  • There are lots of videos out there on tooling leather... but not many of them are for the very beginner. Here, I show how to use the basic 7-piece stamp set that many of us start with when we first try our hands at leatherwork.

    A great thing about this video: UA-cam is full of people showing how to do things with "special and high dollar tools" Aaron is showing and proving that even a beginner set can get you some great results until you grow into the craft. 💯

    I wouldn't consider myself a beginner, but sometimes I like watching videos like this. Nothing wrong with looking back where you started, plus sometimes it makes me realize bad habits I've picked up along the way and makes me realize to fix it. 🤣

    What you’re maybe lacking in advanced lighting, audio and other fancy equipment, you MORE than make up with good natures and super helpful content and spirit.
    I already feel much more likely to get into leather crafts after watching this video.
    Thank you, sir.

    I started working for a couple who do leatherwork and woodworking projects. My boss wanted me to start learning how to tool leather to free him up to do other projects. I am so excited! I’m glad I found your videos to practice when I’m off work.

    Tooling is something I decided a while back I wouldn’t attempt. You have made this seem simple and doable. Now I’m going to try it!

      Didn’t mean simple to do, just a few simple techniques and doable if you don’t mind meticulous work and detailing that takes a few hours.

    I always thought hand tooling leather would be hard, but you have to start somewhere. Ive done a couple holsters now and they turned out very nice. Now im going to do this type on my western holster ! Thank You !!

    The hardest thing for me about the swivel knife is accidentally undercutting and ending up with a piece that pulls off the grain of the leather. Any tips?

I have a question though how are you hammering so quietly are you editing the sound when you edit the video or is it your work surface I really want to get into tooling but I live in a apartment and I don't want to get evicted I would really appreciate your advice Please And Thank You.

      My table is VERY solid. When I used to do this in the barracks, I'd use a large cutting board in my lap with a rubber pad and then the stone on top of it. Wasn't always the most comfortable position but it got the job done.

    Right out of the box, mine has a serious burr on one side of the blade, it ran all along one side, the tip was ground so forcefully to one side it left that burr. I didn't even use it for that, not until I find my honing stone to polish it out, then strope it a few hundred times to sharpen it. These tools come in pretty bad shape...

      @@makersleathersupply1220 Do you inspect all the stuff made from China and fix it before you ship it? I might buy from you if you do.

    • @makersleathersupply1220
      @makersleathersupply1220  Рік тому +1

      @chrisgriffith1573 I don't need to inspect each tool. My suppliers know my standards and that they won't be our suppliers any more if those standards are not met. The difference between a company like mine and Amazon is that not just anyone will be represented by Maker's.

    • @chrisgriffith1573
      @chrisgriffith1573 Рік тому

      @@makersleathersupply1220 I only say that because I know that no matter who is selling these swivel knives, they are made in China and likely made in one factory, no matter who boxes it with their name and various other items, so it comes down to distribution being the difference, not the quality. Most of China is rolling the dice atm on nearly anything they move. Sadly, to stay competitive, you'll need to box more or less of these tools they produce, they just aren't being made anywhere else for China's ability to move volume and price that forces anyone else out of the game.

    • @makersleathersupply1220
      @makersleathersupply1220  Рік тому +1

      @@chrisgriffith1573 I can agree with this, but our budget swivel knives are made in Taiwan in a much better factory.

  • @VividWorkwear
    @VividWorkwear Рік тому

    This is really helpful, BUT for most of the video it is impossible to see what you are doing in any detail due to the reflection of the light you have used making the leather so bright there is no detail. We can only see anything when it it is intermittently shaded by your hand or your maul.
