Funny thing is that there was supposed to be an official 3DS Sonic Mania port, but it was only mentioned in the fine print of an early trailer and it was never mentioned again. Kinda weird considering how well this port works, they definitely could’ve gotten it to a releasable state had they continued work on it.

I am still surprised it was never officially ported to the Vita. The system still had smaller games being released for it in 2017, and it could have been a cross-buy with the PS4.
There's also a wii u port of sonic mania which is surprisingly playable now... probably one of the best versions (despite being unofficial) since you can play it without the TV like the switch version on the gamepad.. Its interesting how it runs so well despite the weak cpu on the wii u...
well the whole game isnt that resource intensive. the whole game is like 300mb tops and the 3D sections have sega saturn styled graphics with models made of like 300-ish tris when the Wii U handles botw with a link model consisting of more than 10000, so theres plenty of processing power that can be put to use on turning the RSDK file into usable data, which the 3DS struggles with, evidently.
Hey, as a tip for future handheld videos: There's cables with 3.5mm headphone jacks on both sides, that way you can record the 3DS audio directly and don't need to have additional music ontop! =)

I've played it and it is absolutely incredible it runs surprisingly well, only gripe is the near comically slow 3d stages like *dear god*, hope they fix that in a future update

Wow, for a 3DS port this is very impressive, the frame rate is perfect, no delays, and most of all 0 lag hardly. The only thing I would say is the 3D parts, and yes I know it’s the 3DS and it can handle 3D but this type of 3D I would expect to handle. But enough nitpicking. As far as I know the main issue is that the 3D is not GPU accelerated which isn’t really an issue on PC since they are so much more ridiculously powerful but on a 3DS which can barely handle any kind of shaders or more than like a few dozen 3D objects with GPU acceleration, it quickly becomes an issue.
I did the process, the one downside is the atrocious load times, because the 3ds uses a very cheap harddrive. When in game it runs perfectly, with the notable exception of the ufo chase minigame, where it is quite slow and frame-by-frame. However it gives you time to react!
I think a good possible way loading times could be reduced is to lower the poly counts on the 3D models in the special stages to compensate for the 3DS performance (and this shouldn't be impossible to do thanks to the decompilation)
Sadly it's only for new 3ds. The release page mentions a possible future release for the old one, I hope they really do it. In the meantime, I'll be playing it on my wii u.
No, there was no official 3DS port ever planned. Renegade Kid (developers of the Mutant Mudd series) offered to port it to the 3DS after Sega initially announced it was only coming to PC, Xbox One, and PS4. Nothing ever came of those efforts simply because Sega had no interest in bringing it to the 3DS, because a NX (later known as Switch) port was in the works anyway.
Well that is pretty cool that you got it to run on a 3DS, not like you would need to but still pretty cool. I think it makes a lot of sense that a 3DS could run the game pretty well though just because the game itself just isn't a very demanding game. I mean it looks like a 16-bit Sonic so of course a 3DS could handle that, however of course it's definitely more crisp and better looking than that Genesis games as well it's just you know it still looks 16 bit which yeah it doesn't surprise me that the 3DS can handle that.

If it's decompiled that means it should be possible to go into the code and try to optimize the bonus stage for performance. 3DS can probably handle it perfectly fine it's just that this code is meant to run on a PC so some rendering effects and elements are probably turned way up compared to how 3DS usually optimally renders 3D.
Omori was supposed to be on 3DS too, but went to the switch because the 3DS was too old So I kinda want to see if something like that may show up at some point
The reason why this exists is because fans had enough interest in the game to decompile its code (which is a long, painstaking process) and then port it to other systems.

hey man if you have a new 3ds you should try and using a ftp server you should be able to transfer files without removing the micro sd card ( i have yet to do it )
Oh there is an updated version now? I actually completed Mania on PC and on Switch too minus collecting all emeralds. The release I tried for the new3DS (doesn't work on the old one, sadly) had some bugs and glitches tho.

Even CTGP-7 had a bit of lag at the start of the race if i remember. And worst, you cant do NTR stream. With NTR Stream you can do awesome stuff like "playing" 3ds on the Wii U

I would’ve played this on my 3DS way more than anything else. I’ve put so many hours into Mania on pretty much every system though. The most on Switch. Second most probably PC because of mods. And third most PlayStation. I might have it on Xbox but tbh I don’t remember because I barely play my Xbox. 😂
Year later but i'll explain, This isn't emulation or anything like that, it's a native port made for 3ds which takes an absurd amount of effort to do, and most likely has no optimizations, for a game designed to run on hardware nearly 50x stronger than it it's kind of impressive
