Engine Bay is Too Hot - what to do

  • When the engine bay is too hot, it means excess friction is being produced. This leads to wasted energy that could have originally been used for moving the car. The test for the excess heat is when you open the hood/ bonnet of your car and feel a wall of heat from the engine bay. The car's components can be touched when the engine has been turned OFF. Usually worn bearing etc will produce scalding hotness, so be careful. You can use a heat detecting gun for safety.

This is the exact thing I was looking for . My engine started getting too hot but temperatures say it’s at normal operating temperatures. I used the wrong oil and then it started happening

In summer, I take out the front seal under the hood and cut the rear seal to make the engine cool down better. Rear seal only cut away from the AC and heater vents.

Engine bay get hot esp when car speed is below 20kmph or in stop go traffic. Otherwise at speeds above 50kmph, air keep engine bay relatively cool

I had exactly the same issue on my 2004 Honda Accord. Changing PCV valve fixed the issue.

Take the auxiliary belt off when it's cold and rotate with your hands everything that turns...alternator, pulleys, tensioner, ac compressor....anything that runs roughly needs changing.

Thanks, My 2008 Honda Civic is super hot in the engine bay, cant even touch some parts. The coolant is new, temps are ok but still something is super hot. I think my alternator or some other pulley bearing is toast. The 4 pin connector on the alternator broke like a biscuit due to the heat, I hope I can fix it this week, get the alternator checked.

Something like this is happening to my ST204 Celica... only because I didn't bother with sourcing a heat shield for the exhaust manifold. I'm afraid something might happened to engine's wiring... Currently a mechanic of mine is investigating the issue.

waits until minute 5:35 that the extra heat in the engine bay was caused by a worn pulley , bad alternator bearings, ac clutch

I had this issue on my 2.2 when i was thrashing it a bit and hit traffic and turned the engine off and on while stationary - i did hear some liquid sounds too - I changed the the oil and coolant and it has not seemed to be an issue since although my mpg isnt that great - did you find any other culprits since posting the video?

If I remember it was worn bearings on belt rollers, worn bearing on alternator changed thermostat to be sure.

Do the obvious and check coolant levels...check the temp gauge as an obvious one as well. If the temp gauge says normal, then work through all the points I suggested, for example alternator, pulleys, stuck AC compressor...all with engine running, but you testing it when engine stopped, of course. Don't want to be checking by hand if engine is running. A heat sensitive laser pointer/ reader/ meter will also help. Must be excess friction from somewhere. Good luck.

Research: locate fuel filter and pump. Try changing the fuel filter. Try changing the fuel pump likely located in the fuel tank.
