Iambic Keyer and Technique. CW Morse Code key

- The speed is 185 ch/minute (40 wpm), but it's just a demo to show what is possible with the iambic technique (of course, it's not a limit for some people out there). I don't think it's a practical speed for everyday, however, iambic is quite comfortable with much less speed.
There are 4 dual-lever paddles on the video. You can use all of them to make 185 ch/minute, because it's hands that make it, - not paddles. However, there are such criteria like comfort to use, durability, design and style.
MFJ-564 (Bencher has the same kind of a paddle).
"Made-in-China-quality paddle".
The contact arms and thin plastic plates are springy. When you make a touch, your finger makes additional motion. It's very uncomfortable, imprecise and loose. And the whole design is poorly thought-out. The screws don't hold, so they need adjustment constantly and you need a screwdriver for it.
Because of the low price, it's usually the first paddle that beginners buy. Don't make this mistake; otherwise you can start hating CW before you master it. You do not want to spend even 30 Euro to be frustrated right away.
Schurr Profi II.
It was designed by Gerhard Schurr. Today these paddles are made by the Schurr's successor Uli Scheunemann (it's his copy on the video).
The paddle has a distinguished elegant style, which is a trademark now. It's even used in advertisings. The paddle has only 3 adjustment elements: two large knobs for contact spacing and one for spring tension. At the first glance it looks strange, but this simplicity is possible because the paddle is perfectly balanced. The contact screws are so tight and so precise that you can adjust it to a minimal, almost non-existent contact spacing and the paddle will work as a touch-sensitive paddle. So, you don't hear the clicks at all, and the contacts do not stick. Virtually, the key never needs to be readjusted. The key has 1,5 kilo in weight and it's is very stable on a table. The cable goes inside the lacquered brass base, but it's replaceable of course. Overall, the paddle is a masterpiece of engineering and it's my choice.
Begali Signature. Expensive toy, but to me it was a bitter experience. I have heard only favorable comments about this key and decided to buy a copy. The mechanism overall was very inaccurate and carelessly made. The contact arms were loose. You could move them up and down and even from the contacts! This was the reason of a strong contact bounce. While operating, your fingers felt spurious responses: tinkling, jingling etc. It seems like the inner parts were made with a very high tolerance. Also, because of this inaccuracy I had to make wide spacing, otherwise the contacts stuck unpredictable.
But it is a very beautiful paddle with magnets instead of springs for the return force and the optional gold-plated contacts. The finish and style are superb.
Moreover, the money back service (I've returned it back to Begali) was personally oriented and accurate. So, you can try it out, maybe my copy was an exception. And if you are not satisfied, the money back service of the manufacturer is irreproachable.
KENT. Also, a well known paddle. It's worth buying a kit of it - costs 10 euro less and even a child can assamble it during 15 minutes.
The bearing block with the contact arms is sturdy made, no looseness at all. It weighs 1,4 kilo, enough for a good stability . The spacing is controlled by the contact screws with the locking nuts and it allows a soft touch. The spacing between the paddles is too wide for me, but this can be a matter of habit. Overall, the paddle is a reliable workhorse. If we take the price/quality relationship, this paddle is probably the winner here. If I didn't have the Schurr, I would use this one. - Спорт
4:37 My deepest respect to anyone who can either send or read Morse code at that speed.
I was about to say, is that Morse code or a teleprinter?
Too much of an echo to decode properly. The slightest reverb makes it so very difficult because each character is not clearly defined.
Thank You GM4NNC
It's like a morse code auctioneer! I'd have to record it in high speed and play it back in slow motion to be able to decode that!
I used a single paddle for a long time before I finally drove myself to learn Iambic. It made me crazy. But, of course, it is now all I can do (and well worth the effort).
Wow! Amazing! I love the last minute of the video!
I really enjoy your video. I am trying to mimic the shortcuts you show and maybe will help me become proficient at cw. I have the schurr profi 2 and Begali signature and a Kent single lever paddle and as you've pointed out my first paddle was a mfg 564B. I am trying to give a real go at cw now that I am putting my antennas up again. Thank you very much for sharing! 73's P43RC
I'd attained grade 1 in sending n receiving while still working in the police force, but using lambic key is new to me. I've got to train myself for that. I used to send morse code using the vertical key.
what a great loss in your touch and your operators and non amateur operators you are truly a gifted man thank you for the lesson you are a patient man happy New Year to you and yours your best friendN2HGL
One day i will own a kent paddle.
I'm pretty sure I heard an "E" in there somewhere. :)
The second keyer in the video is absolutely beautiful. I have never seen that model and would love to own it.
That is a Scheunemann Morse Dirigent twin paddle keyer
Holy crap that's fast! 😮
Amazing Speed
спасибо, товарищ.
Thanks for the tips. First, my ears don't decipher at 40 WPM. With more practice I can hear 40 - 45 WPM for contesting. My brain is geared at a certain format not a common sentence. I typically key with the dah by thumb and the dit by index finger. I need to relearn and try your squeeze method rather than my slapping method. It will take much practice so I can be ready for 2018 Field Day. Some times I need to hold my key down with my left hand because it tends to walk across the table. If I remember to bring my key and not use my radio club's key then I have a square of shelf foam to place between the table and my key that greatly reduces the 'walking key'. Best 73
I've recently become interested in morse code, it's the only thing I text with anymore!!
Great video! But I'll stick to a straight key for now till I get back up to 20 gpm - It's been 25 years since I last used it.
wow, nice skillz :)
Dots on left dashes on right is conventional. However if the sending is good don't suppose it matters. Oh hi Frank saw your comment :) g4kki
I saw that too. Seems odd.
Very nice
cool stuff
Awesome!!!!!!!
If you ever hear my station sending code that fast, call a doctor because I must be having a fit... When I hear code that fast on the air I always think it is an electronic box or computer sending... I have never seen someone go that fast with my own eye... I can only dream of speed like that...
This speed is grown naturally on you, if you start learning CW in the Soviet school as a child...:) So, it's not a big deal. But if you want more, you have to really practice, because the next step is possible only if you convert a hobby to sport. I was to lazy for that....:)

that key used in the demonstration? yy5mki 73
sending is way easier than receiving. never heard anybody sending that fast not even on contest.
I have a problem with pressing too hard and the paddles slide a bit
Try loosening the spring tension. Or scarify the paddle feet so they can grip the surface of your operating bench better.
cool
holey schmoley that's fast!
First of all let me say that was an outstanding great review. I But I would kindly like to say something. At the end when you were sending code at light speed, I am assuming that you will be sending code to someone who is using software or other device to decode and write that down because I truly and seriously believe there is no human alive that can write that down that fast even if they were masters of morse code. I am a believer of the Farnsworth method of giving a little bit more time between letters and words. You may want to look his technique up. I like to decode leisurely and enjoy it. If I was trying to write down decode at that lightning speed I would probable have to drink 6 cups of Starbucks strongest black espresso coffee with 2 extra shots caffeine in every cup to try to keep up and then doubt it could be done. As I said Kindly sent because your review was really really outstanding.
"I truly and seriously believe there is no human alive that can write that down that fast even if they were masters of morse code." There is a sport, called "High-speed telegraphy". The sportsmen get different ranks. The MINIMUM speed for the Master of the High-speed telegraphy is to WRITE DOWN 180ch/minute (50 blocks of 5 random letters each with 3 mistakes max.). They don't write it down in letters, but in shorthand (s. wiki) and then rewrite it into actual letters for the referee. I've met people in my life who could write 200 ch/minute down. However, putting a text down in shorthand is a special ability that requires additional training for those sportsmen. So, practically they master both tasks: hearing AND writing. In other words, there are people who can hear and understand 300, 400, 500, 700 and even 800+ ch/minutes, but they can't write it down simultaneously as the sport "High-speed telegraphy" requires. What I want to say is that there are people who don't need software or other devices to communicate with the speed that you hear in this video. They kinda talk with the Morse code without putting that on paper, same as we don't write anything when we talk with people in everyday life.
Well you could knock me over with a feather. I had no idea they were such people in this world. I would think somebody like that would be about one and 10,000. Unless they are in some kind of competition I don’t think it has a place in normal conversations of CW for the general ham radio operator. But that’s just me. But I have to tell you I really enjoyed your review and I really enjoyed your response by telling me there are actually people in the world they can do that. It just boggles my mind that there are people that can do such Thanks. I wonder where I could find a list of them. And exactly where do they hold these contest I would kind of like to watch somebody right that fast. Of course I would first like to get me a bag of popcorn and a Coca-Cola to watch the show. 😁
@@docpearson The high-speed telegraphy sport was very popular (for both very young and old people) in the "pre-mobilephone-era", till the end of 80s. Today, for the fun check this: www.rufzxp.net/ The official record is 943 ch/minute. Of course, you have to hear just one call-sign, not a text. But it's still outstanding, what a human ear can do...:)
Aren't we using the key opposite way around. Brilliant keying but ... dits on left and dahs on right? Only I could send like him.
we discussed that earlier. The opposite way is not right (or wrong), it just came from the tradition of sidewinders ("bug" key). When folks started changing from sidewinders to iambic electronic keyers, they just transferred their habit. I learned the other way just because I've never heard about sidewinders and never used them that time. I changed to iambic right from a straight key. The thumb for dahs seems more natural and logical to me, because a forefinger is quicker and more flexible then a thumb. So, it's normal to use a forefinger for dits and a thumb for dahs. However, again, it's not right or wrong. It depends exclusively on your first teacher...:)
You could say, this is Europe. They drive on the opposite side of the road than usa. I won't say hi hi. Lol. Whatever works for him, then so be it. I strive towards sending words, than spelled out words. Another words, I wish I could send as high speed as he does!
You have the dots and dashes the other way around! Dots should be to the left and dashes to the right
Read my comment to Frank Garrett below, please.
***** "Dots should be to the left and dashes to the right" Why SHOULD they? One's preference is 100% one's preference, and there is NO ONE RIGHT WAY. The RIGHT way is the way that works best FOR THE USER. The "custom" of having dits and dahs only on a certain side for everyone comes from an anal compulsion to slavishly copy Vibroplex's bug pattern.
***** You are absolutley right, the paddlefunction is all up to the user, my misstake. It's not wrong it's just not configured the usual way.
+SM7FBJ I learned with dots on the left and dashes on the right but when you think about it if your right handed the thumb is the heavy it might just work easier with it configured the way you have it. I may reverse polarity on my paddles but it would probably be really hard to relearn it that way. I never used a bug I tried couldn't get the hang of it LOL the gold key is a Shurr whats the gold one with black base?

Great keyeng. Should be grateful if someone send me an iambic paddle

O wish buy the Kent, do tou salé ir?

2:30 the action in this video doesn't seem synchronized with the sound
+Jeffrey314159 If you look close on the first push, it's synchronized. But the speed is slow, that's why the dash lasts a fraction of a second longer after I release the finger.
