These kind of monstrous retro recipes are the kind of thing I expect from B. Dylan Hollis; you could do some collab/cross-promo stuff by getting recipe recommendations from him?
Two that are interesting - • tomato soup cake (from the 1930s Depression) • various jello (R) salads with cream, fruit and nuts (roughly 1950s and 60s)
There is a reason Barry and Ashens don't do a lot of videos together very often and I know why. They blame it on the travel distance but i know the real reason is because they need time for their guts to heal from some of the stuff eaten/drunk.
Barry: Points out the unique shape of the weighing bowl, intended for pouring the contents out. Also Barry: Ignores the shape completely to dump it out the side.
When it comes to spam, you could have a go at making your own, just needs a lump of ham, a pork shoulder, a mincing machine, a starch of some kind, some pink preserving salt (not the himalayan stuff, actual meat preserver stuff) and a brick, yes, a brick, cos you need something to compress it, TheWolfePit did a video some years ago on making his own DIY spam, turned out to be much better than the tinned kind... :D
It is always awkward to cook in a strangers kitchen, so not surprised that Ashens had trouble using the grill. Hope they got out before the owner got back, and that the smell did not linger.
If you want to actually enjoy yourselves eating spam, I'd recommend either a Hawaiian or Filipino recipie. Musubi or spam tocino with eggs are wonderful eats. Thanks for the fun video 👏
This was a fantastic video. I agree with Ashens…the recipe was horrible. My favorite part was when he said he might be slightly offended if you left the food in his house. Thanks for the video and the laughter on a Monday morning!
From what I remember about the factory they use premium cuts of meat for spam and they cook it in the can. I love spam. Spam sandwich, you fry the spam and you put it on bread with mayonnaise, it is absolutely delicious.
I did spot that the new tin and the old one pictured with the key were both 340grams, so no shrinkage at all! The same spammy goodness of old if you ignore today prices! Love you and Stuart Ashen together.
I love retro recipes, how we used to eat; love the insights. I’ve brought many old recipes upto date or slightly adjusted other countries recipes which needed it to modern tastes. You aught to make the retro recipes a thing Bazza 😎👍🏼
While Ashens may think fruit and meat is awful together, one of the best dishes I've ever had was my MIL's brisket made for Passover. The brisket, after cooking and slicing, is cooked again with apricots and prunes in a gravy thickened with ginger snaps. It's incredible. Everyone who used to come for Passover (30-40 people) adored it. And in the U.S. I know people make ham with pineapple on top and love it.
I remember my Mum yelling the words "cut as thinly as you can" It was my job to make everyone's lunches and I always thought Oh dont you worry bc that stuff is disgusting. Sometimes she would slice it and fry it. One has to cover it up with ketchup to hide the flavour. Lol
Used to love Spam sandwiches and fritters but had some a couple of years ago and it was far too salty for me now. Great video, always a laugh when you and Ashens get together.
Somehow I've never tried spam, but I know in Hawaii they use it all the time and apparently make delicious dishes. And there is lower sodium spam which I might give a try.
When I was a kid, my dad brought a canna Spam home, and after my mom cooked it, she told him never to bring another one home ever again. None of us like the taste or smell of it and to this day, I have not eaten or boughten any of it, and never will.
Barry and Stuart. These 50s - 60s horror tv dinners were the main reason I abandoned all US cooking and dove into French, Chinese, Indian etc. cooking and never looked back. If you want really nightmarish vintage suggestions I think one of the worst of the lot are the sweet gelatine desserts with tuna and salad veggies. I tremble just thinking of it. You guys are very funny and great to watch as you wolf down the little franken-appetizers. All the best Jim retired Mexico
American here. Broil means just the top heating element in the oven is on and it's on full blast. Also thanks Stuart, going to have that 🎶 🎵 Spam balls 🎶 🎵 in my head today 😅😅
Being someone who lives in Minnesota, USA, the home of Spam, and who also lived through the seventies, I've had any number of Spam dishes in my time but ground Spam on peaches (apricots) is a new one. I still enjoy Spam as it is excellent sliced thin and pan fried until the edges are a bit crispy. I'm sorry you had to experience our native meat in such a poor receptacle. 🤣 One item that was also a popular side dish in the seventies was Jello with savory things in it such as celery, tomatoes, and mayonnaise. It would be very interesting to see you boys try one of these "interesting" recipes.
SPAM is huge in Hawaii. Many people grab SPAM musubi for breakfast on their way to work. There are even some restaurants in Hawaii that serve cocktails in SPAM cans. There's an annual SPAM-jam street festival in Waikiki in April.
My grandmother used to have index cards with all sorts of recipes she'd gleaned from magazines and newspapers. We kids got to taste test them whenever we visited. Most were horrible but we didn't want to hurt her feelings. Oh, and she also made us jugs of Kool Aid sans sugar.
Without the peaches, ketchup and milk it would perhaps made a nice meatball. I have to admid I don't mind spam, in Germany it is called Breakfast meat and fried in a pan I find it quite tasty...once or twice a year
There are still quite a few cans that come with keys to open it. Like target corned beef. These days they seem to come more with higher quality cans, or at least higher price cans. I like the system. I've only ever cut myself once and that was nasty and deep, but it was my fault, really. Don't blame the can, the can was a good boy.
Only one thing Spam should be used for is... Spam Fritters, or as there used to a chippy in North Wales that did them battered, a taste explosion, for winners.

Sugar cream pie would be fantastic 😊😊😊😊😊

Try some of those aspic/gelotine/jelotine? Savoury rings 😂
Can you try an 'is it cake?' Vlog? Where you make a replica of an object in cake? Or have you already done this and I've missed it? 😊
There is a reason Barry and Ashens don't do a lot of videos together very often and I know why. They blame it on the travel distance but i know the real reason is because they need time for their guts to heal from some of the stuff eaten/drunk.
Knowing that Ashens gave Nerdcubed lactose intolerance during Christmas, it makes sense.
Lore drop
Exactly! 🤣👍
Correction: Barry needs time to recover. Ashens has an iron stomach from years of eating or drinking long expired items.
1970s recipes are quite the fever dream. Combining things that should ABSOLUTELY NOT be combined.
SPAM FIESTA PEACH CUPS sounds like a line from a deleted verse of "I Am The Walrus".

Thank you! I was telling him (loudly) through my phone screen that he was doing it wrong 😂😂
Expert Chef Barry Lewis
Loving the Stone Cold Stuart Ashens look!
You and Ashens are amazing together barry! Thanks for all your these awesome collabs!
Long live the collab team of the ages that is Barry and Ashens.. :)
"California sunshine" is absolutely my term for dog barf now.
On so many levels, it's just so fitting.
Especially since I've had to deal with all three at the same time.
“it just tastes like cooked spam on apricot “ - funny, that. 😂
It always feels like a special treat when we get to see parts of Ashen's house that aren't his sofa.
Barshens ... Yaaaay!
So much Barshens vibes, I LOVE IT! utter madness.
Needs Eli to describe the "huff" and the "amplitude".
SPAM FOR SLEPP
10:10 When Ashens says something is unpleasant you know it's REALLY unpleasant
When it comes to spam, you could have a go at making your own, just needs a lump of ham, a pork shoulder, a mincing machine, a starch of some kind, some pink preserving salt (not the himalayan stuff, actual meat preserver stuff) and a brick, yes, a brick, cos you need something to compress it, TheWolfePit did a video some years ago on making his own DIY spam, turned out to be much better than the tinned kind... :D
+1 for the WolfePit, he keeps it real!
You and ashens are like peas in a pod. Great video Barry and Ashens!!
It is always awkward to cook in a strangers kitchen, so not surprised that Ashens had trouble using the grill. Hope they got out before the owner got back, and that the smell did not linger.
LOVE Spam! Thanks for this Barry! It really needs more chances to shine! 🤤🤤🤤🤤❤️❤️❤️
Why just nut buy real fuxking beef?
It’s good to see you doing another video with Stuart, you guys have such good chemistry.
Looking at all those ingredients in the bowl before it was mixed looked like the worst breakfast cerial you could ever have 😂
"Breakfast Mess, Breakfast Mess, It's the one we love the best."
Hahaha ikr 🤣👍
If you want to actually enjoy yourselves eating spam, I'd recommend either a Hawaiian or Filipino recipie. Musubi or spam tocino with eggs are wonderful eats. Thanks for the fun video 👏
Don't forget to save the can for a refreshing SPAM cocktail. And yes, that is a thing...
1:31 the Sainsbury’s own brand of “Chopped Pork and Ham” still has the key to,open it..
I love spam, fried on toast is so good 😋
Hilarious. Love you guys together. But … I usually make your recipes this one I will just watch you and Stewart eat. Lol
I love Stewart Ashens!
This was a fantastic video. I agree with Ashens…the recipe was horrible. My favorite part was when he said he might be slightly offended if you left the food in his house. Thanks for the video and the laughter on a Monday morning!
I absolutely LOVE you two together, it's always hilarious. 🤣🤣

It depends on how you prepare it.
Loving these videos! It’s like a little nugget of Barshens back again, more of these please!
Another great vid Baz, keep it up! 😁💕

love the ashens "shaved villain" look
"One more. For luck!" - this is how I cook.
These two guys doing something together is some of my favorite UA-cam. Thanks for driving!
Love seeing my two favorite (and first) UA-camrs together.
You two together are brilliant. Please do the advent calendar together
Love your content with ashens!
It was so nice seeing Barshens together again! It's been too long! Great content, guys!
Used to love Spam sandwiches and fritters but had some a couple of years ago and it was far too salty for me now.
Great video, always a laugh when you and Ashens get together.
Somehow I've never tried spam, but I know in Hawaii they use it all the time and apparently make delicious dishes. And there is lower sodium spam which I might give a try.
your best bet is the low sodium spam. still isnt the healthiest thing, but it's a lot better than the alternative
When I was a kid, my dad brought a canna Spam home, and after my mom cooked it, she told him never to bring another one home ever again. None of us like the taste or smell of it and to this day, I have not eaten or boughten any of it, and never will.
Love these videos. That said, I grew up in the States during the 70's and would have run like hell if my mom ever made this for dinner.
Very interesting recipe & thanks Barry n Steward 🤔👍
Spam is Amazing... Slice it up and fry it... Yum...

Thank you Barry and Stuart for this masterpiece of disgust. 😂❤
Love it when you 2 get together - more of this please! Especially need more Will It... vids! 😁
Thank you both for taking one for the team!😂 Fruit and meat should *never* be combined except for the explicit reason of torturing your enemies!
I love the pause and synchronised "Extra Good Eating" the first time you reached it 😂
Recipes like this one make me glad I'm a vegetarian
Some things should stay in the 70's 😂
American here. Broil means just the top heating element in the oven is on and it's on full blast. Also thanks Stuart, going to have that 🎶 🎵 Spam balls 🎶 🎵 in my head today 😅😅
I've identified the problem guys, the recipe had a typo. They misspelled cat soup for catsup. That's why it doesn't taste as intended. 😮
the best duo
glad to see you guys collabing again more often, i always love it

I love you two together so much
"Spammy waft" is a great name for a band
no one take that, it's mine! lol
The steps are like the ones that you would get on the great British bake off
Why did you have the door open when the grill was on?
Some of my favorite English men.
SPAM is huge in Hawaii. Many people grab SPAM musubi for breakfast on their way to work. There are even some restaurants in Hawaii that serve cocktails in SPAM cans. There's an annual SPAM-jam street festival in Waikiki in April.
Haha you two are a comedy pair!!! I loved the Ashens/ Lewis collab!
Yay, more Barry and Stuart hilarity!!!
I love you two bantering together. Its a great partnership. Pity about the 5 hour drive.
Spam is like cilantro, you either love it or wish you could write it from the face of the earth.
Can we have more Barry and Ashens content please!
5:46 why didn’t you buy fresh Pears and just half them Barry
Barry you need to get the Spam cookbook. Yes it's a real thing.
So great to see Ashen
I don't think four words have ever made me feel so aggressively ill.
Love you guys!!
I imagine the reason recipes like this exist is because people back then had dulled taste buds, from all the smoking and toxic bulding materials.
They used to taste in black and white.
It's a eye catching add hoping the absurdity catches in some ppl
to be fair color was invented around the 60 or 70's 🤣 @@cartoonhead9222
My grandmother used to have index cards with all sorts of recipes she'd gleaned from magazines and newspapers. We kids got to taste test them whenever we visited. Most were horrible but we didn't want to hurt her feelings. Oh, and she also made us jugs of Kool Aid sans sugar.
my fav videos, barry and ashens
Takes me back to school... Spam Fritters and Chips.. I used to cover that in ketchup.
I love spam so i might try this
Without the peaches, ketchup and milk it would perhaps made a nice meatball. I have to admid I don't mind spam, in Germany it is called Breakfast meat and fried in a pan I find it quite tasty...once or twice a year
Its good to see that Ashens takes his membership of the League against Fruit with Meat seriously, Mister Silverman is bound to be proud
Watching you eat them at the end genuinely put me off my lunch. Couldn’t finish my sandwich
Yay! Barshens together again! 😊
YES MORE BARSHENS!
"I dunno, feels wrong now, Barry..." That was my immediate thought then as well.
The look on Stuarts face when Barry said Spam 😂
Spam slices fried in Old Bay with fries, meal of Kings.
Thanks for trying this so no one ever has to again
same size i think, 12oz is 340g and thats the size of the cans i buy
Normally letting two young kids (trust me) "help" in the kitchen, is a very bad idea! In this case I loved it. Thanx guys. 💙👍

I need "it might be fine" on a shirt haha
Yes! Ahens and Barry again!
You can get peach halves in morrisons Del Monte still do them x
Honestly, fried spam is quite nice.
Only one thing Spam should be used for is... Spam Fritters, or as there used to a chippy in North Wales that did them battered, a taste explosion, for winners.
Good old spam, very retro
you can get peach halves in asda. i keep buying them accidentally instead of slices
