Swimming is amazing. I’ve been an athlete my whole life but never learned how to swim. I just started taking lessons and it wasn’t until swimming that I truly properly learned how to control my breathing. A great help indeed.
Underwater audio is a great idea. No less than three times have I been disturbed by somebody drowning. Each time I felt compelled to help. Had I had underwater audio, I would’ve been none the wiser and able to complete my workout uninterrupted.
Face floor, half head above waterline, one eye and ear underwater when breathing, arms at 1:00 and 11:00 when swimming, enter water with middle finger, extend on movement with shoulder, when you pull back pull with everything in your arm and shoulder, flutter kick;foot pointed straight short fast? Body rotates side to side to maximize stroke, stretch as far as needed
@@randallolson7630it's because 'freestyle' is the name of the competition category with few restrictions on stroke. You could do a doggy paddle if you wanted. The stroke itself is a front crawl but it's become synonymous with freestyle because it's the fastest stroke so it's the one people use in that category.
I need one step before. I struggle to breath out under water and rapidly breathe in in a short time above water without getting water in my mouth nose etc., occasionaly choking or getting air in my stomach etc. Is that not something beginners struggle with? :D
Perfectly normal for beginners, yes. You can practice by standing in the shallow water and leaning over so that your back and face is in the water, perhaps one hand outstretched to the wall edge (coping). Turn your head to the side, without lifting the head, take a good breath, return to facing the pool bottom, and slowly exhale through the nose. Work on a slow, long exhale, starting with a 4-count, then try for 6, 8, 10 count. Whilst swimming, it's important to keep your head and neck in a down facing position, and to not lift your head up to breathe, only turn the neck, while keeping most of your head still underwater. Head down also helps keep your hips up, closer to the surface, which keeps legs from sinking. Work on being as high and flat in the water as possible, and reach out far with the arm opposite your breathing side, to increase the amount of time you have, for taking the breath.

this is exactly where I am at also! I can breastroke (w/breathing), and backstroke is slow but fine. And I'm not going near butterfly! But I want to learn how to freestyle, as I end up sucking in water after a few strokes. At the moment, I go up the pool using breastroke and switch to freestyle for the final 5 stokes or so. Not sure if this is recommended (switching strokes mid-lap), but it feels like the end of the pool is near and I can keep it relaxed. Then I will just switch over earlier and earlier until I can get 25m, and then 50m+. I guess one thing to remember is when you do freestyle, you probably travel faster than you think you are. You don't need to 'power it' (unless you are training for the olympics), and a relaxed and steady attempt will still look reasonably quick compared to other strokes? Another thing I might try is using kickboard (to work on legs and breathing), and then pullbuoy (to work arms and breathing), and then put it together
I love when I reach that synchrony with the water. The rhythmic woosh woosh woosh woosh and nothing else matters, it's nirvana. That's when I swim more effortlessly.

I just recently started swimming again after a LONG time of not doing it.....I'm fairly out of shape and I like swimming as a big guy because there's no impact on my knees or feet (unlike stupid treadmills :P ) Since I simply haven't done cardio exercises in a LONG time...my breathing is not very good when I'm doing physical activities. So, I sort of just figured how to move my legs enough kind of like you did in this video but not as consistent. I keep my head out of the water as I swim and kind of do the arm motions that you're doing in this video but I don't reach way back when my arms come back near my body...... When I'm done swimming I feel good and tired like I had a nice workout. Should I try to adjust my swimming to this? or am I ok for now?
Hi, maybe try getting a swimmers snorkel so your head can stay down and you won’t strain your neck for long periods of time while swimming. I just got into swimming and have trouble breathing on my side and the snorkel has helped me :)
These videos are great! I'm getting back into this after some years. My question is, is this a change from what used to be taught or am I just remembering wrong? I took advanced adult lessons and Master Swimming in the 1980s and I was taught to put the thumb in the water first, do a little scoop outwards to grab more water, and then move your hand under the midline of the body, so the whole underwater phase is more of an S shape. So that's the way I've been swimming ever since. Next time I'm in the pool I will try it your way. But I'm curious about when this changed and are there still people doing it "my" way?
Hi Tracy! Great question. The S pull was discredited in the 90s. While there may be older swimmers still pulling this way, the more modern pull should be taught nowadays takes into account shoulder health, rotation of the body, and the physics of the pull motion.

You say keep one eye and one ear in the water when taking a breath as if this is the most natural thing ever :/ this is precisely why I can't swim properly and can't figure out how to do and you must mentioned it in the passing lol
Great video, but taste and smell? Almost completely irrelevant to swimming, why include that in there? As chatGPT puts it: The sense of smell is not typically considered a critical factor in competitive swimming. In swimming, physical attributes like strength, endurance, flexibility, and technique are more significant. The ability to smell does not have a direct impact on a swimmer's performance in the water. Other senses, such as sight and touch, play a more vital role in navigation and pace management during swimming. The primary focus for competitive swimmers is usually on physical conditioning, technique refinement, and mental preparation.
My unvle says u can't learn swimming without drinking leters of water (my uncle teaches me to swimm) and yes i have ate the water and yes It's kinda tasty
Just turn your head and breathe... Haven't found a single video yet that teaches breathing. It's so f* difficult for someone who was never submerged yet
Freestyle swimming is NOT a style; it is category for competition in which a competitor can use any style he or she wants to use. The fastest style that is used in the freestyle category for competition is called the Australian crawl.

You say keep one eye and one ear in the water when taking a breath as if this is the most natural thing ever :/ this is precisely why I can't swim properly and can't figure out how to do and you must mentioned it in the passing lol
It's amazing what a brain is capable of indeed.. bu I think my brain isn't capable of that unfortunately 😥
Hi
Didn’t talk about the all important breathing aspect
to engage with the sense of smell, be sure to inhale through your nose underwater
Now I know my problem. I didn't use my sense of taste while swimming 😮
But no one - mentions pelvis conditions? Know when, and stop i.e. - skipp a, swim day.
Great video, but taste and smell? Almost completely irrelevant to swimming, why include that in there?
As chatGPT puts it:
The sense of smell is not typically considered a critical factor in competitive swimming.
Maybe it goes with the idea of "be one with the water" which makes people swim more relaxed, mindful, and effortless.
Are you a swim teacher?
😊
My unvle says u can't learn swimming without drinking leters of water (my uncle teaches me to swimm) and yes i have ate the water and yes It's kinda tasty
Justin Trudeau started teaching swimming
it’s only for adults😢
Your videos are commercials.
Just turn your head and breathe... Haven't found a single video yet that teaches breathing. It's so f* difficult for someone who was never submerged yet
I suggest watching this video! ua-cam.com/video/V1kdWWYdWEU/v-deo.html
Freestyle swimming is NOT a style; it is category for competition in which a competitor can use any style he or she wants to use. The fastest style that is used in the freestyle category for competition is called the Australian crawl.
At .54 your knee is too bent doing the kick and creating drag 😌
This video was awful. It felt like more ads than useful information. And you are annoying with your internet video body language and hand gestures.
