn bolt...... 😂😂

There is a special tool that's used in the crankshaft pully the hexagon cutout is where that goes made to get it off

ronnie harris If you make sure that the crankshaft bolt will come off (by having it pre-loosened by a shop or having multiple ways to attempt it), then it will take around 4 hours, for an experienced person, and up to 8 hours for amateurs. If you want the job to take a day or less, this is a must.

little trick for honda crank bolts, or any crank bolt for that matter.
Ive done several supercharger installs using this method.
First get the car warmed up, then turn it off. Take a can of compressed air hold it upside down while spraying so its gets the the crank bolt really frosty. Do this for a minute or 2. After that they come off pretty easy, just a breaker bar will usually do the trick. You still need the Honda removal tool to stop the pulley from spinning though.
+ERROL DILON If it's a manual transmission it can be chocked in first gear to arrest the pulley and the highly esteemed impact gun will work wonderfully, as you note. ; ] Mine came off that way with the pulley free-spinning due to a suspected screw-up on the part of someone I entrusted with a major repair. I've also had it suggested that the starter motor be taken off, after which a pry bar can be inserted into the flywheel teeth to lock the crankshaft. One UA-cam uploader I encountered did that with an automatic. The second method seems iffy and cumbersome.
I THINK 'Real Tool Reviews' is the channel here where I saw a great and detailed side-by-side review of the big Milwaukee compared with its Ingersoll Rand counterpart. While I would go for the IR first, I'd certainly not turn down the Milwaukee. ; ] Don't they both deliver over 1,000 lb./ft. of loosening torque? Holy crap, with that kind of power I'd feel like I owned the universe! I'm no pro mechanic, but I'd love to have one of those.

Great video but I saw something that made me cringe a little. When you were rolling the belt around after installing I noticed tons of slack between the cam pulley and crank pulley. Also on a Honda you have to loosen the tensioner then rotate the cam 3 teeth counterclockwise to set tensioner correctly. There is a TSB from Honda on that. If you don't the tensioner spring will stress and break. Seen many of them do it. I found out the hard way on that. Your video was very well made though.
This is true I noticed this video doesn't have this step at all which kind of is a vital step... That's why it has a maintenance hole and this video doesn't discuss that at all. I wonder if this dude checked the tension on the belt before to make sure it was the same as after cause it was pretty damn tight when I took mine off!
Yes the cam moves 3 teeth, but make sure you do it by turning the crank, so it pulls the belt tight while turning the cam 3 teeth therefore transferring any slack to the tensioner side...Turning using the cam sprocket causes an increase in slack between the cam and crank then you will have to follow by turning the crank anyway to take up the slack.This I learned from my trusty "Honda" Repair Manual. Thanks!
Dano C. Thanks for clearing that up. I wasn't very clear in my reply. I always use the crank bolt to turn it. I've done a lot of these at work where we specialize in Imports. Like I said I learned the hard way by setting the tensioner and thought all was well. It came back 6 months later with broken tensioner and bent all the valves. Thats how I found the TSB from Honda.

So if you don't have access to this tool, and you also don't have the chain tool he's using in the video, because this repair has to be done in a timely fashion, what other option do you have for pulling it out?
Hey thanks for the video, I have an Accord 2000 lx, the turn signal is stuck on but doesn't blink on eith front nor back side, driver side headlight is off only in high beam but the passenger side is on/functional, the wiper blades are on and stays as long as my headlights are on unless I disconnect the fuse. Any advise on how to fix this issue.

I’m not sure on the two 10mm bolts that hold tensioner arms. It is very confusing even with a book. I’ve seen another video where you remove the 10mm bolt on the tensioner for the timing and put it in the balance shafts belt tensioner.
At 15:53, where he said there was a bolt missing, that's not a true statement. Actually, there's not supposed to be a bolt there (to the left of the tensioner pulley) after the job is complete. Most instruction manuals for this job say to put a 6 mm bolt (25 mm long, I think) in there temporarily to assist you with holding the tensioner from flopping around when doing the job. Whoever did the job previously on my 2.2L Accord, failed to remove that bolt and almost caused me to bend my car's valves had I not realized something wasn't right after I attempted to tighten my timing belt using the 3 cam sprocket teeth method. That little bolt prevented my belt from tightening at all, and the crank sprocket began skipping teeth when I tried to turn it back to TDC.

Those crankshaft bolts can be a real bear to get loose sometimes, I use a trick my dad taught me. Just brace your socket bar against a frame member or similar strong object then give the starter motor a quick hit, instant loose bolt.

However, these well-intentioned folks are overlooking the critical fact that disappointed me one day once my intellect kicked in above Circus Chimp level: the 'starter bump' technique won't work on most Honda engines because the crankshaft rotates counter-clockwise towards the front of the car, with the crank pulley and cam on the driver side.
This technique will unfortunately not work and may risk some damage or injury if tried on most Hondas. The cars on which you''ll see it effectively demonstrated all have their engines installed with the crank pulley on the passenger side -- essentially 'clockwise' in rotation. A craptacular moment awaits the Honda-repairing soul who thinks he's finally found a solution in this method. My nephew dropped by with an electric Hilti impact. If you can find power tool assistance, you will be grateful for it. ; ]
Yea dont do that on a honda cause it rotates in direction thatll tighten the bolt. Ive heard of ppl snapping the bolt into the crank making that mistake!!

It might be a different engine. I would go and compare the 2 and see if its the same.

You can buy gates belt, just buy the WP separately, such brand like Aisin.

yes, you always want to replace the water pump, thermostat, timing belt, timing belt tensioner etc... etc... it should all come in the kit.

Should of let the ir 2135ti pound on that crank bolt longer than that, let it impact at least 10 seconds and don't do short burst, just hold on to the trigger and let it do its job
south park , the ir 2135ti has 780 ft-lbs of torque. Most people say the bolt has 800 ft-lbs of torque needed to break it. I bought the Milwaukee 2763 & it has 1100 ft-lbs of breaking torque. I can't wait to try it on this bolt. I'm about to do this same job.
ERROL DILON sometimes my ir2135timax can do it and can't do it, and that's when I bring out my nitrocat 1250k and always comes out, before my ir2135timax could never do it until I've changed all my pipes and hose to 1/2, also change my coupler and fittings to 3/8T with 1/4 npt and it's night and day difference, now I've got the lisle honda crank socket and it can't wait till I get a TB job. I hear nothing but good things about that m18 fuel impact, I'm looking at the dewalt dcf899hb2 and debating on it.
@@erroldillon1548 I have the Harbor Freight Baugher 1050ftlb. Using standard impact deep socket, did not do it, but I have seen other guys use a heavier weight impact socket and have success. Ended up using a 25" breaker bar and stabilizer.

ProDemand shows that "missing bolt" is there to temporarily put a cover bolt in to relieve tension while working. Not really necessary though.

Hey bud trying to rule out timing,but throttle seem stuck checked the intake lip and its moves when accerater is applied cld it be throttle or idle sensor.
davidlucy0327 do you have a check engine light? if its idle, the idle will be either high or low and fluctuates. If it's throttle, you can try to clean the throttle body plate and see if it made a difference. Any video for this problem?

Bossymma7 Make sure all the bolts are out, you can try prying each sides of the valve cover and lift it up, it should just come out without any problems.

I did change the timing belt and water pump I install right but something I heard noisy when the engine running could be a belt? then when I repeat again take off back everything from the cover and and tension, I adjusted the belt, everything is done, then when I start the engine, is noisy first start but running right, only when yous start the engine, the I repeat back again, take off everything, the when I done, start back is going back noisy when the engine running, Did missed something adjustment? please let me know, thank you Arnold

Hey for the crankshaft gear do you need a gear puller to take it off or will it come off by hand after you remove the key? My front crank seal is leaking.
It'll come off by hand after you remove the key, make sure not to lose the key.

+Pilpez C highest we've seen was on a Mitsubishi, which had 149k miles. We wouldn't recommend pushing it over 120k because once the belt snaps, its possible that there can be internal damage.

Ive got 200k on my original belt. 02 accord 2.3 litre. Another guy says he has 340k on his belt on one of the vids.

+NutzAboutBolts Here's a brief history on what I've done: Oil, Oil filter, valve cover gasket, alternator, battery, oil pan gasket, Distributor (cap, rotor, wires and spark plugs), air filter, mid exhaust, muffler, brakes, rotor, caliper, spindle, brake booster, shocks. But, nothing major, like head, transmission, clutch timing belt, etc. Let me know if you still don't recommend me doing it. Thanks. Cris

I know it's been 2 years, but a big yes! You can do it and I'm sure you've done it by now. right? And know that it's not that it's hard, but that it's time consuming, and you need to take your time. Be patient. Also having the right tools is pretty much a must. A lot of us think once you get the crank pulley bolt loose (lol) the hardest part is behind you. Right? Check your work, especially the timing. take the spark plugs out (makes it easier) and turn the engine manually to check your timing marks and tension.
You won't be a beginner once you have finished! :)
at 40:21 the bolt that you were putting in snapped in half. I think half of it is still in it. Can I get it out or is it too complicated and i have to take it to a mechanic?

If the balance belt broke, is that a total catastrophe like a broken timing belt?
Not quite as bad but that belt drives the oil pump also so most likely the oil pressure light would come on. If the light doesn't come on then at some point the engine would die from lack of lubrication.
Do you recommend OEM for the water pump and belt?
dufftime We always recommend OEM over after market parts. Sometimes aftermarket parts doesn't fit.

You just replace it. It doesn't add much cost and because you don't replace the timing belt that frequently you replace the water pump when you can.
Before I pull everything apart just for a water pump. Is the reason for my question. But yes! Once I knew it was bad. It made since to replace timing as well

I think the threaded 6mm hole is to use one of the bolts from the timing cover to hold the rear bearing in place when you put the new belt on.

This is so overwhelming just for a stupid water pump I was gonna do a seal kit on my power stearing and replacing the alternator and I thought hey I might as well do the water pump but what the Frick I have to remove the tire the valve cover lift the engine and remove the motor mount oh lord what the shit

+ctngeneral should check timing. If its way off, you probably didn't line up the timing belt right.

SeungJoon Hyun yes is better to do it at the same time so you wont have to do all that work again if it fails later on and if you paing money to replace your timing belt you save money bcs you wont have to pay again for the labor if the water pump fails later on

Don't blame you, its just slightly a pain in the ass. The belt cover screws on my car got stripped by the previous owner, and it was like 110°F. I'll prob do it next spring 🙄
