Oh yes, young people should all be driving sports cars. No young person wants a cushy, quiet, and very efficient big sedan. Give me a break. I'm over the hard break neck acceleration of "young" people cars. More young people need to buy these cars.
Simply speaking, Alex provides the most rational and comprehensive English language car reviews on UA-cam. Over the years, his personality and comfort before the camera have also grown without becoming overbearing. He is my number one recommendation for cogent information for my car shopping friends.
It's a beautiful car! It may not be a "sport" model but I recently switched from 10 years of driving a CUV to a midsize sedan and lower center of gravity is immediately apparent and my sedan feels more stable in turns. I would guess the ES is fine for all but the hardcore drivers.
Bout 5 years ago i was looking for a used Lexus ES cause i read they are so reliable. One of the hardest vehicles i ever looked for and couldnt find one.
Same with LS. The only used Lexus are RX.
That's cause we don't want to give them up. We have an ES 175k+, GS 225k and a one yr old Ux 10k.

15 year loyal Lexus owner, love everything of the ES hybrid, except the infortainment system with trackpad.
We went with the 2018 CT6 2.0E plug-in and really enjoy CUE system.
I purchased my 2014 ES new. 8 years later (I purchased it in November 2013), and with over 100k, it continues to drive like the day I drove it off the lot. I have never owned a car that has held up so well for so long. The feel of the materials, the paint, the lack of any visible wear... I still love my car after this long. I'm now considering buying a new ES--- it's almost hard to justify, since my current ES has held up so well... But the 2022, looks amazing! Also aside from new tires, breaks, oil changes and schedule maintenance, I have never needed to do anything else to my ES-- something I cannot say for BMW or MB. To be honest, I can't imagine ever owning another brand of car.
You car should last another 150,000-2000,000 miles without major issues. To help achieve that goal, 'drain and fill ' transmission fluid changes should be done every 60K miles even if they don't appear as officially scheduled maintenance. Happy trails!
Yeah and the resale value on your 2014 ES is incredibly high, especially right now over the last year and a half your car has gone up in value probably $6000, so if you wanted to sell it and lease a new ES, and then buy it it would be a great time, I had been looking at buying an ES 300 H your generation before the crazy pandemic used car prices and no joke they are 6-9k more for the exact same cars/specs…. Just saying it might be a good time to sell👌
I have a 2013 ES300h with 120K on it, and feel exactly the same way! It's hard to imagine getting another car that would be just as beautiful, well-performing and fun to drive, Plus has a sun/moon roof, heated/cool seats, and a CD player! It also still gets 40 mpg and runs on regular unleaded gas, which is nice given that gas prices are so high now.

Can you please tell me if the FWD is an issue for revalue everyday driving and for the rain and snow? That’s my only issue with the car
Correction: at 1:12 It comes standard with singular LED headlamps, not halogen. You have the upgraded triple beam headlight option.
Really love this gen of the ES. I think the ES's interior with the LC- and LS-like door handles and the real wood trim on the dash has more flair than the interior of the new NX

You got it - I'm in the category of luxury = good seats, smooth ride, as little engine sound as possible and adequate power. I'd go for the ESh. My older G80 has hard seats, lots of engine noise and a ride that is sporty not smooth. The interior and tech are top notch though. I wouldn't buy a G80 again unless Genesis decided to dramatically change the character to focus on comfort.
Genesis has gotten a lot better in the last 2 years in comfort and smooth ride. Check them out now! I sat in a G80 and G90 (2020 model year) and they were the most comfortable seats ever.

Right now, with the Electric Tsunami coming, I wouldn't even consider anything less than a Hybrid.
Yes, they will be declining no later than middle of this decade, no matter how hard Toyota keeps pushing them. Did you see how the Japanese held out for redesigned 2018 Accord and Camry? All to face double-digit decline every year.
The tsunami will be a disappointment.
There won't be enough charging infrastructure across the entire country and there's a limited supply of precious metals needed for electric vehicles.
@@cokiea57 as far as the electric vehicles batteries will cost the same as a small car to replace, really doubt the success. The Toyota/Lexus batteries are not that cost, and the cells ca be replaced individually in order to minimize the costs.
Only a battleship has more gray going on than this example.

Thank you Alex for correctly pointing out the transmission knowledge about these Toyota/Lexus hybrid system that's ignored and misinformed by most UA-cam automotive journalist, most just blatantly call it "CVT" and make a one sentence complain and gloss over it.
It's an e-CVT. The issue is that is called such a similar name even though it's fundamentally different from the conventional belt driven CVT.
love Alex's standard rant about how split power shift planetary gear systems, should never be labeled as a CVT or an eCVT... I'm sure it will be part of his epitaph lol....

if you can find a used one and go for a 2019 like I did I got mine for around 37k after fees. and taxes 🤷🏽♂️. I love mine although the only thing I don't like is that I got an android phone after I got the car and the 2019 doesn't support android auto. Oh well. Although mine is a 300h luxury trim

I can't understand why they just don't give up developing navigation for their cars. Why not just important Google Maps or Waze across the board.
The all-new UI in the new 2022 NX now uses Google Maps navigation natively.
I have a bad back and a sciatic problem. I love the blue that is only available in the F Trim this year, but I am wondering if the seat is any less comfortable than that of the seat in the Ultra Luxury Trim? The seat is more important than the color in my particular situation. Are you able to shed any light on this? Thank you.

It's an e-CVT. It's a victim of it's name. It's a CVT by definition. The bad rap is from the belt driven CVTs plaguing non hybrid cars.

Please allow me to explain. The most common mistake people make in the "CVT debate" is that they misinterpret the term CVT.
The term CVT has nothing to do with the architecture or how the transmission works but what she does. In other words: CVT is the RESULT
of how a transmission works. I will clarify this with 2 examples:
First example:
The transmission with 2 pulleys and a belt (AKA the traditional CVT)
In short: the most common type of a CVT uses a V-belt witch runs between two pulleys, the cone-shaped halfes of the pulleys can move together and apart.
So that is how the transmission is built and how she works and the RESULT of that is a transmission with no fixed gears or steps but instead of that
a transmission with a variable gear ratio or CVT.
Second example:
Toyota/Lexus Hybrid Synergy Drive (AKA eCVT)
Very short ( because it's to complicated) : this transmission uses a complex planetary gear system with 2 electric motors- generators (MG 1 & MG 2)
integrated. The mechanical gearing design of the system allow the mechanical power from the ICE to be split in 3 ways:
- Extra torque at the wheels under constant rotation speed.
- Extra rotation speed at the wheels under constant torque
- Power for an electric generator.
Now that is the architecture of the system and how it works and it's completely different from the one in the first example with the 2 pulleys, you can't
even compare them.
But the RESULT is exactly the same: a transmission with a variable gear ratio or CVT( Continuous Variable Transmission).
CVT's are used in many vehicles even in bicycles ( NuVinci hub). And of course a CVT of a bicycle works totally different than a CVT of a car, but the
RESULT is, again , exactly the same: a transmission with a variable gear ratio or CVT.
Conclusion:
Every transmission with pulleys and a belt is a CVT, but not every CVT is a transmission with pulleys and a belt.

Alex, With the impending demise of the Avalon, we can probably expect an uptick in ES sales and a merciful end to the 'ES is just a glorified Avalon' debates. In regard to Hybrid fuel savings, how many potential mpg are lost due to those wider F-Sport tires? If rear headroom is insufficient, you can always stick your head out the window. That coping strategy works very well for canine passengers. ;-) Fun Fact: The ES has been built in Kentucky alongside the Avalon for several years. In a move to presumably create more space for RAV4 production in Georgetown, ES production will is soon be going back to Japan. Will that move make it a truer Lexus again?
And the es will go back to being just a glorified camry

On my Toyota hybrids, I lost a lot of MPG if I didn’t put on Michelin Energy Saver tires, and those tires were OEM size (very skinny). Wider and grippier mean worse MPG.
I’ve always been a fan of mid/large sized luxury sedans. However, I’ve not been too much of a Lexus fan until lately. I drove an ES350 F Sport and I absolutely fell in love with it. I’m 26 years old and I’m more interested in buying an IS500 or a wide body Challenger Scat Pack, but for whatever reason, I want to own an ES. I can’t say that about any of the previous generations. My spec would be ultra white with white leather and the blackline package like the one I drove. I can say I’m becoming a solid Lexus fan.

If I were in the market for a luxury sedan, the Lexus ES H would be fine. I'm after ride, quietness, reliability.
A shocker is if I really were in the market to buy, it'll be a Toyota Sienna, preferably the '21 hybrid for extra MPG. The minivan is my best answer now for transporting Disability Dave.

The daily driving sweet spot for mini vans is actually a Pacifca Hybrid with 30 miles of battery only range and +80 mpge is over double the Sienna Hybrid. The $7,500 tax credit just seals the deal!

Warranty is 10 YEARS but if you drive regularly it should go much, much longer.
Those Shrek ears still look so weird, and the AWD engine matching is simply crazy. The infotainment is simply outdated. Rear seating room is good tough

I put a wireless CarPlay adapter in my Lexus, very convenient. I think they will add it from the factory by 2025.
I crossed shopped the es and g80 in the 2021 model year. I decided to go to genesis, but there wasn't any available cars equipped the way I wanted it. Call me picky. Basically, I wanted the turbo v6, rwd. I'm not a fan of awd. I discussed ordering a 2022, but there was no rwd option. I then took a 2nd look at the es, and decided to order a 2022. I should have it in 2 weeks. Yes, I wish the Torsen lsd was an option, but everything else works for me.
I have a 2015 ES 300h I bought used in 2016 for $26,000. I now have almost 97,000 miles on my Lexus. The hybrid battery went out about a month ago and was luckily still under warranty, therefore it was replaced by the dealership for free! How long have you heard these cars run before any major issues? Thanks for your well organized description of the new ES.

Nice! I have a 2016 GS350 F-Sport & recently drove a 2022 ES300h as a loaner vehicle while my car was being serviced & I liked it more than I thought I would. It had good power & showed it was averaging almost 50 MPG where my GS is typically in the low 20's. It was the first hybrid I've driven as well. I also recently drove a ES350 which I didn't really like since it had too much power for a 300+ HP FWD vehicle. I'm sticking with my GS for now (I've had the car for only two years so far) but my next vehicle will for sure be a hybrid or electric.

The ES has a slightly longer wheelbase but I don’t think you’d notice much of a difference.
Luxury means decent ride quality, lots of amenities while getting great MPG and that is why I am trading in my Telluride for my new Sorento PHEV AWD. Telluride is so close to perfect to me but the 18 MPG average after 12K miles had turned me off a little bit....
Last Aug, I bought a 2020 Genesis G80 sport awd. Nice car in many ways, but with detractors, especially fuel consumption. I’m looking hard getting at the Lexus ES 300h.
Why not get an Avalon limited hybrid? You get luxury features lacking on the ES like folding seats heated rear seats passenger 4 way lumbar sequential turn signals and a better infotainment and gauge cluster
Weight balance of the AWD system and V6 might be too weird in the snow for shoppers; Japanese performance marries some lightness I’ve noticed.
If only the V6 came with the AWD option, it would have been a runaway
To get that you have to buy a used GS 350. I bought one. Smooth as butter and fast (0-60 in 5.8 seconds).

Of course if you are a regular Alex viewer you will know that he has some of the best reviews in the business, and he is spot on, this is a great bargain, why don’t you go and build a 530I with reasonable and comparable options, it’s going to be over $60,000. It will be a four-cylinder, of course different driving dynamics, and it really depends on what you’re looking for. Myself I would have a hard time choosing between the ES350 loaded and the G 80 2.5T prestige, I know the G80 2.5t Prestige is a little bit more expensive (4 k) with comparable options but I love the looks, it’s got a little more cutting edge technology, And I like the interior better. however. The Lexus interior has aged very well however and the new infotainment is a big upgrade👌💯

Why not get an XSE v6? Minus the adaptive dampers the XSE v6 is as close as you can get to the es f sport without the high cost of the Lexus

@@normt430 GM doesn’t have a car that competes with the ES anymore. CT5 isn’t a competitor and Buick is an SUV brand.
CarWow (Mat Watson) says the dash stitch on the ES is done by hand. Hmm.
Nothing wrong with this version of the ES, though I would really appreciate some quicker acceleration. If they could beef up the hybrid system to make it at least under six seconds to 60 that would be nice.

We have a 2018 CT6 2.0E plug-in with 432 lb-ft of torque that is 2s faster to sixty than the ESh. It sees 36-38 mpg after the 44 miles of battery us used up. We bought in 2020 with 575 miles on and did get federal tax credit. The night visions and HUD is just icing on the cake while the $38K cost us cherry on top.
Does under 6 seconds happen to relate to a real world experience that actually matters or are you all falling for this overused brochure metric?
I have a mid 3s car and literally never feel like my almost 8s 0-60 daily is too slow for practical use. Yes, even passing and entering the freeway.
If they just made a wagon out of this and called it a crossover like subaru does, then that rear headroom issue would go away and the cargo capacity would go up, also the sales would go up

This review confirms me that a basic Camry is an excellent value .
The least expensive Camry XSEh is still within $10K of the least expensive ESh. You'd have to compare features and packages of each to be sure.

I don’t understand why Lexus does not make this hybrid system have AWD. Also, I wonder why this trunk so much smaller than the platform mates Camry & Avalon hybrids. Hmmmmm.
Honestly the ES 300h should REALLY be considered for an upgrade over to the new NX 350h drivetrain - the ES and NX both share the TNGA-K architecture and I don't doubt that Lexus can shove an electric rear motor at the back and give it combined 240hp.
I agree and will go a step further. All Toyota's 2.5 AWD Hybrids, including the RAV4 and Venza, should switch to the upgraded (239-245 hp) system seen in the Highlander, Sienna and NX. Toyota would gain profit with uniformity of production and economies of scale while owners would gain extra capability without a sacrifice in mpg. While they are at it, Toyota can put that system into the new Corolla Cross to give it best in class capability and mpg right out of the gate.

The G80 might be a bit boring to drive compared to M/AMG/ S cars. It's far more dynamic than this ES. I wish Lexus had kept the GS. THAT was a dynamic car!

The G80 is "boring" because it is isolated and comfortable!! The G80 has much better tech, looks better, and has way more comfortable seats then this ES300h!

What do replacement batteries for the 300h cost? What type batteries are they and what is their life expectancy?
All Toyota hybrids now have a 10/150 hybrid-battery warranty. 10 years, 150k miles.
Pretty sure they are lithium ion. Toyota batteries last for about 10-12 years regardless of mileage. You can get 400k miles on a battery pack if it is within 9 or 10 years. In the Prius they cost about $1500-$2000 at an independent shop. This car should cost about the same to replace.

This engine is also being used in Indian camry.

I agree. Sofyan is a great example of that. Alex wants cars to be comfortable but also ultra fast like bmws. He said so in his last X5 phev review that bmw is combining the ultra luxury of Mercedes with the swift performance come to expect from bmw

The ES is a beautiful riding vehicle that excels in its purpose as a comfy cruiser. I have no problem with it being cosmetically sportier and not sporty in dynamics which isn't always good and it's something these journalists are so obsessed over with any vehicle. Even when reviewing a regular commute car like a civic or a corolla it's expected to beat a Ferrari.

Sofyan is horrible. I think automotive journalism has changed a lot. He spends the whole review talking all about what "he thinks" of a vehicle and what he dislikes and likes. Nobody cares about your opinion of how "you" want a car to be or care how it doesn't look good to you. A real car review is giving facts not your personal opinion. Looks inside and out and how you don't like it because it's not sport for your taste in not automotive journalism.
I’m with you on that! I think the “Sportier but still not sporty” thing is just for the thumbnail. In the video itself Alex does a great job appreciating the ES for the comfy cruiser it is.
I don’t understand the cabin noise part. ES scored 70.5 db and you gave it an A, yet an accord scored 71 and you gave at a B? Doesn’t make sense.

Yeah. I chose a Camry XSE v6 over the ES mainly because it has folding rear seats, a larger instrument cluster, and best of all an easy to use infotainment that wasn’t designed for a trackpad
I have 2019 XSE v6 myself, only wish waited few months got 2020 since had vented seats, I only got heated. I had a Lexus before and some parts if you don't buy from Lexus never fit right even from autozone.

The headlights are led actually. I think the high beams are halogen.
But fortunately the triple beam leds are available

The transmission in a Toyota/Lexus hybrid is definitely a CVT.
Please allow me to explain. The most common mistake people make in the "CVT debate" is that they misinterpret the term CVT.
The term CVT has nothing to do with the architecture or how the transmission works but what she does. In other words: CVT is the RESULT
of how a transmission works. I will clarify this with 2 examples:
First example:
The transmission with 2 pulleys and a belt (AKA the traditional CVT)
In short: the most common type of a CVT uses a V-belt witch runs between two pulleys, the cone-shaped halfes of the pulleys can move together and apart.
So that is how the transmission is built and how she works and the RESULT of that is a transmission with no fixed gears or steps but instead of that
a transmission with a variable gear ratio or CVT.
Second example:
Toyota/Lexus Hybrid Synergy Drive (AKA eCVT)
Very short ( because it's to complicated) : this transmission uses a complex planetary gear system with 2 electric motors- generators (MG 1 & MG 2)
integrated. The mechanical gearing design of the system allow the mechanical power from the ICE to be split in 3 ways:
- Extra torque at the wheels under constant rotation speed.
- Extra rotation speed at the wheels under constant torque
- Power for an electric generator.
Now that is the architecture of the system and how it works and it's completely different from the one in the first example with the 2 pulleys, you can't
even compare them.
But the RESULT is exactly the same: a transmission with a variable gear ratio or CVT( Continuous Variable Transmission).
CVT's are used in many vehicles even in bicycles ( NuVinci hub). And of course a CVT of a bicycle works totally different than a CVT of a car, but the
RESULT is, again , exactly the same: a transmission with a variable gear ratio or CVT.
Conclusion:
Every transmission with pulleys and a belt is a CVT, but not every CVT is a transmission with pulleys and a belt.
Bottom line the eCVT is mechanically a lot simpler

Not that I care very much about this car at all but surely Volvo has something that competes with this? FWD hybrid? To me luxury is always about nice things, which means comfort first, then not having to compromise and getting sport as well because you have money. I'd rather have a rwd phev mainstream car than a luxury brand anyway, but that's just a fantasy. At least I can ruin a 330e someday soon.

love a comfy ride than absolute handling, but not a big fan of ES. Would prefer Genesis for the same formula, but with RWD, better interior and infortainment, longer warranty, and more power. Always like the design of a Lexus but it lags behind just a little bit in some areas, which I think is unfortunate.
Don't really need a longer warranty when it comes to a Toyota/Lexus product tho. Mines at 57k now (2019) and only had regular maintenance. Zero issues 🤷🏽♂️. I will admit tech/infotainment could be better.
For a point A to point B people, which is most drivers, this is good enough.
The question is why not simply get a Camry or Avalon. Same reliability and comfortable ride for less money, only that a Camry will handle better.
It’s about looks I like the Avalon and the Camry bt compare to the es if we talking about exterior looks the Es is much easier on the eyes !

If it gets the 2.4 /2 Turbo Hybrid from new NX it'll be in 6 sec range that'll make it a real luxury sport sedan .
Um no it won’t. The nx turbo most reviewers got 7-7.3 seconds for the nx350. That’s mediocre imo.
Compared to say the old rav4 v6 that had 3 less gears, 70lbft torque less, the rav4 was still faster than the nx350
I would totally get a G80 over this Lexus (or any Lexus). The only reason to buy this is if you wanted a Luxury hybrid. But then again, Genesis just came out with a Plug-in G80 last year, soooo!

The old gs450h, the current LS500h and LC500h and RX450h and the last generation Highlander hybrid offer v6 hybrids.
