About those 60-foots! Someone suggested my points about the Plaid (and gearing affecting 60-foot times) were “wrong”. Yet here’s the data from *this* night: (same track, same prep) Ave. 60-ft of the Plaid’s *4* runs: 1.60 Ave. of the Raven’s *8* runs; 1.56 Launch control used: Plaid: 2/4 (50%) Raven: 0/8 (0%) Heated up the battery: Plaid: 3/3 (100%) Raven 0/8 (0%) The Raven has done 1.49 at least twice before, and launch control clearly helps. But the Raven didn’t even use it on this night (to allow the Plaid to use it instead). Can the Plaid out 60-ft the Raven? Sure, it did for 2 of the 3 runs here, AFTER the Raven gave staging concessions (bumping in last, and only after a signal from the Plaid driver). Don’t get me wrong, I’m a total fan of the Plaid. To get the higher top speeds, simple physics requires giving up some bottom-up acceleration. (Gearing and related lever-arm equations apply here for the application of torque.) All things being equal, with over 200 more horsepower and 50mm more tire width, don’t you think the Plaid’s best (1.48) should be significantly better than the Raven’s ? (1.49) When my Plaid arrives, I WILL make over 500 passes per year, but I WON’T use launch control nor will I heat up the battery. Will my 60-foots be faster or slower than the Raven based on everything we’ve seen? You decide. OR, you can believe whatever you hear from somewhere else (other “experts” who tested differently). It’s thankfully a free country!
@@alanrickett2537 Yep, that’s a key factor too! For two distinct reasons: 1) Less unsprung weight. 2) If the overall diameter is smaller, that also essentially lowers the gearing. Hence my order for the 19”s, but note that reason 2 above does not apply with Teslas. Both the 19”s and 21”s have the same overall diameter, and trying to change this with aftermarket tires/wheels will cause the computer to freak out and shut down everything from traction control to power steering! (I tried it with some smaller Cup 2 tires last year.)
@@TeslaPlaidChannel may be unplugged performance can help with that if not I know a number of the car builders have had that issues and have managed to get round it.
Since it has a single gear and can reach 200 MPH, I think it makes sense that the taller gear sacrifices the low end. But if you change all 4 wheels/tires to a smaller diameter to change the final gear ratio, would that freak the computer out?
were you happy after the later runs? seems a little disappointed after the first :) some people are running 9.2's on the street. so its fast everywhere by the looks of things.
@scholzey...yes, very happy after the 9.3 runs. I've been racing there for over 30 years, but I'm completely new to the Tesla/electric car. I was initially disappointed because I know what a mid-high 9 second car feels like, and the Plaid feels faster than 9.7. After getting more charge and utilizing the dragstrip mode, the times were more in line with what it feels like. I think it would be a little faster if it had a completely full charge and the lighter wheels. I think that 9.24 record is going to fall pretty quickly the more of these hit the dragstrip. This car is a gamechanger.
@@2snailz135 awesome man, enjoy it! From the looks of thing, battery charge has much less impact then in the raven, someone did mid 140's with 30% charge, so still solid!
Nice runs, like the banter at the end because I was wondering what they were saying you must have.. thought a fire jacket/pant/gloves too hopefully all these tracks are pretty cool with these plaids running 9s
I’m liking the climate for racing here in Florida. Far more liberty and less oppressive regulations than where I came from (out west, I can’t even muster the courage to say the state). I choose to suit up for fire safety, by personal choice. Even though a second slower, I wear far more fire gear than many drivers in the 9’s. That’s fine. Personal choice!
Man, I was excited about getting a used ludicrous model s, because I can afford it, but after watching this I want the plaid and it's def out of range. 😭
I think it has a better chance of seeing the light of day than “full self driving”. (Too many variables: weather, construction, animals, trash, dirty cameras, potholes, etc.)
Would you see any reason to upgrade to a plaid from a performance if I dont drag race? Looks like you can keep up with pretty good - well to like 50/60mph then of course it goes to town. But on a Public street - all of the power is useless in my opinion. I never race on the street.
Cool! Some questions: 1. How long to engage drag mode for the Plaid? Motor Trend reported 8-15 minutes, Dragtimes said never more than 2. Does Tesla warn against Plaid Drag mode due to battery concerns like the S Raven? 3. What takes the Plaid out of drag mode? 4. What was the battery SOC reduction with each Plaid run? Thanks!
1( When the Plaid arrived at the track, and we both engaged our warm ups, it said “10 minutes”. The Raven said “20 minutes”. Ambient temperature and whether it was just driven make a BIG difference. If I walk up to my Raven in the morning, it might say 40 minutes. If I start it on a hot Florida night after making a couple of hard Ludicrous pulls, it might say just 5 or 10 at most. 2) I’m not sure, I wasn’t in the Plaid when he engaged it and mine arrives next week. 3) When the car is set to walk-away lock, and you walk away with the key, it will exit the warmup mode. Otherwise, if you stay in/near the car, it will remain that way (keeping it hot) until you set it to another mode like Chill or Sport. 4) based on what I saw, a bit more than 3% per 1/4 mile pass in the Plaid.
Out of interest: Why the need of an parachute above 150mp/h ? That aren’t really high speeds at all. Is the rollout on drags trips to short ? Thank You
@@xACExSHARKx typically drag cars forgo front tyre width and therefore braking performance for reduced drag and rolling resistance. so its dicey sometimes to try and pull that up in time required without assistance.
It’s most likely in case the brakes fail … On ICE cars, a handbrake yanked would simply melt at 150+ if the actual front brakes gave up. Or it would work and make things much worse 🥴😒🤔
Wondering if the track said anything to the Plaid driver about needing a competition license and about a top cage? I know this will vary from track to track but owners should be prepared when this happens.
Actually, when I first approached the Plaid driver, he was getting a lecture from the track manager… (I had to wait until he was done to be able to talk to him about racing together)
But how about orders from September and January? Then orders from February get filled? It’s like when you are at Starbucks and the five people in line behind you get their lattes first. (Fun fact: I’ve never drank a cup of coffee in my life.)
Yep! Absolutely approaching the limits for legitimate *street tires* that have other decent properties (ride quality, noise, battery range, etc). I’m always open to track day tires, so a bit more power that can be switched on/off is still worthwhile.
I’m glad he went and charged up to see its full potential on his first outing. Wouldn’t want him to leave disappointed with a 9 friggin’ 7 quarter mile hahaha. These things are fassst.

The Plaid is now significantly better than the Raven, as seen in testing by Randy Pobst at Laguna Seca. Watch it pass Porsches as if they were standing still! Link follows:
Seeing the reminder of state of battery charge and so on makes me realize just how obsolete the car is which is so insane given how good it is! And yet...I guess it's cause all Tesla's look so similar, lol. Once one is better than the other that's that. Just so amazing that state of charge doesn't seem to matter as much with the new one and just how much insanely faster it is! These are cool but they have been deregulated (edit: wait, maybe that's not the word I'm looking for? delegated?) entirely into grocery getters...which is just insane...just simple 10 second grocery getters... Seriously though it makes you look like you're not even stepping on the gas! It's like a rocket, makes your car look slower than a Miata verses a Ferrari. It just freakin goes! I mean that's a freakin train wide gap even after giving you the move! And by the way, Drag Times just posted a video where they were running 9.2's almost the whole time!
As explained in the last two videos here on the channel, they worked fine for 950 drag strip passes. There was a TSB that affected many similar cars built that year, and both half shafts were replaced last week with no questions asked 👍
My Raven has 25,000 miles on it and they already changed them twice at no cost and the new set is starting to be noisy again when cold and i had never put it to the drag strip. They probably introduced the Cheta Mode to help to save them. Can't wait to see your videos with the Plaid.
The Plaid Plus was supposed to be faster and be released late next year. I had that in order since September, but then added an order for the Plaid in January. (Both in first minutes when ordering opened.) Tesla canceled the Plus recently and automatically converted all orders to the regular Plaid. (So that’s how I got two orders.)
I’m expecting to run many of my races at the 1/8 mile track. I prefer “only” 120MPH per race, as doing 150 about 500 times per year seems like tempting fate…
You can definitely feel the weight. I was on the brakes fairly hard and had to use the last turnoff. I also have a Mustang that runs 147 and it's pretty much the same. Makes sense that a chute is required for 150+ trap speeds.
Pure curiosity what is the need of the racing gloves at the beginning of the video? Seems to me you can pull repeated times in tesla one handed and no gloves if you wanted to 😂
Fire safety. I voluntarily wear a fire suit from shoes to my helmet. At my ET only a jacket is required. If something goes wrong (in the other lane), I want to be protected until I can get out. (I have a glass hammer alongside me too.) Too many stories like this: www.businessinsider.com/florida-man-dies-after-his-tesla-model-s-crashed-caught-fire-2019-2

And if he ordered the new Long Range instead, it would be slower than a Raven with Ludicrous, and he’d also still be waiting for it.
The Plaid S is a beast! One can’t only wonder and wait on the new Roadster times, OMG! When Tesla Insane, Luducris , Performance and Raven can only be beaten.. by a faster Tesla..
4-wheel (2 axle) dynos are far less common than standard ones. There’s no way to shut off the Tesla’s power to one axle to dyno just one end at a time. So I’d say it’s unlikely. But I will race it 500-1000 times here on the channel in the first year!
Plaid is stupid fast compared to almost anything. Just imagine what the Plaid Plus would have been like! I have a feeling the Plus mode will somehow be launched in a software update for sale but we will see.
That’s a definite “maybe”. Although it really appeals to me, I need to make sure it “fits” with my 6’4” height. And also I’m not sure whether it will have the same price/performance ratio of the Plaid S and X. (I do have a Plaid X on order, because a 9-second SUV is even more nuts than a sedan!)
We raced these two cars again tonight into a big headwind. The variables are real: Wind, temperature, track prep, DA, humidity, tire pressure, etc, etc, etc
Yeah as the person above me said, theres been videos of plaid running over 150, I think (as he said) 152 was the fastest I’ve seen. They literally told him to slow down cause he was too fast 😂
Actually, the finish line margin is not the difference in the ETs, since ETs don’t include Reaction Times. The finish line margin is on the bottom edge of the timeslip, also shown at 7:20, and says: “Left 1st .9393”
Disclaimer: I’m a computer engineer, not electrical. My understanding is the with a full charge, each individual battery can discharge at its highest discharge rate for the full duration (in this case, the 1/4 mile). It seems to be all about how fast and how many kWh it can discharge during the pass. Higher temperature also helps as it lowers the impedance. In my testing (974 passes at this moment), it slows down roughly a tenth of a second as it drops from 90% down to 80%.
I believe they no longer call the launch mode “Cheetah” in the Plaid as they do in my Raven. But it’s the exact same pedal sequence, and the front end also drops for it’s launch mode, as visible in the video.
Update: See the video I just posted last hour. I've zoomed the GoPro footage so we can clearly see the front end drop fully (over the front tires even!) on 3 of our 4 races together. (He didn't try it on our first pass.)
I have a simple question about the rectangular steering yolk. When I drive long distances, I can rest my forearm and elbow in my lap and hold the bottom of a steering wheel with my hand, which allows a relaxed position. Can you do that with the yolk that is several inches above where a wheel might be?
Ask me again in two weeks. This was 'his' Plaid, and mine is being delivered at the end of next week. (I still haven't driven one yet; I'm driving the 2019 'Raven' in this video.)

Ave. 60-ft of the Plaid’s *4* runs: 1.60

Launch control used:
Plaid: 2/4 (50%)
Raven: 0/8 (0%)
Heated up the battery:
Plaid: 3/3 (100%)

The Raven has done 1.49 at least twice before, and launch control clearly helps.
(Gearing and related lever-arm equations apply here for the application of torque.)
All things being equal, with over 200 more horsepower and 50mm more tire width, don’t you think the Plaid’s best (1.48) should be significantly better than the Raven’s ? (1.49)
When my Plaid arrives, I WILL make over 500 passes per year, but I WON’T use launch control nor will I heat up the battery. Will my 60-foots be faster or slower than the Raven based on everything we’ve seen? You decide.
OR, you can believe whatever you hear from somewhere else (other “experts” who tested differently). It’s thankfully a free country!
Your last sentence 😂😂 it's about driver mod. Put you behind the Plaid you are cutting 1.3x atleast
Tyre size
@@alanrickett2537 Yep, that’s a key factor too! For two distinct reasons:
1) Less unsprung weight.
Those Plaids are fast. Just saw Brooks run several 9.2xx at 15x mph. Wow crazy fast.
The phase amps are being fed in more slowly to protect the half shafts and especially the aluminum rear subframe (which is an absolute work of art).
What does this mean? Excuse my lack of technical car lingo!

Thanks again Andrew for the races and the tips/advice for this Tesla newbie. Look forward to you getting yours and making some runs.
Thanks Rusty! Let’s do it again soon!
⚡️🚙💨
were you happy after the later runs? seems a little disappointed after the first :) some people are running 9.2's on the street. so its fast everywhere by the looks of things.
Incredible! That Plaid is amazing, can’t wait to see more runs with yours

Would you see any reason to upgrade to a plaid from a performance if I dont drag race? Looks like you can keep up with pretty good - well to like 50/60mph then of course it goes to town. But on a Public street - all of the power is useless in my opinion. I never race on the street.
Not in Germany.. but in the U.S useless for sure.. 😄

@@UTVH21 that’s what a coworker just told me!! In Germany - yes. In a US city it’s not worth it.
I agree. it looks like their 0-60 is about the same
Cool! Some questions:
@@TeslaPlaidChannel thank you!

Yep! Absolutely approaching the limits for legitimate *street tires* that have other decent properties (ride quality, noise, battery range, etc).
I’m always open to track day tires, so a bit more power that can be switched on/off is still worthwhile.
Plaid is fast, but it's crazy to think how much faster Nevera is. But with 2million price tag, it probably should be.

No problems with your front drive shafts with all those passes ?
As explained in the last two videos here on the channel, they worked fine for 950 drag strip passes.
There was a TSB that affected many similar cars built that year, and both half shafts were replaced last week with no questions asked 👍
My Raven has 25,000 miles on it and they already changed them twice at no cost and the new set is starting to be noisy again when cold and i had never put it to the drag strip. They probably introduced the Cheta Mode to help to save them. Can't wait to see your videos with the Plaid.
Did I hear that correctly? you have two plaid orders?!?! INSANE!
That car is crazy-fast, I wonder how it feels braking such a heavy car from 150mph at the end of the track. Ouch!
@@TeslaPlaidChannel I had a laugh at "only 120".

4-wheel (2 axle) dynos are far less common than standard ones. There’s no way to shut off the Tesla’s power to one axle to dyno just one end at a time.

Explain why a fuller charge would make a difference. Just ask'in.
In my testing (974 passes at this moment), it slows down roughly a tenth of a second as it drops from 90% down to 80%.

that plaid model s doesent use cheetah mode
I believe they no longer call the launch mode “Cheetah” in the Plaid as they do in my Raven. But it’s the exact same pedal sequence, and the front end also drops for it’s launch mode, as visible in the video.
@@TeslaPlaidChannel idk but the nose wasnt down in any way , with cheetah stance its usually way down not lifting when it starts to run

I have a simple question about the rectangular steering yolk. When I drive long distances, I can rest my forearm and elbow in my lap and hold the bottom of a steering wheel with my hand, which allows a relaxed position.
