Just sent off a set of Vaqueros to Gunfighter Industries in Oregon to be tuned and highly customized. They build some wicked fast revolvers, plan on SASS shooting them soon!
Well, all I got to say is, that was awesome! I had this episode on my garage speakers and I could hear the hammers being pulled back very clear. The shots and CLANG of the targets was well pronounced. Beautiful set, may the ol' west be with you!!!

Hi, Great vid as usual. Thx. I just have a question regarding shooting black powder with SAA revolvers and Winchester. Do you have to entirely clean (with total disassembly) your weapons each time ? This is what I am doing with my cap and ball revolvers.

The black powder guys always steal the show. I have the boggie mods on my New Vaqueros too. I had Jim from Cowboys and Indians put them in for a pretty penny a several years ago. My buddy got a pair shortly after me, and he did a home action job adding some wolf springs and slicking’en up a bit. Mine are a little smoother, but not that much given how much more I spent. Matt Black used his with a basic action job to win a few world championships. I would suspect that the difference is more valuable for one handed shooters though like you for sure. Jim from Cowboys and Indians sells his own short stroke kit now.
I always used, and still do quite often, box-stock 1851 Navy RM Conversion Revolvers. Those revolvers have brought home a number of trophies! I do find these Rugers to be more consistently reliable. -Jed 🤠
My daughter is trying to decide between the .45 SASS and a regular .45 blue Vaquero with an SBH hammer installed. I have no idea if the SASS revolvers come slicked from the factory or just come with special grips, montado hammer, consecutive number matching, or anything else. Either way, the dealer in TX she's going to purchase from performs action jobs on all their pistols before selling them, and have options available for them. Some of the prices seem a bit high, but all guns come with action jobs. So we're going to research the inner differences between both revolvers. She already has a slicked up old Vaquero for real heavy loads.
Either set, “regular” New Vaqueros or SASS would server her well. I went with the SASS set because… well, “SASS” 🤠 It’s been such a big part of my life I wanted the special Rugers to commemorate that. Almost bought a set of the 45’s recently (mine are the .357’s) but thought about it too long and someone else bought ‘em.
@@JEDiTVshe'll probably go to purchase a couple blue Vaqueros 4.65 in. barrels in .45 Colt. She, and I wanted bright stainless, but her Delta Elite makes it hard to draw a good sight on the target. The caliber will match her Win. 92. She can't wait to get started in SASS. Keep up the good work making very informative videos. They're extremely helpful. If they only had all the types of revolvers and rifles when I was younger.
It’s like everything else that we’ve run out of or run short on since the pandemic, there really is no way (at least for me) to predict when the supply chains will open back up. I happened to find this set, new, on Gunbroker after being told by countless suppliers that there simply weren’t any available in the supply chain. ~Jed 🤠
Man, I don't know how you can see through all the smoke and never seem to miss...great shooting. I use a pair of SS new Vaqueros with lighter hammer springs but original hammer geometry means I can still have a slip-hammer occasionally. I'm thinking about putting in Blackhawk hammers to see if that helps. I'm fairly new to the game and have a lot to learn. Thanks for all your very interesting and educational videos. Cheers!🤠🤠👍👍
Thanks. I do miss, every now and again 😉 But, seriously, sometimes I can’t see (check out my “Versus The Smokey Point Desperados episode). Glad you’re enjoying the channel and learning from it. -Jed 🤠
Well... the kit alone is right around $450 per revolver. Labor depends on who ya have do it. I’d guess right around $1200 to have Shalako ( cowboybullets.3dcartstores.com ) do ‘em. ~Jed 🤠
I didn't think I wanted that until you mentioned short cycling (slip hammer). Such a drag when that happens. It never happens when it's clean and slick either. I usually get that when the action is gummy from BP and ya feel the burn as you cycle around. Do you think they up your game some? My only other worry... would you short cycle everything else once you got used to them? Gonna have to ponder this now...
Too early to tell if they’ve “upped my game”. Also, a little early to tell how they will effect going back and forth between my 51’s and these. There is a BIG difference between the two... but, then there is a big difference switching to an automatic pistol as well so 🤷♂️ I think the mind and muscle memory will just adapt to what you are shooting. I did notice it though when switching back and forth between the two guns when I shot ‘em back to back one weekend. I mean, it’s noticeable... but, I think, only when they are shot close together and then only on the first couple of cycles of the action before the brain goes “oh, yeah, I remember what to do with these”. ~Jed 🤠
I’m thinking about getting the Pietta Great Western ll single action for my first cowboy pistol. What are your thoughts about this and why did you choose the Navy single action ? Thanks 🙏🏼, any input you have would be awesome !!
I have a set of the Great Western II’s - ua-cam.com/video/aGWsVIPazOY/v-deo.htmlsi=6EorQKoNaEwC5Vsj - they are fantastic. I chose the Navy because of its looks and then found that, for me, they are the most natural pointing revolver I’ve ever picked up! I still absolutely love ‘em. Hands down my favorite revolver for the sport (but, also, not the fastest…)
I like ‘em. I have one of the first ones ol’ Coyote Cap imported. I used to use it quite a bit… then one day I just realized I, personally, am SO much faster with a double that I stick with that for 90% of my competitive shooting.
@@JEDiTV i heard that in 1887 or there abouts John m Browning was designing a pump action shotgun for Winchester and he was approached by an overland stage co about developing a lever action short barrel shotgun while he initially refused to take the job as he was nearly complete with the new pump design he reluctantly said ok and designed what would be known as the mares leg short barreled lever action shotgun and it was a beauty, i could be wrong about some parts of this statement but that's what I've heard about the origin of LASBSGs
How are your short stroke pistols hold up an are still enjoying them. I’m currently saving up to get mine done by shotgun boogie just looking for a long-term review of them..
My opinion of these Rugers hasn’t changed since doing my review; no complaints about them or the SB short stroke kit. It’s a decision I waited too long to make.
I had an older “new” vaquero for fast draw, due to their rugged internals. The newer “new” vaqueros are ridiculously heavy. I would never pick one up for fast draw. But I wonder how it would be for duelist cowboy action.
It hasn’t been an issue for me, yet (only a few matches in with ‘em so we’ll see how I feel after getting a bit more time with them). I do know several Gunfighters and Duelist shooters that use Rugers with no issues or problems. ~Jed 🤠
Well Jedi congratulations on your brand new Ruger vaqueros they look awesome and shoot fantastic. I’ve got a thank you for another great episode of JED iTV you consistently put out great content. That never disappoints. I love watching your channel keep up the good work. I hope someday our paths will cross in person. See you on the Range. In some other place! In Some other time.
That was helpful. I'm thinking of joining sass. Hip shot from California has introduced me to the sport. Badge #7. He's been around awhile. My wife and I love the people of sass.
Thank you! I’m never 100% sure, and I do often leave something out that I think about after the episode is edited and/or posted. So, I appreciate the feedback. ~Jed 🤠
That's a great improvement to the Ruger revolvers. The number of shooters that loose time from a slip hammer with Vaqueros has made me avoid them. We had one years ago, and I passed on a set of vaquero bisleys because of it. Although I do regret passing on the bisleys, if the right set and time ever come together I'll likely grab them.
I wouldn’t shoot Rugers any other way. I found them very stiff outta the box. And, slip-hammering is a Gunfighter’s bane, it’ll eat up a lot of time. ~Jed 🤠
I finally got a day off that coincides with a local shoot, at Paradise Pass, today. Finally got to go sling some lead, and spend time with all my friends! Great day. I think I told you that Paradise Pass is the site of End of Trail this year. They said Founder's Ranch has been sold, and won't be the site of End of Trail anymore. Maybe they'll do it in a different location every year. If so, you might have it near you in the next few years. Before the match, they were talking about EOT, and said "But today isn't EOT." To which, I said "It's Pre-OT."
Fantastic. In fact, when I was struggling to get a clean match at one club I shoot at I strapped on these Rugers and… well, the results speak for themselves: ua-cam.com/video/VdHNxJ7JkzM/v-deo.html -Jed 🤠
TOTALLY agree on your comments regarding "race" guns and stock. My pistols are Jimmy Spurs New Vaqueros fully tricked out, my wife shoots mostly stock (spring change only) SASS Vaqueros. I shoot gunfighter as well and the only discernible difference is the half cock feature. Now, mind you, I don't shoot anywhere near Missouri Lefty speed so which pair is best for me - not a lot of difference. I do love my Jimmy Spurs Vaqueros though, almost as much as Tam loves her SASS Vaqueros.
As someone that is just looking at getting into this sport your videos have been very informative. it seems like the Ruger vaquero is the go to for most people looking to be really competitive. In your opinion are they really that far above most other cowboy pistols out there? I'm very keen to be competitive (having done a fair bit of shooting in the military) but part of me doesn't really want to have the same pistols as everyone else on the range.
No, I don’t think they are “far above most other cowboy pistols out there”. They are great and they are reliable - but, I think they need work to run competitively. My advice, IF you can, try before you buy! Find what is comfortable for you to shoot and what you like. Hope that helps. -Jed 🤠
@@JEDiTV thanks Jed, unfortunately it seems everyone at my club is shooting Vaqueros so I've only been able to try those. Thanks again for all your great videos and replying to me too! Mighty nice of ya 🤠
Forgot how many years ago found a Winchester 94AE chambered in .45 colt. Really liked the large loop an such and fun to fire. Then about a year later found a used Ruger vaquero in .45 colt I really liked the stainless. Don’t remember it getting super dirty firing it wonder if that’s more cause I’m using modern ammo not black powder loads. Not sure if I’ll compete with them I’ll probably more just shoot targets with friends and have fun
Yeah, the smokeless (modern) ammo does not get anywhere near as dirty as Black Powder does. I used to have one of those ‘94 AE’s as well. Good rifles 👍
Thanks for the tip, I’m on the hunt for the half-round, half-octagon (and, really, by hunt I just mean I need to order one! If I’d done that I’d already have the dang thing…).
Jed have you considered networking with other gun tubers channels it might help your channel grow and I'm certain there are other gun tubers that are into cowboy action shooting just a thought, happy shooting and good day to you
I have. I work with Santee over on the Arizona Ghostriders channel quite a bit. In fact he and I were just discussing an upcoming project this morning. Stay tuned. 🤠
Enjoy the info, I have always found the Rugers just too heavy. I realize because of the way they are cast, they have to make them heavier (due to the weakness of the steel it produces). But you certainly run them well.
Holy smoke! Charcoal burning for sure. I really would like a Ruger Montado .45. While I'm not a gamesman, I think that little gat would make for a fine daily carry piece in the mountains for whatever comes up. A completely tuned one would be nice. .Some of your points here are valid for a dangerous game encounter too. Don't know if I would want to trade a 6th shot for some of the mods though. Although I know that 5 rounds usually is more than enough for an "incident". .45 Colt wins arguments against potentially dangerous animals with milder manners than any magnum. True magnum handgun rounds do not lend themselves to rapid follow up shots. It's all about the raw power on the first shot. Not convinced that is actually the best way to go for what I'm thinking as a do all field revolver.
Yes, there can be. It depends on the angle of the target. Some use the type that angles the lead downward (I like those). It also depends on the condition the steel, real old pitted targets will create more splatter. That’s the reason eye protection is mandatory for all shooters AND spectators. ~Jed 🤠
If you add these mods to my TALO New Vaqueros with old frames will it still work trigger transfer bar so I can carry safely with 6 rounds in the cylinder still?
I notice on my tricked out new vaqueros if you don’t cock the hammer fast enough the cylinder does not clock to dead primer center. Won’t strike primer dead center.
I thought about it... then I found the octagon barreled Great Westerns and decided to take these a different way (especially since the cost of doing those barrels is very, very expensive). ~Jed 🤠
I had the transfer bar removed so, yes, only carry five with the hammer down on an empty. SASS Cowboy Action Shooting Rules require that the hammer be down on an empty chamber so removing the transfer bar safety works in this situation. If it was a carry gun or used for some other purpose I might think twice about removing it. -Jed
Nice guns. But I hope that You do not stop using Your 51 conversions. I personally use mostly gear that is rarely seen on sass match (lightning, yellowboy musket, 1887, and diffrent kind of long barreled revelvers) and to me one of values of Your channel is a possibility of seeing someone shooting something other that those sleeked up, ultra short stroked race guns...
I’d never give up on my 1851’s! I love those guns. The Rugers are were kind of a “whim”... well, I’m sure you say the episode that prompted me to buy ‘em. I’ll rotate them in, build a nice “Gamer Loadout” with ‘em. But, I won’t make ‘em my main loadout (too many other fun guns to shoot!). Plus... I’ve got plans for those ‘51’s if this first set comes out the way I hope. ~Jed 🤠
Does the half cock notch and paw act as a stop when unloading....on a colt when unloading iI like to back the cylinder up against the paw and the cylinder lines up with the ejector rod
Yes. With the revolver on half-cock and the loading gate open the cylinder clicks and then will only go backwards far enough to line up a cylinder hole with the ejector rod. Hope that answers your question. ~Jed
Well, Shotgun Boogie has a reputation for being one of the best, it’s his parts that are in my revolvers. But, as I said in the video, I had the install work done by Shalako at Desperado Cowboy Bullets. -Jed 🤠

I have seen some folks use .357 in their rifles but I don’t recall seeing anyone using that caliber in their revolvers. I could be wrong of course 🤷♂️ The revolvers are chambered to accept the .357 cartridge but most folks, in the competitive shooting world, prefer the ease of shooting/reloading the .38 special case. -Jed 🤠

I’ve seen gunsmith custom make ‘em for the 51’s. In other words they cut and re-weld the hammer. I’m always hesitant to do it because I really like the lines of the ‘51 the way it is, including that very hard to reach, tall, hammer spur! 😆 Plus, if I do it on one I’d have to do it on the other 7 and that’d get expensive (or I should say, “expensiver” 😉).

Yes, you should tear them down as often as possible to make sure there is no fouling inside causing issues.
~Jed 🤠
@@JEDiTV Thx for your honest and constructive answer 👍😃
-Jed 🤠
Shalako does amazing work! You’re gonna have great fun with these. And you can see your targets after you fire! LOL
Yeah, he did an amazing job on these and I have been enjoying them. In fact… I think I’ll use ‘em at the RUCAS Annual coming up next weekend. 🤠
The black power let's them know you've been there! 🤠😂🤣
Yep! 🤠
When do you expect the price/availability of vaqueros to come back to normal? Has been hard to find them recently.
It’s like everything else that we’ve run out of or run short on since the pandemic, there really is no way (at least for me) to predict when the supply chains will open back up. I happened to find this set, new, on Gunbroker after being told by countless suppliers that there simply weren’t any available in the supply chain.

Man, I don't know how you can see through all the smoke and never seem to miss...great shooting. I use a pair of SS new Vaqueros with lighter hammer springs but original hammer geometry means I can still have a
slip-hammer occasionally.

Pretty cool stuff mate, are you going to customise the handgrips to wood ?
Thanks. And, yes, I think so.
~Jed 🤠
So whats the cost to upgrade?..got a couple vaqueros myself..might help with the thumb arthritis
Well... the kit alone is right around $450 per revolver. Labor depends on who ya have do it. I’d guess right around $1200 to have Shalako ( cowboybullets.3dcartstores.com ) do ‘em.
~Jed 🤠
They be slick!!!!
That be the truth!
Are you shooting black powder? Seems like a lot of smoke for smokeless powder.
Yes Paul, I always shoot Black Powder.
💨 🔫 💨 🔫 🤠
@@JEDiTV Ok, that explains the smoke and the mess on those beautiful stainless steel Rugers.🙂

@@JEDiTV , thank you 🙏🏼 so much for the response and information !!
1:01 why not show footage of your box stock Uberti 1851 navy revolvers?
That’s what I’m shooting in that footage… they’re straight outta the box, stock, 1851 Navy Richard-Mason Conversion revolvers…
i really do enjoy your content
I sure do appreciate your comment. Thanks.
What is your thoughts on lever action shotguns?
@@JEDiTV thanks for the feedback and great videos. I point a lot of new shooters your way. because you do a great job of explaining the stages out.

Love your videos, thank you.
You’re welcome. And, I appreciate the comment!
~Jed 🤠
Yeah I did springs in mine and trigger spring and super blackhawk hammers.. shoot them ok. I think short stoke would be nice. Then I would GF more
Very beautiful guns.
Thank you.
“Pre-OT” I like it. Sounds like it was a good day. How’d ya shoot?

What kind of accuracy do you normally get out of your Ruger New Vaqueros?
Fantastic. In fact, when I was struggling to get a clean match at one club I shoot at I strapped on these Rugers and… well, the results speak for themselves:

TOTALLY agree on your comments regarding "race" guns and stock. My pistols are Jimmy Spurs New Vaqueros fully tricked out, my wife shoots mostly stock (spring change only) SASS Vaqueros. I shoot gunfighter as well and the only discernible difference is the half cock feature. Now, mind you, I don't shoot anywhere near Missouri Lefty speed so which pair is best for me - not a lot of difference. I do love my Jimmy Spurs Vaqueros though, almost as much as Tam loves her SASS Vaqueros.
Thanks for the comment!

JD -Outfitters has the Uberti in the white with a full octagon barrel.
Thanks. I was a hold out for a long time. But, there is somethin’ about ‘em… you can run ‘em hard and fast and they hold up and keep on clicking.
" I'm just a gun fighter what can I say " ! Very cool ! A great Easter JED and y'all.
😂 Happy Easter to you too Marco!

I used Montana’s in my Mounted Shooting days… kinda wish I’d never sold ‘em as they were fine revolvers.
As a complete novice, I'm wondering if there are any issues with ricochet?
Yes, there can be. It depends on the angle of the target. Some use the type that angles the lead downward (I like those). It also depends on the condition the steel, real old pitted targets will create more splatter.
That’s the reason eye protection is mandatory for all shooters AND spectators.
~Jed 🤠
@@JEDiTV , thanks for the helpful intel.
Did u get the free spin also?
I did not. Should I? 😉

I personally like the clicks when I spin the cylinder. The benefit would b if u need to pistol reload. U can spin backwards

They’re great. 👍
Your lever action is awesome! The Rugers. . . Hell yes. Good vid, thank you!
You’re welcome. Glad you enjoyed it.
If you add these mods to my TALO New Vaqueros with old frames will it still work trigger transfer bar so I can carry safely with 6 rounds in the cylinder still?
The modifications I had done remove the transfer bar. I only use these for competition so I have no plans on carrying them with 6.
-Jed 🤠
Sounds good
I notice on my tricked out new vaqueros if you don’t cock the hammer fast enough the cylinder does not clock to dead primer center. Won’t strike primer dead center.
🤔 I’d let whoever did the work on ‘em know and have that issue corrected.
-Jed
I want to do the octagonal barrels put on my rugers... expensive look
I thought about it... then I found the octagon barreled Great Westerns and decided to take these a different way (especially since the cost of doing those barrels is very, very expensive).
~Jed 🤠
Yeah I think 1100 for the pair. At boomstick
Are targets normally that close?
Nope. Target distance varies depending on the club and/or who the match director is.
Nice
Thank you!
So with the half cock modification, it’s best to carry on a dead cylinder? Is that true? I know with transfer bar you’re save loading 6.
-Jed
What is the barrel length of your Vaqueros?
4.62 inches (117 mm).
@@JEDiTV Thanks, amigo.
~Jed
Who is a good gunsmith for these guns thanks
Well, Shotgun Boogie has a reputation for being one of the best, it’s his parts that are in my revolvers. But, as I said in the video, I had the install work done by Shalako at Desperado Cowboy Bullets.
