      Never mind I found them! But the Princess Diaries video doesn't show up even if it is typed in search. I only found because it was in my likes, and the Cruel intentions video doesn't even show up even on your page unless it is typed in.. Not sure what UA-cam is up to....

      Legit, though, I actually experienced this crap in real life! I never had a boyfriend before I was 20. Only dudes I wasn't attracted to liked me. Then I cut my hair and got contacts, and suddenly dudes were like "nice!" I didn't even change my clothes or start wearing makeup. Then again it might've been that not wearing glasses anymore made me feel more confident...

    My favorite joke in the movie is a really stupid one. I love when she paints a couple stick figures and Chris Evans goes “Who’s she?” and it triggers a whole “emotional” scene talking about her mom while just showing these stupid little stick figures. This is why we need Coming of Age movies for black kids about just being black kids. The ones I can only think of that don’t include systemic racism struggle and where the main character. Is just another girl in IRT and Dope. Not perfect but there the only ones we got. Hopefully we have black directors and writers tell stories of black teens in a positive light.

I think it’s one of the first black girl coming of age story I ever watched and I was mesmerized. I think Drumline could be included as well even though it’s they’re first year of college.. I know we don’t have a lot of black coming of age stories but we shouldn’t ignore the ones we do have, and we definitely need more in the future.

      Yes so true. Like actually just fun teen films. They’re normally always about drugs or gangs and often only got black people in it with one token white but they should do it where the main character is black but the story stays the same. It’s still silly and fun. Just a normal teen/romcom/chick flick movie.

Right down to the beginning when Zack looks at the picture of himself on the wall, all I think about is Jake looking at his picture and then immediately going to another wall to look at himself looking at the other picture from before, lol. Or the 10 Things I Hate About You moments, with the friend (can't remember his name) naming all the things he loves about Janey and it's just weird and creepy and of course the Janey's Got A Gun scene! They did well because they actually watched the movies they were parodying while having an actual story line. Scary Movie legit had a mystery serial killer they had to solve, it was just set in a universe that made fun of teen slasher film tropes. NATM managed to have all the tropes tie into the story in a comedic way and managed to somewhat subvert expectations and every joke had a payoff by the end of the movie. All the other parody films just copied scenes from other films and didn’t put any effort in it whatsoever. I will say though that Date Movie is one of my guilty pleasures and I will defend it to the end 😂😂

    Perks is still great to me as a 'teen' movie, but there was some really hard hitting content in the book that they either toned down or just completely omitted for the film so that they could IMO fit the nostalgic teen movie archetype more, just with their own twist. Agreed. Felt the same way about the film adaptation of "Me and Earl and the Dying Girl". The film was very well done and enjoyable, but could not compare to the emotional impact of the original book. It's so straightforward and unsentimental and brutal in a way that most adult fiction never gets close to being, let alone YA content. I understand why they didn't include it in the film but I felt a little cheated when they went with a more feel-good approach

    • @reikun86
      @reikun86 3 роки тому +3

      I get what you mean. I think Perks is an important book, and I thought the movie was made with love, but I know some of the stuff you're talking about was left out to make it more palatable for teen movie-goers. If I remember correctly, it was Emily Watson's first film outside of the Harry Potter films, so I can see the studios deciding to tone it down to get butts in the seats.
      Which is an interesting move, because Harry Potter dealt with death, depression, anger, racism, and genocide. Those themes are not exactly fluffy.

    I've wondered for so long why more of those high-school based movies with super adult themes aren't just made about young adults. like I get maybe they're trying to capitalize on a high-school age audience, but I'd argue the college/post-grad market is bigger and has more money/time to spend anyway.
    plus it does feel kinda weird being in your early/mid twenties and watching tv and movies about high schoolers. I reckon most of us would rather not have to relive high school every time we wanna watch a good drama like euphoria or elite, and I agree w you that I'd much rather watch something I can relate to as a twenty-something, trying to find my purpose, make a living, get my life together, build relationships outside of school, etc. I know there are already excellent shows like that (girls, insecure, broad city to name a few) but I just feel those storylines are so much deeper and interesting to explore, and way more rooted in reality than a bunch of 16-year-olds committing murder, taking drugs, drinking in clubs as if there isn't an age limit, etc (also can we pls stop romanticizing that lifestyle for teenagers? thanks)
    on a separate note I rewatched this movie like a year ago for the first time in a decade and totally forgot chris evans was in it. 100% agree he thrives with comedies

    NATM is a bit similar with Austin Powers, in that they were parodies that so effectively parodied the genre they were going after that it forever changed how movies in that genre were made. According to Daniel Craig, the reasons that his movies are so much darker and grittier than previous Bond movies is because Austin Powers absolutely shredded every trope used by the earlier movies to the point where they could never make a Bond movie like that again.

The whole "getting into a good college" and having "the college experience" trope is annoying. I think Community is the only show addressing this, but it'd be nice to see more characters in a trade or health career rather than a glamorized office job or yet another drama about doctors (medical assistants and CNAs can have interesting storylines too if you let them!)
