I know it's personal preference, and I'm *EXTREMELY* new to EDC stuff, but I've had a ridge wallet for about 2 years now, and I'm a big fan of it compared to any of the bi/tri fold leather I've previously used
I was wondering the same thing. If it didn't have fuel, why not buy Zippo spec lighting fluid, which is cheap and put some in for the video it's very cheap. That was not a good part of this video.
If you have a zippo as your lighter, it's a great way to ensure you'll always have a conversation starter at the pub, because you'll be asking everyone else for a light when your fuel has evaporated within 2 seconds of refilling it.
I bought a GoRuck GR1 in 2015. I've traveled to almost every American airport with it and use it for EDC and fitness, including "Arduous Pack Test" training (Wildland Firefighting). It is still going. It is as tough as they say.
My EDC choice as of March 2024 is: Victorinox Climber Hoto 26-in-1 screwdriver set Zippo with butane insert Olight Baton 4 Knipex Cobra micro pliers Knipex Twin Key Set of door latch needles Lockpick set 6 ft webbing loop Rotring 600 ballpoint pen Trayvax wallet (forgot which model but I’ve had it for close to 7 years) My bag is either a 5.11 Rush12 or one of my Hepco&Becker motorcycle cases and the tool kit lives in some Maxpedition pouch (forgot what model). Much of the gear I have had for years, some even going for a decade.
I'm new to this whole edc stuff. I can't imagine how someones life looks like who needs all those things you listed. Can you elaborate more why you need all your stuff? Thanks!
I was issued a signal by my company when I worked assisting US troops several years ago, it is an excellent multi-tool. I broke the pocket clip and need to order a new one, but the tool is phenomenal. Also, just wanted to point out that the Zippo typically uses lighter fluid which is similar to kerosene. It is not a butane lighter unless you buy specific butane inserts for it.
The Leatherman Signal is great for bushcraft gear. For EDC, I'd recommend a one-handed American made Leatherman like the Arc. Zippos suck. They LOOK good. Unless you are a smoker, they will be empty when you go to use them. There are inserts you can put in a zippo body to make it use other fuels. Do this, and you will have a Zippo that has fuel in it when you need it. While I like the look of the Stanley hip flask, I learned to use a Platypus instead. It's flexible (so it's impossible to visually detect, I've also had it missed in a pat down), doesn't set off metal detectors, and carries more.
The lighter fuel evaporates so quickly in a Zippo. It cracks me up when I see them in post apocalyptic movies. But I’m curious about these inserts you mentioned. That platypus thing sounds interesting too
I love these videos because they remind me of all the accessories that people can have but by any chance they don't know about a modern wallet? from brands like okley for example
Brother, how important a wallet is for our daily life, if you are looking for wallets similar to that brand or like Adidas, I can recommend the Vionentus VN400 with AirTag slot, which has really turned out very good for me hahahaha
Get a bottom seal and it helps greatly. If you like the format. If you're not attached to the format or aren't okay with topping it off now and then, there are better options if you want an emergency lighter you seldom use. Or you mostly light things like candles or grills.
@@EvanEdwards I've done a bottom seal AND put it in a sealing body. STILL doesn't fix the problem (I get a few more days, but not a month like I have with other sealing/peanut lighters). Zippo DOES make inserts that use other fuels though (the flame is like a blow torch). These DO make it last.
Had a keybar in copper. Broke 4 master keys at work because of the added torque the key bar provides when turning they key. Yes, it makes the doors easier to open but it absolutely obliterates keys if the locks are hard to turn and get hung up.
As an owner and lover of the same stanley flask in hammertone green, i highly recommend their wide-mouth flask. Much easier to fill, prevents you from carrying a flask funnel around or trying to freehand it and spill. Great video
Can agree with the GR1. My GR1 is 4 years old, and hasn’t shown any wear besides the fabric pulls on the zippers. I’ve also bought a GR3 for travel, and it’s done well
I briefly carried my keys on a similar (anodized) inline foldout key carrier which seemed like a cool, brilliant idea. Then I discovered the downside of carrying something that is ostensibly innocent and more or less harmless i.e. keys, in an outward container that looks somewhat more like a weapon i.e. a folding pocket knife. So.... by attracting attention, it got closer inspection which became more of a problem with other non-key tools or special keys that I like to carry among my keys. I went back to my keyring and problem was solved. As much as I love my trusty, old zippo (the lighter I bought at the PX in Alabama when I was in Basic), I reluctantly recognize that there are now much better, more durable, more reliable, more feature laden, less maintenance fire lighting solutions out there. Mine is titanium, absolutely waterproof, lights in all conditions, actually smaller than a Zippo, and glows in the dark. It even has a ferro rod on the lanyard as a backup.
My question exactly - Why mention Leatherman with the limited 25 year warranty when Victorinox actually has a lifetime warranty and has far better fit and finish.
Gerber has a amazing lifetime warranty.. I emailed them with 3 pictures of broken gear and they replaced them all absolutely free of charge. I'm a lifetime customer now and gladly use my Gerber daily knowing that this company has my back .
Honestly, I have to say that choosing a Zippo is rather questionable. Sure, it’s made of metal and very durable, but let's be real-maintaining the wick and fuel can be a hassle, and if it gets wet, you’re out of luck. Don’t get me wrong, Zippos are wonderful; I have a collection myself, but purely for display. For practical purposes, I wouldn’t rely on one. If I’m heading to a pub and need a light for a cigarette, I’d bring a Bic or a Clipper. They’re simply more reliable in every way.
I use a pair of Randolph Concordes every single day (bit more traditional Aviator style) in my car. I love them more than any other sunglasses I've ever owned. I actually have two pairs, I thought I lost a pair, and immediately bought another. Then I found it. Their warranty doesn't cover scratches but you can easily send stuff back and they'll fix them. Made in USA, not owned by the sunglass monopoly Luxottica, and great group to work with. I pretty much only buy Randolphs if I want a pair of serious sunglasses.
Those rubber gaskets they sell to put in the bottom of Zippo inserts are complete junk. I tried one and it became brittle, because it was soaked in lighter fluid, and it cracked after a few weeks. If you’re worried about fuel evaporation buy a butane insert for it. Vector, Zippo and Zorro all make nice ones. If you want to keep the petrol lighter get a peanut lighter like the Exotac Titanlight.

Genuine question- i've never understood what people need to use a blade for in their EDC. I don't think I've ever come across a situation where I need to use a blade for anything other than opening a package. If i'm camping/hiking then I might take a swiss knife. Same applies to a zippo for non-smokers (I would recommend being a non-smoker.. lol)
Honestly, it really depends on what your daily life looks like. If youve got a desk job or only use a blade for opening the occasional package, then obviously a blade isn't for you. For other folks, a blade can be useful. This then opens up discussion for "well, which blade do you use?" Personally, I'm a blue collar worker, I used to work in construction and landscape, and I'm usually the package opener around the house and office. I always have a blade on me, whether it's a cheapo little razor blade, a keychain Victorinox, a budget folding knife, a 200 dollar knife, a pocket fixed blade, or any combination of the above. I fully understand it's not a universal commodity, and each tool has an appropriate (and inappropriate) environment. I'll use a blade daily, whether it's for cutting my meals into bite size pieces, prepping cardboard for recycling, cutting packages, trimming loose threads, making clean cuts in paper, cutting zip ties, or anything in between. I find my blades incredibly useful, and I'll likely never stop carrying a knife of some sort. But I also recognize that it isn't a universal experience. That being said, "EDC" itself isn't universal either. It's a concept, not a literal list of tools that everyone is required to carry. Some folks don't carry a handkerchief. Some folks don't carry a lighter. Some folks don't even carry a wallet. And yet, some folks (myself included) carry all of these things. There is no right or wrong answer, as long as you stay legal, safe, and use what you carry. Hope this helps! Feel free to ask more, it's how we communicate and learn.
The Zippo is a leaky, messy, smelly and unreliable lighter. Beter to replace the inner fluid fuel workings with the refillable gas module from Zippo. Much cleaner, no leaking and most importantly more reliable.
I love Zippos but I don't carry one anymore. The fuel evaporates too fast. If you aren't a smoker who uses there zippo daily and /or filling it regularly you will probably pull it out of you pocket after a week of non use and find it empty. A disposable bic will be is a better choice for a non smoker it can be expected to fire after months of non use with no upkeep. I have tried minimalist wallets, I want to like them but they have never worked for me. mostly because they don't accommodate cash well.
Glad as I am for the fact that someone recognized Signal's Value as an EDC component giving Leatherman universal praise in the resilience department is a lot for them given what happened to Squirt. I am similarly not convinced of the resilience of Ridge wallet given what I know of elastic materials like the one holding it together. And for the record I do have other problems with the products of those companies, they just aren't relevant in context of the video.
Butane doesn't work in that type of lighter. Since it' doesn't hold pressure, it would outgas in a matter of seconds. It needs to be filled with a naphtha based lighter fluid.
The leather man, Stanley and wallet all have synthetic or plastic and he didn't even mention it...when that's exactly what he is talking about....what a joke of a video....who the hell makes a titanium wallet then adds plastic/synthetic to it?it's absolutely ridiculous
The only issue for me and the Stanley is that I wish I could get it in the standard flask look. I like to put my flask in my boot, this flask is awkward in there on the ankle but great otherwise.
I personally like my bi-fold "slimwallet" wallet better now than any just card holder-only type design. Ridge makes the sorting and searching through cards impossible and if you have embossed names, the cards will scratch and damage the magnetic strip on them like anything. The slimwallet is also thinner than buffway slim wallet and they provide a lifetime warranty for the cloth/material of the wallet. I personally love that material and wallet vibes in minimalistic looking cute colors as well.
Not sure about the Zippo in this list. The lighters themselves last forever, sure (and they look great, feel nice etc...) - but they constantly evaporate, so you always need a small bottle of lighter fluid handy. A disposable Bic lighter by comparison is completely sealed (not designed to be re-filled), so will keep going until you've actually used all the liquid - which means they tend to last years.
I don't know if the Keybar is really as nice as the Keysmart. My Keysmart is a lot slimmer and elegant looking but has last me a really long time. On the recommendation of a client from Switzerland, I bought a Ridge wallet and continue to use it a decade later. The elastic that holds it together is a little worn but shows no signs of failing. The simplicity of my Stanley cup is really nice too. There are very few moving parts. In general, I have always loved things with very few moving parts and found they last a lot longer than other more complicated items. For example, Campagnolo bicycle shifters are incredibly simple and lasted forever compared to Shimano shifters. The Shimano shifters have some interesting designs that can give a competitive advantage but for every day use, the Campagnolo shifters are king. Lights have been improving every year. I have some Surefire lights and find them okay but there are a LOT of better lights coming out of Asia and they are improving every day. I would never recommend any light as a classic. I would also recommend looking at what is available when you are looking to purchase. Even Surefire is coming out with better and better lights every year. I have numerous lights that are as good or better than my Surefire plus the brightness of lights bought recently are leaps and bounds better than older lights. My first, small light from 17 years ago was 110 lumens. Last light I purchased in 2019 was 3000 lumens. I wouldn't be surprised if today's lights are 4500+ lumens.
That elastic can be replaced, and some people have even had it covered by the warranty. Edit: Definitely agree on the heirloom part. Just pointing out that it's not as big an issue as it seems. Still annoying tho
Leatherman commonly uses 420HC blade steel for the knife in their multi tools. They also don’t heat treat it properly. I bought a Free K2, which costed me $80, and it went extremely dull after 2 days of light use. All I used it for was to cut weed eater cord. I’ll never buy another multi tool from them again after that.
The Leatherman Signal doesn't come with a deep carry pocket clip, and neither does the one you showed in the video. That's a regular clip. They sell replacement deep carry clips, but they are not stock.
can’t stand the ridge wallet. had one and it felt like a sharp brick in my back pocket. getting out cards was a pain because all the cards were pressed together and didn’t fan out easily. terrible. don’t buy it. Distil union card sleeve has served me well for years, can’t recommend it enough
@@RaidersX95 most modern wallets aren’t meant for a dedicated pocket, you should be able to use either. but yes it’s better in the front pocket for sure
@frogturtle I agree, but really, about every modern wallet is designed for the front pocket now. Having it in the back can actually lead to issues with your spine over time. That and it makes it easier to be pickpocketed
Big problem with a Zippo is longevity of use. The fuel will wick out and evaporate quickly. Not a problem if you're a smoker who uses it all the time and fills it everyday. Big problem if you just want to have around a source of fire simply when needed.
the stanley flask is not BIFL had mine for a few years and the lid retainer sheared off of the flask body. no real damage but does not function properly anymore and can’t be remounted.
Top tier stuff. Good call on the GR1! I never hear anything about that company. I have had a GR2 for the better part of 10 years. I use it for everything. Primarily for my Jiu Jitsu gear but it is tried, tested and true.
All LEDs eventually die out, the Surefire certainly is no exception. That being said, there's much better lights at that price (and cheaper) with just as good quality, but much improved features. For $100 you can get amazing durable flashlights that will last you a long time, and are superior to that one in every way.
Love most everything, but just can’t warm up to that wallet. I guess it’s an old school thing where I believe wallets are to be made from leather. And likely because I am a leather worker (hobby). Nice video!
I noticed he skipped that the leather man has now got what looks like plastic? This is exactly what he is talking about..a tool that use to be made of all metal..now has plastic incorporated into its design...what a joke?
Zippo's don't hold fluid for very long, it evaporates faster than you can say ouch that burns! They should have made it leak and evaporation proof like that Stanley Flask!
Over consumerism (Mostly fashion and electronics) is a major contributor to Environmental destruction and Climate change. Buying thing that last and are DIY reparable and upgradable is the best choice. You don't need the latest and greatest EDC as long as what you buy still works or is upgradable
Zorro>Zippo. If you fill zippo with fluid, it will be empty in less than 2 weeks. Zorro lighters are high end Chinese knockoff of a Zippo. Very well made and build with gaskets so that it never leaks fluid.
@@BrettBrett1299 The Vargo titanium flask looks interesting. Stanley also have a 'lifted spirits hip flask' that looks better than this one, their website is fairly vague though.
This list might as well encourage you to throw your money into a fireplace. A $50 victorinox, $20 flashlight, $1.00 bic lighter, and your school backpack can replace this entire list of “EDC Essentials” for a fraction of the price. None of these outrageously priced products will last you a lifetime, lol your zippo doesn’t work in the video. Even leatherman has fallen from grace. Go online and look at their warranty… 25 years isn’t a lifetime and the second you take apart your tool to maintenance it, you’ve voided the entire warranty. I remember my grandfather used to take his craftsman tools back to Sears and get a brand new one regardless of how messed up or old they were. The best thing is he didn’t have to dig around for a 20 year old receipt, pre register the tool, or show his ID. Back then they trusted their own workmanship and replaced anything without questions.
Stanley is huge for water. I usually know where no place in the middle of nowhere between 12 to 14 hours at a time maybe longer that looks like a good pic. Is it bigger than it gulp at 7-Eleven let me know good day.
The Stanley flask plastic lid is garbage and becomes really hard do use after the first time you screw it on wrong as it deforms real easy its the only weak point, I hope they fix it. For now, the Zippo 3 f.oz is a way better option, even if you'll use better quality alcohol to compensate for the loss in volume.
Can somebody give me a fair assessment of the Ridge Wallet? To me, the handling looks cumbersome; you need to fumble around to get the one card out, you need to pay with, and then awkwardly pry it open to put it back in.
I have some overlap with this choice set up…the only difference being the brand-or a homemade minimalist wallet, etc… Thnx 🔥 I have, for example, a bladeless rebar; a crafted skeletonized equally sized fixed blade; a small one battery torch light… it’s same same all the way to the lighter. I had a zippo leak lighter fluid on me once (ouch)-fool me once… Now I carry a bic, and a backup fire rod as a pendant. I also have one useless thing, that stems from tradition…my marlin spike. It’s more than necessary but I can’t seem to retire it…yet.
Bought that leather man when it first came out years ago, and still have it. However the yellow plastic parts fell off after carrying it daily for three weeks! Its in a drawer somewhere.
Why even bother with zippo when even the cheapest amazon teir peanut lighter has better fuel retention? If I want fire during an emergency I dont want to have to carry fuel to guarantee flame.
The ridge has to be the most overpriced and over hyped wallet. I stopped using mine a long time ago and got a Akeeni Xsto. Far more practical.

I have tried minimalist wallets, I want to like them but they have never worked for me. mostly because they don't accommodate cash well.
hence why carrying this shit every day is stupid
The Signal saw is the best saw. It is better than all Victorinox saws.
leatherman saws are better and victorinox scissors are better
Just put a butane insert in.
when i saw the stanley flask i knew this would be a respectable video.
+1 for Keybar, I love my titanium one!
Tactile turn is epic despite its high price point. I just throw in a Pilot G2 and carry it in my bag everyday.
Thanks for the pricing in the description, saves a lot of time!
I think a great alternative to the ridge is the Groove wallet
Elastic on the ridge has to be prone to stretching and breaking eventually. Can't imagine it as an heirloom
That elastic can be replaced, and some people have even had it covered by the warranty.
Edit: Definitely agree on the heirloom part. Just pointing out that it's not as big an issue as it seems. Still annoying tho
just wanna say that the version of the zippo shown is not butane but liquid fuel , butane is in a pressurised container
Great info on durable EDC gear! The Giantmouse looks to be a solid compact blade. -Alex @ Vanquest
Victorinox Swiss Tool and Spirit models are much higher quality than Leatherman tools and Victorinox tools have a lifetime warranty.
The leather man and the Stanley flask both have plastic parts ...this is exactly what he is talking about ,and didn't even mention it?
The Leatherman Signal doesn't come with a deep carry pocket clip, and neither does the one you showed in the video. That's a regular clip. They sell replacement deep carry clips, but they are not stock.
can’t stand the ridge wallet. had one and it felt like a sharp brick in my back pocket. getting out cards was a pain because all the cards were pressed together and didn’t fan out easily. terrible. don’t buy it.
Distil union card sleeve has served me well for years, can’t recommend it enough
Lol it's meant for front pocket
@@RaidersX95 most modern wallets aren’t meant for a dedicated pocket, you should be able to use either. but yes it’s better in the front pocket for sure
@frogturtle I agree, but really, about every modern wallet is designed for the front pocket now. Having it in the back can actually lead to issues with your spine over time. That and it makes it easier to be pickpocketed
They're a gimmick.
7:27 Do people carry "8 ounces of your favorite spirit" every day? Weird 🤣
9:30 The ridge did not usher in the age of minimalist card holders/wallets.
Secrid did it in 2007. And Grip6 made the best wallet ever
I'll say grip6 hasn't made the best wallet in the world, but they've definitely made the best daily belts
7:32 Rhinokey and Carbocage Keycage are 2 other good options for keyholders.
My first edc item is the TB12 book, second is a baguette 🥖
That’s some great stuff right there
All LEDs eventually die out, the Surefire certainly is no exception.
That being said, there's much better lights at that price (and cheaper) with just as good quality, but much improved features. For $100 you can get amazing durable flashlights that will last you a long time, and are superior to that one in every way.
¿¿¿ why the VICTORINOX SWISS ARMY knife isn t in this top ???
Key bar is cool, but I struggle to see it as practical for anyone who drives, considering they’d have to carry their car key separately
I'll never understand the obsession with the ridge wallets, I prefer the trayvax contour hands down.
Did you just call the Zippo (that has clearly a wick) a butane lighter?
Zorro>Zippo. If you fill zippo with fluid, it will be empty in less than 2 weeks. Zorro lighters are high end Chinese knockoff of a Zippo. Very well made and build with gaskets so that it never leaks fluid.
5:59 The plastic on the Stanley flask immediately turns it into crap.
Unfortunately I had the same experience. I was pretty let down.. still looking for a “lasts a lifetime” flask..
@@BrettBrett1299 The Vargo titanium flask looks interesting. Stanley also have a 'lifted spirits hip flask' that looks better than this one, their website is fairly vague though.
hey the zippo were cool where did you buy or get zippo from
Walmart, some gas stations will sell them on display. They're not hard to find.
"Now that the latest iPhone 15 as brought to light what the EDC community has known for decades" Android users can relate heavily
Zippo i useless. For a lighter I use the UCO Gear Stormproof Lighter. It is amazing. Doesn't leak. Always ready for work.
Factory Zippo’s use lighter fluid not butane tho a butane insert is available for extra cash$$$
zippo is so cool and durable you couldn't even spend 5 buck on a tin of fuel
5:07 “And then bam! A flame!” 😂
it's smart of you to not show your actual keys with the key bar. it's trivial to copy the bitting and now someone has a copy of your house key.
The fuel is not butane
The Stanley flask plastic lid is garbage and becomes really hard do use after the first time you screw it on wrong as it deforms real easy its the only weak point, I hope they fix it. For now, the Zippo 3 f.oz is a way better option, even if you'll use better quality alcohol to compensate for the loss in volume.
Can somebody give me a fair assessment of the Ridge Wallet? To me, the handling looks cumbersome; you need to fumble around to get the one card out, you need to pay with, and then awkwardly pry it open to put it back in.
I have some overlap with this choice set up…the only difference being the brand-or a homemade minimalist wallet, etc…
Thnx 🔥
I have, for example, a bladeless rebar; a crafted skeletonized equally sized fixed blade; a small one battery torch light… it’s same same all the way to the lighter.
I had a zippo leak lighter fluid on me once (ouch)-fool me once…
Now I carry a bic, and a backup fire rod as a pendant.
I also have one useless thing, that stems from tradition…my marlin spike. It’s more than necessary but I can’t seem to retire it…yet.
They might be built to last a lifetime, but I'll still probably end up buying more of a similar product. I need help..
Supertool 300 to start with
Used to buy the Randolph E. glasses at army surplus stores for $29.99 .... Now $299... What a fist f*ck..🤬
Bought that leather man when it first came out years ago, and still have it. However the yellow plastic parts fell off after carrying it daily for three weeks! Its in a drawer somewhere.
Who here wanted to see him actually light up the zippo? 🙋🏻♂️ 5:39
thank you for this video :)
Ridge Wallet is unparalleled. Ill never go back to old leather wallets
I just bought the the fantom x. Makes the ridge look like a scam 😒
"built to last a lifetime"...with a plastic hinge 🤣😂🤣
A small knife is cool but $140? You can keep it
Well done
Why even bother with zippo when even the cheapest amazon teir peanut lighter has better fuel retention? If I want fire during an emergency I dont want to have to carry fuel to guarantee flame.
Most of thesd are overpriced with highmarketing costs with much cheaper equivalents that are of equal quality. Especially the Ridge and Leatherman.
Zippo doesn’t use butane
I think he showcased the wrong item, there's a zippo butane replacement
Zippo does make a butane lighter
A bic is much more reliable than a zippo
Don't like the ideas? If you don't know how to adapt you will not survive
I'm sure they're nice and durable, but "engineered to military specifications" does not give me any extra confidence 🤣
I’d probably swap the flask for a metal water bottle. Haha.
