This comment provides no value to anyone, but there was once a time when I had not played video games for a few months, I was home alone with a free weekend ahead of me and took a healthy portion of the ol' Super Mario Toad-head powerup, and decided to boot up Red Dead 2. I would never be able to explain or translate the level of immersion I was feeling, the entire universe shut down and all I could see, feel, and hear was the world of the game. I remember coming across the 2 sons building the house with their dad, and the conversation that unfolded before me had me in tears laughing, with my mouth wide open as to how this could possibly be happening in a video game. I got on the train that night, still in Chapter 1, and just rode in first person around the entire track, just sitting and staring in awe. Then I got off in Saint Denis, started a fight which led to a shoot out, and had one of the most heart pounding adrenaline packed moments I could ever have from a single player game against computers.
That night also taught me though that you don't need the mushrooms for that, the mushrooms just made me believe in my own imagination. We often feel that we lose our sense of childlike wonder and amazement as adults, but I don't think we actually do, I think we just beat ourselves down by telling ourselves what we are trying to believe is not real, as if that information became new to us when we crossed into adulthood... we knew it wasn't real back then when we were kids, but we believed in it anyways, we knew we were being ridiculous having battles in the sandbox with GI Joes, but we did it anyways because it was fun.
Ever since that night, when I really want to turn on that immersion, I just tell myself that I'm going to believe in this, even if it's silly, it's still fun, and I just do it. I've had the best experiences in all kinds of games like that, Skyrim, Fallout 4, Oblivion, even Far Cry games and Dying Light, the list goes on.
If you feel that you're missing that ability to immerse yourself, just find a quiet night with a lot of time and no distractions, load up RDR2 (I recommend firstperson cam but not necessary) or any immersive style RPG esque game, and tell yourself that you are going to let that old imagination just run wild tonight, no stopping it, no feeling silly, you are just going to turn off all inhibitions, even as an experiment, and then let go and be transported into a totally different world.

Love it! Immersion in games especially like fallout or dying light are awesome, but red dead 2 is simply the best. Another comment below talked about the ingame time syncing with IRL time with the rampage mod, which would be awesome.

I really like the 1st tip of walking. Taking your time and taking in the sights and sounds. Many people, regardless of if you love or hate RDR2 hate that you have to do so much horseback traveling throughout the map. I actually love it. I slow down and look at my surroundings, seeing nature and hearing the sounds like chirping birds. Being a nature lover, this game is amazing to play at a slow pace

One of the more subtle but just as immersive aspects of this game are how Rockstar designed the UI. In a sense the only traditional menu you'll come across is when you view the map. From loading up to exiting, everything is in-game: the wardrobe, opening your satchel (albeit with a slowing of time in SP), reading journal, picking up individual items in each shop, seeing your appearence change as Arthur/John react. Weapons at the gunsmith are on the table while you change it. What would be a plethora of generic menus, drop downs and boxes, are instead interactive layers on top of the seamless gameplay. I remember loving this aspect of TLOU when it first game out. Opening Joel's inventory didn't abruptly stop gameplay. It was all part of the experience. Same goes for here.

I've always been one to slowly move around in a game, looking at everything and taking it all in. It wasn't even an immersion thing in the early days (though it has become one) but rather a deep appreciation of the level of artistry and planning.
RDR, RDR2, GTA games (I even drove the speed limit and followed traffic laws a good bit), The Witcher 3, and, to a lesser extent, Skyrim -- Prime examples of worlds I simply walk in, absorbing the environment and being drawn into it. In other words, totally immersing myself in that world. As time went by, the more life began to suck, it became more about BEING that character, and even taking as much care with the character's life as my own; escaping my world and inhabiting one where I was revered (or despised), well-known, a badass -- all the things I am NOT in real life.
I have a friend that always, ALWAYS runs full tilt everywhere, never taking in the scenery in any detail. I keep telling him how much he's missing out on, but he just doesn't get why I do it the way I do.
Ya just plain can't tell some people anything. Oh, well. His loss.

Rdr2 is an experience that rewards you the slower you play it. You can notice it really, when you walk slow, each animation just feels right, the grass movement is more harmonious, you can see all the bespoke equipment on everything just be affected by physics , it’s just this harmony of physics, ambiance and animation. This game truly rewards if you play assuming everything “ has weight”. There is a reason they went all out on subtlety and nuance with this game. I’ve finally figured this game out. I played it after playing rdr1 again, and realized what they went for. This game is truly immersive, due to the slow nature. Must give it to rockstar, takes some balls to make such experimental decision on a multimillion dollar game

that's why they are the best of the best. Sure people argue GTAOnline ruined Rockstar forever but Red Dead 2 is the living proof that it's not true. I truly hope GTA 6 will be this immersive, even if it adopts a more goofy tone as gta games do.

I'm an old fart who fell in love with video games during the Video game arcade era of 1970's. Western Films and books were my favorite as a kid. I've been playing my current playthrough in Story Mode since Sept of 2021, most of that time in the Epologue. The immersion of Rdr2 is incredible and I spend a lot of time hunting, fishing, looking for loot and exploring. Rdr2 has become almost like a Therapeutic holodeck for me. There's so much to do, just letting my imagination take me away into my Old West Alternate Reality.

i've lived in the country for 2 years and i met so many older people who were into cowboy movies and cowboy fashion and horses, and i always kept thinking "damn they will never play red dead 2, but if they ever did, that would mesmerize them". Reading a comment from an old dude who actually spent the last 50 years fascinated with westerns and then actually played this game made me think some of those folk actually found out about this game. That thought made me smile, thank you.

Just a little mirror to the intro; I am not a wild west fan, never really was my thing, but regardless this game was the most immersive media I've ever experienced. Made me enjoy the western genre more, made me play through the story FIVE times.. like.. I have never ever played my favourite games more than twice in a decade, I played the story five times in 1,5 year. It's just that impressive. Hits just the right buttons. It's amazing, and it actually pushed the bar for me so high in regards of other games that I use RDR2 as a benchmark for them. I thoroughly enjoyed it. If others only enjoy it half as much then this will be their favourite game.

I feel like most of the complaints against this game were that it was too slow paced. I grew up loving Westerns and wanting to live that lifestyle, until growing up and realizing the old west is gone. I think the reason I loved this game so much, and I know many others feel the same, is I play it like an Old West simulator. My favorite gaming memory is shortly after I started playing I went on an in-game camping/hunting trip out by Strawberry. Set up a camp, went hunting and exploring on foot during the day, and would come back and craft, cook, and sleep at night. It felt very real

I’ll admit, I spend most of my time in this game racing around from one task to the next, at least in Online. But every once in a while, usually when I’m sleepy, I have these absolutely transcendental moments of immersion that just hit me out of nowhere.
Take tonight in RDO for example: I was tired from grinding both Trader and Collector, plus doing the dailies, and was ready to shut everything down for the night, when I decided at the last minute to just start tearing around MacFarlane’s Ranch on my horse for no reason. Jumping every fence I came across, constant skid stops and rearing up. I was pretending I was really there, dashing all around and doing crazy horse stunts. It felt awesome.
Then, once again for no real reason, I just took off toward the desert. It was night by then, and the bright moonlight made everything so eerie and beautiful. I alternated aimlessly sprinting around the desert at full gallop with stopping to just take everything in for long moments. I made it all the way to the outskirts of Tumbleweed, and perched myself up on that big plateau just looking out across the desert bathed in white moon-glow.
A fog had begun to roll in when I decided to go down the hill and trot around in the desert below. There were pronghorn and sheep milling about, and I watched a rattlesnake slither through the grass. Soon enough I came across that cougar that hangs out northeast of Tumbleweed at night. It didn’t notice me right away, so I had a moment to just watch it through my binoculars.
It was really beautiful, and it somehow looked so much more realistic than any other cougar I’ve seen in the game. It was three stars, and I figured it was seconds away from trying to maul me to death anyway, so I decided I’d kill it and put it in my hunting wagon for later.
I dismounted from my horse and walked a few yards toward it. The fog was getting thicker. It was like the build-up to a duel. Me versus this predator. I aimed my bolt-action and whistled for the cougar’s attention, and it promptly started charging at me. I shot it, but it didn’t die. It cried out in pain, limped away, and collapsed in the sand.
I’d wounded it. I was trying to figure out how I could possibly have missed that shot when the cougar started making these terrible pained screams. I immediately rushed to the cougar’s side and mercy-killed it. Everything was different after that. Before it had been like a fun showdown-type thing. Now it felt like the scene of a murder. I stood there over the cougar’s body and just kind of looked at it for a while. All of a sudden the fog was so thick I could hardly see the road a few feet behind me.
In a force of habit, I summoned my hunting wagon and picked up the cougar’s body. I stowed it in the wagon, then dismissed the wagon, and then I was all alone.
The fog had completely closed in. All I could think to do was stand there and wonder how even the cactuses could just disappear into the mist, like they had never been there at all.
After a solid several minutes of just looking around dumbly at nothing in particular, I turned around and started walking on foot back toward Tumbleweed. The fog began to lift a minute or two later, and slowly life returned to the surroundings. I saw pronghorn and horses on the plains, and a rider passed me on his Morgan.
I got to Tumbleweed and things pretty much went back to normal after that. I closed the game and shut down my PC, and that was that. It could have just been my drowsiness, but I swear, it felt like I stepped into another world for a little while. I hope I never run into that cougar again.

I've been playing RDR2 for 4 years and this video just reminded me what a masterpiece it truly is. Only a few select games can give you that opportunity to make you feel like you're in the game world and aren't just disconnected while watching a story unfold. This game is still so ahead of most AAA titles in that way and proves how videogame are so different than other mediums when a title gets the love it deserves during development.

I played through the whole game in first person and roamed the world for hours like that and it's a completely different experience. These tips are really good, especially the first one. I've gotten in the habit of chilling out and walking lately and it totally helps with gaming immersion. Playing multiplayer and fps games we solidify the habit of always running to cover more distance in less amount of time. It may be practical in those games but it is not only unnecessary, but also harmful to single player/rpg experiences. Don't be a "adhd gamer" and learn to soak in the beautiful details and worlds that most people overlook.

I recommend turning all hud off, including crosshair, and playing with free aim. I know it sounds crazy, it did to me when first suggested, but you get used to centering to aim and adjusting based on where bullets land. And leaving aim assist on (even though playing free aim, separate setting) helps make it all the more feasible.
Can't tell you how much of a difference it makes in immersion during firefights. Having to actually take cover, take time to aim, watch where bullets go and see their impacts, ah man. You also should probably start by practicing shooting bottles and lamps and stuff in appropriate areas. Immersive to learn how to shoot, for player and in game.
And a separate quick immersion enhancer: when you wanna check the map in game (since no hud), open up a map item from satchel, and as it opens and goes into first person to look at it, press and hold start to open in game map.

Haven’t watched the video yet, but I highly recommend anyone to try playing in first person. At first, it feels a little wonky if you’re used to third person, but once you get used to it it’s well worth it. You get a better view of what things look like around you. You get the ability to actually use your iron sights rather than using the dot on screen, which is much more immersive. Not even double revolvers, just the cattleman (or the navy in online). Sadly i only realized how awesome this is very late in the story. Might actually try a complete first person playtrough. Horse riding can be tough tho.

Once again, right off the bat, I couldn't agree with you more. I love being immersed in games, playing them as if in a movie or real life. I try to walk as much as possible. I've never liked running everywhere. That's so stupid to me. I binged watched a bunch of videos last night about open world games, and I kept hearing content creators talking about how boring open worlds are and how frustrating and time-consuming it is to get around them. I feel the exact opposite. To me, that's the beauty of these type of games.

If they could somehow incorporate base building (homesteading), maybe running a farm or something like that in the next one. Money and the economy could be more meaningful too. There's really nothing to do with it after a pretty early stage.

I agree, most of the memorable moments I have in this game is when I took it slow.
Fun tip, if you ride your horse in a relaxed manner, troddling along (just hold A) and cruise, it increases the likelihood of Arthur singing. With music turned off, nothing but the ambient sounds around you, it's great. Sometimes instead of riding the horse, I lead it instead.
But in my opinion, it's also one of the trade-offs with the game. It focused really hard on being slowpaced, that it did forego balancing those moments with the intensity of guns and fighting. The intensity only really comes by in missions, and even then they're very strictly pathed and fleeting.
If I could add to this list, I would say to fully immerse oneself - both in the quiet moments and also the heavy moments.
The wanted system is broken. You can't rob trains properly, or rob banks in free roam (which you can in RDR1). Going to jail has no consequences if you're already broke. The aim is very finicky until you spam deadeye, which becomes very slow. When you put the faster moments back into the equation, the game becomes very unbalanced, and these things stick out like a sore thumb.
Sure not everybody cares about those things, but many do. Hence why some of the most popular mods for RDR2 is for fixing these things specifically, tightening gunplay and recreating advanced ragdoll physics.
If I can add to this list:
Don't use deadeye, learn to aim without assists, take town battles as far as you can, manage your ammo, enjoy the fast moments, don't be afraid to play low honour (you can bring it back up on the last chapter very easily), if you're on console then 2/4 aim assist is the perfect balance between challange and skill, discard health tonics, only use moonshine. It's things like that which turned a 100h playtime for me into a 1500h one.

    • @angelosinski
      @angelosinski Рік тому

@@StumbIingforward im all about practice and skill, my point is the manual aiming is not well optimized, too clunky, and prone to mistakes. I playd my first playthrough fully on manual and it was nice too, BUT, there are many shooters with better customization and gameplay feel. there are games that give you the needed assist on controller without giving it away for exemple by snapping the aim. I guess the first one works with that but there could have been a compromise. they know how to do this, i guess they wanted to keep it in the same vein as the first. maybe fewer enemies, because when hell break loose It was just a deadeye fiesta

    my immersion level:
    1. I turn off the HUD, I go by the signs where that town is
    2. I don't use deadeye
    3. I only eat rabbit meat, I kill them without sight and in first person, they are fast and difficult to approach them, they also give little meat which makes it difficult to keep the cores full
    4. I put a piece of paper on my screen to cover the lower right corner and when I point at an animal the HUD does not give me information, which is immersive, only hearing the animals but not knowing where they are, for example a snake or a rabbit behind of the grass
    5. I do not modify the hunting weapons, which makes them more imprecise and difficult to hunt.
    6. To feed the camp I only take male deer, I hunt them with a bow without a scope or with a rifle but at long distances, it is very difficult to find male deer and hunt them with a bow without a scope
    7. I don't use toners
    8. I usually hunt only at night, and I turn off the brightness of my monitor to make it more difficult to see the animals.
    9. I don't brush my horse, I take him to a river, I take off his saddle and I swim with him in the water and brush him.
    10. I try to change my clothes every day
    11. Use free aim without assistance
    12. I avoid shootings since with two shots I receive I restart the game.
    13. I bought little ammunition to avoid lasting too long in a firefight and avoiding them or making ambushes.
Well, I could mention a thousand more possibilities that this game offers, which is the best game I have ever played in my life.

    • @AlexGonzalez-yo9ty
      @AlexGonzalez-yo9ty 10 днів тому

@CharlieHandle because hunting rabbits without using dead eye or telescopic sight is more difficult, plus a rabbit gives less meat than a deer and they are more difficult to hunt and faster to hide, which makes it more difficult to maintain health cores
