My brother and a friend were so into SASS that they once flew into a match hosted next door to an airport, attired in period correct western garb. Oh, and their airplane was a two-seat Piper Colt. A late friend of mine in Texas was an early SASS enthusiasts. He carefully read the rules which required the firearms to be of designs that were in production prior to 1900. So imagine the delight and surprise of the other participants when he showed up with a tripod mounted, belt-fed, Colt-Browning 1895 "Potato Digger" machine gun. He didn't enter it in the match, but allowed anyone to shoot it for $1 per round, the proceeds of which went to his local SASS club.
I sure hope that’s mostly true. Had a fella at a gun show in Utah discourage me from starting by touting how good he was and how he’d been doing it longer than I’ve been alive. Just basically putting me down to uplift himself. Made me pretty upset, ngl. I’ll eventually get into the sport but fellas like him do exist. They exist and they absolutely shouldn’t be at gun show greeting tables.
A cowboy emigrated to Wales and opened a ranch at Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch Unfortunately, none of his cattle survived the branding.
Good morning Santee. It's Ted from Texas. This was definitely a seriously cool video man. It makes me miss the days when I used to do Civil War reenacting. I did a lot of it in Gettysburg. Some of it upstate New York. Had my picture taken so many times but so many people. Is exciting and educational. I did play on the losing team. But I tried to keep the history alive and explain to people everything that happened and why it happened. Thanks man. Hope to see you someday
I love CAS it is a world of fun. My best friend, used to say"Remind me to never get into a gun fight with you . I haven't been able to compete for a while due to cataracts but I am having the surgery.
Great timing...The SASS National Championship (Land Run) was last week, just outside of Oklahoma City. I managed to get Top Ten in my category in just my fourth year in the sport. I recognized a few people in this video, and shoot with some of them on a regular basis. You really do make lasting friendships from all across the country. Maybe I'll see you at Ides of March. -Diamond Jake
I enjoy watching the competition between some of those fellers. Touching off one of those double barrel scatterguns can be a real blast BLAST!! It takes a bit for the smoke to clear and couldn’t imagine what it was really like in an old saloon back then. Thanks for sharing big thumbs up.
I've been slowly acquiring the necessary bits of equipment for a long time, Santee! Joined up with the SASS a couple of years ago, but have yet to compete in a match! Should have picked the alias "Slowpoke Rodriguez" rather than "Butch Cassowary." Still building my essential leather bits to hold up my pants and hardware! LOL Thanks for the video!
Thanks for the great video Santee. Last weekend was my first SASS shoot and I have never had a better time competing in shooting sports in 50 years. The folks were ever so friendly and helpful. You won't meet a better group. See you on down the trail. Bullwhip McKenna
I used to do historical reenactment for the Fur Trade era. Same reasons. It does get expensive for playing dress up with a gun. But there’s so much more to history than just the guns and shooting!
Santee, *Jed i and your other guests were great. I had no idea such a sport exists. I can totally understand why safety issues are so important, especially with families involved. The audio, and visual clips were super, as always. The speed of some of the competitors is amazing! 👏🏻👏🏻🤠
You are correct, Santee … CAS can get expensive! The firearms and leather are the major expenses. Clothing, that is Period Correct clothing, adds to the fund outlay; however, NOTHING BEATS A MONTHLY MATCH … except a BIG MATCH! Thanks for the video. Arty Redleg, Panhandle Cowboys, Holt, FL.
I got to see a full on cowboy shootout in Silverton, CO when I was in my teens. Multiple actors! Seeing this video takes me back to that. AND you referenced one’d my favorite movies: Open Range! Thank you Santee! This was a very cool, informative video, and I enjoyed it a ton! Definitely doesn’t look any kind of easy.
My ancestors participated in a similar sport. It involved shooting and cowboys and cavalry and wagons and such. There were not as many rules with safety and dress codes, but getting disqualified was a bit more permanent ......
Legit LOL'd at the double tap from the shotgun. I wish Hollywood would occasionally acknowledge the eardrum-shattering volume of a 12ga, ESPECIALLY indoors.
These competitions look like a blast(pun intended). I have to wonder that, if it were popular in the Hollywood Western days, if some of our movie cowboy heroes would participate. It would be cool to see John Wayne, Chuck Conners, Lone Ranger, etc participate in the sport.
I've watched some of these events on youtube, they look like fun!!! They're using live rounds, but I believe some people use cartridges that arent as powerful as regular rounds? Just thought I'd mention that, not sure how true it is. Thanks as always Santee! It's not a weekend without your youtube uploads!
The rifle and revolver doesn't have any recoil due to very low power plus the target are very close. I'm not a hater just wish it wasn't that way and don't even talk about the fast draw competition lol
Oh interesting. I never knew that about fast draw competition. Thanks Santee! I've got some cowboy loads for my 44mag lever action. Shooting the real stuff at the range hurts 😂😂
For me, CAS was the "gateway drug" that got me into Old West reenactment. When CAS got too expensive and ammo was impossible to find, I dropped out only to fall in with the Circle D Rangers.
Hey Santee, what a great video. I never knew there was anything like this. What a great way to have fun and compete at the same time. Thank you for sharing! 🤠
Hi Santee, when I was younger my daughter and I would be a part of a West show. Dressed in period with real guns of the time, but with black powder blanks. Also staged robbery's on horse back with good and bad guys falling shot off the horses. I stayed mounted LoL. We also guess you could call it cowboy action shooting on horse back. Shooting balloons filled with helium. The bullets were loaded with black powder and saw dust to pop the balloons. Sure miss those days. Great video Sir.🤠🇺🇲
About that map With a wife from the czech republic Cowboys and Cowgirls are big time there, shooting I have no idea I have not seen that there . Happy trails
Missed the video drop this AM “cause I went to The Huron Valley Regulators first ever match! Had a great time too! Now our club’s Halloween Pumpkin-bash match is next Saturday.
I don't remember his name but there were a guy who where so fast that he could draw his revolver, shoot two shots and put is inthe holster faster than you can blink. It sounded like one shot but he hit two balloons that were side by side.

CooL! We gotta try it all, I say!
If you say 'Pew Pew' at any time, at any stage while participating you'll get a bonus.

Yup, first learned about the SASS back in the early 1990s, when I wore a younger man's clothes. Fantastic organization. Great video, Santee. 🤠
