  • Did a bunch of cookies. Decide NOT to post times! Why? Because too much is "read" into those things. And I'm curious....can anyone really tell? TO the point they can REALLY say which of the saws performed bast? And what does that mean? Does it matter?

      @@whiskeytangofoxtrot9403 correct. Those saws were good enough like how they came of from the factory and they were reliable. Of course pro would buy a pro saw and that would be enough, modified work saws are just a fad and not necessary.

    Its funny but of all the saws I own and have built the 2 I use the most are pretty much stock. A mid 90s 044 and a 2014 562xp.
    As long as my truck gets filled with firewood thats good enough for me.

      Like you I like basically stock saws, too. I don’t punch holes in the muffler, add pop up pistons, drive them to 13,500 etc, just to get a second or two difference in cut speed. If I want that, I grab a bigger saw or sharpen the chain. I may apologize for a chain after I finish cutting but not before I cut the first chip. My chains are sharp as a razor when I start but dirt being what it is finds a way to dull them out.

    My saws will hang in with that yankee wood. Live oak is the hardest wood I have ever cut or split. I did cut some hickory that was pretty tough. It’s bark would throw sparks when you hit it with the chain. Not only is live oak tough but heavy, too. I also did most of my cutting in those days with a lot smaller saws than you boys. I used a Poulan 395 with an 18 inch bar and a Poulan 3800 with 20 inch bow. Both were pro saws with steel ball bearings and not that sleazy junk Poulan sells today. I still have my 35 year old Poulan S25DA tree saw. The only one of the “old boys” I still have. I actually traded it, too, but bought it back.

    Yankee oak ain’t the same as southern live oak. I never cut them down; I cut up blow Downs and turned them into fire wood. A twenty inch round usually took two of us to get in the truck. Splitting one of these rounds was tough. My maul would usually bounce right off the top. Often I had to light up a saw and cut an inch deep slot in the end and used steel wedges and my sledge to split it. Once you got it split the first time it was easy to turn into firewood. It made great wood for smoking meat. It gave them a great flavor.

    Does it matter? Not to most people, but if you're making hundreds of cuts a day, 6 days a week, 52 weeks a year, carrying around a lighter saw that does more work = more money in your pocket with less fatigue. So, yes, that second in a half does matter to some people. It could be the difference between paying the bills and not for some people.

    • @afleetcommand
      @afleetcommand  4 роки тому +1

      Yeah I've heard pretty much everything...:) AND to all those opinions my perspective is everyone will decide how to spend and rationalize how they invest...and it's all good. Not arguing the merits. Couple of things...I do build tweaked saw for a few, and most are their own one or two man deal, some who "sub contract" to larger operations. They love and use those saws, makes their day go by faster. BUT to the other company's with crews....they want NO part of modded saws. SO there is a message in there for those who can add and subtract. :) And if a few seconds times say thirty trees a day is the difference between paying the bills and not? You are in the wrong line of work. There are a lot of pro's who make a living with a stock saw. Unles you are like my "older" logger guy likes my twisted 372's as he ran 390's and 90cc saws for decades. AND doesn't mix up his day with skidding....others do that. He just cuts. Says my 372's will let him go another few years...so to each there are different priorities. But there are a LOT more firewood types even loggers who skid their own than that last guy I mentioned.

    Bob, I smoke pork to 165 degrees. My smoker runs at 200-250 and I have found a Boston Butt takes roughly an hour per pound. Normally, I smoke 8# Boston Butts about 8 hours. I use charcoal and chunks of white oak I have chopped up from biscuits/cookies I have cut from white oak. Hickory is fine but it leaves a stronger taste than white oak. I have two milk crates full of white oak chunks on my back deck. Apple is also good but don’t have any apple trees that I could cut down. Make sure any wood chunks you use is fully seasoned and dry.

    Talk about a cheap way to build a fire. Try splitting some wood and use it to build a fire.🤩. If you can’t do that, stack some wood and use some kerosene to get it going. I use a chimney to get the charcoal going for my smoker. It only takes some newspaper to get the chimney going. I then cover the charcoal with hickory chunks to use the smoker. I use my 17 inch Blackstone gas griddle to cook breakfast on. Just about every tree I cut down is overkill. Wouldn’t have it any other way.

    What better way to start my day than to watch a video by Afleetcommand because I have no Electricity.
    Thank goodness for my 3 burner Commercial Bunn Coffee Pot at least I was able to make my coffee with out going outside and starting a camp fire.
    Out of all my saws if I could only choose 2, I would have to take my Husqvarna 55 with a 20" 3/8 .058 bar and chain and don't give me any grief for this one an old Mccollough Mac3200 sporting a 14" 3/8 .058 bar and chain "not lo pro"
    Why these? Not because there fast but because there more than powerful enough, can tackle all but the way too big stuff and there light and easy to run and wont leave you feeling like a hundred years old at the end of the day.
    Electric is still off and now I'm hungry, think I will go outside and start a camp fire so I can have some Bacon and Eggs.🥞🐖🐓☕👍

    • @afleetcommand
      @afleetcommand  4 роки тому +1

      The 300 series has way better anti vibe :) I think the question is for the "Hobby Saw" type does it matter? And the answer is it depends....We spend a day swapping saws around and gabbing about saws so we wouldn't see the difference as much as a guy who runs it 10 hrs straight..efficiently. And really that's the point of this video. For so many of us, while the argument and over analysis is fun, in the grand scheme of things it doesn't matter as much as a saw just starting easy, running well, and being strong enough. And while for some the speed and power is the hobby, ( I'm guilty from time to time but not ALL the time ) for others it's the tinkering, still others things like brand history. To each his own.

    Bob, I think they are worthwhile. I have four of them, now - 660, 360, 361, and 440. The first three are doing fine. The last, I had to rebuild after it ate a circlip. My fault, I think. I hate circlips. I have the piston back on and have cleaned it up ready to reassemble, but it is just to damn cold outside for me to put it back together right now. I think it will be fine. The best saw out of the four is the 360. It has never had a problem of any variety.

    • @afleetcommand
      @afleetcommand  4 роки тому +1

      Yes those cir clips have that "long" tail, I cut them back to about .050in long in hopes they don't work their way out. I guess I never really had an issue with the 360 kit, I did move it along and the fellow running it hasn't reported any issues. I personally like the 660's best for the kits. Mainly because after learning how to build them and work past the issues as delivered, they have proven to be a solid saw. In my mind a testament to the base design! I never got the 361 right or the blue version. But also haven't spent the time doing the R&D, even the onliine R&D! Moved onto the 372 based kits & clone. They have been carnage with the exception of the g372. But not done yet so not ready to paint that picture. About ready to take a vacation on the 372 based AM stuff and go back to the 361's to see if they can be like the 660's 2.0

    • @johnclarke6647
      @johnclarke6647 4 роки тому

      afleetcommand my 361 is doing fine, now. I did replace the tank vent on the 360 with a Stihl vent, because you did but it was not bad. I just replaced it out of an over abundance of caution. I like the 360 because it is my lightest 60 cc saw. It has a 20 inch Total bar and LGX chain. The initial carb setting on all the kit saws, suck. I set them to about 1.25 turns out on both jets and tune from there. The carb on my 440 sucks. The choke butterfly likes to stay closed at half choke. I am going to replace it. I will shine up that butterfly plate, later. My 660 is doing fine and cuts like a dream with a 28 inch bar.

    • @johnclarke6647
      @johnclarke6647 4 роки тому

      afleetcommand someone on utube computed the lateral force the ears on circlip impose to the circlip and it was negligible even at high rpms. A greater problem is the metallurgy and spring tension of the circlip and whether it was bent or damaged during insertion. I also think the groove dimension is also very important. If the circlip is not installed perfectly in the groove it may come out. The critical one is the one on the intake side. After I got the circlips in I take an old wrist pin and insert it in the piston and tap it lightly to insure the circlip is seated as good as it can be.

    • @spike6020
      @spike6020 4 роки тому

    Soft pine my butt. How about water oaks? Even hickory is harder than maple and ash is soft, which is why they make kitchen matches out of it. Frozen wood can be tough if they have sap in them. The last maple I cut was 24 inches and it did not give me any problem with my H-455 Rancher. Actually, it was soft compared to white oak and hickory. The hickory I was cutting was so hard it threw sparks from the chain and smoked the chain on the 455 pretty quickly. I had to finish cutting it with my 360 and 660. All were running 3/8, .050, 72 chain, except the 660 which ran an 3/8, .050, 84 chain. All LGX chain, sharped before first use.

    them husqvarna from 80-90's are great saws, mine last forever. stock you cant go wrong, why make them cut 2 seconds faster then stand and have a rest. Better to plod on and cut more than rush and have to rest more. Nice vid

    Southern Live oak has a density of 1216 kg/m3; maple has a density of 600-750 kg/m3, so you tell me which one is harder. I have cut quite a few maple trees and they are about on par with white oak. I have never cut frozen wood. I try to cut wood when it is a tad warmer. 😀

      So it seems....I happen to really enjoy working this time of year out side. Spent several years as a teenager working on the family farm in Alabama. Clearing & Pulling fence line, hay, cutting pulp wood..... Sometimes wonder if the result is now I prefer these climates. Don't have to worry about bugs from October through to May..

      BTW we have Oak here as well, about 1/4 of the tree's on my place are Oak. I've been leaving them. Reason the Maples and Ash have been on the menu is first the "Ash Borer" and second taking out many of the "tapped" maples to allow the new growth w/o taps to take over. An investment for my kids.

      You could be/probably are right, although we have hickory (bitternut) which is more dense than hard maple and it is easier to cut, unless the bark on a big one has dried out, then the sparks fly, so I think there is something conditional to the properties of the wood in addition to density, probably more than one something.

      As a teenager earning money to go piss away racing dirt bikes, I use to spend time in Alabama running bow saws. For the pulp wood I was tasked with, they were tough to beat. Unique. And of course that's the point. Every place has their challenges and tools specialized to meet those challenges. BUT if we can have a little fun poking and starting discussion...that's the definition on win..:)

      Thanks a lot for the answer, Walter! I bought these days many tools from what I saw in your videos, Husqvarna and Stihl, they don't really sell themselves to individuals, but they sold me after all!

    You are right, Bob. You never do not know what you are getting from Farmertec. If I bought four deco valves, maybe two of them will work, as intended, otherwise I am holding my finger on the deco valve until it runs. Carbs and pistons are about the same way 50% failure rate. Walt, why don’t you get a metal detector and scan trees for taps, Mark them and cut out the section with taps. It is a lot better than eating up chains.

    • @afleetcommand
      @afleetcommand  4 роки тому

      Have one. Doesn't find those deep ones, mostly just the ones close surface. And those I can see where they are most of the time. Would take a very expensive one to find all the taps. And often I just cut the butt off the tree. A $20 dollar chain once a year or so is better than another $1000 on top of the $500 spent trying the concept, but I figured you knew that right? Just testing?..:)

      I understand what you mean John; always wondering if the good stuff to bad stuff ratio is going to make the order worth while. On a side note, what temp do you smoke meat at?
