    It's really simple. The Canon T3i Rebel/600D for users more interested in film; the Nikon D5100 for people more into photography. If you want both, Canon T3i/600D all the way.

    In 20% of the things Canon is maybe better. In the rest 80% Nikon is definitely better. I did very extensive research and am super happy with the D5100 even after 2 years of use.

    They're pretty much the same. I both love these cameras. And I believe photos depends on the photographers not on cameras. Cameras don't take pictures, photographers do. Cameras are just tools. Just go around and enjoy taking pictures. Photography is really fun :)

    I know that this is an older video. But I've been browsing some photography videos talking about various lenses. Kind of crazy that the D5100 is now what...12 years old? I started with the D5100 and it's what I learned in college while getting my bachelor of science in Graphic Design. I still use the camera to this day. I even took it with me to Ireland in 2018 and got some amazing once in a life time shots.

    Look, I love nikon... but 600D obviously had superior color. Was it set to a more vibrant setting? If so, unfair review.

      No, it wasn't. I made my decision to buy canon based on this. Canon seems to have a warmer color whereas nikon is cooler. Some people might like that.

      +Truong Nguyen actually for the most part Nikon is known to have warmer colors and Canon is generally neutral tone. I think just in this case it was the opposite, but generally between the two Nikon has the warmer colors. I noticed it when I had a D80 and notice this with their full frame low cost DSLR's. The other exception to Canon is the 7D, it's very contrasty and not neutral

    I have used Canon and Nikon for the rest of my photographer life. And I found out the differences between the two. When taking pictures, Canon capture it so dramatic. While Nikon capture it with full of emotions, full of life. When it comes to video filming, Canon is the best thing you can use. Clearer and smoother than Nikon. Experiencing Nikon's video is not so good as Canon's. Better to use a phone's video instead of Nikon. Just saying'. But all in all, I'd say that Nikon takes pictures better than Canon. But still Canon can take pictures like how Nikon do, but in a dramatic way. But Canon takes videos and films way better than Nikon.

    Such great video! Thank you. Only now i way more confused.
    everyone recommend to buy the nikon D5100, but after comparing it to Canon camera i realized that i find Canon colors much more to my
    taste. The colors are more strong and deep, you can see way better the light and the dark areas in the picture. Nikon colors are very bright so the picture look very flat to my opinion.
    so i don't know which one to choose. any advice?
    please...

    The news was out Nov.6.
    The biggest improvement is the 24.1 effective megapixels.
    It could be out in American market in early 2013.
    The Nikon D5200 body weighs 505g and will be available in black, red and bronze upon its December release date. The Nikon D5200 price body only will be £719.99 / €899.00, while the D5200 price tag jumps to £819.99 / €1029.00 for the 18-55mm VR lens kit.

    I own the T3i and recently I had a chance to play with the Nikon D5100. At first glance they appear very similar, As soon as I grabbed the Nikon to check the swivel screen, it was lighter. The construction of the D5100 seems flimsier, the Canon is more solid. The free availability of Magic Lantern was the reason I went with the Canon. The two together make a film camera equal to those that cost $3-4000 or more, and the 4-2-0 luma / chroma ratio is the best you can dream of at this price.

    I started out with a T3i about 15 months ago, with almost no knowledge of DSLRs at all. But with a bit of advice from my dad, and about 2 hours of Kai talking about random crap, I have now progressed immensely, even to sell 3 photos (from my T3i) to shutterfly for a good amount of money. With that (and "some" extra) I bought a 7D, and i still often go back to my T3i.

  • @Digic6
    @Digic6 11 років тому

    What Kai says to pick is what he would use. Most people misunderstand reviews and get the camera they like. A review is basically a review of the cameras [hence the title] and saying the different priorities: take this for example, the Nikon D5100 can't change the aperture in video mode, while the Canon 600D can. If you're into video, the canon 600D is probably the better choice for you.

    To me, yes it is a good dslr camera for beginners to understand how to use dslr for their first time. I recently brought the 60d because i already know the basic on how to use ISO.shutter speed, and aperture. Plus it's my first dslr i own. So Yes i recommend you get the t3i for video/film with the TECHICOLOR cinestyle color grading to help you get that film look. Also with the cinestyle added to your T3i you can take photo's to help you get that nice color grading you want. Ask me for more Q's!

    I can recommend both for you, but It's up to you for the decision because it's what suites you.. :) the key factors should be:
    1. Price
    2. Comfort in the hands
    3. Ease of use..
    I have used both and I say that I really like them both, but for me I sealed the deal with a 600D because it fits my hand properly and the button placement is really nice for me, the D5100 was also a good camera, but I didn't choose it because I found the grip quite small.. but I did enjoy the experience..

    i used to be in ur situation, but finally i figured out the best choice for me.
    If you gonna shoot a lot of video, go for D5100 bc it has the flip-out screen which gonna come in handy when it comes to shoot at tricky angles
    If slow motion video is VERY IMPORTANT to you then go for the d3200 because it can shoot 720p at 60fps which is ideal for slow motion video.
    I chose the D3200 because i wanna get used to shooting without flippy screen and do slow mo videos(pro dslrs dont have flippy screen)

  • @Brisco1
    @Brisco1 12 років тому

    Probably more people would recommend a Canon. The image quality seems to be a bit better, but this may be a subjective call, as it could depend on the settings. Also Canon is known to produce a slightly warm image, if you like that, which I do. I'd try the two out in-store if you can, get a feel for the controls, then go with whichever one feels more intuitive for YOU, whichever one feels more comfortable to you. If you listen, the camera will speak.

  • @gaijinblow
    @gaijinblow 11 років тому

    Kai's point in this video is that they're both good cameras. The reason why his reviews are good is that he doesn't bring statistics into the mix, he just goes by what he feels and notices which is really the only important thing. Technically I think the D5100 is superior because it uses the same sensor as the more expensive D7000. But really, it's about the person taking photos. If you're beginning photography, you probably won't appreciate features that have trivial differences.

  • @ThePixelgrapher
    @ThePixelgrapher 11 років тому

    There is another thing to note about the noise handling. The EOS 600D is an entry level and the D5100 is mid range. So the results are reasonable.

    Just bought the 5100 brand new for only $450. The cheapest I could find the T3i new, factory sealed was $520 (plus tax on this one, so $565). $115 difference really helped make it an easy choice :)

  • @ibelieveinsumthin
    @ibelieveinsumthin 11 років тому

    D5100 has the same sensor as the D7000 , the D5100 handles low light images very well for it's price tag, the fact that it does not have an inbuilt motor is not something to be put off by as you can always focus manually and it's best to do that any way or to at least learn how :)

    The d5100 had one of the worst UI's when shooting video that I've ever used. You had to lock the exposure manually so it wouldnt auto expose, changing ISO is a bitch and the menus are a mess.

  • @Tenebrius1963
    @Tenebrius1963 12 років тому

    They will both be great, it just depends of the use you'll make of them. The gap you're talking about favors Nikon in this case... not a lot but it still has better ISO boost and noise handling, a tad larger sensor, more color depth and dynamic range. Canon does have a little more resolution and a built-in focus motor but for the price Nikon D5100 has more bang for the buck!

  • @FisheyWorld
    @FisheyWorld 12 років тому

    I record video with the d5100. it doesn't suck that bad. audio level adjustments? I use an external audio recorder, much higher quality than any dslr with a mic input. manual settings? well if you use ais, afd, or any lens with an aperture ring, you get control over the aperture. manual exposure for video? just use exposure compensation. sure manual settings for video aren't how they should be, but the camera is still just as capable. and the low light performance is better than the canon.

  • @GloriousForeigners
    @GloriousForeigners 11 років тому

    I have the Nikon D5100 and I love it, but honestly both cameras are really good so you will be happy with either. I would make a decision depending on which high-end camera you might upgrade to and potential lenses you plan on buying.

  • @DeckerFI
    @DeckerFI 11 років тому

    The biggest decider between these two is what range of cameras and lenses you want to commit to down the road. These cameras perform VERY similarly and are inexpensive. But switching over for your next body...
    That said, in this flat light Nikon's images look particularly flat. Mostly to do with Canon's aggressive in-camera lighting compensation and colour repro, I suspect.

  • @DavyBrando
    @DavyBrando 11 років тому

    Also if you're into film making the 600d is is fantastic. Make sure you get a nice prime lens and you're good to go. These SLRs have a natural shallow depth of field and if you muck about with the ISO you can get some choice low-light shots.

  • @AznAndrewPhan
    @AznAndrewPhan 12 років тому

    Well, you can pick base on nikon and canon performances. Nikon has a nice rich color(warm) that can be useful for taking great photos. While canon is great for filming because you can install the techicolor cinestyle for that great film look! Nikon of course has better overall quality of photo's while Canon has better quality in film/video. So now your thinking, what do i want photo or video?

    Usually, any one would say the Canon because of Auto+ mode, but as you get better, you will not use it any more and set yourself the aperture, shutter speed and ISO. I'd say to educate yourself right now on these things and get the Nikon instead of getting a Auto+ mmode you'd use for like 3 months. that was my opinion

    Thanks for the good info. Didn't really think about this, I have a lot to learn as a beginner. So far I'm leaning towards the D5100.

    If U R in Indoor (/wedding) fotografy go for Nikon. It produces soft, polished images.
    For Outdoor & Video, 600D have the edge over d5100. Detailing is obviously better.

    If you want a camera for video, get the Sony a57. It shoots 1080/60p. It also auto focuses way faster.

    i am 12 and use the nikon d5100. Its very comfortable and the tilting screen is useful for street photography as if you want to take photos of people its helps you to be more Deseret so that they don't freak out and stop concentrating on what there doing making they photo seem some what fake. It would be nice to have built in af also the flash is very annoying because if you turn it off auto and put it in off mode it will turn back on at random

    I bought both lol, used ones, first bought T3i and like it, then saw ocasion so bought that Nicon D5100 also used, now I try them both, and will decide in future which one to keep, so far I can tell that Canon's picture is more clear but not did yet much photos

    what seperates real photography from fake exactly? i was in the top 104 finalists in Nikon's High school and College photography contest shooting with a T1i. Actually, if I'm not mistaken, the winner was shooting Canon as well.

    Well, this proves the general key differences indeed- Canon as a jack of all trades with video lean, Nikon the master of stills and night photography. I personally went with 5100 since video didn't concern me nearly as much as better still quality.

    For those of you who have yet to make a decision, here it goes: the D5100 beats the 600D in lower noise at high ISO, better image quality, better battery performance, larger sensor, video autofocus, in camera HDR, more focus points, faster shooter, it's lighter, smaller, better color depth among other things.
    The 600D beats the D5100 only in megapixels, higher resolution screen, built in autofocus motor and slightly larger view finder.

  • @ReflexEight
    @ReflexEight 12 років тому

    D5100 vs T3i: Nikon has lower noise at high ISO, 20% better image quality, more dynamic range, better color depth, 3x faster in start up, has in-camera HDR, 10% larger sensor, automatically focuses shooting video, twice as many shots per battery charge, better boost ISO, smaller, more focus points. Canon has a built-in focus motor, 10% higher resolution screen, captures more than 10% more detail in photos and 10% larger viewfinder.

    Nikon D5100 will give u a great photographic experience if u r a beginner. Am using it for the last 3 months. Some more higher MP is not gong to affect ur photography as a beginner.I think it is more than sufficient for an amateur.

    Nikon d5100 is in my opinion a still tad bit superior to d3200
    But generally, if you're thinking about shooting video, making documentary etc, pick Canon.
    If video performance isn't prioritized but want to boost up the still image quality, pick Nikon

    Both of them produce essentially the same pictures, nether camera is better. You can't go wrong with either. Just choose what brand you like more. They are the same camera with a few differences in minor features here and there. For example The Canon has a better video-mode and Nikon has better low-light. But keep in mind the pictures they take are the same for general usage.

    I got the 600D, but I think it's a preference thing. I tried out both the cameras (and as someone doing it as a beginner for GCSE) although the nikon was a bit better at taking still images - more colour depth, and a general better quality, I prefered the hold and the grip on the canon. Also, I take a lot of videos, so that was a clear choice, and I found one that was very cheap. but they're both good

  • @Teh1AnnOwnLeeByukk

    It really boils down to personal preference for most cameras (What really matters is the lens). I chose Canon for most of my cameras (I got the Canon Powershot SX40 and t3i) mainly because of the warmer feeling to the photos. Nikon to me has a cooler feeling (I had the Nikon 3100).

    I am a beginner so please don't judge me but I believe that I like the 600d is better overall than the d5100 because the video mode i think is just much better. I am considering to buy the 600d because I think there are more cheaper lens for canon. Eg L lenses.

  • @swewunna

    I think there is no better camera if you compare like for like. Medium formats used to be better than full frames but the gap is small now with higer end full frame cameras. It depends on how much you can afford and how much you know about Photography. Cameras only play 1/3 of the equation.

    No That really doesn't have anything to do with it, all mega pixels are is a unit of measurement for the resolution. I would assume the better colors are from the DIGIC 4 image processor that the t3i possesses.

    Getting my self a traditional DSLR after having a Panasonic Lumix G5 as my first camera. Mirrorless is just way too low on battery life and high iso performance, excluding Fujis of course. I used both a Nikon D5000 and a Canon T3i and I have to say that Canon has a better grip. The Nikon's grip was just absolutely horrible. It was like trying to take pictures with a wet bar of soap. As for image quality, they're both the same. There's absolutely no point in comparing the image quality of both brands. Both brands, no matter what camera you use, will produce similar results. The only minor differences are high iso noise and dark current noise suppression on Canons, in which case a Canon 6d would probably outperform a Nikon D800 or D4s for astrophotography.

    D5100 is good for beginners and good for the money. Personally, i wish id have gone with the canon, for better video and better color management. But honestly, theyre not far apart. i have a d5100 myself. What you should do is find a friend with one of the cameras and borrow it for a day, and see how it feels to you

    Nikon for better quality for photo and decent film making, the lens on nikon is great and don't really need to upgraded them if you have too. Nikon lens are kinda a bit a money taker but if you really into photo that wouldn't be a problem. For Canon you would get better quality video/film because you can install Techicolor cinestyle. It's really great for that quality film look and also you can buy those cheap f1.8 50m lens for those low light situations! It's decent on photo but great for film.
