- www.cameralabs.... - Part 1 of a 20 minute comparison between the Canon EOS Rebel T3i / 600D and Nikon D5100 DSLRs. To see part 2, please visit Cameralabs.com by clicking the link at the start of this text - thanks! Gordon Laing
PS - I've just published a selection of T4i / 650D sample images at cameralabs . com if you're interested! The full review will follow soon!
I will be reviewing the 650D / T4i as soon as I can get hold of one. The review will be at cameralabs . com.
@WeShallNeverStop It's at the end of the video! It's around Queenstown, New Zealand... PS - for part two, just click the link below the video...
@subpoprec No problem, it was filmed around Queenstown, New Zealand. Please click the link below the video to see part 2 and more information...
@labotamizer Thanks! These videos do take a great deal of effort so I'll only be doing them for major and new launches - so no G12 / P7000 video, sorry! I did review the G12 ages ago though... but no Pentax products because they refuse to send them to me! Feel free to ask pentaxian1 to support me!
@SpazztikNinjaFilms Thankyou! This videot ook ages to put together... Make sure you see part 2 at cameralabs . com!
@globalarte Thanks, that was a fault at my end. I've corrected it now. The prices you'll now see for the T3i / 600D are indeed for that camera. Thanks for your support!
@highestcrown Thanks, it's always hard to find the right balance, but remember I always have highly technical stuff over at cameralabs . com if you're interested. As for the schoolroom, yeah, it didn't work so well for the audfio, sorry!
@ultraret Er, I have put a direct link to part 2 immediately below the video in the details section. That'll take you straight to part 2 on my website.
@rockstarzusa You're welcome! DOn't forget to check out part 2 at the link below the video!
@VideoMenu Thanks! When I look back at my first videos, I wince a little! Hopefully the newer ones are a bit more polished! PS - don't forget to check out my complete reviews at cameralabs . com!
Part two is at Cameralabs - just click the link below the video in the description text.
I've been searching for a solid review of these two cameras for a while now. Your review is by far the best.
@hofra01 Neither is better. It depends which specific features I've mentioned here are more important to you. If after watching both parts of the video you are still confused, then get either one!
@Androgenies That's very kind of you! The best reward you can give me (other than - ahem - shopping through the partner stores at cameralabs . com!) is to tell your friends about cameralabs and to follow me on facebook or twitter - cheers!
Sure thing, i keep an updated list of the models I recommend in the best buys section at cameralabs . com !
@HuwReesMusic Have you watched part 2 of this video at cameralabs . com yet? I'd recommend seeing that and also reading the verdict page of my D5100 review, again at cameralabs, it'll help you decide!
@johanneswingerlang Thanks! If you're on Twitter or facebook, please do tell your friends about cameralabs!
@100REALM Have a look at the results pages of my D5100 review at cameralabs . com - you'll see a direct comparison with the 600D / T3i there...
@irishdrummer85 Thankyou very much! This is the main source of income for Cameralabs, so by shopping for anything through thsoe links, everyone can keep the reviews coming!
@zainkam1 Thanks! I'm glad you find my vidoes and reviews useful! Don't forget I don't get paid for any of this though unless people actually buy things through the partner stores at cameralabs . com, so if you find my reviews useful and are ever shopping online for anything at all, please go to the support us page at cameralabs first to see if there's a store you're thinking of using! Cheers!
@irishdrummer85 You're very welcome! Don't forget you can support me by shopping for anything at the 'support us' page at cameralabs . com, or simply by telling your friends about cameralabs!
@154graciela I think I mentioned it at the end, but it was a Canon 5D2 with a 50mm f1.2 lens...
@SuperSerefsizPKK click the link under the video - it'll take you direct to my site were you can watch part 2.
@City0FDreams Click the link below the video and it'll take you to a page with part two on it!
@ladduro I did one on the GoPro HD Hero 2 only two weeks ago! PS - all my latest reviews are at cameralabs . com. I don't post to YT much these days as there's too many haters.
@anassleanass You're very welcome! Don't forget you can support me by shopping for anything through the support us page at cameralabs . com! It's the only way I get paid for all this.
@ApologiaTV Why would I mimic someone? There's no point in doing something the same way as someone else. What I offer here is a more technical alternative. But I do understand some people prefer Digital Rev's style. As for the locations, I thought it was more fun than just fliming in front of a plain white wall like I used to do.
@TheZaydeStation Do you mean why is there something furry on top of the camera that's filming? That's a wind muffler for a microphone.
@bsalightning08 I use whatever camera I am testing for Cameralabs
Thanks for the compliments! As for your video question, Canon DSLRs use the same bit rate for 720p as they do for 1080p, so there's no 'saving' on throughput. Any good Class 6 card should be fine for HD video.
@nilberg Thanks! Make sure you clikc the link under the video to see part 2!
@BOTx5 Thanks! It was done with the Canon 5D Mark II and 50mm f1.2L. In fact that combo filmed most of the video. You'll also see the small DOF of this combo in the Quiksilver store location in this video, and in the cinema in part 2...
There's lots of choices, but I have a guide to buying Canon or Nikon lenses in the lenses section at cameralabs . com.
@vinozorolla for the most information to backup the videos, you need to be on my site, and vimeo allows controlled embedding whereas YT does not.
@NscaleAmtrak Sounds like the memory card is too slow to keep up. Make sure you use one rated at Class 6 or faster, and that you also format it with the camera.
@Tuticrafts Thanks! You can use any Canon lens on a Canon DSLR, but remember all of them will effectively have their focal length multiplied by 1.6 times. So most lenses designed for film won't be very wide on a DSLR.
@ginostamaria I'm sure the folks at Rode wouldn't like to hear you say that! I used a Rode VideoMic Pro throughout this video. Sure, a lavalier would have been better, but I thought the on-location audio from a shotgun mic was ok...
@coolave007 Absolutely! You can either set it to Single AF mode, or switch the lens to Manual focus. Both will prevent the constant whirring.
@spakuloid Thanks! It was mostly filmed with a Canon 5D, although the jetboat segments were filmed with the 600D and D5100.
4 years ago I bought my first DSLR based on your reviews, and here I am again, watching you for advice on getting my second one. :)
D5100 is a great camera. The Nikon D5100 brings the high quality 16.2 megapixel sensor, great low-light performance, and full HD video.

Here's a suggestion. I just got this one myself

@britestube all my image quality results and comparisons are in my reviews at cameralabs . com
@tomaytemptation The E620 is getting on now and I'll be removing it from that section soon. I'd probably go for either the Canon 1100D / T3 or Nikon D3100 for a traditional DSLR, or consider one of the new mirrorless models like the Panasonic G3 or Sony NEX if you'd like something smaller. Or pick up an older Canon / Nikon / Sony DSLR from ebay or the like...
@Redzo79 It was a very echo-y room, which wasnt obvious when we filmed it. I thought the location was fun though, so kept it in...
I used a Canon 5D2 to film most of this, but the parts with the jetboats were filmed with the Canon 600D and Nikon D5100. Don't worry about spending too much money - have a look at the best buys section at cameralabs . com. But if you've got money to burn, by all means get a Canon 5D3 or Nikon D800!
@felipehenaovideos I know, sorry, I won't be recording in there again...
Well spotted! I actually filmed the jetboat segments by the river using each of the cameras on test. The intro that segment was filmed with the 600D / T3i. But then when I'm talking about the Canon at 7:30, I'm actually filming with the D5100, and when I'm talking about the D5100 a little later at 8:20, I've switched back to the Canon. Note for the rest of the video I used a Canon 5D2 for filming.
Yes, it's right below the video window in the description.
I'll try Rajendra, but please do check my best buys section at cameralabs . com if you're looking for a new camera!
@prettyspoken2007 you mean in the garden? It was the 5D2. Most of the video was with the 5D2.
Thankyou very much! Please do check out my complete reviews at cameralabs . com!
@UndergroundBerlin I think it would be a great first time DSLR, although if you don't need the articulated screen, wireless flash or movie crop mode, go for the cheaper 550D / t2i.
@streulpita Sure thing, just go to my 600D / T3i review at cameralabs - I've compared them on the verdict page
Hi Davina, all three have exactly the same photo and video quality, so your choice between them boils down to features, speed and price. I'd go for the 650D or 60D if you're serious about video as the flip out screen is useful.
I must say Gordon Laing is the best and most professional I have seen in delivering a review. He doesn't 'waffle' but gets to the point and at the same time has a pleasant manner. He produces the information in a concise manner both in speech and visual presentation. He pauses between speech to make it clear. He knows how to set up the visual presentation - he does it in detail so that he gives you close look at how the camera is gripped etc. Cameralabs should be proud of him - a rare find.
@Dasadorah From Canon, that'd be the 60D. But if you're open to other brands, Sony has some very fast models in its SLT range.
@valordk No, all the cameras are on loan and sent back after the review, so yes, Pentax's problem is just about making one available and shipping it for about 75 bucks. Proves how much they care.
@elishlomo The Nikon sensor is technically larger, but only fractionally so: it measures 23.6x15.6mm compared to 22.3x14.9mm for the EOS 600D / T3i. That's not enough to make any significant difference as far as my tests are concerned. What's important as you've suggested, is the number of pixels, along with the processing. This is all academic though, Just go to my D5100 review at cameralabs . com and you can see direct image quality comparisons between them and decide for yourself.
Yep, all of the Nikon 50mm lenses will work on full-frame FX and cropped DX bodies. I have a catalogue of lenses at cameralabs . com and I've stated there if they're compatible with full-frame or not.
@CeCDD2011 I will be reviewing it at cameralabs . com - got a big preview there at the moment.
@ron1111 Hi Ron, I think you may have mixed up the numbers. The T3i has exactly the same recording time as the T2i: both cameras can film for 29:59 OR until the file reaches 4GB in size. The file will reach 4GB in any of the HD modes after around 12 minutes. It's all explained in my T3i / 600D review.
Any DSLR will do for portraits, but the most important thing is to also get a nice bright lens so you can blur the backgrounds. You're looking for a 50mm with a small f-number like f1.8.
@Androgenies Thanks! Please tell your friends about my reviews!
@thumelen that's absolutely correct. It has a very small, but measurable impact on lens coverage and viewfinder image size. It's a tiny difference, but a difference none the less.
@Christoff87 Er, I thought I pointed out a lot of differences, especially in the movie mode in part 2, but yes many could be quite minor for average buyers. I wouldn't say the video was pointless though, otherwise I just wasted a week of my life!
One of the best if not the best video you have made Gordon!Im glad you started making video reviews again.See you on the forums.
Whoops, yes you're absolutely right. I was thinking of the 550D for some reason. The 600D, 650D and 60D all have flip out screens. Of the three I'd go for the 600D for basic video. If you want something faster and tougher for action photography, get the 60D. If you want something that attempts continuous AF during video, then go for the 650D, but don't expect miracles! If you're happy with fixed focus as you film, then the 600D will be fine.
No, the continuous AF is not fast enough to track fast action like that, so between them you may as well get the 600D.
@iamrolee Of course I do! They're quite a different operation, but I do like their style.
Good question! I was actually using the Canon 600D / T3i to film the Nikon and the Nikon D5100 to film the Canon during the river segment.
@xiongba Hmmm, thanks! I knew it was a mistake to film in HD...
This was filmed with a Canon EOS 5D Mark II, but the jetboat section was filmed with the two cameras on test...
I reviewed the GH2 ages ago at cameralabs . com - all my reviews are there. Only a handful are here...
@SmileySherief It's right below the video above...
All Canon lenses have built-in motors for focusing. All modern Nikon lenses also have motors built into them. But older Nikon lenses do not have focusing motors built into them, so they need a motor in the body to AF, which the D5100 does not have. So if you put an older lens onto a Nikon D5100, you'll need to manually focus it. But really this hardly affects anyone anymore. So long as you stick with Nikon lenses starting with AF-S, then you'll be okay.
I used a Canon EOS 5D Mark II mostly with a 50mm lens. But the parts by the jetboats were filmed with the two cameras on test.
Best review I've seen for these two cameras so far!
Thank you!
@ActualVideos Thanks! It was mostly filmed with a Canon 5D2.
@1p2o3i I'm waiting for a sponsorship from Destination Querenstown...! Weeell, all but the user interface clips were recorded with the same Rode Video Mic Pro, and most with it connected to a Canon 5D2, so the inconsistency is with the locations. I could use a lavalier - and perhaps should - but I like the immediacy of filming with a shotgun...
@onlineahmeds That's becuase it's winter in New Zealand where the video was filmed...
@Lumanix1 Thanks! The blue one was just grabbed in the Quiksilver store - wonder if they'd sponsor me?! The others were my own...
Thanks! I'm glad you like my videos!
I think the Canon live view works better for focusing star images and you also get the EOS utility for remote control over USB, so my vote for astrophotography goes to Canon. If you want to dedicated the camera to astro imaging you can also have them modified for broader spectrum response.
@NovaMains I sure was - great museum, unfortunately not so good for recording sound...
The 650D / T4i has better continuous AF, especially if used with one of the new STM lenses. But if you will focus manually while filming, it makes no difference.
@MRdiggs007 Yep, Cameralabs is based in Queenstown... see my latest video of our Queenstown photowalk!
I own a Canon t31 and the Nikon 3200. I am in love with the Nikon. Its amazing. I love shooting night photos and figured the 3200 would lack there, hasn't at all. I have nothing bad to say about the T31. If I had to recommend one though I'd say the 3200
I am happy that you brought back all your videos on YT again. I wish you a greater viewer base this time.
i'd just like to say thanks for all the reviews you have done. they're fantastically well spoken and give me more information than any other reviews on the net!
All of the Canon 50mm lenses are compatible with both full-frame and cropped bodies. In fact the only Canon prime lens which ONLY works on Canon cropped bodies is the EF-S 60mm macro.
Hi Gorden...
In my canon 600d the captured image on the lcd screen appears very late.
This gets me annoyed because i cant shoot images very fast when capturing from the LCD screen...
What might be the problem,is it related to the memory card which i use..??
PLEASE HELP :(
Hi Gordon, in this review at around 7:30 mins in to the video you switch the cameras and there is significant change in the picture color quality (your shirt color changes drastically).Although this question might sound silly, can you tell us what camera you were using before and after 7:30 mins in the video? Why is there a huge difference in color saturation? I am trying to decide buy one of these two cameras. I prefer better color contrast and quality in my images, which one would you suggest?
Thanks Gordon for your swifty reply, the 600d also has flip screen but would you still recommend the 650 and 60?
Read what you like into it, but believe me after 20 years of professional journalism, any bias I had has long gone. It doesn't serve you well in this career. As for filming it with a Canon? Well, that's what my friend who filmed it uses, and the 5D2 / 5D3 are widely regarded as the best DSLRs for filming video. So it's nothing to do with bias!
Hmm, I'll get one of these in few days. just need more clarification, @cameralabs which do you prefer when it comes to still pictures alone? discounting the video side. and also, 600d has built-in focus motor unlike d5100, is that big factor since most lens from nikon has an auto focus in it?
@goldenguy12345 if you like filming, 600D is the one to pick.. the articulated lcd screen will help and the video result won't be less than 550D. They both use same sensor, so practically similar result, but 600D has more features
Mr. Gordon, I really like how objective and creative you are on your videos. I've been reading and seeing reviews about these two cameras, and I'm not so sure what camera could be the best for me, this will be my first reflex and I'm pretty sure either one would be a great choise
@TheHickstead It should say at the end of the video... but it was mostly filmed with a Canon 5D Mark II and 50mm f1.2L - but that's because that's what the guy who filmed it owns.
I hope you reply to comments, i need help choosing between the Nikon D3200, Nikon D5100 or the Canon 600D?
Wow your reviews are really amazing but I'm not surw which one to pick..
I love everything about the canon T3i but the grip is just...it feels "cheap" like not safe in my hand.
Also, I'm just starting on photography and I think this one would be really good.
But I have a question about lenses, can I use lenses from the cameras that used film? or can I only use lenses from the new canon cameras?
