How do I shut off the water outake without losing suction?

Once you have suction and it's flowing out the outlet, leave the outlet open and then open your waste valve then close the outlet valve. shown here 2:48

Ok thank you I have a in ground pool and the only filter that I can backwash with is the one with the drain so this should do the trick
