For those familiar with the book, showing that little mouse was a nice treat, its very significant.
One of the things that confuses reactors who have not read the books is Paul's visions. He sees possible futures like branches on a tree. While said futures might not come to pass he still gains knowledge from those futures.

@YlvatheViqueen this move and Dune 2 cover the events of the first book, so that's all you really need to focus on for these movies. Be prepared, it's a dense book with a dictionary in the back to explain the terminology.
@@YlvatheViqueen There is another good description, in that it is like he is walking up and down the sand dunes. When he is on top, he can see far, but sometimes he is in a valley, and the future is hard to see because he is in a moment where there is a lot of uncertainty.
I thought they explained this perfectly in the movie.
If I remember correctly, dreams are explained in the box scene; in the vision of Jamis teaching Paul and the understanding at the end of the film that this vision will no longer come true; in the vision of Paul dying/taking a life.

In one of the visions, Jamis tells Paul that he will "show him the ways of the desert". One could say that Jamis truly did show him the ways of the desert. In a way, he was Paul's first Fremen teacher
Agreed. The fight to the death is the way of the desert. Not what we would think but it still makes sense.
The vision in itself is litterally its first teaching.
Exactly he taught Paul the most important lesson of the Desert.
In a following scene it shows Jamis' body/coffin leading them into the desert
I wish they would have included Paul's shedding of tears after, The Fremen saw it as such a tribute to his moisture.
The symbolism of the bull's head: Duke Leto Atreides' father had a penchant for bull fighting. It was a favored past time of his, even though it was arrogant, dangerous. It was about the honor. He was killed not by an assassin, not by disease, but gored by a bull in the ring.
That is the head of the bull that killed Leto's father. A reminder.
For Leto, he knew coming to Arrakis was dumb. Dangerous. Yet the call came, and he went. Duty compelled and honor-bound. And he died for it.
The name Harkonnen in Finnish means bull or something along those lines😏
Leto's father tried to take the bull by the horns and was found wanting, the same fate befell Leto.
The whole Arrakis situation just really made me feel like it was really easy to make them powerless with the right scheme. They know he can’t deny taking control of Arrakis due to honor, and as soon as he sealed the deal (literally) it was over for him. Due to the trap that was laid. So really all they had to do was Arrakis to him, and the rest was easy.
You are one of the only reactors I have seen who recognized that during the meeting with the Duke, Stilgar spitting was a sign of respect. Most people remain grossed-out by it, even after the explanation.
Which is odd because Duncan immediately explains that its a respect custom due to how precious water is.
It feels as if an average viewer is not necessarily accepting of cultures different from one they know, hence the judgement.
20:25 They probably ARE hands. Dr. Yueh later tells Leto that the Harkonnens are taking is wife apart like a doll. I believe this spider-thing was added to suggest that this is Dr. Yueh's wife, or that she had met a similar fate.
Although the spider-thing doesn't appear in the books, I think it does do a very good job of showing what we're told about the Harkonnens in the novels: they are vile.
The fact that the spider-thing responded to the Reverend Mother's use of the Voice is very strong evidence that the spider-thing is a human that has been taken apart and put back together.
Harkonnens are very similar to the Eldari in Warhammer, they are basically a warning of what can happen when you have a perfect futuristic utopia where you have everything you could ever want, so you keep pushing down darker more depraved paths to gain excitement and meaning in life.
In the book Duke Leto's father, "the old duke", was an avid bullfighter. He eventually died fighting a bull. Duke Leto had the bull killed, stuffed and mounted as a last reminder of his father. He even had the bulls horns treated with a special sealant that would preserve the old dukes blood, still on the horns years later. In the book Jessica hates the bulls head but Leto insists it remain in the main dining hall. For me the bulls head served as a constant reminder of the fact that even the highest born can fall by humble means. I think Leto keeps It as a reminder of both the old dukes bravery, hubris and of Atreides mortality.
And Leto succumbed to the same hubris. He went to Arrakis pretty wide-eyed, but he still didn't grasp the full extent of the trap he was walking into. I thought it was really cool Villeneuve made that such a prominent motif.
@@dan32321 Oh I disagree very much about Leto's hubris. It is true he didn't grasp the full lengths the emperor would go to to destroy house atreides but I see no evidence that this was due to any sort of unchecked arrogance. Quite the opposite in fact as glimpse from his POV chapters that he had some doubts and much fear for his family's safety. But NOBODY imagined how far the Emperor and the Baron would go. In the books many characters were surprised by the depth of the emperors scheme. Thufir Hawat ruminates on the shock of it... "The size of the attack struck his mind like a physical blow. For a full attack they'd expected no more than 10 brigades. But there were more than two thousand ships down on arrakis. More than a hundred brigades, TEN LEGIONS! The entire spice income of arrakis for 50 year might just cover the cost of such a venture. It might. I underestimated what the Baron was willing to spend on attacking us, Hawat thought. I have failed my duke." Even Thufir hawat, a legendary Mentat valued by both atreides and harkonnen, simply could not realistically imagine that the depth of the emperors fear of House Atreides would move him into such direct support of the attack. When you add that lack of insight to the fact he was given a direct command by the emperor, Leto had very little options in his choice to go to Arrakis
@@MrAnthimos112 Maybe hubris is the wrong word, at least by the textbook definition of the word. Was Leto an arrogant or incompetent man? Not at all. And he certainly didn't have many options. But perhaps overconfident in his capacity to survive on Arrakis? Absolutely.
The fact of the matter is, despite knowing full well they were walking into a trap, his organization failed to obtain a full view of the chessboard they were playing on, and as a result Leto grossly miscalculated their ability to confront the threat they were facing. It not only cost him his life but came within inches of wiping out his entire house in one night.
Which is why Villeneuve kept hammering that imagery. His father thought he could defeat the bull; he was wrong. Leto thought he could defeat the Harkonnen -- which I believe is ox or some other similar animal in Finnish, so the symbolism is obvious -- and he was wrong too.
Kind of like an NFL team that thought they studied enough film and had their opponent figured out but ended up getting demolished. Your intentions were good, but you still failed. Such was what happened to the Atreides.
@@dan32321 Fair enough. I just believe that Hubris refers to arrogance. At most Leto could be accused of ignorance of his true situation. Any sense of being able to survive comes from that ignorance, not any innate arrogance.
@@dan32321He was fully expecting an attack, he was absolutely not expecting his own people to betray him to pave the way. At the end of the day the shields dropping in the middle of the night was something no one could have predicted.
12:25 Yes, they do speak a bunch of languages.
The English we hear in the film is meant to be "Galach", the official language of the Imperium. It is descended mostly from English and Slavic languages. The Fremen are speaking "Chakobsa." In-universe, the only people who know that language are the Fremen and the Bene Gesserit. Chakobsa is descended from Arabic and a secret language used by medieval knights from Circassia (which was a country along the northeast shore of the Black Sea in Russia). The Chakobsa words in the novel have been expanded into a "neo-chakobsa" language. The Sardaukar are speaking a clipped/distorted version of English. The throat singing is a language constructed for the film. Before Paul meets the reverend mother, he and Dr. Yeuh are speaking Mandarin Chinese. The sign language you see being used is "Atreides Battle Language". I don't know if the film used modern sign language as a basis for it.
37:01 That desert mouse is descended from the kangaroo mouse, which is native to the south-western United States.
The Fremen call that mouse "muad'dib" or "the teacher of boys". One of the reasons the mouse is respected by the Fremen is that is makes its own water; water condenses on its ears, and it uses its forepaws to pull it down to its mouth.
Muad'dib is the star of the show.

13:32 The test/trail Paul is going through is a Bene Gesserit "Test of Humanity". The test is normally given to women who are becoming Bene Gesserit.
Jessica is terrified because she went through the same test when she was younger. She knows exactly what Paul is experiencing. She is terrified that he will fail the test and die.
What makes this worse is that the Reverend Mother realized after the test that she wanted Paul to fail, and extended the test far beyond what she needed to.
As a side note, what Jessica is repeating is the Bene Gesserit "Litany Against Fear". You can find slightly different versions on the internet. It's been a hot minute since I read Dune, but I believe the correct version is:
I must not fear
Fear is the mind-killer
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration
I will face my fear
I will permit it to pass over me and through me
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing
Only I will remain
19:23 I'm pretty sure the guard in the background was an invention of the movie to help the viewer understand what is happening. I seem to recall that in the book, Jessica was alone with the Shadout Mapes. The crysknife isn't just sacred; it is custom to kill anyone who sees it if they are not Fremen.
When the Shadout Mapes asks Jessica the meaning of the crysknife, it is a test that Jessica almost failed.
The crysknife is made from the tooth of a sandworm. The Fremen saw the sandworms as physical embodiments of God. They have several names for sandworms. One is "Shai Hulud". Another name is "The Maker".
Jessica didn't know any of that. What she did know was that the Fremen secretly spoke Chakobsa. When the Shadout Mapes asked her what the meaning of the crysknife was, Jessica took a chance and gave the Galach (English) translation of the Chakobsa word for a knife: "a maker of death."
One of the words the Shadout Mapes was looking for was "Maker". Jessica's Bene Gesserit training allowed her to see that the key word was "maker" before she finished the entire phrase. This is why you see Jessica cut herself off after she said "a maker"
If I recall correctly, if you unsheathe a crysknife blood has to be spilled or it will deteriorate/disintegrate. Think it was something to do with moisture. I think Leto was presented with one as well at a party/galla they were hosting and cut his hand before sheathing it. I could be misremembering though, it has been a while since I read the books.
Out of the many reactors I've seen watch this film, you are the first that I recall voicing an observation of the imperialist implications from the very start. Very astute! And refreshing! My first reaction I've seen of yours, and I doubt it will be the last.

Denis Villeneuve nailed it I feel. Of course there are some differences due to the change in medium, but really, the tone and feel is chef's kiss. This was just the first half of the first book so maybe don't read it before watching the 2nd movie unless you don't care about spoilers for the channel. Otherwise go ahead. It's an absolute classic.
True I'll probably hold off on reading it! Maybe just look up some info about the world so I'm not as lost for the second movie!
Denis Villeneuve has done for Dune what Peter Jackson did for Lord of the Rings. There were some changes, but they were only ones required by a screen adaptation. They have both remained faithful to the books.

Cliff notes to understanding Dune series for those who haven't read the books.
1. Computers are outlawed because of a previous AI war.
2. For males, the spice lets them see the future. In this way, the Guild Navigators can predict safe paths for FTL flight.
3. For females, the spice lets them see the past. In this way, they can study past learning and skills, but only from female forbearers.
4. For intense calculations, Mentats are trained to like a savant and use a red berry just to accomplish this, which stains their lips.
5. Lasers were common weapons until shields were invented. If you shoot a shield with a laser, one, the other, or both explode like a large bomb. Thus, allot of swords and knives.
6. Repulsors (makes things float) and shields cause vibrations, which attracts worms, so on Arrakis, they use ornithopters (which have flapping wings).
7. The Choam company, which has a monopoly on the spice trade, is made up of the great houses with the Emperor being the CEO.
That should be enough to get you through all the stuff they don't mention in the TV mini-series and movies.
Points 2 and 3 are wildly incorrect. Besides the Guild Navigators part.

@@thss3103 From the books, points 2 and 3 are correct. Ghani is overtaken from one of her ancestors, and so does Leto II. The entire point of the Kwisatz Haderach was to create a male that had both the male half (prescience) as well as the female half (ancestor memory)
@@brianermovick5944 I’ve read the books. It’s absolutely incorrect to say that spice lets males see the future. Paul is one of only a few prospects the BG have, who have been very conditioned to be who they are. It’s not like every dude can use spice and see the future.

Part from the books was Paul shedding tears for one he killed. His water. It was a significant thing to the Fremen.

16:40 There's a cool thing about shields in Dune that you don't see in other SciFi: The reason you can breathe in a shield is because is allows slow moving objects to pass through.
Which is why some of the poison still hit the Baron.
47:30 Paul and Jessica joining the Fremen at this point has some unusual details. Jamis was angry and invoked the "Amtal Rule".
The "Amtal Rule" is a practice of testing something to the point of its destruction. Much like a manufacturer doing endurance tests on windshield wipers; they keep running the wipers until they fall apart.
The Fremen are perfectionists, and use the Amtal Rule often.
However, Jamis invoking the Amtal Rule is a bit more nuanced.
Jamis is angry at Paul, but he doesn't have a legitimate reason to call him out. However, Stilgar gives him the opening he needs to attack Paul when he calls Jessica a "sayyadina". (Sayyadina are lower-ranking Fremen priestesses.)
Stilgar is making the judgement that Jessica is probably a sayyadina, and will be treated as such until they reach Sietch Tabr and she can be tested. But Jamis invokes the Amtal Rule to test Jessica immediately.
However, Stilgar and Jamis both know that a sayyadina can not be harmed. By invoking the Amtal Rule, Jamis forces Jessica to produce a champion to fight for her.
Since Paul is obviously going to be Jessica's champion, Jamis gets what he wanted: a chance to kill Paul.
Jamis was humiliated that a mere boy knocked him aside and eluded him.

One of the best Sci-fi movies ever made and One of the best adaptations of Frank Herbert's classic novel.
I highly recommend the documentary, Jodorowsky's DUNE from 2014, a 90 minute behind the scenes special on what happened to Alejandro Jodorowsky's unmade adaptation of the novel.

In the books, Paul describes his visons as looking out over the desert. You can see the tops of the sand dunes, but you do not know what lies between you and the dune until you get closer. In the movie this is done by showing different scenes as alternate futures. He sees Chani, he see's them kiss, he see's her kill him. He see's Jamis and they are friends, He see's Jamis kill him, he see's him killing Jamis.
The Lore in the Dune book is incredible. I have read Dune five times and I still find something new that I didn't notice before.
The way I read the last fight (if you pay attention to the subtitles) Is that by killing Jamis, Paul kills a part of himself. Which makes room for the Kwizats Haderach to emerge within him. Or maybe in a less metaphorical sense, Paul killed his innocence which will allow him to grow into the hardened leader he’s “destined” to be (as he’s meant to lead this Holy War). So the way I see it, the whole film it’s said he *could* be the one, but this final fight solidified it. His path is now set.
It was glossed over in the movie, but Paul isn't just Bene Gesserit from his mothers training, but also a Mentat, which is a human computer. I think the only Mentat's we saw was Tufir who worked for Paul's dad, and I forget his name who worked for the Baron. Was the dude who went to Sardukar training world to confirm the emperor's troops would help the Harkonnens. The fact that Paul is both of these things is bonkers.

This might be one of the only reactions I've seen with someone just rolling with it when the Reverend Mother says, "You were told to bear only daughters." I've seen a lot of, "Pfft, like she's supposed to be able to control that.." instead of realizing the implication of her saying that, which would be, "They can control that??"
“Fear is the mind killer” mantra has been my favorite since I read the book when I was in high school over 35 years ago. You did so good hearing the “poems”. They all have such deep meaning.

the symbolism of the bull is mentioned by Paul when they were on Caladan, he mentioned how his grandfather fought them in the ring (like on old earth). and the bull is symbolic to greek and roman mythology. The atriedies line goes all the way back to greek and roman times.
...the little desert mouse is called Muad'Dib - the noises it makes in this movie are from a squirrel and were recorded in Sweden by Dani Connor (she has her own YT channel)...
48:56 Frank Herbert wrote 6 books (in the series) and one short story. But in total there are like 17 novels, 13 short stories, and 13 graphic novels/comic books (including one that is a series and still new ones are coming out.
There are also 8 other Books, that are making of, and encyclopedias of the universe of "Dune".
Sandworms eat sand plankton, sand trout (little leech like creatures) and smaller worms.
Their relationship to one another you’ll find out eventually.

Part One in Imax shook the theater, its one of those movie going experiences I will NEVER forget.
3:31 "A whiles away" is a while longer away than is apparent from the screen adaptations. It's the year 10191 AG, meaning After Guild, which refers to the establishment of the Spacing Guild's monopoly on space travel. That happened in 11075 AD. Dune takes place in 21266 AD.
I love Dune so much. The helmets on the guys that come with the Herald of the Change maintain an atmosphere saturated with the spice. They’re Guild Navigators. The cylindrical ship shown above Caladan is a Heighliner. The navigators who pilot Heighliners no longer look human, and consume immense amounts of spice. They breathe it, drink it, and eat it.
Highly recommend reading the book. They hew pretty closely to it in the movie. It will add a lot of depth.
Its so cool when in the book Paul asks Leto if they are mutated and Leto says no one is allowed to see the actual, full mutated navigators. Spacing Guild has to be one of my favorite sci-fi organizations ever.
You commented on the music a lot... it's practically a character in the film in places. It makes seeing the first film in IMAX a singular experience, and I have no doubt Part 2 will be similarly impressive, so hopefully you can find it in IMAX. There's a good IMAX theater in Bellingham WA if you're still in BC, CA, and several in and around Seattle, but I'd be shocked if there aren't some around Vancouver.
BTW, the book is the best selling science fiction novel of all time. The first 3 or 4 sequels are interesting but they fall off pretty quickly after that, esp after the author's son takes over.
The one drawback of the movie is that it could not tell you the why and how of everything. You are sort of in the story of Dune without the background of the galaxy lore. The book is great and the basis of Star Wars that Lucas pulled from. Dune is complex and this movie is about the first 100 pages of the first book. It gets wild from here and who knows if other movies will be made to go to the next books.
Yeah I agree I havent read the book yet still. I will after part 2. But knowing a bit more about why computers arent used and people have evolved to be doctors/calculators etc. Would've been helpful on first watch... But then again. Its not needed for the story to actually know this. But once you know its a cool detail.
I did feel like I was thrown into the world but I did enjoy the ride! I'll brush up on some more details so I'm not as lost in the second one haha
@@YlvatheViqueen Focus on characters and themes. This is a difficult read. Herbert was on his own hallucinogens. Good and bad are very hard to see. A key for you is that Herbert also had his mind on Saudi Arabia and the Middle East so you share some experiences.

Its a good read, for the question of what happens when of the Fremen die, "The flesh is his own, but his water belongs to the tribe"
32:51 This scene highlights an improvement over David Lynch's 1984 Dune. In the novels, Jessica is incredibly deadly. David Lynch's dune downplayed this.
But Bene Gesserit only use these skills when absolutely necessary. They don't want to let anyone else know just how powerful they are. If they did, the Emperor would likely hunt them to extinction to remove that threat.
So about the shields.
The movie doesn’t do the best job explaining how exactly they work and it is very important. Essentially anything going above a very slow speed is automatically blocked from entering the area covered by the shield, and the reason that exception is there is because otherwise it would literally block oxygen from getting to you.
However that exception has led to multiple ways to get around it over time, for example the fighting technique shown in the movie where you fight at normal intense speeds and then slow your attack to get through the shield. Another example is the Poison dart and land mines, they are designed to go very slowly once they reach their target, effectively ‘drilling’ through the shield as going too fast would just deflect them off.
Am I correctly seeing some Motherland: Fort Salem on your wall? Absolutely loved that TV series, so sad it was cancelled! Welcome to the Duniverse! Enjoy the books! 💙

"Why do those guys remind me of Monsters Inc." When I saw this movie the first time, as soon as I saw the Harkonnans in the hazmat suits, all I could think in my head was "2319! 2319!" LOL
The Books are absolutely awesum and a totally reccomendable read.
I love how there are tons of things going on in Pauls mind, but Villeneuve doesn't try to explain the visions or his Mentant training. That is a great choice as it would only confuse the audience. For years, they said the movie couldnt be done as so much takes place only in Pauls mind!
Love people finding this fantastic adventure! Not long till Dune Part 2 now!
31:20 The thing to keep in mind here is that Duncan is fighting Harkonnen soldiers. Compared to Duncan, these Harkonnens have the skills of drunken weekend warriors. On top of that, the Harkonnens aren't very committed; notice how the other Harkonnens back away instead of fighting Duncan.
Which is why they needed help from the sardaukar.
34:00 The situation with Dr. Yueh is a bit more complicated.
Dr. Yueh is trained as a Suk doctor. He has received conditioning that was supposed to prevent him from being able to harm anyone. However, the Baron was able to use the torture of Dr. Yueh's wife to break that conditioning.
Dr. Yueh is very much at war with himself; his conditioning to do no harm is at odds with his desire to kill the Baron and free his wife.
This movie is a great example of what happens when the people making the movie, are fans of the source material. This is VERY faithful. The Director has announced that he'll go up to the 3rd novel (I think), at that point, it's likely to continue with different directors. To say the Dune saga is epic, is an understatement. It takes place over CENTURIES. It's many political threads, wheels within wheels within wheels, alliances and betrayals.
If you wonder how people got to Arrakis in the first place if spice is needed for space travel.
They used to navigate with super computers.
But then there was a big war involving misuse of computers and now there is a religious ban on AI.
"the difference between men and beasts is thinking. If you let a machine do your thinking for you,, you're an animal."
So now they need navigators high on spice to guide the ship by seeing the future.
This is also why the duke has an assistant trained from birth to act as a living calculator.
Hans Zimmer loves to mix the music in with the sound effects. It creates this incredible, immersive soundscape.
“Unique music” indeed. Being 20,000 years in the future, Zimmer wanted to have a truly unique sound palate.
So he INVENTED every instrument used in this soundtrack.
Except for the bagpipes, which Vilnue insisted be included.
You do not have to read six books, nor any of his son’s sequels. Frank Herbert’s story was DONE with the first book. Only his publisher convinced him to write sequels, and that only because the publisher wanted mo money.
Paul has been trained from birth in three of the most advanced and demanding disciplines in human history: The Bene Gesseret, masters of psychology and control of the body. The Mentats, humans trained as supercomputers (after AI turns on us and is forbidden to exist) and as a swordsman of the Ginaz by Duncan Idaho, who can outfight even the terrifying Sardaukar. He was also mentored by Gurney Halleck, the most feared general in the galaxy. and Dr Yueh who was among the most learned men of his time
And he is Leto's son.
16:46 By this point, Earth had been destroyed and, for most people, was only a legend. There is a discussion in the books about very tiny books used by space travelers, and a suggestion that smaller, light-weight items were preferred when traveling. Bagpipes tend to weigh 5 to 11 pounds, and are smaller when the bag is not full of air.
While not as small as a flute, I imagine a bagpipe was more likely to be seen on a spaceship than something like a tuba.
Gurney Halleck played a "baliset" which was a descendant of a zither.
The “big helmets” are there for a reason.

Jamis and Paul would have been friends if Paul hadn't stepped on the drum sand. When he attracted the worm, Jamis had to plant a thumper to draw it away. This caused Jamis to lose any respect he would have had if Paul had avoided the drum sand.
I don't recall if this was spelled out in the book.

Loving the book so far and watching part one before beginning reading has helped me greatly understand all of the additional world building that the book is doing. 26:35 Sandworms are kinda like whales. There's microscopic organisms that feed off the spice in the sand so the worms "swim" around gobbling it all up. They filter out the organisms to eat all day every day.

The “ancient Greek vibes” harmonize with the fact that the Atreides trace their ancestry to the House of Atreus.
The fact that technology hasn't developed more is because thousands of years ago "thinking machines" got out of hand and after defeating them humans decided to ban development of artificial technology and focused on human and other organic development. What's omitted in the film is another thread with the Tleilaxu and their genetic and biological machination ('biological technology') that became important in the long run, but are a sidestory in the first books. Frank Herbert though had made notes and after his death his son has continued the universe.
Almost everything in the books revolves around evolution in one form or another.
The prequel books are also very helpful to really appreciate the richness of this story.
And the taboos are kept alive on purpose by the Bene -Jesuit- Gesserit and ruling familes because it facilitates a feudally structures society along with a focus on human development.

5:50 you said you didnt like the orange tank helmets. In the books they are members of the spacing guild who over thousands of years turned from human into weird creatures that are reliant on spice. The tanks are orange because of the spice in them. They also describe them in the book with orange tanks.
"What do they do when someone dies?" The Fremen take the body back to the Sietch and render the water out of it in what's called a death still. In the Fremen Culture, 'a man's flesh is his own, but his water belongs to the tribe'

Man I have crazy admiration for this lady, she's beautiful, intelligent and can hold a straight face through the goriest of scenes. I found her channel some years ago for a Vikings reaction then stayed for Expanse, she doesn't upload as frequently as others but thats because (in case you haven't figured it out yet) she's an outdoorsy kinda gal and also music gigs. If she didn't do all that she wouldn't be who she is and therefore I don't complain. Feel very blessed that she decided to have a channel and give us a chance to watch her reactions.

Great Reaction. One thing that is made more clear in the book, is that the Doctor understands that in his deal with the Baron, that the Baron will betray him, his wife will be killed, and he will be as well, but its the only way to free her from the agony of the torture she's going through.

31:54 Dr. Yueh's wife was a Bene Gesserit. The Bene Gesserit do have extreme control over their bodies. They can adjust their metabolisms, detect if they are pregnant after only a few weeks after conception, etc.
They have such control over their bodies that they can commit suicide by mentally stopping their heart.
But it is unclear if his wife committed suicide or was tortured to death by the Baron. I like to think that she committed suicide.
Jessica's character in the first book & part 1 movie has alot to unpack. Each of the royal houses has a bene gesserrit that lives with them. Some like in the 80's version when you see Mohiam talk to the emperor he asks she be truthsayer to him; most of the Ladies of the order are truth sayers and are there to assist the king/lord etc. Some are there are concubines. (in the previous book when jessica meets Leto for the first time they fall in love etc, these books were written from frank herbert's notes) and we can see the loving bond she has with Leto; usually the Bene Gesseritt when they send a concubine to a home to have one of the children for within the breeding program it is supposed to stay the gender they tell them to have; but since they have the ability to change things in their bodies down to the molecular level Jessica made sure she gave Leto a son. She is well aware of the Bene Gesseritt's Missionaria Protectiva (Prophecy/message that was set up on dune by the order) and feels that Paul could be the one and pushes for this to proceed. She goes through so much and it's very hard for her.
The Freman will extract the water from those who die. Dune itself is one book, but there are more books which continues the story. the 2000 Mini-Series "Dune" does explain this World pretty good. But of course, the book explains even more.
46:10 Good job! You caught on to something in the books that isn't covered in the film. Paul has been trained to use a shield. To penetrate the shield, you have to slow your attack to get the blade past the shield.
In this fight without shields, he is missing Jamis by a fraction of a second.
Paul had spent his life training to fight. The earlier fight scene with Gurney Halleck makes it quite clear that Paul's training was intended to make him a lethal fighter.
Now, Jessica covers for Paul by saying he's never killed someone before. She tells this lie to placate Stilgar, who is disturbed by what seems to be Paul toying with Jamis.
In the novel, Paul didn't contradict Jessica, but he did say to her privately "you know what it was."
This is one of those changes made to adapt the novel to the film.
The book is DEEEEEEEP. If you liked the worldbuilding and background lore of this world, and of all the other Great Houses, you will be in heaven reading the novel. It's one of the greatest works of fiction ever written. Denis Vilenueve did an admirable job making this film (well, part 1 of it anyway), but there is so much that could never fit into a movie or even show adaption, because so much of what is truly fascinating about all the characters is what they are THINKING, which Frank is writing from an omniscient narrator's perspective (from anyone in the scene's mind or perspective). Highly recommend reading at least the first Novel before seeing part 2!
So, House Atreides traces its lineage all the way back to House Atreus, who was the father of the ancient Greek King Agamemnon who fought in the Trojan War. The bull was Atreus' house sigil.
The movie doesn’t explain yueh very well. He truly loves Paul and his family. He knows his betrayal is unforgivable. But when he says they take her apart like a doll. He is being literal. He knows he will die and so will his wife. He just wants the torture to stop
The mention of ancient Greek vibes is interesting. House Atredies claim descent from Agamemnon in Greek mythology. He was son of Atreus and the descendants of Atreus are called Atreides
"What do these sandworms live off of". Thank you, Ylva, for asking that question. It is slapping all viewers of similar movies in the face constantly, but nobody ever raises the question. What do orcs and goblins eat in the Lord of the Rings trilogy? There are limitless numbers of them portrayed living undergound in Moria, but we are never shown how they get sustenance. I suppose it is an unimportant detail not worthy of screen time, but it still always bothers me when I'm busy dutifully trying to sustain my suspension of disbelief.
15:15 A couple of things here:
1. Leto and Jessica are not married. Technically, Jessica is Leto's concubine, but Leto was never going to marry anyone else. Leto stayed unmarried so that other houses could have the (vain) hope that they could make an alliance with Leto through marriage.
2. The novel doesn't directly say so, but the impression I got was that he wanted a son, but he wasn't all Henry the 8th about it. A son would certainly be politically useful, but I think Leto would have been glad to have a son or a daughter. But that is nothing more that the impression I got. I could certainly be wrong.
16:20 Ostensibly, the Atreides are being sent to Arrakis to rule it as a fief. Thank of it as Leto becoming a governor of the planet.
It is possible there is some added nuance to this. The Atreides and Harkonnens had an ancient blood feud. There is a phrase used in the novel "...take control of Arrakis and end all dispute" that leads me to believe the change of fief was meant to finally settle this blood fued.
But in reality, the Emperor created a situation that would destroy the Atreides and greatly weaken the Harkonnens. The Harkonnens had gotten insanely wealthy from managing spice harvesting on Arrakis. I seem to recall that he was wealthier than the Emperor himself. Leto had become popular with the Landsraad (kind of like a parliament). If Leto gained enough support in the Landsraad, he could oppose the Emperor.
By taking away spice wealth from the Harkonnens and giving it to the Atreides, the Emperor knew that the Harkonnens would try to wipe out the Atreides and take back spice production. The Emperor also knew that the Baron would drain his wealth due to the Spacing Guild's extra fees for transporting combat troops. The Emperor also sent some of his Sardaukar troops to make certain the Atreides didn't survive.

The trason for the normal names is that humanity has progressed very far in to the future. So some things from the past remain.
Its set onwards from 10,000 Common Era
20000, actually. That 10000 from the beginning counts from the date on, when the spacing guild was founded. Or in other words, the guild appears in about 10000 Years from now on, and Dune happens 10000 Years later from there on.

It was thought this was an unmake able movie because the lore was so deep you’d need a 10 hour movie. The crazy thing is some one almost did that.

Nailing down the specifics of certain things is complicated by the reference material. There are:
1. The novels written by Frank Herbert between 1965 to 1985.
2. An encyclopedia written by Willis E. McNelly that was authorized by Frank Herbert.
3. The novels written by Frank Herbert's son Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson.
The encyclopedia is the biggest complication. One of the themes in Frank Herbert's novels is that the official narrative is often far different than the truth. When you read Dune, you'll notice excerpts from fictional books at the start of each chapter. I believe Frank included these partly to make the world-building seem more realistic, but to also highlight the idea of conflicting narratives.
The difference between the official narrative/unofficial narrative/truth is a big part of the 4th book, God Emperor of Dune.
I seem to recall that Frank Herbert wrote the forward to the Dune Encyclopedia. I'm pretty sure he stated that while the Dune Encyclopedia is authorized, he would keep his own ideas. I take that to mean he was using the Dune Encyclopedia to hammer home the idea that official narratives can't be trusted.

The time line on the boos is a little weird, this movie is the first half of the book one, then for the books 2 and 3, there is 10 yeas between each one and for the 4 and 5 is like 3000 years of difference. In the books the bull head is the one that killed Paul's grandparent, so it was charged with memories.
Paul sees multiple versions of the future. What he wanted to avoid was the holy war fought in his name. But certain events forces him to walk down the path he choose, which will lead to a holy war where billions of people will die.
This is not a story about a hero rescuing oppress people. It's a cautionary tale about, power, religion and following charismatic leaders. Of course the book is a lot more layered.

I believe the the weird "spider-like" creature is in fact Dr Yueh's wife after the Baron has tortured and experimented on her.

Well, they put the dead body into a deathstill and extract all the water from the body. The water is then given to the victor of the duel.
There are some changes the film makes here.
In the novel, the fight occurs in the Cave of Birds, a cave where the Fremen store water. Jamis and Paul remove their stillsuits for the fight. Because they sweat during the fight, the victor is given the loser's water to recover what they lost in the fight.
This is one of the few times in the film where I am not happy about changes being made. There are other things that happen in the Cave of Birds that hit the reader emotionally.
The shield-lore is a whole thing... as are the 'House Atomic Weapons' which only get passing mention.

The Spice is a reference to Oil. The spice trade at its height was not controlled by Great Britain it was controlled by The Ottoman Empire the Middle Eastern colonial power,they had a strangle hold on spice from the mid 16th century till the 18th century with the advent of the East India company. Like most Empires when it stopped expanding the internal pressure started pulling the Ottoman Empire apart with the First World War leading to its End and the Middle East falling under European control this lasts till the Second World War when in accordance with the North Atlantic Treaty the old colonial powers gave or where forced to give up those places.
