ABOUT THE GAME
The Emperor's New Groove is the name of two video games based on the 2000 Disney film of the same name, one developed by Argonaut Games for the PlayStation and Microsoft Windows, and the other by Sandbox Studios for the Game Boy Color.
The Emperor's New Groove is a platformer in which the player controls Kuzco from a third-person perspective, progressing through a linear succession of levels based on locations from the film. The primary goal of the game is to get to the end of each level without losing all health.
Throughout the levels are placed a number of coins. Collecting all coins in a level rewards the player with a large gold coin and is necessary for 100% completion. To achieve this, the player is usually required to defeat enemies and uncover secrets within each level. Some levels involve Kuzco drinking magic elixirs, turning him into a frog, a turtle, or a rabbit, each with specific abilities needed to complete the level.
The game loosely follows the plot of the film, from which it also includes a number of video clips. Emperor Kuzco has been transformed into a llama by his evil advisor Yzma, who has subsequently taken over his throne. Kuzco befriends the peasant Pacha, and together they seek to confront Yzma and obtain an elixir that will return Kuzco to his human form.
Argonaut Games founder Jez San noted that the game's development team tried to keep the game's plot and setting close to that of the film while also "exaggerating some elements of the movie that would make great game scenarios", specifically pointing to the scene in the film with the roller coaster leading to Yzma's labaratory, which played a minor role in the movie but was made into a much larger aspect of the game.
The PlayStation and PC versions of The Emperor's New Groove were developed using the same game engine as Croc 2, following Argonaut's common strategy of reusing game engines and development tools from their previously created games. Argonaut developed The Emperor's New Groove at the same time as Disney's Aladdin in Nasira's Revenge, another 3D platformer also built from the Croc 2 engine. The Emperor's New Groove shares many graphical and gameplay similarities to Nasira's Revenge as a result of this.
24:32 - "...even by the end of the film" - I meant 'game'. It gets confusing saying both 'film' and 'game' multiple times in one paragraph!
Lol!
Which emulator are you using?
I feel emperor's new groove is what I used to watch as a kid
Actually, at the beginning of the Jungle level, we see the clip where Kuzco first meets Bucky and is being rather rude towards him. So instead of helping him, it seems more like he's leading Kuzco into a trap for payback. Especially with that falling log bit.
Ahhh my bad, I skipped most of them as I'd seen the film! Then realized I didn't know which were used where so I had to look up someone else's long-play. 😂
YOU THREW OFF MY GROOVE
gaurd: excuse me but you did through off the emporers groove *throws you out da window*
Sooooooooooorryyyyyyyyyyyy!
Seems like a lot of movies got PS1 games
You NEED to the play Bugs Bunny: Lost in time and Bugs Bunny & Taz: time busters. Oh my god i loved those games!
Lost in Time was my jam, every weekend my dad rented it for me! Though I always got stuck on the Martian section with the brain teaser. 😂
@@ToridoriGaming Amazing! You might not like how it has aged though, but it is still fun
Agreed
I always struggled to outrun those damn Jaguars in the Jungle without getting caught every time , it took me SO many attempts to make it to safety ! 😤
My hand hurts so much!
3:53 That transition made me realize that Kronk has been staring at me with great concern this entire video.
He's judging my piss poor gaming skills. 😭
I played this game over and over again as a kid. The rollercoaster levels were my favorite because they were so challenging
I was so bad at them, you have more skill than me!
I love this game as well. Except for the catacombs levels. SOOOOOO HARD!!!
I thought I was just crap at that section because I saw other people say "Hurr durr that bit was easy" on other videos, so glad it wasn't just me that struggled... 😂
Haven’t watched one of your reviews without laughing and smiling. Thanks :) xD
Aww thank you Chris!
Same ✌🏻
That cocking squirrel was simply leading you into a false sense of security before betraying you. :p
Shot through the heart and Bucky's to blame... :(
Happy to see someone talking about this game! It was my favorite as a kid and I still love it as an adult ❤️
My thumb still hurts when I think back to the panther chase 😁
@@ToridoriGaming I still dread that level 😂
@@MLESoup She's better Kim Justice than the actual Kim Justice lol.
I really enjoyed this one in particular Tori! Partially bc of my prior familiarity with the material but also because your editing in this video was GREAT! I laughed so much & loved seeing your gorgeous face! I’m glad this one was more enjoyable for you than the games you have been playing. Keep it up girly! 💜
Thank you Ayame! I'm really happy to do a review for a game that's known and loved for once, it's nice to hear so many people played this as kids. :D
YAY another review! This makes for a nice birthday present :D
HAPPY BIRTHDAY SPIKKLE! \o/
glad you had fun on this. I LOVE this movie as well
Aha, aha aha aha! :D
I can tell this game took a lot of inspiration from the Spyro series
Like when you turn into a rabbit that reminds me of Sheila the kangaroo
And krunk's challenges remind me a lot of Hunter's
"Oh yeah, it's all coming together." 😁
Funny how this game was released just a month or so after "Spyro 3".
I found this channel by searching for a muppets game. Then i decided to search a review for the emperor’s new groove ps1. And im glad i found this channel
Thank you Mewkoa Mew 😊
That Spyro 2 Agent Zero part had me dying lol. I loved this game growing up. Still have it, might play it again soon just to see how good it is. Great videos as always btw
Thank you Darren, now... you better not be sneaking behind me. ;)
This is awesome! I really enjoy these reviews of games from my childhood.
Thank you The Nemeton! :)
Me and my brother played this game when we were kids, but we never got past the first level, got bored, and went to play another game. This happened every time we boot it up back then and just stopped playing it all together.
Aww that's a shame, but to each their own 😀
I remember this game! I had alot of fun with it but I admit its not perfect.a wonderful review by the way *applauds*
*also has flashbacks of kid saying a rock cant stop his new bike*
That lil shit got on my nerves 😂😂😂
I'm glad someone finds this game as enjoyable as I remember it being! I really loved this when I found it as a kid, was sad I couldn't keep it because it was a rental. Totally forgot it existed until a few years ago, somehow!
Emulate it and experience your childhood again! :D
✨✨ 2:33 - I did not registrer it then, but the design and movement of the bird, is just like the Puffskeins from the 2 first Harry Potter games!✨✨ - Love your videos, been waiting for this one. Love you.
My bloody job nearly made me miss this one! Thankfully, I’ve got *NOTIFICATIONS*
You mean... the notifications actually worked for once!?
Ah, yes.
My favorite Disney Princess.
*Kronk*
Kronk - Oh yeah, it's all coming together.
Kronk - spinach puffs
This channel exists now just to remind me of the PS1 games i forgot about, my cousin had this and he never watched the movie I improved his quality of life by making him watch it due to this game :D
You are a good cousin!
12:26 Actually Yzma's transformation potions never last longer than one day (or one 11 minute episode) so everything Kuzco went through in the film was pretty much useless.
This game has given me a new groove.
Time to think of a pun...
Any luck? :D
Uhhh....this game is....groovy...
Man, I played this so much as a kid! I think I even have more memories with the game than the movie!
You brought up some good points which made me want to re-visit this at one point and the jokes still hilarious! The report part with Patcha had me on the floor!
Great job as always, Tori!
Aw, no mention of the amazing soundtrack? It's one of the games biggest strong points. I find myself humming the Follow Pacha and Catacombs themes constantly. xD
It's a good soundtrack indeed, I tend not to mention music in my reviews though as I'm not very good at describing it. Other than "it gud". 😂
I REMEMBER PLAYING THIS GAME WHEN I WAS A YOUNG CHILD
I had difficulty getting through the first level alone...
You are excused, you were young. 😂
The Emperors New Groove is probably my favorite Disney movie, I remember watching it so many times growing up, I watched it again a couple months ago to see if it was as good as I remembered, I watched it again a couple weeks ago because it was that good. Another good movie nobody talks about is Brave
The Emperor's New Groove, Kronk's New Groove and The Emperor's New School are very well hidden but still my favorite movies & TV show. I love Emperor's New Groove, it's sequel and spin-off TV show. Yeah the TV show me I've been in a little bit cheesy from time to time, but it was still a good TV show based on a movie.
Disney did have some good spin off TV shows of their movies.
I've never watched New School but it looks fun! :D
@@ToridoriGaming basically in the show, Kuzco still learns a lot of lessons with it in the show just like how he did in the movie. But the whole premise of it is that, he needs to go back to school to get a high school education while living at Panchos. It's still Kuzco doing Kuzco stuff like, the 4th wall breaks, stopping the show to explain what's happening, and a lot of yzma trying to get rid of Kuzco. And in the show, crunk is kuzco's friend.
Long story short, it was a good TV show I do recommend.
Huh, I remember the roller coasters from hell when I was a kid, but I seemed to have forgotten about the block family. Was probably for the best I had forgotten it for all these years...
And that ghost.... *shudders* I think it's supposed to have an Yzma face but it's terrifying for some reason. D:
My best guess for the audio bug is the PS1 thinks the file is longer/ shorter than it actually is, so it replaces the audio with static nonsense. Just a theory.
A game theory... ;)
Love your review! :)
Thank you! :D
Today I watched The Emperors New Groove, the roller coaster I the movie is grey, but in the game it's cool looking and colorful. And there's also a Wizard of Oz reference towards the end of the movie, when Pacha and Cuzco get to the temple, on the shelf of potions they read "lions, tigers, bears" and then Isma and Kronk show up and she says "Oh my". They said it at a speed that was just like in The Wizard of Oz.
I think this is the movie that got me interested in ancient people
The game was pretty fun. The film was as good :) Great review as always, Tori!! Loving this style of mixing face-cam and gameplay, along with film clips. Makes it more enjoyable to watch!! Almost like a podcast or TV show now. Keep it up.
Cheers my dude! I'm really enjoying making them with face cam. :D
@@ToridoriGaming It was a great idea because it makes the video engaging and adds your personal touch to it :D
@@ToridoriGaming Hey, and I just gave you a Shout out because I enjoy your videos a lot and I think more people need to know about your channel- ua-cam.com/video/A2i_yhNG79g/v-deo.html Keep it up, Tori !!
Damn. Nice to see you review a game i've actually played. I really enjoyed this game. I think i finished it on my PC like, 10+ years ago? I do agree that rollercoaster sections were HARD AS SHIT, and i had no precious savestates to help me either. I also feel the game went a bit too long, but it was a very memorable experience and finishing it so young just made me feel good.
I just cannot understand why they stuck checkpoints every three seconds elsewhere (including the stealth section in the jungle) but didn't put any in the hardest parts of the game! At least the panther chase only took about a minute, but these rollercoaster sections feel like they go on forever. :/
Love the Colossus audioswap!
Yes I really like that movie but I didn't know that they had a video game out for that
This is the only Disney game, I ever purchased and played. It was fun to play, can’t recall if I ever reached the ending (which I highly doubt)
It's fairly well made, though I still hate the cart challenge in the lab.. :I
I loved this game as a kid I still have it now
Another masterpiece, Tori is the picasso of youtube
I make wonky and anatomically incorrect videos? 😱
@@ToridoriGaming YES and it art 👍👍😂😂😂
Hey Toridori, I've been meaning to ask. Have you ever played Mini Ninjas. I played the game growing up and I felt it was really awesome. If you haven't I'm not making a suggestion (unless you want to, I mean it's your channel), I'm just curious.
I've never even heard of it let alone played it, but I can add it to my list. What's it about? Besides ninjas! 😂
@@ToridoriGaming A young ninja named Hiro leaves his home on Ninja Mountain to fight an army of samurai. Overtime he learns about magic, rescues other young ninja sent before him and explores the vast words around him. The game should still be around online and for a cheap price. If you want a visual, check out the trailer.
ua-cam.com/video/ML5zveZ3ARo/v-deo.html
Sounds intriguing, I'll put it on my list. :)
Why is his rabbit transformation red in the game but yellow in the show
From fun gaming channel to review fun gaming channel ^^
:D
I loved the catacombs parts. My brother could never beat it.
With all the memes, can we start a petition to get this game an HD remaster?
Kronk: err....you watching this tori video too?
Yzma: She called me a WHAT!?
This appears to be a rare thing.
Movie tie in game that’s pretty damn swell.
Aye, most are fairly diabolical!
I didn't like the follow pacha level. I used to just stay in the llama pen until pacha got really far away. Then I'd move and he "sees" me from like miles away. I'd still hear him go "huh?" as if he was only a few feet away
I'm telling ya, wall hacks! Pacha is a cheat... :I
I actually loved the coaster levels as a kid 😅
I don't make deals with pez.
That's it. He doesn't make deals with small pieces of candy.
The Emperor's New Groove is probably my favorite Disney film, watched it so many times over the years and I feel it's one that people don't bring up that much anymore. That being said the game looks like a decent platformer so maybe I'll have to check it out at some point.
It's not bad, only takes 5-6 hours or so. And yesss, nobody talks about TENG anymore... :'(
@@ToridoriGaming Or the cartoon, The Emperor's New School
Good stuff! Surprising that it actually a semi-decent game considering how the reputation of the licenced video game has gone over the years.
Where can I get this today?? I lost it when I moved as a kid
I heard "I don't think you'll detect me" not "I don't make deal with peasants" it's like ghost hunters listening to a fucking radio.
This must a Laurel/Yannie thing. 😂
@@ToridoriGaming No one ever heard 'Yannie'! They're all fucking liars. Lol.
I heard Yannie! >.>
@@ToridoriGaming LIES! All lies!!! Lol
I was so surprised by the affection poured into this game.
I went so far as to downgrading an old Windows 7 laptop to XP just to keep playing it since the PC version has issues with virtual machines.
This defentfently gave me my grove
BOOM BABY
I'm attempting to beat sonic 3 and knuckles and I've gotten like 2-3 game overs on just the second level
I believe in you, you can do eeeet!
Who do you think is shittier Kuzco? PS1 Kuzco or "Emperor's New School" Kuzco?
I have not seen Emperor's New School so it's hard to judge! Is he awful in that too? :O
@@ToridoriGaming He's way worse in that show then he'll ever be in this game.
@@ToridoriGaming Also I would like to note that today, "The Emperor's New Groove" is officially 20 years old.
Your accent is adorable
Thanks :D
Wait you get to ride the rollercoaster to Yzma’s lair?!
Let me at it🤩
It's so hard to control but if it was a ride at Disney World I'd be on that in a flash. 😂
Why not play the PC version of the game instead of emulating?
Unsurprisingly, I have a great love for the movie, and the game is one of my more fondly remembered PS1 games I played before finding my one true gaming love in the PS2.
Except for the the button mashing mini games, which I always cheesed by using a turbo controller, and the, and please excuse my language, the-
FUCKING!!
-roller coaster mini game at the end that prevented me from actually beating the game.
Oooh have you never finished it then? Quick, while we have save states at our disposal!
yay Cusco's my favorite Disney princess ;p
YESSSS! Magic hair, talks to animals, was poisoned, a big strong man showed up and solved all his problems... xD
No wonder no one liked the Disney movie tie-in games much they spend far to much time ripping off actual games worth playing like Crash, Spyro and Banjo Kazooie though I don’t think it was a good idea for Emperor’s New Groove to reference the annoying race mini game that would later be featured in one of the most annoying challenges in Banjo Tooie.
Still great review as always Tori and its great to see your actual reactions to certain moments in the game sorry I haven’t been keeping up with your reviews as much lately Tori I’ve been super busy with Crash Team Racing Nitro Fueled in amongst other games but I’m glad I caught this video
Hey James, no worries about not keeping up with the videos - they're on here forever for you to enjoy whenever! I appreciate it greatly when you make time to watch them! How is Nitro Fueled? :D
Toridori it’s still a lot of fun to play especially since Spyro joined recently along with Hunter and surprisingly Gnasty Gnorc also I’ll definitely go back and watch your videos I have missed soon I really enjoy them especially when I’m doing any kind of grinding and need something to watch plus it helps you still have your amazing sense of humor too
I was really disappointed that Gnasty didn't have a tiny car to drive around in. 😂
Toridori he ended up with an actual good car instead
A game that you should play that inspired Disney that is really really good is, Toy Story 2 Buzz Lightyear to the rescue. It's an overall good game. I've beaten the game so many times and had so much fun with the game that I can barely find any gripes of the game. Not saying that the game doesn't have anything that's bad, but it's so fun to play that you forget that the game has anything wrong with it. Yes it can be bad at certain points, and yes it can be hard at those points as well, but it's a game that you should really check out
I keep meaning to play it, I just have so many to get through ya know? 😂
@@ToridoriGaming it's just one of those games that follows the movie 1 to 1, but at times Taking Liberties to be a fun video game
Your videos are just too good ha ha
Oh staaahp 😁
2:00 - Nananananana Cat baps! Cat baps.
Alright, dumb joke out of the way, another solid review. I remember gaming magazines had mixed opinions on this game when it came out. Some praised it (and probably just because its Disney) whilst others ripped into it, saying it was a boring slog that even a toddler couldn't get into. I remember asking my parents for this game for a birthday/christmas but got the Bugs Life game instead. I think that might have been a good call on their part (even though their reason was that they couldn't find the game). Still, this is why I'm glad I watch these reviews, so then I can determine if I missed out on anything XD
Hey Mags! You could also call them... kitty titties. ;)
And I can definitely see why this game would have mixed opinions - I personally enjoyed it but there were certainly things I could have done without *cough* rollercoaster *cough*. It's also weird how opinions differ, for example critics complain about the short length and awkward controls, meanwhile I thought it was a bit too long but liked the controls! :O
I love this game! And Finnish dub is very funny and nostalgic to me :D
I think the audio issues you get are because you’re playing ps1 games on an emulator because I have the discs and have never come across those problems. It’s either that or I’ve never noticed them
I got my groove back after watching this :)
Wahey! :D
I've never made it past the jaguars as kid...
Oh yas, this will be good.
Hope you like it! \o/
Just watched it. Laughed many times. XD
This game reminds me a mix between the Croc and Looney Tunes games.
On that note, I would really love to hear your thoughts on the game "Sheep, Dog 'n' Wolf"
I actually tried to play through it a couple of years back at a friends place but unfortunately had to leave before I could beat it. I only made it to that dreadful rollercoaster level.
Something that really annoyed me a lot was the fact that the game wont keep track of your extra lives/continues when you save and quit the game. Meaning that if you load a save file at a later point, you are off to a pretty unforgiving start with the bare minimum :/ Seems kinda silly that the save file couldn't keep track of a simple life counter.
The game also feels like it wants to be a collectathon but it never really seem to amounts to anything. Plus, there are so many points of no return that prevents you from collecting stuff you've missed.
The humor is definitely on of the high points for me. I loved that comment on the river stage where patcha points out "This scene was a lot shorter in the movie" xD
And like most PS1 Disney games of the time, it was one of the few that got dubbed into my own language, which at the time was really cool to me :3
I was really surprised to hear that this game was made by Argonaut Games too.
I had no idea the studio behind StarFox and the SuperFX chip on the Super Nintendo was also responsible for this.
This might not be nearly as noticeable but I still enjoyed the game :)
Really nice review!
Oh wow, unable to save your lives? That seems incredibly silly! Is it a super difficult game? I've put it on the list by the way. :D
Ten year old me had some of the best kid game skills ever, I can't play new super mario bros without dying anymore...
It sucks getting old!
It does, I miss my PS2
We played so many of the same games on PlayStation as kids we should absolutely be friends. Mainly Stewart little 2 the cyber chase and this. And bugs life and Spyro I bet
Remember 101 dalmatians didnt have audio issues or cutscenes from the movie 😜 THAT MEANS ITS THE BEST GAME EVER
The best game... ever ever? ;)
Toridori ever ever
I loved the game very much! Only thing that irritated me is that - at least in German version - the voices ot the maincast are the same as in the movie ... besides Kuzco and Izma. Luckily the Game voice of Kuzco fitted him very good regarding his unchanging attitude. The kind of voice you just couldnt think of saying something nice xD
yzma's original plot be like: 21:09
wait they made a game of this movie? and even stewart little?? huh neat
Indeed, I feel like a chunk of my childhood is missing. 😂
Yes I voted but I usually don't go with the crowd I tend to go my opposite way
I know you mostly review ps1 games, but you HAVE GOT TO check that one Tarzan game on the ps2. Play it, and you'll see why I recommend it, lol
Is that the one Caddicarus played? 😂
@@ToridoriGaming I think so. But yeah, you should definitely do a review on it
Seeing all the critisism you've mentioned in the video... There's still nothing wrong with the game for me, it's perfect and a classic lul
Kronk is best boi
He deserves so much better 😭
Looks pretty ok and it from the people that i ninja, well i'm sold
I've heard I-Ninja is decent. :)
@@ToridoriGaming it is, not worth 20+ dollars but the price of it today, sure
The bloody catacomb levels 🤬🤬
Never again will I play this game, purely for that level. 😂
I played this a gazillion times and never got past the river level
Have you thought about finishing it? :)
23:57 lol what even is that ending?

This is a seriously comprehensive review, especially for such a mediocre game. Well done!
Thank you! 😊
@ALC0LITE
How is it mediocre?
Demon llama 🦙!!!
Demon llama? Where!?
I don't know that's just me I forget what game I picked but I knew it wasn't going to win
I will still do those games at some point so don't worry! :D
@@ToridoriGaming ok😊
Llamas spit and eat hands.
Eat... hands? o.o
Carl the llama does that.
I thought that the game was quite tedious I my opinion.
Fair enough, what didn't you enjoy about it in particular?
Toridori: Problems are having to collect the kuzcoins to be the level, really having no lives, and having to see the game over countless times, overly long levels, and having to fight the kid with the bike. Oh, and don’t forget those *DAMN* Catacomb levels...
The game is okay the movie is great
Are you a thousand miles from know where or what? The people demand your ps1 era entertainment.
I'm a big fan of this game.But the movie,no
