    I've been down the ram pump rabbit hole over the last few days, and I can't help but wonder why (short of the cost), a small commercially built pressure tank wouldn't work in place of inner tubes and tennis balls and pool noodles.. They're built specifically with a diaphragm to do exactly what you're doing, and they're safe for potable water.. I can't imagine what water tastes like after it's run past a trio of tennis balls... :) Regardless, thanks so much for introducing me to these pumps. I've been contemplating ways to move water over some pretty long distances on my property, and this will definitely do the trick!

    To drill a tiny hole, 1/32 in, just below the check valve under the pressure tank would remedy the air-loss in the pressure tank entirely. I know it is somewhat counter--intuitive, but it works. You will see water squirting out, but every time, just before the valve acts, it sucks in a small amount of air into the pipe. My grandpa used an old hydraulic ram pump some 40 years ago and he explained that this little hole was crucial to the function, otherwise the pressure tank would lose its air and the pumping would stop.

      Boosts aren't as wasteful though, but yeah, the concept is there. It's always amazed me how efficient boosts are though, you're shorting the supply. But when you think about it more, as you're modulating for how long it happens and so it averages out the Cu and Fe losses, which come way down to a pretty small level. Doesn't work for water haha.

    Well that settles that. Thanks! Glad to have a visual.. that explains why the tennis balls didn't do very well. Anything that doesn't hold up the "volume area" for the PC.. effectively isn't there as air pressure space. Keep up the great tests Seth! When you read deep into ram pump design.. all the old school stuff says use a snifter valve and infuse air into the pc with that. I have been wanting to for a while.. but that hole size is critical. I have some ideas though. cheers!

    • @LandtoHouse
      @LandtoHouse  4 роки тому

      Yes the hole size is very important! the couple times I have tried did not go so well. I have a small valve used in a Cpap machine. I wonder if that will work? It would allow some water out but I am not sure that it would allow enough air to enter the pump to replenish what is lost. This test is on the list for the summer if I can find time to make it.

    The water level went down because the air volume increased. I bet tiny bubbles in the standpipe introduced more air into the chamber. You had delivery shut off, so they couldn't escape that way. The pressure seemed about the same as when it had more water volume, so that backs up that there had to be more total air introduced.

    • @CR3W1SH03S

      My guess is that the water level went down without losing pressure (as noted when you opened the drain valve) because dissolved air in the water escaped and filled the top of the pressure tank. There is a lot of air in water.

    The water level did went back down due to the accummulation of air in the tank. You see, there are tiny air bubbles that go with the water or air dissolved in the water. I predicted as I watched your video that the moment you open the drain valve, there will be too much air that will come out, and, obviously there was!

    I think you should consider putting a shrader valve on the top cap of your pressure tank, you could incorporate a gauge in the same plumbing to check air pressure.. You could release the pressure when experimenting to make it less stressful and wearing on the ball balve. Also, you could experiment with injecting air pressure into the pressure tank besides the amount that is passively there at the start by the size and shape of the tank itself. You could add air volume with a bicycle pump. Not that it is needed, but in the spirit of experimentation, it would give you the effective results of a longer or wider pressure tank, while keeping the size as it is. This might be useful for instalations that do not have the vertical room for the tall riser. Just some random thoughts. Great video, oh, and Ive asked before, but havent heard back WHY USE PRESSURE TANK FILLER AT ALL? It seems unnecessary to me. What is the advantage. The air is already there. Databyter

    what if you add a valve that you can attach a bike pump to so you could add more air pressure seeing as air can compress where as liquids are hard to compress. Would that increase results making it push more or interfere?

    100 videos on ram pumps !!!! Guess I'll have to allocate more time. I really like the clear pressure pipe so we can see what is going on and I saw in another of your videos that you added a pressure gauge on the pressure pipe. I think I've missed the initial video that described why you are adding more compressible medium inside the pressure pipe and the benefit that that gives. Interesting that air started to occur after a while in the pressure pipe - would that indicate that the tennis balls or bicycle tubes may not be necessary?
    Did you experiment with different heights and shapes for the pressure pipe? Some designs show more of a big round bulb than a pressure pipe.

  • @rronmar
    @rronmar 3 роки тому

    Cool video. If you are trying to form a better accumulator, you could simply pre-charge the tank with air... you are looking for enough air in the tank so the water level is at about 2/3-3/4 full and it lowers down to about 1/4-1/3 at minimum pressure. Put a pressure relief valve on the output so the water you draw off passes thru it, with a spring that stops the flow at the minimum pressure to keep you from loosing the air charge. As you saw in your demo, aireated water in the input can add air volume to the accumulator, y0u will have to adjust the water level/pressure relationship occasionally...

    I've never heard of a ram pump before today and I've watched a few of your videos on them now. In my ignorance I thought of a question. If you remove the PVC pipe (the one you put the tennis balls in) and replaced it with something much bigger, like a small propane tank, would the added air volume increase water pressure at the end of the line?

    • @LandtoHouse
      @LandtoHouse  4 роки тому +2

      Thank you for watching. That's a valid question. Pressure tanks basically smooth out the output. Adding a larger tank does not increase the output. The output is based on the input head pressure. The pressure tank can only build to the pressure of the input head pressure. That's a mouthful haha

  • @andrewsmith9048

    To work properly the chamber needs some kind compressible medium to store and release the energy. Commercial ram pumps have "snifter" valves to introduce air into the presure tank on each cycle . So the more to an extent more captive air more water can be move in a cycle.

    Ok might I render a suggestion that you try a 1¼" pvc pipe fitted with test plugs = to ¼ the size of your expansion tank.
    Reason for the test plugs, instead of caps, because they fit to the inside diameter of the pipe, not over the outside.
    Also think that if you were to put a Schrader valve into the top cap you could pressure the expansion tank to about 10 psi.

    • @rronmar

      You are turning the inertia of water in motion into a pressure spike when its motion is suddenly halted by the slamming exit valve. A larger volume of water in motion = a larger pressure pulse volume. A larger pipe would produce greater volume, but managing that exit valve gets more difficult as size increases. Anything that can “stretch” and absorb that energy can lessen the pulse and allow it to push back up the pipe instead of keeping the exit check valve open and pushing more water into the collection chamber. Because you are trying to capture a pulse, you want the final few feet of the structure to be as rigid as possible so more energy gets concentrated against the exit check and forced into the tank(steel would be better than plastic). Notice the feed pipe moving with each pulse in this video, thats lost energy escaping. You also want the feed pipe to be as straight as possible...

    The water level went back down because of the accumulated air pressure... every time the valve slams shut and then opens, it's sucking in little gulps of air... that would be something to measure... need to get your pressure gauge on it now...

    What is the volume of waste water, escaping through the check valve, compaired to the volume if water that is actually pumpped to it's destination? I love the idea of a ram pump but it seems a little inefficient. Though that wouldn't stop me using one if the waste could just pass back into a stream like your setup. Unfortunatly I am in a city and liked the idea of using one to transfer water from a rain water collection system to an elevated water storage tank to then feed a hose in the same was you use yours.

    • @LandtoHouse
      @LandtoHouse  4 роки тому +2

      When using the ram pump in a creek it is essentially 100% efficient. But realistically in a closed system like your rainwater storage the pump is only about 10% efficient. In other words only 10 gallons out of 100 will make it to the top. Not really worth using the ram pump in a closed system like that. You might be better off with a 12-volt solar pump

    Depending on your water source, you could have a bit of dissolved air or microbubbles in your drive line which come out of solution in the pressure tank and increased the mass of air in your pressure tank. Alternatively, you may have a small leak after the waste valve which is allowing air into your system. One way or another, air was introduced into the pressure tank over the course of 3 days.

    • @porcus123
      @porcus123 Рік тому +1

      you cant have air before the release valve, this only works because water doesnt compress, the kinetic energy of 1kg of water falling 10 m can be used to raise 0.5kg 20 m. those air bubbles would compress and expand some of the pressure. what the guy could do is stuff a sealed balloon in the tank.

  • @Skydiverjoe2871

    @8:30 i wonder if its building air inside because of small air bubbles feeding the pump from upstream, the air bubbles are being compressed and entering the clear tube where it is unable to escape

    The increased air is from the tennis balls expelling there pressure. Tennis balls come pressurized. This is why they are in an air tight can.

    • @MrAndrewbrake
      @MrAndrewbrake 4 роки тому +8

      There was far more air in that pressure tank than was ever in the balls, and the balls still had pressure when taken out. Most likely explanation is bubbles in the water being pushed into the pressure tank. The displaced water in the pressure tank would have been escaping back out the one way valve (you will always lose some water as the valve closes)

    • @Jameswrightdavid

      No, it is from entrained water. The early air compressors worked in a similar way. They're known as Trompes

    the air pressure in the tube is forcing the ball down against the bottom fitting creating a seal, preventing the water from entering the tube, you can see the black mark on the ball when you remove it.

    • @LandtoHouse
      @LandtoHouse  3 роки тому +1

      The ram pump will operate without a pressure tank altogether but the water hammer really kicks the pump around. The tank gives a cushion of air. The bike tube or tennis balls are to help always have an air pocket available.

    What we don't see, is how these things you put in there effect the actual operation. How many feet higher does this pump water? What is the benefit of one thing over the other? Why the bicycle inner tube? What pressure should the bladder be at? What if you had a way to pre-pressurize the chamber? What would that change? Let's say, with nothing in the tank, the air reaches 150psi at normal operation (totally guessing) what would we put in there that would resist that or be a better spring?

    • @LandtoHouse

    • @LandtoHouse
      @LandtoHouse  4 роки тому

      In large commercial pumps or the really old pumps there is a valve called a snifter valve that would replenish air with each cycle. I hope to do some more research on those this summer. ... the pump can operate with a waterlogged tank but it will hit hard and not be very efficient

  • @0TDIedits0
    @0TDIedits0 4 роки тому

    Why the water level backdown there are two hypotesis about that 1st the pipe had leck then 2nd the water pressure back- up to the check valve due to the water pressure tank level reach to the top that air dont have space anymore so the water return and find a way to exit to the check valve if when there is no leak,but if there Is a leak It will goes to the leak slowly when It reach to the maximum pressure.
