Nobody had a problem with Phil. Except his wife. Really sad how nice people make a few poor choices when it really matters, and it affects the course of their lives
I love the absurdity of that sketch, but it's so true. I mean, if you were an unfrozen caveman, of course you'd want a Porsche and a Rolex etc. And what better way than become an ambulance chasing lawyer.
Phil Hartman was a truly gifted performer. He was also a hugely talented graphic designer. His album covers for America, Poco, and Steely Dan, among others, are absolutely iconic. If you are unfamiliar, it is worth a bit of research, it's pretty amazing. To think that he had such a complete career in that discipline before he became an SNL cast member makes both more impressive. RIP
Phil Hartman was my favorite cast member from SNL from the late 80s / early-to-mid 90s period, along with Jan Hooks - just a once-in-a-generation talent. In recent times, Cecily Strong has a similar sensibility and range, though she just moved on from SNL to greener pastures after a lengthy tenure.
It's easy to get caught in moments where you compare cast members or one season to another, but when you can sit back and look at a career away from the hype and emotion, you can truly appreciate a talent.
This is the first time I've seen/heard Jon Lovitz when he's not in-character (I've seen DVD commentaries, interviews, podcasts, and he's always been "on" in all of them, except for this). I've heard from other SNL alums that Hartman and Lovitz were best friends, so it's nice to see that authenticity in this clip.
Hartman had the rare trait where the moment he said or did anything, it was funny. His presence was funny. Not many have that. Gene Wilder, Tracy Morgan, Jerry Stiller, Wanda Sykes, etc.
It's weird, you don't hear about Jon Lovitz much but EVERYONE in comedy seems to know him personally and respect him. He and Dana Carvey are similar in this way.
Jon Lovitz might have just given one of the best insights into Phil Hartmans character and talent. Plus, you can tell he really loved his friend and I’m sure misses him.
I love you John lovitz 😅 I had to explain to someone much younger than me how Jon was married to Morgan Fairchild! The whole bit. He watched a lot of videos and approve 👍🏽
Canada’s award for its best comedian is called the Phil Hartman Award. With SCTV, Kids in the Hall, Norm and so on, nobody has or will ever argue the name. As funny as any human that ever lived 🙌🏻
documentary maybe, not a dramatisation. too tragic at the end. I don't think his kids need that to exist. they were home when his wife had a psychotic break and shot him, then herself.
@@MobiusBandwidth you could downplay the ending, not get real graphic. Maybe her going into the room, then go straight to a news reporter reporting on what happened. I was more takking about his life and success before he got famous.
Phil Hartman made every film he performed in better. Top of the list must be Jingle All the Way and Sgt. Bilko. His Troy McClure voice and ability to identify the stupidity in characters shone over his cast. Thanks for the memories Phil Hartman 💕
It says a lot about lovitz that when it absolutely can not help him in any way to burnish the reputation of someone else, he consistently does so. he's a class act, as was hartman.
One could easily argue for Phil being the most talented performer on the show all-time.
Easily top 3, Eddie Murphy up there too
Whenever Phil Hartman was in a sketch, you knew it was going to be funny. He had a knack for holding the switch together.
Absolutely...Phil Hartman was definitely the best "actor" the show has ever seen.
They called him The Glue
No argument....Phil was the best of the best
Very nice. You could tell Jon really loved and respected Phil.
We are all so lucky to have had Phil Hartman grace our lives with his talents.
Lionel Hutz was one of the best Simpsons characters ever. I wish Phil was still with us
Not to mention Troy McClure!

Hartman is the only comedian to make me laugh so hard I cried ..Colon Blow will forever be his greatest skit for me ...that shit is classic
You would have to eat 10,000 bowls.
lol i love that skit!!!
Written by Al Franken.
I see what you did there...
Damn straight!
Hartman was a genius.
Straight up, undeniable.
Phil is such an interesting person. I’m always down to hear a Phil Hartman stort
Phil’s Sinatra impression was easily the best one ever.
Comedically.
"The lady is a shoe" 😂
Dead
And his Bill Clinton was classic
"Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer" was genius. Caveman's affliction signaling combined with his openly false modesty was spot-on societal commentary.
Nobody had a problem with Phil. Except his wife. Really sad how nice people make a few poor choices when it really matters, and it affects the course of their lives
That is interesting, huh?
the course of history really, imagine what else phil could’ve done for comedy
I guess if he made her laugh in the later years, to her it’d just be a bitter reminder of his talent, talent that she lacked.
Poor choices related to women are so common it's cliché.
That’s all of us. Think about it.
great in everything he did. he's sorely missed.
Phil hartmen definitely one of my favourite, the regan evil genius is one of the best sketchs
Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer is one of the best sketches.
"He used to be a caveman...now he's a lawyer...Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer!" I love just how crazy and simple that is.
@@brianjl7477 - "I'm just a caveman...."

Wow!
Phil is deeply missed.
Great to learn this about him.
Thanks Jon, and Howard!
I wish I could watch this whole interview bc lovitz is a great storyteller and Howard is actually letting him speak!

Loved him. Such great talent. Rip.

Unworldly gifted.....unimaginable end....RIP
Wow thanks Howard,,for letting him talk
Tragic. Gone too soon, way too soon. Still missed.
Jon is a great interview!
Phil Hartman was the GREATEST cast member of all time.
Jon Lovitz is truly the future of comedy.
Reagan Mastermind is my favorite SNL skit ever.
Former Reagan aids said that was the closest anyone ever got to his real personality behind closed doors.
Jon and Phil are two of my favorites of all time.

If you haven't heard it Jon Lovitz's commentary on his SNL Best of DVD was pretty sincere and personal I thought... One of my favorites actually.
Hartman had the rare trait where the moment he said or did anything, it was funny. His presence was funny. Not many have that. Gene Wilder, Tracy Morgan, Jerry Stiller, Wanda Sykes, etc.
That is an odd list of people you came up with.
Zero Mostel
Jonathan Winters & Robin Harris were in that line too.
Nice how Lovitz mentioned Jim Carrey along with Phil. A couple of nice Canadian boys.
Even the small role that Phil Hartman & Jon Lovitz had together in three amigos was comedy gold.
He was brilliant. I think I loved everything I saw him in. RIP
what a tragic loss, so talented so nice.
Phil had a great voice.
Phil, Norm, Farley, Sherri, Jan Hooks come to mind to me as some of my favorites.
Farley had his moments when he was funny, that was it
Phil's Clinton in McDonalds was amazing!
"You read mah mind!"
Great skit!

I remember driving and hearing the news that Phil had been killed. It still breaks my heart. What a genius. What a loss.
Cool to see Lovitz having the ability to quickly answer Stern's 1st ? & ignore his known 'or was it because...' lol
Beautiful interview.. .
How nice of Jon to say that about Jim as well. I totally agree- it’s unique to be able to do that. I don’t know about Phil but Jim is legendary
Phil Hartman may have been the most talented sketch comedy actor that ever lived.
Phil was one of the best, when he died NewsRadio wasn’t as funny without him but Jon Lovitz did his best under the circumstances
Brilliant comedian. Miss him.
Tonto, Frankenstein, and Tarzan were hysterical skits by lovitz and nealon and Phil
Ed O Neill has a great story about talking to Lovitz after Phil died. It's on UA-cam, worth looking up.
"Oh, thaaaaaaat!"
RIP Phil Hartman 😔
The "Dubanka" skit with Phil Hartman, Will Ferrell and the rest is one of my all-time favorites. 🤣
Miss Phil so much. Such a Tallent.
He was great in House guest and Jingle all the way but I remember first seeing him in cb4 and loaded weapon. All classics to me
INCREDIBLY TALENTED....WOW!!!!
R.I.P. Phil Hartman- one of his best sketches on SNL was Bill Clinton in the McDonald’s in ‘92.
"You read mah mind!"
Great stories

Robin, i love your glasses!
News Radio was the best.
Jon as Tommy Flanagan needs to guest on SNL with Bowen Yang as George Santos.
That doesn’t sound funny at all.
Jon played santos on the tonight show. And bowen played him on saturday. Both did a great job, even though both were the same “jokes”
Nelson Franklin, from Veep, did Santos on Kimmel. He was perfect.
I love when the Robin Quivers show starring Howard stern has funny people on. It's nice every once and a while to have a bit of humour on the show.
