Helen loves cats that wasn’t the issue at all. johns writing translates brilliantly past his stand-up material- he wrote for SNL first and has since created Oh, Hello, several episodes of Documentary Now!, and numerous other random scripts. the writing for Mulaney wasn’t its biggest issue, the concept was just awful, which is fine. doesn’t mean he doesnt have what it takes.

I think they're deliberately imitating Jim Carrey! In recent interviews, he hits a lot of the same points - tantric sex, talking about existence ("are we even here at all?")b, strange coffee, spacious and luxurious life as a burden, casually mentioning being sober... I wonder if this is intentional, or if they are just making fun of a stereotype that Jim happens to follow closely.
