Under no circumstances put your own money on the line for their ads.. just explain it to your clients, that you like to get paid only if you bring them ROI - so they will get your expertise while you work for 'free' on their ad budget until you got them results, but never ever pay upfront for their ads.

Should ad spend be included in the price you ask to deliver your services or should it be seperate? e.g. some people say that you should say things like "I provide x service for x cost and then you decide your ad spend" (meaning that they pay you based on how much THEY think it is necessary to advertise...). We don’t have contracts, I don’t think they are an essential element when starting.
