This the the exact channel that teenage me would have wanted. Love it.
If only I had these videos when I was printing out bass tabs during computer class in middle school 😩
Same
Classic
Same I used to print them out , and then realised they were way wrong 😂
My teacher wouldn't let me print if it wasn't school related, I had to hand copy them
The tabs I had (and my ear) totally messed up one of these parts. This is so cool!
I'd love for you to do a tutorial of the maxwell murder solo
This is amazing! The man himself teaching us how awesomely he plays! Thanks, Matt Freeman!
You’re the reason I picked up the bass, thank you for the slow mo finger work!!
Same here bro!🎸
Super cool, hope you’ll make more instructional videos like this!
Took this in to my bass teacher in 94 when I was learning. He worked on it for 30 minutes and still got it wrong! Got me close enough to eventually figure it out on my own. That first Rancid record was/is absolutely amazing and seems under-appreciated in the catalog.
Stoked to get these instructional videos. Please do more!!
I never could imagine in my adolescent live that I will watch one think like this when I knew rancid!
I have a list of songs that I would like to watch!
I'm very excited to watch you guys Rancid in NY. I will go from Brazil to watch Rancid and GDay🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽
Wao, I was playing this 95% correct for 29 years (learned by ear)!
Only differences are:
1. I can do the hammer on / pull off pretty hard and spot on with my pinky, but, I guess I was missing the slide.
2. I always played the chromatic rundown on the wrong string; instead playing it on the 2nd string, I played it on the 3rd string, going down from D to C, instead of G to F octaves (Problem fixed!).
3. I always ended the last part on A# instead of A, BUT, I think Matt could agree with me that A# is the correct musical progression of that scale (in 0:51 he ends on the A# like I do, jejeje!).
Other than that, now I can play it the way it was invented.
Thank you, Matt!
The GOAT of punk bass
This great Matt , I love your lines , We ALL do !
Awesome lesson!!!! I would love to see one for Rejected- still can't quite figure out that intro!!! Thank you Matt!
Now if you can just do this for every part of every Rancid song, please! 🤣
Dude! You are the man for doing this! This bassline has been stuck in my head since 93! Cool to learn how to actually play it... the tabs ive looked up have all been wrong! thanks
Thanks so much for putting these videos together Matt! Can’t wait to see more of them. Your picking technique and a video on how you get that killer tone would be amazing. Love your work 🙏
This is great, man. Thanks for making these. It's awesome to hear the bass in isolation.
I’d love for you to also touch on how you’re making the decisions that you made. It’s cool to see you play through a song at speed. It’s helpful for you to go slow and show the fingering and technique. But I’d really love to hear, “This song is in the key of X and the guitars are playing chords X-Y-Z, so while the guitars are on chord X, I’m starting with that root note but doing this run using the 2nd, 4th and 5th of X and then in order to meet the guitars on chord Y, I’m doing…”
So cool you are doing this! This is really inspiring for people like me who love your bass playing but find it intimidating to approach.
Best bassist in punk rock!
Diggin your channel. Appreciate the breakdown of Hyena (one of my all-time favorite Rancid songs). I'm sure I'm not the only one who appreciates it. Keep em coming!
Thanks for this job and help us! Respect!
Very cool, Matt! Thank you for taking the time to give back to the fans. I just started learning the bass a few months ago for a new band. I'm stoked to see you going into more depth on your channel!
Matt - Thanks bro. You and Dave Schools are the best.
I love this so much! I've been following you since OPIV, 32ish years now, this is SO AWESOME!
You know what would be sick is if there was a little tab reel in the corner of the screen that showed the tablature as you demonstrated the riff.
Awesome! I was always playing this in fourth finger position (instead of Maestro here in first), and had no idea about the Eb hammer on. Thank you sir!
Yes!! More instructional videos, please 🙏
Thanks Matt !
So cool. Thanks for the lesson!
Awesome video!!!! Thank you Matt !!!!!
What a gift. Thank you for these breakdowns of your music.
I wished there are more cool bass teacher, like Matt !
Cheers for these Matt, love ya work legend.
That's so awesome... Thank you Matt, I've always wanted to learn your bass lines but could never find any really good teachers.... No one is better than yourself to teach us... Fuck yeah 🤘🤘
Thank you so much for these Videos Matt. You are highly appreciated. I'm 53 and recently picked up the bass from my earlier years. I am having a blast relearning how to play. For now, I mostly focus on your songs. Thanks again for these videos.
Amazing. Thank you so much for doing this Matt.
Great video! Love to hear it from the master
This is awesome! I wish I had this when I was a teenager when this came out and I was trying to play it (didn’t know anything about the bass at the time).
So cool you're doing these, I love it!
tank you Matt! its amazing could watch you play.
Im loving the channel brother! Really appreciate you taking the time to do these for us🤘
I've always wondered what was happening with this intro. The notes sorta slur and swing in a way that I've never been able to pinpoint. This was awesome
You're a big inspiration for all of us Matt 🙌 can't thank you enough 🤗
I bought this album on cassette and wore it out! Good memories. Love this band.
if you do more instructional videos like this I would love it so much
Excelente!!
Thank you very much. I love your song.❤
Hell yeah! Thanks Matt!
I did better than I thought 💀💀💀💀. Thanks, I like this and hope you do more :)
Really great video, thank you for sharing your tricks too!
Thanks! This is awesome, hope you do a lot more of these!
Thanks Matt - just got my new P Bass today to start learning your amazing lines. You’re a legend
I was impressed by your bass playing, so I started playing bass myself.
Very thanks you provide a detailed lecture on fast bass playing!
Great little riff thanks for the lesson
Lovely!!
This is such a fun baseline to play along with !
Thanx Matt! You are GOD OF BASS!!!!!!!
Really great, Matt
I really enjoy your videos!
Thanks for using your precious time to explain your basslines.
Thanks again!
A french fan!
Great stuff Matt, thanks very much for these! Cheers!
You are amazing!
Got some nice jazz swing to it there Matt awesome
Nice one Matt best bass player ever
Holy shit please more of this sort of video its so cool! Thank you :)
the smile on his face when he plays it full speed can't be faked.
Amazing. I love this. 20 plus years and I’ve had the positioning and a few of those notes wrong near the end haha.
Thanks to UA-cam I also zoomed in on your left hand cause all this is fucking awesome.
Awesome🙌
You're the best Matt!
Thanks for making this.
Thanks, Matt!
Hey Matt!! Can you do Blacklisted? I picked up bass because I heard that bassline. Ive been a fan forever!
Wooohoooo thank you so much! 🙏🙌
Everything about this is awesome. I wish you could do Rejected next. Even though I have seen the video I sure need a slowed down version of the opening riff!
That’s funny man this is the first bassline I tried to learn as a kid in the 90s and I was close , but NO CIGAR lmaoooo. This is great Matt , thank you. Can you do a breakdown of corruption, Please ?
Legend!
Master!
It’s very cool to have a front seat for this
Legend
Freeman, don't be shy man, yes we all know theory, but nobody use it like you do. That's the reason why you are great bass player, not to much knowledge but the way how you speak ( Victor Wooten ) :)
so sick
Legend!!
It would be cool if you would share the story behind the bass line and how it came up. I could watch this all day long, fascinating! Thank you! ❤👀🎸
Yesssss. We'd love to hear how these lines come about and how they're developed, and any and everything about the songwriting you're willing to share.
love this! could u do more songs from lets go? huge fan
Thank you!
Matt, your greatest Solo is in Axiom. Can you do that please?
...and I've been playing it wrong for 20 years 😅
INSTRUCTOR MCCALL teaching you how to be a GOAT
I also own an upright bass aswell matt, never did get pickups for it. I literally just played a couple of demented are go tracks and that was it for me. :P
I think i felt i wanted it, but in the end i just didn't have people to play with and practice for.
i'm sure you can handle a tab reel yourself, but if you can't i might be able to fix up a small program for ya free of charge. Least so you wouldn't have to go into MS paint and drag the circles u know, Just type a number and position them for you, shouldn't be too hard. Get the stills and edit them in beat, or use it for something else.
Devil’s in the details
Been listening to rancid since i was a kid, rancid s/t #1... Youve always been my favorite punk bassist. Can you PLEASE consider doing a video on Axiom?
Hell yeah!
Thank you for writing interesting bass parts. If it wasn't for you, my brother would be playing nothing but root notes and my band would worse than it already it. Much appreciated!
Charlie & Sinful Maggie
That’s jazzy as fuck!
I fucking love it! Keep the vids coming. If I could make a request - otherside from indestructible I thought was always an under rated piece from you that I’d love to see how you play.
When Matt's eyebrows get moving, he gets moving.
Yeaaah!
👏👏👏
yeaaaahhh🤟
This is awesome, anyway you could spill your amp settings to capture the sounds?
@mattfreemansbassbunker can you do a video showing the settings you run your Bassman head on?
