- Tool - Lateralus (guitar cover / playthrough)
One of the deepest, most creative, and fun to play Tool songs! More about the meaning: • How Tool Used Math to ...
Apologies if this video is not perfect, I know the tabs are slightly out of timing at some points (really hard to edit with the in-song tempo changes) and my playing is also not perfect.
Nothing on my channel is monetized!
Don't overthink the time signatures, just feel the rhythm and keep going!

Lyrics:
Black then white are all I see
In my infancy.
Red and yellow then came to be,
Reaching out to me,
Lets me see.
As below, so above and beyond,
I imagine drawn beyond the lines of reason.
Push the envelope. Watch it bend.
Over-thinking, over-analyzing separates the body from the mind.
Withering my intuition, missing opportunities and I must
Feed my will to feel my moment drawing way outside the lines.
Black then white are all I see
In my infancy.
Red and yellow then came to be,
Reaching out to me.
Lets me see
There is so much more
And beckons me
To look through to these
Infinite possibilities.
As below, so above and beyond,
I imagine drawn outside the lines of reason.
Push the envelope. Watch it bend.
Over-thinking, over-analyzing separates the body from the mind.
Withering my intuition, leaving opportunities behind.
Feed my will to feel this moment urging me to cross the line.
Reaching out to embrace the random.
Reaching out to embrace whatever may come.
I embrace my desire to
I embrace my desire to feel the rhythm, to feel connected
Enough to step aside and weep like a widow
To feel inspired, to fathom the power,
To witness the beauty, to bathe in the fountain,
To swing on the spiral, to swing on the spiral,
To swing on the spiral of our divinity and still be a human.
With my feet upon the ground
I lose myself between the sounds
And open wide to suck it in.
I feel it move across my skin.
I'm reaching up and reaching out.
I'm reaching for the random or whatever will bewilder me.
Whatever will bewilder me.
And following our will and wind
We may just go where no one's been.
We'll ride the spiral to the end
And may just go where no one's been.
Spiral out. Keep going. [4x]

I meant to redo this video and improve the tab sync and my playing. However there already is a perfect video, check out Max Niessl's one ua-cam.com/video/ff1zdt2Dvtg/v-deo.html
Dude, he's a cheater. You play way better than him. Some of his early Tool covers are edited and you can see his hand is kinda "attached" from another video and the audio was recorded separately.
Spiral out, keep going!
@NIXR haha thanks… no worries, we all started at some point. After learning some basics like alternate picking, palm muting, hammer-ons, pull-offs and the D minor scale, some Tool Songs are actually not that difficult to learn! Just keep practicing!
@@SpiralOutGuitar But this one is!
It's still so much fun, even if the timing is a mystery.
this cover is amazing but especially at the end.... that riff is literally legendary, so much power behind it, fucking insane dude keep it up
That's why I wanted to lean this song in the first place, to know how to play this epic ending...
Thank you so much for this video. I toy around with the guitar a little mainly to develop an interest for my son who has Autism I heard Lateralus come on xm radio today and I always loved that opening part. I was thinking what a cool little jam that first part would be on acoustic. I don't know how to read notes and I simply assumed it would be ridiculously difficult. However the way you show the tabs and play along is perfect. I started watching your video an hr or so ago and I'm starting to see how easy that first part is to pick up for a beginner. I am definitely a subscriber now. Thanks from Connecticut!
I dont think ive seen someone include tablature before, brilliant.
AI Robut check out max niessls covers he has tabs on them all
Beginner here, aiming on getting down the intro in an attempt to learn the very basics. One of my favorite intros to any song...ever, so at least it's a fun one! Keep going... Also, it was fun to watch this in its entirety and attempt to make sense as to what's being played, when and how. I'll be re-watching this one for sure as the months march on.
Hell yeah man! Killed it! I stopped playing about two years ago when my dad died. But I found a bunch of tool recorded on vinyl that were his and started listening to them again, then fear inoculum came out and I fell in love with that album. Thankfully I started playing guitar again! I’m trying to learning all the tool songs now! Thinking about getting a new Gibson too! Rock on bro!
All the best bro!
I’m sorry about your dad bro!!!
Do it bro!!! Guitar 🎸 playing saved my life…..
The power when you play the chorus riff 🥴🥴🤩🤩
Bro how did you get the pinch so perfectly in the solo!?? I’ve never heard anyone do that so fucking cleanly. Mind blowing.
That hammer on at 2:16 gets me everytime
You just earned my subscription. Rock on brother. I play so much Tool on my guitar i am constantly searching vids. This one is so clean. I LOVE LOVE LOVE that silver burst.
As a musician who hasn't played guitar, I really enjoyed this and following along in the sheet music to keep my mind in time. Thanks, dude 🤙
Managed to play this all the way through today, thank you my friend.
Thanks for this! Would be nice if the tab were synced to the track, but I understand the difficulty since they don't record to a click. Still very valuable for learning the song.
Yes syncing the tab and song is a bit of editing nightmare... Many tool songs have tempo variations, often just 2-5 BPMs but still quite challenging since it is not just once but several times during songs.
thanks bro, i was looking for this video years ago, greetings from tampico, México
Always loved tool and this video means a lot, thanks
Beautiful ❤
yio that a nice one !! nice video my friend keep rocking !!!
Thanks bro, shred on!
Awesome! Thnx man
Nice cover
I really apreciate the tabs bro! 10Q
Yep! It seems diferent from what he is playing
aweesooooooooooooome i loved it
nice job
Excelente
Great.
That little thing you do at 1:50 sounds badass, how do you do it
Looks like a fretboard slide, basically picking softly one time while simultaneously sliding his finger across the string. But he says his guitar is silent so might just be miming.
The guitar is muted there, you are hearing the bass.
I have that same guitar. Bad ass.
what is the full name of this Epiphone?
@@schjemte super late comment but its an Epiphone Limited Edition Silverburst Les Paul
Maestro, el video de mis sueños, ahora a por la guitarra y el ampli
Hey dude insane cover, could u help me understand better the solo part that uses the Wah Wah pedal, like I'm planning to do a cover and this part is kinda tricky for me
🤟🏻
Spiral out bro!
nice. Where did you buy your guitar?
eBay. Got it used with the JB in the bridge for $360. Very happy with it.
Great cover! Are you using pedals for echo and distortion? Or is the amp?
I am using a multieffects unit (Boss GT100)
@@SpiralOutGuitar thanks! I've got the GT-1. For the distortion, I'm trying with the Tube Screamer but the sound is too thick, I'm testing with an EQ in the chain. Thanks!
You need to reverse your neck pickup as Adam Jones intended
What effects did you use?
how's that guitar? I'm 99% close to buying it.
I love it, esp with the JB in the bridge. Great for toolin' around. But like with any other guitar, it depends on how well action and intonation is set up.
@Kendall Greer great, enjoy it! 🎸
@@SpiralOutGuitar have you tried the studio LP. I might get it in ebony
@@ihateusernames6834 no I haven't, but I have another Epiphone I'm very happy with...
I have been practicing tool songs on a Epiphone Gothic Les Paul in all matte black. I love it for matching Adam's sound because this Epiphone is actually a solid mahogany body like real GibsonLP plus the humbucker pickups... it's a great guitar for playing Tool shit. Love it! Spiral my friend
could of mentioned its in dropped d tuning
What’s the strumming pattern
My soul in a song! 🖤🔥🤘🔥🎸🔥👁️🔥🌀🔥
Bad ass cover and beautiful girl! 🤩🤘🔥🖤🔥🎸🔥🫶
What is the tuning for this song, drop D?
Yes, Drop D as all Tool songs
Tunning?
Drop D, like all tool songs (DADGBE)
Can' we not hear you playing at all? Just the studio track?
Ahhhhhhhhhaaaaaahahah!!! I missed the caption that comes up and says you were on mute because I was skipping ahead until the next chorus. Mystery solved!
In my opinion, you're too good to not have the track playing second fiddle to your guitar's volume...but I've watched a lot of people play this and there's always something during the chorus that doesn't look 100% to me. Then there's this vid of the best looking chorus I've seen.....but I can't hear your guitar basically at all during the chorus!!
Ok, I've vented and feel better. Keep swinging on the spiral, man!
Tuning?
you need to tune the E string to D
Tab isn't synced at all though. I mean I get that it's probably very difficult, but what's the point then.
Opening distortion riff is not correct
bro youre playing wrong on the second solo
A LOT OF DELAY WITH THE TAB, FIX IT
Your tabs are always off time
