baby john (and probably current john) evaluates himself and his performance so intently and judgmentally, it’s relatable but sad to me as another person with a lot of anxiety. i also love the way he’s kind of embarrassed but tries to seem confident in front of his friends, it’s adorable and also very relatable.
You hit on something that struck me as I watched this video. It almost felt like a "behind the scenes/making of" episode; the care John has taken in crafting his set is obvious, as are the bits that are still personal to him. I love seeing the satisfaction on his face when a joke lands just right. There were a few moments where I could see the contrast between him using autobiographical material for a bit in front of an anonymous audience, and being in a room with a few friends who are perhaps learning something new about him.
this is really common with anyone who makes anything- watching your own stuff is always really uncomfortable because you're always seeing the ways you could've improved. it's not anxiety as much as it's like, this is an extremely uncomfortable situation to be in.
I feel like if you invite Jeselnik to provide commentary you get exactly what you deserve. Also, what an honor it would be to get roasted by Jeselnik for 13 minutes straight.
I cannot imagine anything more excruciating than sitting through your own special with some comedians you admire absolutely ripping it to shreds, but God does it make for good entertainment.

Honestly I love Jeselnik, Gervais and guys like that. I love witty, dark humor. But John is my favorite comedian not despite but because he can make me laugh without some dark Punchline, without making fun of anybody but himself (or nobody at all, which seems even more difficult), just beacause he is so incredibly charismatic and naturally funny. I can see him doing dark humor, as many comedians do, but I can't see it the other way around, which makes him incredibly unique and talented. Still loved seeing him get roasted though.
