Fun race! The after-race conversation told even more about all of the craft, science, and effort there is to make a competitive, dedicated drag race car perform. Both guys seemed like true racers and nice guys. Eager to talk about their drag race creation. They are justifiably proud, especially with a 4-speed, fuel injected, 440 small block beast that spends half its track time with its nose in the air. 🚀
A real life Hot Wheels car
I always love the chats with drivers at least as much as the races themselves. Thanks for being out there doing what you do.
That 61 is a true beast!
Really enjoyed the guys at the end. Pretty cool thing they have going racing "traditional" cars kinda the old way. No electronics, restricted aerodynamics, popping wheelies intentionally for show, I mean he said they could go down almost flat but that's part of their thing. lol Neat!
That guy blew both of us away with his expertise in retro racing, and with pro trees. 👍
Corvette guy is proud of no electronics..cool car
Those guys were the most gracious competitors I’ve seen you interview to date! Full of experience and wisdom for sure. Great video Andrew !
The vettes from the sixties are some of the sexiest cars ever made.
👍 Fully agree!
Yes, in that form, not just all stock show cars
@@rader1175 This vette is a show car. It had every bit of attention to detail go into making it a period correct gasser as any bone stock restoration.
@@DucknCoverin This vette is a race car. Restored yes, with race patina, one example is rubber on rear panel, that u can see. Not one u just shine. As is my red 62 C1, 406 535 hp, we run, race , do burnouts with these cars. What they were made for. Fun
Brought back great memories, Andrew. Best friend had that exact 1961 Corvette in Fawn Beige. We worked on that for the summer of 1965, he put in a 301 motor, ported heads, Headman headers. 4 speed, 4.56 rear, Atlas Bucron tires out back on chrome reverse wheels and 260 Sunoco gas. He was quick back then but a low 7 sec. car is a STREETER today and no big thing! Great video and congrats on 21K subscribers. Just shows that your interviews sure give folks lots of information!
Awesome show as always Andrew, Thanks!
That Vette is something else. And the crew chief and driver supercool👍
I always enjoy seeing what pure 1960s tech can do. I think people should appreciate this gasser is an antique with no modern speed equipment. This type of car has been deemed wholly inadequate and obsolete in competitive drag racing for at least half a century. It’s very much an antique that competes with other antiques in nostalgia class racing that do not allow modern technology.
Banging gears in something with that kind of suspension going that quick is way, way harder than running a power glide or an electric car. 4 speed, 4 wheelies sounds about right!
It’s also pretty brutal with a power glide. Few years ago I drove an Anglia gasser a couple times for a friend who broke his leg. Had a big block olds and PG. Took everything I had to keep it in the grove. Gassers are a handful no matter what. Gobs of power and Stone Age tech. The only thing sketchier in my opinion is throwing your leg over a top fuel bike.
Really enjoyed that one Andrew. Way to take it graciously. Nice interview too. What impresses me most though are daily drivers that can do what your car does....go down the track in the low 9's! I remember the days when we would say a stock car is fast when they hit the 1/4 mile in under 14 seconds.
Best race so far this year! Thanks for sharing your good times at the track. Be safe.
Definitely one of the more exciting ones! But if I could choose only one, the 1/4 mile race with the ‘64 Chevelle would top even this Gasser: ua-cam.com/video/eRNB00wW9Xg/v-deo.html
00Alan was really banging those shifts!
Really enjoyed that vid. The Vette was awesome and good opponent for the Plaid. Allen and Dave are cool guys and Gassers are a whole different animal. Man that thing is FAST! 440 Small Block! Like it when Dave emphasized the point that when the front tires are off the ground it aint steering.
Right on! 👍 Great to see such an 'analog' car these days when so many guys are running automatics (usually 'Glides with only a single shift) and electronics (delay boxes for a perfect light every time)...
Rear steer only at that point. Better have that rear end set up right!
Kudos to the Corvette team and Telsa Plaid. I hold $TSLA stock but grew up in the Muscle Car era and these vintage car racers shared more than I expected (8000 RPM shifts? seat of your pants feel!) while not giving away the farm on details. Everyone was a winner here IMO.
Very impressive that you can hang with these race cars, Andrew. I know in most instances you put many of these guys in your review mirror. Great videos.
That’s just an antique gasser with a 4spd he raced. That’s not a modern car with cutting edge tech and power adders. Pure 1960s tech.
I was like, damn that Vette is fast... Stick shift!!! Are you kiddin me?! I have a shirt I wear out at the track that says real men use 3 pedals. I think that guy deserves to wear it more than me, haha. Great race and footage. Even better post race discussion. Always something to be learned from people faster than you. Thanks for taking the time and taking us for a fun ride down the track.
These guys are known as the "Swamp Monster" team at the Southeast Gasser events, always coming up out of the Florida swamps to kick butt. The next SEGA race is 4-9-22 at Shadyside Dragway in Shelby NC. If you cant be there in person,You can catch it live on UA-cam at the Southeast Gassers you tube channel
Thanks Mitch for the additional info! 👍
Next will be the Alley Cat, & Silver Streak
Had my first up close encounter with a gasser yesterday in Pueblo Colorado while doing work at his home. He owns the 1965 Dodge Detroit Shaker. Beautiful car
La mejor!!! Gracias. Hay q ganar la próxima
What brilliant competitors, bare bones Motorsport meets Tesla spaceship and all is good.
Great videos!
That Vette is insane!
That Vette sounds amazing!!
My guy pulled the tires up 4 times god damn
Great race!
Nice thanks for filming that. I guess that’s just called getting your doors blown in. Wow
👍🏻Yes it was. The Plaid does well vs street legal cars, but had nothing for the Frequent Flyer!
Damn, that's quite a gear. Good thing that motor's got ALL the rpm's to hit a decent trap speed.
Thanks 4 sharing.
I’m not a huge fan of electric vehicles yet lol. I had better start warming up to them maybe but at 56 yo, I really still enjoy the gas engines. Especially that vette! What a treat to see that great footage next to him. Great video
👍 I’m mid-50s as well, hence my deep appreciation for these cars that we race against. It’s a unique moment in history, with old and new running competitively. (Two EVs running side-by-side? It’s just not as exciting…)
Shouldn’t feel like “you better warm up to them”. It’s supposed to be a free country, where you can own whatever car you like. This whole high pressure aspect of it makes me want no part of it…and I’m a millennial.
Ridiculous Corvette. So cool to see something pull away from the Plaid but not so much that it's impossible to beat. A real challenge
Nice to occasionally see an ICE car that can take the Tesla. Good sportsmanship across the board.
I mean, he wasn't really racing the Tesla. He seemed to be testing the car on a test n tune night. It's a expedition type car for 60s era style drag racing other 60s era style gasser cars. He just so happened to beat the Tesla next to him. It's not hard to beat a electric car if you know how to setup a vehicle.
@@moabman6803 The Teslacult operates under the delusion that no IC vehicle has ever run better than a 9.3 quarter mile. And if one does? It must be the most cutting edge un street legal car to ever be assembled in some clandestine hangar at Area 51. I used to like electrics. Now I loathe them because of their whole fan club. They’re like the Reddit/Twitter of car culture. Insufferable clowns who can’t appreciate anything else. Just toxic and clueless as hell.
@@DucknCoverin Yeah it's really strange. 9.3 seconds is pretty fast, but most ICE cars don't go that fast because it's not necessary on a daily driver car. 95% of drivers don't care about having a really fast car. But if you want a daily driver ICE car that goes faster than 9.3 it's not that hard or expensive to do.
@@moabman6803 The expensive part comes with making it reliable and comfortable for the street. That’s where the Tesla gets it. A bored out 440 SB Chevy with compression through the roof isn’t very street-able. Lower compression and power adders is a good street recipe, but that’s where it gets expensive to be fast and reliable. My neighbor takes his 7 second car on the hot rod power tour pulling a support trailer behind him across country. He has a small fortune in it. I really want to like Teslas, but the culture around these cars and just utter lack of appreciation and down right seething hatred for other cars is such a turn off. It’s not everyone, but it’s enough to make me go “no thanks I’ll stick with my buggy that runs off dead dinosaurs”.
Wicked Corvette 😃😃😃
Basically two unmodified cars going toe to toe….
Thank you for the videos!
Exactly! That’s the way that Vette came from the factory 🤣
@@TeslaPlaidChannel To be fair, the speed equipment and setup on that gasser haven’t been cutting edge or relevant (aside from nostalgia class racing) in 50+ years. It’s literally an antique with antique performance parts. You did good keeping up though.
Dinosaur bones for the win.
T-Rex !
That’s a beast
I think you should emphasis that your car is stock. I think most people don't realize.
Excellent point! 👍 I'm surprised how many people at the track ask: "What are all your mods?" Can't wait until owner mods are a possibility; it's just a matter of time...
It states that wheels and tyres are not stock
@@mr.gasser4521 👍 Rear tires and wheels have indeed been swapped on this night as explained in video. (Front are stock.) Most tracks we run all stock, but at Showtime we swap the rears.
I especially meant people on the track don't realize. I think most viewers know.
Yeah….also emphasize he’s racing an antique with antique speed equipment thats been obsolete as a competitive drag car for 50+ years. I think most people don’t realize.
Cool video. Was the fourth one really a wheelie or a rebound bounce?
Perhaps! 🤔
Nice video! Was the G body and Grand national video posted? Looking forward to that thanks
Thanks, and those two races will post tomorrow 👍
Apologies! Delayed until tomorrow. But for sure will post Tuesday 👍
But you know what, since you asked, you can watch it one day early: 😃
ua-cam.com/video/EHsLdn2KQgo/v-deo.html
they seem really nice guys. dang i dont know about all that wheel lifting, pretty dangerous !!
That dang pro tree haha
That was like racing the space shuttle
Considering it’s an antique gasser with antique parts and outdated tech it kinda was like racing the space shuttle.
Holy shit he's got that vette hookin.
3:26 His reaction time is 1320, cool!
You need an aftermarket Tesla boost kit, it will increase voltage and triple the power....but it will void your guaranteed and cut your range in half
Is the Lue to the side at 1:20?
Unfortunately no. If it was, then we’d have some great sideline footage! 🎥 But Lue wasn’t at Showtime on this night…
Wow fast Vette! He got that dialed in no breakdown, spin or bog for once. Did he mention the HP?
He says 900HP at the end of the video. Slightly less than the Plaid, but about half the weight!
May I ask were this was at
Showtime Dragstrip in Pinellas Park Florida
That ‘Vette has some SERIOUSLY low rear gears! Has to be high 5’s if not low 6’s. The view from your car of its pass was insane!
5.83! I knew it had to be at least upper 5’s when he was screaming through the traps in 4th gear.
2:16 Looks like he's using a Keith Black Drag Motor 426 Hemi Block on nitrous.
Corvette is a sbc
5.6 for the Corvette?? Just ran a 5.4 2 weeks ago with the RC put me in there I NEED to race this guy! 😎
He can run as fast as 5.30s though, beware!
@@TeslaPlaidChannel I'll run him with my other car then the 4.6s car 😎😉
Corvette was Impressive!!
OMG, do I love C1 Corvettes. Best looking of all years IMHO. I hate when they cut them up but that one looks mostly intact. Great shots Andrew. By the way I suspect he was geared for low end and was topping out at 126mph. I think in the 1/4 mile you'd make it much closer.
👍 He told me it can’t run the 1/4, as it’s already near redline at the 1/8th. So for sure, the ~150MPH trap of the Plaid would more than likely pass it. The half-second lead and 126-135MPH top end of the Vette doesn’t appear to be enough to stay ahead…
All he would need to do is change his rear gear, he probably is running a 6.50 gear@@TeslaPlaidChannel You cannot beat that 61 , or the Silver Streak 58, you would beat my 62 , only having 406 - 535 hp street & strip , but then my buddy would beat you with his 70 camaro, unless you can beat a 8.02 1/4 mi.
All in fun, but we love our loud ,gear jammers. If I lose all my senses, maybe a Tesla. But great vid, must have watched a dozen or more times. Live 3 mi. from Maple Grove Dragway Pa. Will be keeping a eye on you. subscribed
This was true "Old School" vs. true "New School" amazing no electronics turbos superchargers ?? Amazing car I would have lost this race money... I was betting on the Plaid I can't win.
WOW, great video. Loved the post race conversation(s). So that’s what it takes to beat a PLAID. Now we know.
Yes 1960s tech properly dialed in is what it takes to beat the cutting edge of electrics. This isn’t a modern drag car. This is considered obsolete and wholly inadequate in modern drag racing. It runs freaking leaf springs and a truck axle up front. It’s an antique.
@Wayne Green not street legal because its noise and its smoke.
61's VS 22's
Old school beating sophisticated new school... you got to love it!!!
👍 Indeed, it was a good change of pace after about 90% going the other way 😃 (And we only run vs the fastest cars at this track, avoiding anything even remotely close to stock)
@@TeslaPlaidChannel all us gasoline guys got to do is figure out a consistent time of your Teslas that you're running in the quarter and we just build a gas model that can beat it for less money... on y'all's best day you can't get out of the mid-8s but there are gassers that can do high 7s.. with air conditioning with a great stereo system with power steering all the Creature Comforts for way less than $50,000 and come on that monsterous V8 sound you would have to have big old speakers outside your car to reproduce that same sound level that most Racers just love to hear
@@TeslaPlaidChannel I will bet 90% of the time of the cars you were racing were either 10 and 11 second cars are the ones that could get into the high nines had mechanical problems
@@stevemitchell9848 We can only race the cars that show up to the track. Yet we’ve seen plenty break badly in the lane next to us, like the GT-R that put a hole in his billet block ($50K!), or the 1000+HP Redeye that broke his driveshaft beside us, just to name two recent ones. We give plenty of props to the guys who build the way we used to when my back was younger and stronger. And also enjoy racing the guys that have a builder do it all for them (like many of guys around here). The 9.0 sec C7 Z06 in our latest video is one such example. We respect them all 👍
No need to speculate on what the competitors are running; we include all time slips (except the NTs of course). On good nights, every one is in the 9s (or 8s, we line up with plenty of them too). Yet none have made 1500 runs (all 9-10 second passes) for a total maintenance cost of $40 (wiper blades and a key fob battery).
That was crazy! I'm not suprise by the Tesla keeping up, but! I thought the Tesla will win. Awesome race!
Does a loss truly count when it's up against a 100% race car?
A loss is a loss if you accept a race.
It’s also an antique show car. Cope and seethe. The tech and speed equipment in this gasser are 50+ years old. The old man is rowing a 4spd behind a naturally aspirated SB Chevy. Even the slicks he’s running are period correct reproductions of 1960s tire tech. The whole setup of a 1960s gasser is considered antiquated and inadequate in the modern drag racing world.
GO TESLA GO
Corvette,.Bouncing like DD's. 😆 🤣 😂 😹 😆 🤣 😂
My fastest 1/4 mile was 11:64.
8’s and 9’s are crazy fast ⚡️🚙💨
@@TeslaPlaidChannel - I had a coyote run out in front of me once just as I crossed the 1/4 mile finish line at 119mph. I missed it, but the car I was racing did not.
@@HeavenGuy A bunch of turkeys went across the track in front of the Plaid last year. Thankfully it was in the runoff and I was only going 60MPH or so, easy to avoid them.
What suprise me of the Plaid is it’s “bad”(compared to other high performance cars) 60 feet time.
I had a Toyota Celica GT4 with 600hp that did high 1.3.
Tesla should have instant power plunging it from start but maybe it’s software holding it back?
5000 pounds is the main thing holding it back ⚡️🚙💨
@@TeslaPlaidChannel Understandable. Celiac was ~3300 pounds but still think Plaid don’t put full power from the start, maybe for durability.
Perhaps it can be one of the user modifications in the feature
i wish i was in that vette driver side
4 whellies...o yeahhh
what a feeling...
i still luv Tesla .
Go try to race cleetus McMcFarland
Ruby runs low sevens and he drives it cross country, so def cant call it a trailered drag car. Lol
Ancient technology gapped the EV.
But did he drive it to the track? (No)
Can he take it to work? (No)
Can he take his family on a trip? (No)
Can he make 1001 runs with no maintenance? (No)
…and so on and so on and so on…
@@TeslaPlaidChannel probably he has another car for these things.
Nice Corvette definitely not 900 horsepower probably around 550 and that car weighs about 2,500 pounds
Erase against other cars that are not street legal is that fair
more racing , less talking
Clue: That’s why the talking is all SEPARATE at the end. That’s why there’s an INDEX to skip over the discussions. And finally, you seem to be the only one that says that. Read the room. Everyone wants to hear about the specs. There are over 1000 races on this channel, maybe you could learn how to use the INDEX? ⚡️🚙💨
Lol!
Don't try & compete with big boys the electric car cool for what it is
…and yet the Tesla beats the *vast majority* of the trailered race cars it races. One is stock, the others aren’t even street legal 😳
What the hell is the tesla doing a burnout lmfao what a joke. Teslas are dumb in drag racing
And yet we win more than 90% of our races against the fastest trailered cars at our local
Florida dragstrips. Two thousand timeslips without a single broken part and the only maintenance was a set of brake pads. No fluid changes. Nothing. Teslas DOMINATE in local drag racing 👍
Yea but it's not fun to race there no pride in building a tesla, it's nothing like setting up a 67 nova and building a 700hp aftermarket dart 383 stroker motor on nitrous or forced induction and matting it to a power glide transmission witha ford 9 inch with a drag pack style suspension and brake upgrade. Note I'm being very vague especially with suspension because the only thing I know is like cal tracks and slapper bars or a 4 link rear suspension or a ladder bar set up. And using light weight tubular a arms on a GM product and a all real steel car that nova would kick ass in a small tire class. I have no issues with tesla being a economy street car but in drag racing its boring and dumb there's no pride in building the car like I said with examples above on a 67 nova, as a mechanic and true gear head electric cars in drag racing will never pull the same attention than gas power. So many diffrent set up and diffrent ways to create that old school car to do anything you want it to do. When you finish putting the last piece on that car and you fire it up and let it idle there is no other feeling of accomplishment in the world. It's easy to go to the dealership and buy a hellcat or a tesla etc and drag race it. But with a hellcat for example there is still a form of pride because of factory craftsmanship for drag racing. Tesla in my opinion are just over sized kids rc cars that can drive around on the sidewalks that are powered by a 12v battery. There's no pleasure in my opinion in driving a tesla I've driven 3 of them yes they make great torque and acceleration out of the hole but there's no fun on working on them. You can't tell me as a hot rodder and drag racer that just working on brakes is satisfying to you man. I'm just being honest. There is no bonding with the car at all you can't do anything to that tesla that is anything compared to any gas powered modern muscle or classic.
Unmmm, how old are you, may we ask? We built cars for many, many years, starting in 1983. We had 3 Camaros before 1986, at 19 years old. We were swapping camshafts at 16. Our nitrous foxbody dominated on the street, even with the 5-speed. Sure that was great fun and we wouldn’t trade that experience for anything. Older now and reliability beats backaches from fixing things every weekend. Facts here from experience both ways. How many EVs have you owned, may we ask? None? Ok great, that’s no direct experience to this era. Just sayin’. We’ve done both. That was great then, this is great now. Both have their time and place. Those that choose only one or the other are only cheating *themselves*
