Mom of two and weightlifter here…Weightlifting has given me an identity beyond motherhood- it is a personal private identity… looking at me you’d think I’m your average PTA soccer mom make the cookies haul the kids around. But I know I’m a weightlifter. I’m not particularly skilled- but I have this private joy that I keep within myself and it comes from weightlifting.

I’ve always felt that what gives me “meaning” is the pursuit of better. Heavier weights, better landings, faster cars, happier kids, happier wife. Whatever that is for you is what will give you meaning. When we settle into a routine of stagnation is when we “die” the first time.

I had all these dreams as a kid 70yrs ago..I wanted to be a cowboy with a limp from riding a wild horse. I wanted to be a pirate with an eye patch, I wanted to live on a remote paradise island, and have a beautiful brown skinned woman, I wanted to ride a motorbike across the world, witness a war first hand, cross steaming jungles, be a marksman, write a book..All of them came true, or are about to come true...I pumped iron over 55yrs ago when Charles Atlas was the man, and now I am starting again at 70yr old...You gotta have ' meaning ' or goals in life otherwise you wither and die...you only have one chance. make it a good one...

Late to the party, though I feel this video hits home this evening.
In August 2023 my world was shattered. I injured my shoulder at work. Before that I was a lion : bodybuilding, strength training, calisthenics, kettlebell lifting and on top of that working as a sailor and expressing that strength and those skills. That injury broke something and grabbed most of the meaningful things in my life. Sailing and working as a deckhand is so rewarding and the only job in which I have significant skills. Also bodybuilding and working out as a hobby and a passion was just gone.
Now that I'm back from this hell, I realize the importance of it all for me. The emotions, the failures, the victories and the whole spectrum of feelings that lifting brings is a whole other world.

This was a very nuanced and great video Zach. I like the acknowledgment of societal ills, and those being barriers to meaning in peoples lives, and not discrediting that tradition. I feel too often to lifters focus solely on the internal, and disregard the external material conditions, refusing to acknowledge that if we were always content, we would've never have gone beyond bashing in each others' skulls in the caves, let alone something like the American revolution. But what you've said here, acknowledges that tradition of changing the external world, it doesn't detract from it, while still acknowledging we must tackle the crisis of meaning. Too many of us are content to go softly into that good night. What will we do about it?

academics, careers, grinding 9 to 5 can have some meaning, but what I have found out for myself is that great materialistic meaning is empty. if you can find that one thing that gives you a reason to actually get up and look forward to, be it lifting, be other more simpler things and you can enjoy that true meaning in simpler things. it's like popping 250µg of Lucy and going into the forest for the first time in months after grinding out exam after exam, and then you can see the value simple things and the power of sheer existence can have. I love these deeper videos of your's so much, man. always love stuff that hits me deep down and makes me think & reflect. that's insanely valuable to me aswell!

Good video, and I can identify with your views on this. I started back to the gym at 45, after a 20 year break in athletic activity and climbing career ladders, and then stumbled into weightlifting at 50 and fell in love with the aesthetics of it, the whole golf or bowling feel to it that you never stop working on the form points or completely master it -- it is never boring. That was 12 years ago. I competed a few years in local masters competitions, won a couple of medals. I feel very fortunate that I can still do this activity at my age, due to having started 12 years ago. I could not imagine being a beginner now.

1:30 that's all mainly due to the diet.
also you don't get to live to 80 looking like that.
and the shorter your life span is the more crappy the last years of your life are - so you just suffer then die early.
the people making it over 90 these days are very happy and live very active lives in retirement.
Rostropovich practised until he died and he was actively improving until his 70's... a humanitarian ... and he didn't even have all the tools and know how we have now.
Hillary Hahn may have only peaked in her 50's. Who knows if that was her best - the custom compositions.
But there is something you can keep growing and getting better at till the day you die (given a healthy life style). All manner of inner workings. They will keep mind sharp too.
Love and happiness can grow with age. Bliss can become ones natural state and an ever deepening constant knowing can pervade you.
That man was describing himself - he is the worm. Humans don't have a worm inside them - they just lack any proper guidance to cultivate and truly develop their being.

Zack, I really appreciate this vid in tandem with your other video on steroid use.
I'm sure you've received comments like this before, but on the off chance you read this I hope it moves you differently.
The reason that hard things lead to purpose and meaning is because of God and specifically the God of the bible. I see you are a thinker as much as you are a weightlifter and I pray you will not go astray. This is the truth.
The connection relates to the cross specifically. Jesus suffering gives us meaning in our suffering. Lifting weights is a form of physical suffering and through suffering we become stronger. The physical aspect points to the spiritual aspect. However, the spiritual suffering only receives purpose if you believe in Him. If you don't believe then it's not suffering with a purpose. It's just suffering.
Becoming a Christian wouldn't be the most beneficial thing for your channel, but it would be a good thing for you and I guarantee you would experience mind bending meaning and purpose.
Look into it and consider HIM. You can start with Philippians 3:8-11. May God bless you and your videos.

going to the gym and doing exercise in general is great... BUT! thousands and thousands, probably millions of young people are not going out to parties, not experiencing teenager/early adulthood relationships, going to hike with other people etc etc..... you will not be able to do this in your 30s bro. i mean you could do it too, but it will not be the same experience... you dont want to be the old guy between a bunch of 20 years old in a party for example. and im not a party guy at all, its just an example.
like always, everything works with balance. get to the gym, give your 100%.... but dont hide in the gym to replace social interactions.
hiding in drugs, gym, videogames etc.... is not the answer.

Lifting is suffering the same fate as a good home cooked meal.
The time requirements to do either is not possible because of everything else we have to do just to survive.
This is because money is worth less and less each year so you must earn or work more and more each year.
Our financial system has built into it the continual devaluation of labor to the point where 99% of transactions are going to the very top of companies.
This is not sustainable and the management side is literally consuming the supply side of the equation.
As a result, anyone living on the supply side is living a less and less healthy life style just to survive.

I profoundly think that a lake of meeting is causing a lot of problems intertwined with other things of course.
Take work for example. If we start at the dawn of humanity, doing hard stuff was to provide and sustain your community. The meaning of everyone doing what they can within their capacity was to make sure everyone else is safe, feed and warm. Later on it diluted somewhat that the community was a bit looser, however you still did work that you saw through from start to finish, and that in it self is meaning full, we created something that helped others. and with it came the chance to provide for families and friends. But the industrial revolution together with capitalism took away the meaning of creating. But hey at least the suffering through a heartless job might have given your family a chance of a better life some day= meaning. But we have progressed even further in to capitalism and now most jobs are totally deprived from meaning or even harm others, and the grind doesn't even pay off. Soo where is the point? Some are fortunate to grind and stay alive so they can spent time with friends and family, but those who do not have such a deep condition with ppl need something else to do in the short time of the day where they have agency over themselves. And for some they put meaning in eating, or meaning in drinking, or put it in even more destructive stuff because they don't have anything else to attach meaning to.
And sure putting your energy in to something positive like weightlifting and finding meaning there won't solve all the other problems, but it might at least just give you the edge to stay sharp and healthy enough to work towards a better future.
So ppl do something (i know time is rare it can be something small) go weightlifting, do art, write a book or read them, build stuff for the community do something do anything that gives you meaning and maybe this will give you the energy back for passion, and compassion and working towards changing something in the world.

People are genetically becoming weaker. Evolution thrives on selection pressure. We as humans have got to a point where selection pressure is virtually gone. So there's no reason for our genes to adapt and overcome anything. Case in point to the genetic reference. Why can two people eat the same exact shitty diet, yet one develops major health conditions and the other one has virtually none, even has a great physique and everything. Genetics. Genetics are the reason why you can't "just put your mind to it and achieve ANYTHING." It's a lie. You can't achieve ANYTHING you want just by putting your mind to it. You can't train in the 100m dash enough to beat Usain Bolt. You don't have the genetics. You can put your mind to it all you want, it's not happening.
I've never met a generation so mentally and physically weak. Everyone under 30 gets stressed out and anxious so easily. They read comments and get depressed lol. Comments from people they will never meet irl has negative effects on them. Why not just "put your mind to" not being so weak minded. What's even more funny is this rallies a ton of other weak people to the cause. When they talk about being weak it attracts all the other weak people to cheerlead for the person and they gain a massive following from it. Then you have large groups of people in an echo chambers all talking about how easily they get anxiety attacks.

Guys, lifting won't give meaning to your lives. It can be a good way to MANAGE the nihilism and emptiness, but you'll have to go deeper. Once you get there, lifting will be optional.
In my 40s, I was trying to commit "end of life by fitness." Lots of extreme stuff, meditation, etc. I did not succeed. Now I just work out like others go to the office. At least I tried, lol.
We are emprisoned by the freedom of all the superficial identity choices we have and our material comfort. An endless abundance of trivial purposes and meanings.

Billion people are not obese because of lack of meaing. They are obese because of poisoned food supply and bad city planning which does not facilitate walking for people. There are channels dedicated to this. Europe does not have obesity problem because our food is more protected to not have chemicals in them unlike in america and because our cities were created before industrial age and cars. They were created so that most things would be within walking distances thus incentivising walking. Meanwhile in america it is inconvenient to walk anywhere.

You guys really need to stop with this weird soy is feminizing men, the rich want to take our protein away conspiracy. If you have access to something free range, or a local butchery it's fine, but lets not act like mass factory farming is something that is sustainable on a planet with a population of 8 billion. I imagine you're the type that doesn't believe in the environmental impact of mass factory farming though right? Let's not re shape history and act like humans have lived off animal sources of protein alone. There was also a pretty strong emphasis on the gathering part of a hunter gatherer society, especially before we could use sophisticated tools. Like I said, if you have access to a farm shop or butcher then great, but the meat that we have on supermarket shelves and mass factory farming are not a long term solution. I'm sure these magical and mythical oligarchs are hiding all the meat and are secretly getting shredded and strong to overthrow us physically. You know how foolish you sound?
