I decided to rewatch the first Dune movie in preparation for part 2 but after i experienced both of them back-to-back, binge read the first book in a few days and now after almost 2 months, I'm already halfway through God Emperor of Dune (btw...what a trip this fourth installment is proving to be)

    In the book, When Paul killed Jamis, he actually shed a tear, and showed his honor towards Jamis. He basically killed his "brother-to-be"

  • @the_stolen_show

    Just a small tidbit, when Paul is sitting by the Spice Harvester, he says “I recognize your footsteps, old man” he’s actually taking to the sand worm. Shai-Hulud can be translated from chakobsa as “Old Man of the Desert”. It’s a nice little nod to fans of the book.

    • @ethanos1765
      @ethanos1765 Місяць тому +25

      In that case its a double meaning, because earlier Gurney makes a comment that someone could imitate his stride. Paul also calls him an old man in that same scene. So when Paul says that line by the harvester, he was also acknowledging Gurney approaching him.
      Additionally, (SPOILER FOR PART 2 NEXT), when Paul reunites with Gurney, he says that same lie specifically to him. "I recognize your footsteps, old man."

    funfact : the movie is based on a book series (as mentioned in the credits) written in 1965 and is actually considered to be the work that defined the genre of sci fi. like even the story of star wars was heavily influenced by the 'dune'.
    And Hans Zimmer , the composer was actually the one in charge of the soundtrack of inception and interstellar so he's kinda like a huge deal and the director of dune is denis villeneuve who directed the blade runner and arrival movies

    • @pointblank2890
      @pointblank2890 Місяць тому +6

      Hanz and Denis were also HUGE Dune nerds when they were kids. So being able to collaborate on this now that they are highly skilled adults was a dream come true for them both

    • @sirperybLakeney
      @sirperybLakeney Місяць тому +1

      I think that saying it 'defined' sci fi is inappropriate; modern sci-fi lit long predates Dune (Asimov's Foundation series for instance, Arthur C Clark etc). It is the foremost classic of the genre though and as you mentioned had tremendous influence.

  • @twohorsesinamancostume7606
    @twohorsesinamancostume7606 Місяць тому +5

    So for time reasons there's some stuff from the book the movie didn't cover.
    So Thousands of years before the book/movie humanity was enslaved by computers and A.I., there was an uprising against said machines and after that war was successful, computers were outlawed. That's why you never see anyone using one in this universe. But you still need complex calculations done, which is where Mentats come in. These are people who are trained to basically be a living computer, which is what that eye roll thing that Hawat (tubby guy working for the Atreides) did during the handover ceremony on Caladan.
    Now I bring this up for a reason. In the book Leto had Paul trained as a Mentat while his mother was training him in Bene Gesserit techniques like the Voice. That makes Paul an extremely formidable ruler before the movie even starts and it's his Mentat training that lets him make any sort of sense of the visions he receives.
    Which brings me to the Weirding Way. It's basically a movement technique the Bene Gesserit came up with which lets you move so quickly in close quarters that anyone who sees you do it will think you teleported. In the book the Fremen were already extremely skilled fighters but when Paul and Jessica joined them the two taught the Fremen the Weirding Way, making them lethal in the extreme.

  • @PenTheMighty
    @PenTheMighty Місяць тому +37

    In regards to "The Voice" it's basically a thing that (mostly) only trained Bene Gesserit can do. It's an ability they have cultivated for millenia and used for their own ends. It basically commands a person to do something, anything. It's usually used to make people do things they otherwise wouldn't. Yes, this is where the Jedi Mind Trick originated as a concept as Lucas read Dune before writing Star Wars. Frank Herbert got the idea from his many female relatives whom he grew up around, kind of playing with the idea of matriarchy (this hits even harder in his later works but I won't spoil anything).
    Usually, men can't do it but Paul has been trained in this since he was child by his mother Jessica. Keep in mind he still doesn't quite get it right at his current age. That's how hard it is to do.
    From the movie's perspective, it appears to trigger "authority" instinct in people. Notice when Paul says it, he speaks with the voice of the Reverend Mother, whom Jessica was terrified of. When she uses it on Paul, his mother's voice is mingled in. It basically hits you in the "Mommy Voice" part of your brain. You know? The (Use your full name, where you KNOW you're in trouble) followed by a stern look from your mom? People hit with it notice they hardly remember the command, just that they are compelled to obey.
    Even in the books, it is used sparingly. It's heavily implied if a BG has to use the voice on you more than once, she's probably going to kill you.
    That's basically The Voice.

    the bene gesserit are trained to control every muscle, fiber and nerve in their body which is why they can use the voice! they use a certain sound frequency.
    the reverend mother was mad at jessica for bearing a son bc she did it on purpose. the bene gesserit can also control the sex of their baby.
    the bene gesserit is kinda like a breeding program and jessica went against it so…yeah
    the bene gesserit sisters usually don’t know their own parents bc they’re taken away to training at a very young age but there’s a whole lot of lore in that..

To see them translated to the big screen has been an unreal experience (I don't count the 1984 adaptation, which I saw in theatres the night it opened). There is so much to unpack...Villeneuve did a terrific job adapting this. And it looks amazing...

    It's a beautiful thing to half-trip yourself into a whole dimensional portal that takes you to a new place that you didn't know existed but you're really happy to be visiting and soaking up the details. So many universal themes in the book brought to this film adaptation that are impacting us fully right now, in dire ways. Also when you get possibly the best film director since Stanley Kubrick to run the show, and cast every sigma-tier actor to participate, and get one of the best working cinematographers to join, and enlist maestro Hans Zimmer (who, like the director, is a life-long fan of the books), then yeah it's gonna be something special. Part one is difficult for some because it's so much expos and setup, but Part two? Lordy bless--that thing goes off.

    The Voice is what you use every time you choose specific tones and phrasing to make people do what you want, except by the time of Dune the Bene Gesserit have had the better part of 10,000 years refining the skill. In the book it can be so effective your body obeys before you've consciously processed the command, that's why Paul's perspective goes all wonky when the reverend mother uses it on him

  • @jcs1025
    @jcs1025 Місяць тому +2

    Nice job. I’ve read this book series 4 or 5 times and still learn new things. ‘The Voice’ isn’t really a power like being psychic. It’s a skill that you can learn, although typically only the Bene Gesserit…an organization of only women…learn and use it.
    There’s also a lot of confusion, even through the second movie about what spice actually is, and why it is so important to the imperium. Spice basically expands your consciousness. It’s important to interstellar travel because without it, the navigators of the Spacing Guild would not be able to use their minds to be able to foresee safe paths between the stars. Therefore Navigation between worlds would be impossible. Also, the majority of the imperium is addicted to the stuff, as it extends life and allows people to live up to 200 years. Withdrawal from it is nasty. It also gives organizations like the Bene Gesserit and the Mentats their unique mental abilities, since advanced computers are outlawed. Without spice the current imperial civilization would fall.
    The last thing I’ll talk about is the Freman prophecy and the Bene Gesserit’s Kwisatz Haderach (The One, or literally ‘the shortening of the way’). There are two different things. The Fremen prophecy of the Lisan al’Gaib is manufactured, planted by the Bene Gesserit as something they could take advantage of and manipulate for their own advantage if needed. Paul abilities allow him to imperfectly see the future through his dreams and visions, thereby kind of slipping into this role of the Freman’s prophecy.

    Dune novels and the movies are so damn perfect because they still are relevant to this day. Many metaphors: such as spice fanatical religions, worshippers, false idols etc that can still be applied today. Frank Herbert the author of the books was WAY AHEAD of his time.
    Can't wait for Dune part 3.
    BTW: People underestimate Paul because he's young but they tend to forget that he was trained by Duncan and Gurney at a early age who are up there in the list as the best fighters in the universe. And his mother (amongst possibly others). He was being trained to be a warrior, a leader, a mentat (like a super computer) since it was outlawed to use computers and AI if Im correct.
    Thanks for this reaction sis! Can't wait for you to see part 2 because it really elevates the movie to a whole new level. This was just story building so far.

    Not many movies have floored me in the same way that the Dune movies have. Denis Villeneuve, man. His movies just hit different.
    About the source material, there's six novels in the main Dune series written by Frank Herbert:
    1. Dune (1965)
    2. Dune Messiah (1969)
    3. Children of Dune (1976)
    4. God Emperor of Dune (1981)
    5. Heretics of Dune (1984)
    6. Chapterhouse: Dune (1985)
    And these two movies only cover the first book! Denis Villeneuve has said that he'd do a third movie to cover the events of Dune Messiah but after that, who knows. The novels get WEIRD and I'm not sure how well you can even adapt them to the screen.
    Frank Herbert himself was sadly never able to finish his Dune saga. Afaik he had plans to conclude the story with a seventh and final novel but he passed away in 1986. His son Brian has taken up the mantle and is still writing new Dune to this day. But common consensus among fans is that the sequels and prequels by Brian Herbert don't reach the same level of quality as his father's work and many don't consider them canon.

    My first time on your channel...and I am so happy I came!
    I will not give spoilers but illuminate a few cool things. No spoilers...Oh, you should read the books! They are pretty dense and can be hard to get into, but Dune is to science fiction what Lord of the Rings is to fantasy.
    - Dr. Kynes in the book was a man, and the father of Zendaya's character Chani. They never explicitly say this in the movies, but I hope both actresses had this in their thoughts as they played their roles. As far as I was concerned, Sharon Duncan-Brewster was amazing as Kynes, and the movie gained a lot with the change...and compared to the book, she went out like a boss!
    - The book is filled with amazing truth bombs...and the script sprinkled in as many as possible. The Bene Gesseritt Litany Against Fear was a must, “I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is a little death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.”
    - There have been other adaptations of Dune. A 1984 big-screen version directed by David Lynch that tanked at the box office but is now a cult classic, and a Sci-Fi channel miniseries in 2000 that was successful enough to get a sequel miniseries in 2003. This is the first version that did Duncan Idaho justice. Jason Mamoa doesn't look like Duncan from the book, but the attitude and the badassery are there in spades. He stayed alive against the Saudaukar for as long as he did because he was a Swordmaster of the Ginaz, the only warriors who can really stand toe-to-toe with the Saudaukar.
    - Paul is better trained than most kids of the Great Houses...his mother's Bene Gesseritt training, as well as the military training by Duncan and Gurney, but also from Thufir Hawat (Stephen McKinley Henderson). Thufir is a Mentat, a human computer whose mind has been trained in logic and to calculate everything at vast speeds...this goes back to events in the distant past that saw the destruction of all thinking machines, forcing humans to train themselves and expand their abilities like the Mentats, the Bene Gesseritt, and the Spacing Guild. This is why his eyes went white at one point...he was making calculations and summoning information for Duke Leto.
    - Chakobska, the Fremen language, had a few words in the books, but the linguist who created Dothraki for Game of Thrones was hired to create Chakobska for the film.
    - The film's editor, Joe Walker, was the voice of the filmbooks that Paul reads. He won the Oscar for Film Editing for Dune.
    - Both director Denis Villeneuve and composer Hans Zimmer were huge fans of the novel since they were kids. The film was a lifelong ambition for Villeneuve, and when it was announced, Zimmer campaigned for the job to score the film. Zimmer also won an Oscar for his score.
    - The film was nominated for 10 Oscars...it won 6: Score, Editing, Sound, Cinematography, Production Design, and Visual Effects. It lost Best Picture, Adapted Screenplay, Costume Design, and Make-Up. It was shut out of Best Director...which was a crime as far as I was concerned.
    - Frank Herbert wrote six novels in the Dune universe and they can get extremely weird, however, they are also have a lot to say about our world today. Frank's son Brian has co-written another 14 novels in the Dune universe. There will be a Dune 3, based on the second novel Dune Messiah...which basically ends Paul's story. One thing to keep in mind...“I wrote the Dune series because I had this idea that charismatic leaders ought to come with a warning label on their forehead: "May be dangerous to your health."" - Frank Herbert

      @@BankMoviegoer Sure, but it just felt wasteful to spend so much on Paul learning stuff he already knows or figures out quickly with his mentat training. It's also kind of a betrayal of the name Muad'dib (wise in the ways of the desert).
      For Part 1 to try so hard to stick to the book for Part 2 to actively undo some of the writing was a bizarre choice.

    Long time Dune fan here I read the book in the late '70s.
    So the voice isn't a mystical or magical power It is a skill that it can be developed. Much like when you use a certain tone of voice on your dog to keep him from eating out of the garbage can you use a certain inflection and rhythm with harmonies and undertones to make people automatically obey you. This is a technique developed over thousands of years by theBene Gesserit. They also can read individuals body language and intentions by careful observation That's what Jessica does with the house made candidate. She could tell by her body language that she was carrying a weapon. And she knew enough about the weapon to make it sound like she was making a prediction.
    The Bene Gesserit purposely designed The prophecy on Dune so that a member of their organization could easily fulfill the 'predictions' They were vaguely worded so that if something happened close to what they say it can be interpreted as being true. There is no magic here It's pure manipulation and a scam. It is as Chini says away to control people and make them worship you.

    While I enjoy the sound mixing on The Voice, I have issue with the way the new movies use it.
    In the book, The Voice is much more subtle - a command offered as a suggestion or idea, making the hearer think they want to do what is asked. Most don't know they are being affected without training and resisting it is even harder, but it's so much more than a magic barked order. For as much subtlety as Denis tries to put in, being so ham-handed with this particular aspect is odd to me.
    Check out the 1984 Dune for David Lynch's for a weird interpretation, or the 2000s SciFi miniseries Frank Herbert's Dune for the most book accurate.

    "Not exactly" perfectly understood! This series is super dense and as a result, rubs a lot of people the wrong way. You caught most of the details faster than many with previous experience of the lore or source material. Great job! There are tons of books, but a significant number of us fans consider the first 6 books (the only ones written by Frank Herbert) to be the most important, and the rest to be non-canon. Movie part 1 and 2 are book #1 and they just confirmed the third movie which is book #2. No spoilers, I just recommend keeping an open mind. This is not a hero's story most people think it is. This is not Disney nor do they have the capacity to tell this story. Much like real life, the Dune universe does not allow fairytale "good guys" to exist. I am so excited for the ride you're about to take.

    There’s six original books that were written by Frank Herbert, his son has continued the series. In general his son is not regarded as being as good a writer.
    The second book is called Dune Messiah, and Denis Villeneuve has said he plans to adapt that next. I’m very excited for that, I honestly think Dune Messiah is better than the first book.
    Next books written by Frank Herbert after that are Children of Dune, God Emperor of Dune, Heretics of Dune, and Chapterhouse Dune. There’s a 3,000 year time skip between Children of Dune and God Emperor.

    “Fermen” as you pronounce it is not quite right. It is “Fremen”, a contraction of the words “Free Men.” In their history they were a population that was not free. They escaped control of the Empire and made their way to Arrakis. Over time they became known as “The Fremen.” Their history is one of the reasons that they shun the Empire and its Great Houses.
