- Whining gearbox, hard to get into gears? This might help. It might be time to check the gear oil and change it if necessary. I'm glad that I replaced the gear oil as I think that my whining gearbox is quieter now, it's definitely smoother and easier to get into gears. I discovered that the oil level was low and very dirty, I now know the condition of the gearbox and can monitor the level at a regular service interval. This video covers the gearbox oil change on a Mk 5 transit with MT75 - 5 speed manual transmission.

I have some oil leaking like you have in the gearbox and I wanna know how to clean the ignition or maybe I need to change the head gasket... But this van is the best... Slow and loud but strong... I go everywhere with the my van... Africa it was the best place 👍

If you’re loosing coolant could be head gasket but if not then most likely injector issues. They are simply the best van for sure 😆 I was thinking about getting another project but don’t think I could let this one go now I’ve spent so much time on it! I bet that was amazing in Africa. Did you get your van shipped there and travel around?
Have you tried any fuel additives? I heard that a small amount of 2 stroke oil is supposed to be good for the fuel pump and might help with the injectors.
I spent many years driving these and they were great, simple vans that did the job. Good luck with it

I did mine last year the old oil always goes dark it’s a lot easier if you use a large oil syringe to fill. Keep up the good work I have a mark 5 transit as well

Only problem with gear box oil is it stinks to high heaven and if you get it on your clothes u may as well bin them. Good video 👍

Thanx, just bought a 2003, 17 seater transit minibus to camperize.
So ive alot of work to do, but going to change the gear oil tommorrow ! So hope i find those fill and drain plugs easily.
Just tried today without success !! The drain plug position on mine is the same but there is no fill plug ,?? Cant find it ??
If it doesn’t have a fill plug you may need to take the stick off and fill through the top of the box.
Found it today hiding behind the slave cylinder. How ridiculous that there is all that space on either side of the gearbox but they put the fill plug behind something that obstructs view and access !!

Nice1. Just shopping for oil . Great vid many thanks for making:) ps also …if haven’t yet…cover over the gearbox inspection hole with some metal insulation tape the sort u used on insulation..Or Look for one off Sierra cortina maybe?! I think that hole is for clutch fork for a lh drive. Or an inspection hole. I will look on mine ( it’s a 150 btw not 190 as I thought) I am I awe of the hugeness of that rig!
thats normal for a transit van nothing to worry about
Try and fill that hole in that gearbox should have a big rubber cover in it nr that fill plug in gearbox have u ajust ed that clutch
I haven’t adjusted the clutch, has been like that since I’ve had it 🙄 I didn’t realise it had a cover to be honest👍 Will keep my eyes out for one or make something. Cheers

Hi I have a swb smiley,recently had a gearbox swap as old one sounded like it was knocking but went away when pressed clutch down or when you had done a few miles,got new second hand one in doing same thing but I have realised that the garage has used 75/90 cheap gear oil,also found old bottles of oil when I had old box oil changed and that was 75/90,but have been told they don’t use that which has been confirmed by you and your oil change also what you where useing is red like atf, just wondering if you know the viscosity of that it says MT75 is that what it is 75 no higher?looks like a thinner oil than 75/90🙂
Hi mate, on Facebook there is a mk3,4&5 transit owners club and they’re very good at diagnosing problems like this. Also, if you do a search for the MT75 oil it’s specifically for the 5 speed manual gearbox and is red in colour, more like ATF. If your not sure what oil it is that they’ve put in there I would change for the oil specific to the mt75 box. Hope this helps 🙂
Can you check the gearbox oil level?, or is it just a case you fill it up.
If you park on level ground and take out the full plug it should be filled to that level.
How many liters of oil did you put in, I have a 120 size model, a small one
It’s 1.25litres for the MT75 box 5 speed manual.

Ok fine, I flush mine but 1st and rear gear are difficult to pass.
I will try to put oil from the top, I can put more oil, so it may be better to pass gear
Have you tried adjusting the clutch slightly? Might help it engage the gears easier
@@TurnersWorkshop97 yes I try it, and also with excess it doesn't change anything. Oil in is 75w90
Mine is a 95vt, it's not very reliable
1.5 liter only
1.25litres for mt75 gearbox
