Thank you for taking the time and making the effort to create this informative video. I have a Henry rifle in 45 Colt and wanted to get a revolver in the same caliber. Your video was helpful; I getting the Vaqueros - Yeeha!

Jed, I had a 51 Navy have the same problem and I found it was a small ridge on the inside recoil shield. I smoothed it out with a stone and now it’s fine. It was just enough to catch the rim of the cartridge and hang it up.
I love my 1851 conversion. It's a little different, very elegant, and with the long barrel very accurate. It's also had reliability issues since day one. My Taylor Smoke Wagon and Ruger (Old Model) Vaquero on the other hand are amazing. And it's nice knowing with the right cartridge choice that Vaquero could be used for other things besides cowboy shooting. Really like the set you got; hard to go wrong with the Rugers, and looks like from the video you might even be a bit faster with those, especially once you've had time to get used to them. Oh, and if anyone wants to fire black powder out of my guns, no problem. But we're going to get to be good friends later while we clean guns together.

That's too expensive friend. I sold my Ruger Vaquero in 45 Colt with a 7 1/2". Buy the Ruger Wrangler in 22 caliber. It's more fun to shoot and probably cheaper in Thailand.

Some say they are very accurate out the box. Some say they are not. Thanks in advance. Peace.
Based on my experience with ‘em they are very accurate. I personally don’t care for the Blackhawk (but, I like old-school fixed sights 🤷♂️). I think the “proof is in the pudding”, as they say. I shot multiple clean matches with these revolvers. The only times I’ve missed is if I’m pushin’ the trigger, jerking the trigger or just plain pullin’ the trigger before I’m on target. If you have the opportunity try both and see which you like best. Personally, I wouldn’t hesitate to pick-up those 45’s (or a set of the New Vaqueros in that caliber). Hope that info helps! -Jed

I have a set of the SASS Ruger Vaqueros, in .357/.38, and I love them. Man, o, man, you don't realize how dirty the black powder gets the guns, until you see it on the stainless revolvers. Best of luck to you. Take care and God bless.
I use a pair of Vaqueros but they're not the SASS version, I bought them at different times, it's a bummer because the grips are a little different shade. Mine are .38/.357 as is my Rossi R92. I'm shooting smokeless instead of BP. Good choice of revolvers JED i.
Great video! Because of these a bought a single great western IIII in .357 and 4 3/4 in barrell a year ago ago and love it! Need to complete my arsenal so I can try a match.
I just shot those new Great Western revolvers (the ones I previewed in this episode) at a match yesterday. Keep an eye out for that episode coming in a couple of weeks. ~Jed 🤠
Yeah, I was really disappointed in both the failure of my revolvers and the fact that I didn’t bring any backups. I was grateful there was someone there I could borrow from! And, yeah, I really turned it up and turned the match around once I was “properly outfitted”. ~Jed 🤠
Just subscribed, love your videos. Nice shooting by the way! I have been shooting SASS for about 10 years now in Classic Cowboy with a Uberti 44-40 rifle and Ruger 45 colt revolvers. I want to go to black powder in another year or two, so I picked up a nice pair of slicked up Taylor Gunfighter revolvers in 44-40 as I prefer that caliber for BP. Be well and please keep the great videos coming!
Thanks for the comment and I sure do appreciate you subscribing. I have a “How To” load 44-40 with Black Powder. If you’re looking for info and haven’t seen that episode I’ll be glad to provide you with a link. ~Jed 🤠
Same thing. Send your Rutgers to Shotgun Boogie. He makes the parts all the other cowboy gun smiths’ use. He really is the best. He guarantees his work. Period.
Thanks again James. I was just replying to your last comment that I am having Boogie parts put into these Rugers. They should be back in my hands towards the end of this month... stay tuned. ~Jed 🤠
Hi Jedi, I have handled Rongos Rugers at True Grit a while back and they are very slick, I love mine and have had 0 problems with mine and the Mrs. 38's now for thousands of rounds. They will do you well. Miss seeing ya down here in South Oregun. By the way who is Mae Cannon, ya think she is packen 38's or 45's?
M.G. Shagnasty those vaquero's you handled at True Grit where my 45 Colt set , they've been worked on but I don't know who did the work and you right , slicker than snot. We where sad when True Grit was cancelled this year , it's our favorite match , good food , challenging match and the best campground I've ever been to
Rugers have always been a great choice for the game. Miss Harley shoots ‘em, Kook shoots ‘em... I just have always preferred the more “traditional” Italian Clones. And, now, I have options. - Jed 🤠
Enjoyed that video Jed! Ruger Vaqueros are hard to beat for durability and function. I had my Vaqueros slicked up by Jimmy Spurs from Cowboy Gun Works. When I received them I swore they feel like there running on greased lightning and ball bearings. They are that smooth!
I would love to get started in cowboy action shooting, ive been shooting 45lc/.410 my whole life, cant wait to get on the field and practice for a competition, I have no idea what to expect
Man id love to be able to do this! I love these old guns. I live in the u.k and its an absolute nightmare to get the real deal - so i make do with a pair of umarex .177 colt peacemakers in my back yard lol. Awesome vid man, was fun to watch
That is unfortunate that it is so much trouble to get these old west firearms where you’re at. I’ve had the opportunity to play with those .177 CO2 revolvers, they are quite a bit of fun! Not the “real deal” but, fun in their own right. ~Jed 🤠
I think they are fantastic. I have used ‘em for over 2 decades and still continue to use ‘em. This is the only set that has given me fits (one in particular) and I think it was just a “lemon” from the factory.
I’ve subscribed not too long ago and started watching your videos so I’m not for sure on this. You seem to shoot 44-40 as the pistol cartridge , is that correct? Do the ruger sass pistols come in 44-40?
Howdy Richard, and welcome! I typically shoot .38 in my revolvers. When I started the game I knew I wanted to shoot the ‘51 Navy, a .36 caliber Percussion Revolver. Those revolvers, when converted to cartridge, shoot .38. So, 44-40 in my Rifles, .38 in my revolvers. The SASS Model New Vaquero is only available in .357 or .45 (Colt). Vaqueros are available in 44-40 though. Hope that sorts things out for ya. ~Jed 🤠
One of my Uberti 1875's was hanging up sometimes a few years back. One match I paid attention to which chamber was getting hang ups to see if it was the same one all the time. It happened twice, on different chambers. While cleaning brass, I noticed a drag mark on some of my brass, and the drag mark was curved and went across the primer pocket. I removed the cylinder and rubbed my finger across the firing pin hole. There were burrs around the hole. I dressed the hole using a circular needle file, problem went away. Seems the rims on some brands of brass were slightly thicker than others, and would drag on those burrs. The casings I noted the drag marks on were all the same brand. Don't remember what the brand was now.
@@JEDiTV when I get 500 pieces of .45 Colt brass for $35, it doesn't make sense to be a brass snob. So what if I tossed out 30 pieces of brass because they're S&B? Of course, when I buy new brass, it's Starline. Because what you said about Starline is undeniably true.
Cool vid JED-i. Yes, one of these days, I'll start competing in SASS. I have the guns in 357mag and 45 LC along with the rifles and 12g Stage Coach. I Just have to find some time. Lol. Good luck and see you at the range.
I should have ‘em back soon. I believe the hang up was caused by the Hand (?)… I’m having them completely tuned up so stay tuned, I’ll film an episode about ‘em when I get ‘em back. -Jed 🤠

Howdy, best bet is to hunt up a local club and go out and meet folks. Lots of times they’ll let you try it out and point you in the right direction for purchasing gear (guns, leather, etc...). Here is a link to search for clubs in your area: www.sassnet.com/clubs/
Love my RNV .357 4 3/4ish revolvers! I want to get the SASS pair in 45 colt because of reasons... just haven't mustered up the courage to dip into the 45 colt game. Great look at these revolvers and some great shootin!
That is totally personal preference. A lot of folks swear by the Ruger, others the Pietta or Uberti. 🤷♂️ I would recommend trying them both and using what fits you better and what you shoot better with. Hope that helps. ~Jed 🤠
🤔 Ya know, I’d suspect they are both capable of sending out some lemons. Rare out of Ruger or Pietta/Uberti but possible from both. Did that answer help? ~Jed
Always liked Ruger revolvers , so when i started shooting SASS it was only natural to get a set of Vaquero's . They weren't SASS addition so the after i got tired of slipping off the hammers i swapped em out for the SBH . Total game changer for me . Good luck with those Ruger's your gonna love them .
I just went in the opposite direction. I just received my New To Me 1851 Navy conversions and I have to say they area whole different animal. I have to get used to the hammer notch sight, the further reach for my thumb to the hammer and the longer stroke as well. I will have to get them slicked up eventually but I think it will be hard for them to replace my Vaqueros!
Both sets look awesome. It's funny that you showcased the faulty '51. I'm up to 6 open top and conversions now, over the 4 I acquired this year (2 in .38 & 2 in .45 Schofield) one of the .38's was doing almost exactly that when my wife was shooting a monthly match. After her stage I went up to the unloading table, a pard was looking at it, He was able to get it to jam even when empty, but I wasn't able to. Pretty confusing. I haven't looked at it since, on the next match she used one of our tried and true revolvers. Let us know what the fix is once you know.🤠🤠👍👍
I will post something once I get to the bottom of why mine is acting up. I’ve been using nothing but Italian 1851’s for over 20 years this one has felt a little funny from day one and, like I said, it just gettin’ progressively worse. Time to get the mystery solved and make it a reliable firearm again. - Jed 🤠
@@JEDiTV I'm also loving the talo style with the brideshead grips it's 3.75 barrel in 45 or 357 44 or whatever your flavor is they are very elegant looking almost like the barkeep pistols very cool another in the vaquero line from Ruger
I have a pair of New Vaqueros in 45 Colt, and would love to have the sass version, but they’re nowhere to be found. I may have to buy a couple Montado hammers and convert my set.
Yes, I believe I did that years ago. Might have helped some. But, now, it’s just not worth the frustration to take it off the wall and go to the range. And, I won’t until it has a thorough check up and repair. - Jed 🤠
If someone is looking into getting into the sport, and is on a budget and wants to pick up a lever action rifle first, what would you recommend they do (what brand/model to look into, what store/website to buy from, etc.)
love my Rugers , had a pair of 1851 navies and they did the same thing. i really liked the way they looked but they just didn't hold up. good video thanks.
Thanks Slowhand. Only having trouble with this one so I’m hoping once I get it fixed up I’ll be back on the range with it not looking back at the bad days. - Jed 🤠
Joe, (from the Shooter’s Handbook - and I’ll link to the full document below). “Revolver calibers must be centerfire calibers of at least .32 caliber and no larger than .45 caliber or percussion calibers of at least .36 caliber and no larger than .45 caliber. Ok, just looked up Ravensdale, WA. Until this virus hit I was in the Seattle area 3-4 times a year for work. When I can start back traveling again, I’m going to have to schedule my time so I can be around when some of these matches are taking place. The company I work for is located in Lakewood just off the 512 and I-5.
Benjy Abbott we have match's in the puget sound area every weekend day of the month except for the forth saturday and the fifth weekend,if there is a fifth weekend so you could attend a match almost anytime your in lakewood , that was pre covid-19 but we are having 4 match's a right now
Benjy Abbott I don't think much on facebook , I usually just go to the the clubs website , this match is at cascade Ghost riders.com and they shoot the third Sunday, rucas is at renton united cowboy action shooters and they shoot the first Sunday of the month and the day before , mima Marauders in little rock shoot second Saturday , those are the clubs shooting now , not sure when the smokey point desperados in marysville will start shooting again. There are clubs in poulsbo and port townsend also but not sure when they will able to start shooting again , hopefully soon
Benjy, A lot of times I will included the clubs website link in the description of the video. And, if I don’t someone outta remind me to do it! 😉 Also, you might try SASS Northwest on Facebook. - Jed 🤠
JED iTV I’ll do that man. Wished I had of known about your channel before this virus hit. I’ve been traveling out there the past 10 + years now. Hopefully I’ll start getting back out there after the first of the year. I typically stay 2 weeks when I come out there. Y’all take care!
Someday someone will have to make a 1851 that actually performs. I know it's difficult since they're open top but with how far guns have come I feel like someday it will be possible.
Yes I do. And yes it does. But, like the saying goes, “Don’t limit your challenges. Challenge your limits.” I’ve tried smokeless in competition… frankly, I didn’t like it anywhere near as much as the smoke and fire and boom of real Black Powder. -Jed 🤠
After thousands of rounds, in various Cowboy disciplines, I have found nothing beats a 3 screw colt/colt clone. I cant tell you how many transfer bars I have seen break. In fact, there is an industry that offers replacements with upgraded metal. In addition, have an armorer show you a Ruger exploded diagram. Why so complicated? I can frame strip my colt clones and replace a rare parts failure between stages . Just my thoughts...
I appreciate your opinion. Me, I like to have options. I avoided Rugers for a long time, now I enjoy having a load-out that includes them. And, the transfer bar on mine was removed before I even put a round down range with ‘em. -Jed
I’m hoping this will be a thing for me. I’ve done some reenactment And was American Mountain Man for a while. Im rather new to this period of History and firearms I did come out last year to see the guys in Canby Or shoot.. would appreciate any advice or direction
Oh, I know most of those folks from the Canby range! Fine folks indeed. As far as direction, keep watching episodes here to learn how things work and spend time with the folks at Canby. I’d attend a few of their monthly matches and get a feel for how things operate there. Help out with some of the posse chores if you’re comfortable with that. And, ask a lot of questions! I know those folks will have the answers.
@@JEDiTV I just got one. But I lucked out and got it from a guy who was either a professional or talented amateur gunsmith. @@JEDiTV happy shooting there's just something about the single actions and lever actions and the new Rugers are hot little beauties i also like the Ruger blackhawk aswell
Best single action for black powder I love my rugers dependable easy to clean up no matter how gunky they get with black powder. if its in stainless it will never corrode and will work well after 100's of black powder rounds. plus with Windex you can spruce up between sets spray down lube up like new.
I’ve been really happy with this set and, yes, clean-up on the stainless is pretty darn easy. Still like my 1851’s best… but that’s just a personal preference (and certainly not the most practical option!).
Had one of these once in blue 5 1/2 inch .45, it shot ok, just not totally to my satisfaction. Sold it on a whim. Sorry I did. Want another one in 4 3/4 inch and try to get it to run with the RCBS SAA 270 grain SWC. I want an easy carrying .45 that will punch a 🐻 or 🐖 length wise with a load that don't ring my bell every time I cap one off under field conditions. I believe .45 Colt with that bullet is likely one of the best mountain or western field tools a guy could carry on a daily basis.
I understand, it actually took me years to buy them. I was also able to partially “rationalize” (for lack of a better word) the need for them as part of what I do here on UA-cam. -Jed
Both Kook and Miss Harley have always shot Rugers (as do a LOT of SASS folks). I like these... but, I’m still pretty found of those Italian ‘51 Navy Revolvers. ~Jed 🤠

I have a set of the SASS Ruger Vaqueros, in .357/.38, and I love them. Man, o, man, you don't realize how dirty the black powder gets the guns, until you see it on the stainless revolvers. Best of luck to you. Take care and God bless.
Miss Harley’s stainless revolvers are the same way. But, they do clean up nice every time afterwards. ~Jed 🤠
I use a pair of Vaqueros but they're not the SASS version, I bought them at different times, it's a bummer because the grips are a little different shade. Mine are .38/.357 as is my Rossi R92. I'm shooting smokeless instead of BP. Good choice of revolvers JED i.
Thanks. I’m looking forward to ringing steel with ‘em. ~Jed 🤠
~Jed 🤠
JED iTV will be watching for it! Thank you for sharing!
Great video. Been wanting to get into cas for a while. Got any videos on where to start out gun wise.
Working on that! Stay tuned...
~Jed 🤠
Wow. Now you're really making me look bad! ;) Nice come back in that match! Tipsy has a pair and loves them!
Yeah, I was really disappointed in both the failure of my revolvers and the fact that I didn’t bring any backups. I was grateful there was someone there I could borrow from! And, yeah, I really turned it up and turned the match around once I was “properly outfitted”. ~Jed 🤠
Great video! Remember Jedi, you know a gunsmith in Hobart that can slick them Rugers up for ya!
Thank ya kindly Cedar! ~Jed 🤠
Beautiful cowboy gun collection love it want one myself
Thank you.
Bought mine when they first come out in 357 and haven’t looked back. They are great for shooting duelist or gunfighter
Yeah, Kook’s been using a pair (not the “SASS” model”) for a while and they’ve been great revolvers.
~Jed 🤠
Congratulations on the new Rugers!
Thanks Bob. - Jed 🤠
Same thing. Send your Rutgers to Shotgun Boogie. He makes the parts all the other cowboy gun smiths’ use. He really is the best. He guarantees his work. Period.
Thanks again James. I was just replying to your last comment that I am having Boogie parts put into these Rugers. They should be back in my hands towards the end of this month... stay tuned.

Looking forward to gettin’ mine slicked-up. Just considering all the great smiths out there... - Jed 🤠
Really enjoyed your video!
Glad you enjoyed it and I appreciate the comment!

I think the same could be said for the 32’s... ~Jed 🤠
~Jed 🤠
@@JEDiTV yeah they are good fun. All the best to you sir.
What do u think about uberti revolvers for cowboy action shooting
Good information but, not the problem that I’m having. Also, I only use Starline Brass for reloading. They’re super consistent. ~Jed 🤠
You need to bring that pistol to the next match so I have a chance lol.
😆 Okay, I will (after I get it fixed 😉). ~Jed 😛

Thanks Sergeant T. Keep at it, you’ll find some time eventually.

Did you ever find the cause of that hang up on your revolver? I have an Uberti Cattlemen that hangs up like that.I’m trying to find the problem.
I should have ‘em back soon. I believe the hang up was caused by the Hand (?)… I’m having them completely tuned up so stay tuned, I’ll film an episode about ‘em when I get ‘em back.

I wanna get into cowboy shooting in Columbus, Ohio. I’ve hardly shoot guns, only 3 times in my life. Can you point me in a good direction?
Howdy, best bet is to hunt up a local club and go out and meet folks. Lots of times they’ll let you try it out and point you in the right direction for purchasing gear (guns, leather, etc...). Here is a link to search for clubs in your area:

Love my RNV .357 4 3/4ish revolvers! I want to get the SASS pair in 45 colt because of reasons... just haven't mustered up the courage to dip into the 45 colt game. Great look at these revolvers and some great shootin!
Thanks! Let me know if/when ya take the leap and buy those 45’s. ~Jed 🤠
Jed, is there a benefit to choosing a Ruger Vaquero over a Pietta Traditions at all??
Tnx!
That is totally personal preference. A lot of folks swear by the Ruger, others the Pietta or Uberti. 🤷♂️ I would recommend trying them both and using what fits you better and what you shoot better with.
Hope that helps. ~Jed 🤠
@@JEDiTV thanks, also wondering if the quality is better on Ruger or not...
🤔 Ya know, I’d suspect they are both capable of sending out some lemons. Rare out of Ruger or Pietta/Uberti but possible from both.

@@JEDiTV Thank you Sir
Always liked Ruger revolvers , so when i started shooting SASS it was only natural to get a set of Vaquero's . They weren't SASS addition so the after i got tired of slipping off the hammers i swapped em out for the SBH . Total game changer for me . Good luck with those Ruger's your gonna love them .
Thanks Dan! I’m looking forward to ringing steel with this set. ~Jed 🤠
Ugh....my condolences on the open tops, I think all BP shooters feel your pain.
Well, I’ll get it back up and runnin’. They’re still my favorite revolvers for the game. This one just needs some TLC. ~Jed 🤠
I love the 1851’s. I don’t think I’ll ever stop using them in this sport. But, these Rugers (once tuned up) are pretty darn sweet!
~Jed 🤠
I have a pair of New Vaqueros in 45 Colt, and would love to have the sass version, but they’re nowhere to be found. I may have to buy a couple Montado hammers and convert my set.
I’m kinda on the hunt for a pair of 45’s as well.
You replace the hand in it? Had a similar issue with a SAA.
Yes, I believe I did that years ago. Might have helped some. But, now, it’s just not worth the frustration to take it off the wall and go to the range. And, I won’t until it has a thorough check up and repair. - Jed 🤠

I sold my 51s to buy my Rugers, very sorry I did that.
With the cowboy action is there a requirement for what caliber your revolvers need to be?
Joe, (from the Shooter’s Handbook - and I’ll link to the full document below). “Revolver calibers must be centerfire calibers of at least .32 caliber and no larger than .45 caliber or percussion calibers of at least .36 caliber and no larger than .45 caliber.
Must be in a caliber commonly available in revolvers. Examples include, but are not limited to, .32-20, .32 Magnum, .357 Magnum, .38 Special, .44 Magnum, .44-40, and .45 Colt).”

There are clubs in poulsbo and port townsend also but not sure when they will able to start shooting again , hopefully soon

Still like my 1851’s best… but that’s just a personal preference (and certainly not the most practical option!).
use magnifying glass inspect forcing cone and main cylinder pin for a small shiny spot, wear mark. i think cylinder off axis

Ruger does make a heck of a good revolver. 👍
I have wanted a set of those SASS revolvers for years. But they are a little pricey, and other expenses always come up.
