I'd argue that guy's goal was becoming an astronaut right from the start. Becoming medical personnel with military discipline made him very appropriate as an astronaut
Exactly
I had a very similar thought -- seemed like a very savvy career strategy, particularly as we don't know his specialty either as a Seal or as a doctor.
I thought the same thing. It's like all the things he did in his life was to score full marks and collect all the possible extra points for becoming an astronaut.
he actually got a bachelors degree in mathematics before even becoming a Navy Seal lmao. So this guy is like a mathematician, Navy SEAL, doctor, and astronaut

*EDIT:* I know, I know guys, completing a bachelors in math doesn’t make you a mathematician, that requires PhD and years of research etc etc, I was just making a point of his accomplishments.

"I can sense the fluffiness in your art" -Eddy Chen, 2021
I love the story of when Beethoven met Rossini and basically told him you’re only good at comedy stick to that. Also Rossini said his Italian was better than expected.
Rossini's translator (Carpani) responded to Beethoven by telling him that Rossini did in fact write some serious operas (Otello, Mose' etc) and Beethoven aswered that, yes, he knew those, but that you see, serious opera is not for Italians, because they don't sufficient musical doctrine to deal with real drama. If you read Rossini's account of the story he didn't feel particularly offended.
I am Italian, and i must say i agree with Beethoven. For some reason music wasn't seen as a serious art in Italy. If i had to take a guess it is because music in Italy was seen as entertainment where as in Germany it was still a religious art. Luther tried to distance religion from all art, but he made an exception for music and i think that imprinted in the German mind this idea that music could be used for higher things, and wasn't just mere entertainment like it had become in Italy, and that idea stuck even when music moved away from a strictly religious context.
@@sophiaperennis2360 Very cool! I feel like there is a bit of that separation of church and art except music in the English speaking world too by way of Handel.
Haha much like Rossini’s Barber of Seville eclipsed Paisiello’s, Verdi’s Otello eclipsed Rossini’s. So I’ve seen Verdi’s Otello but none of Rossini’s serious operas.
*mocks Rossini as an Italian*
@@toric6005 I think England had the opposite problem. That unlike the Lutheran Church in Germany, where music was seen as a serious art because of Luther, the Anglican Church in England didn't actually see music with favor at all.
I remember in fact that Handel had to face a lot of criticism when he ran his Italian operas, which were considered to be decadent and lurid by English society. At the time, the most popular Italian composer in England was Francesco Geminiani, and that's because Geminiani followed the model of Corelli which was a kind of music that was actually fit for church use and didn't offend the religious sensibilities of the English.
Things turned around for Handel when he switched to the Oratorio, which was in fact very well recieved.
This prejudice against music might explain why England didn't produce many homebrew composers after Purcell, and had to import several from continental Europe.
There's a guitar composer, Mauro Giuliani, who was friends with Beethoven and Rossini as well
I love the confidence in the "they did it my way"

That's why you don't let other people touch your instruments >.
Liszt and Beethoven actually met when Liszt was only 11-years old.
I don’t know how legit this info is but my 50-year old piano book says that ”Later little Liszt achieved even greater success when Beethoven heard him play. Beethoven was so enamored with Franz's magnificent technique, that he got on stage after the performance, hugged the child and kissed him on the forehead.”
That’s cool! I enjoy asking people if you could time travel, which composer would you like to watch playing his own music at the height of their powers, Beethoven or Liszt? I think I’d choose Liszt but I enjoy the idea of messy Bethoven absolutely destroying flimsy early pianos.
Wait, hold up. I think I have this exact book you're talking about. Is it red in colour?
The version of the story i heard is that Beethoven's secretary had to beg Beethoven to meet the young Liszt. Eventually Beethoven relented, and when Liszt presented himself to him, Beethoven just looked at him with a frown in his face and asked him to play several difficult passages. Liszt performed them all with ease, and that's when Beethoven smiled for the first time and patted him in the head.
Of course in modern times Beethoven would be arrested for child abuse...
Wow than Beethoven HEARD him him play. With his EARS. That WORKED. And belonged to a man who was capable of HEARING.

Speaking about the story of Liszt and Beethoven, both of them were students of Antonio Salieri, who was Mozart's contemporary composer and his supposed rival. Both of them loved Mozart, however, and his influence can be seen in their works. Also, Liszt loved the music by Beethoven. Apparently he loved Beethoven so much that he was the first one to actually play Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 29 in Bb major "Hammerklavier", which was at that time the most technically and musically challenging piano sonata, in front of a large audience. He also transcripted all of Beethoven's Symphonies for solo piano, and adopted the structure of 'Prelude' and 'Fugue' from him. So, we can say that all composers are inspired by older composers.

Mozart did hear a teenage Beethoven play the piano at some point! Mozart were apparently very impressed by his playing and foresaw a great future for the younger musician, commenting that "one day the entire world will talk about him".
Beethoven himself actually went to a recital where a young Franz Lizst played. They were introduced and Beethoven (even though deaf) had been so taken by the performance that he gave Lizst a kiss on the forehead
8:28 I was waitiinggg for this reaction ever since I saw those. Some of my fav fanart ever :')
Liszt did actually meeting Beethoven when he was 11! Liszt had always admired Beethoven ever since he was a child, but at the time Beethoven disliked “child prodigies”, and refused to meet with Liszt.
It was lucky that Liszt’s teacher teacher Czerny happened to be Beethoven’s student. Being the wonderful teacher he was, Czerny kept insisting and finally made the meeting happen.
So you have a 11yo Liszt, who was somewhat shy, walking into his long-time idol’s house with his teacher, while Beethoven sort of grumpily sat by the window.
Liszt played the piano for Beethoven, and as he was playing Beethoven would give him challenges, including spontaneously transposing a Bach piece into another key. Of course the meeting wrapped up with a Beethoven concerto. Beethoven must have been super impressed by Liszt because his attitude completely changed - he kissed Liszt on the forehead and gave him his blessing.
Liszt remembered this meeting all his life and was still emotional recounting it more than 50 years later.
I love how you mentioned the idea that people all over the world can sit on transport with sheet music and can read and understand it. It ties into the comment I wanted to make.
I live in a small southern town in the US and today, for the first time ever, I met a twosetter face to face. She was inside her kiosk at the gas station and I could faintly hear her music in the background (I'm losing my hearing for context) so I leaned in with my good ear to listen and was like "Oh! You're listening to Vivaldi winter! Sweet I've been listening to that one on repeat the last few days. Do you play?"
Her: "sort of I just started practicing.."
Me: "40 hours?" *hoping like hell she gets the reference*
Her "Every day! Plus all the lingling challenges!"
Me: "InTeReStInG!"
Then we both had a laugh. It was a great moment.

I can feel for the person who whose father cut off the power to keep them from playing on electric piano. I played the flute and piano from around age 9 until I was around 16/17 in high school... I wanted to do more and I really loved it. I enjoyed practicing and going to competitions and performing in concerts with friends, and I was even First chair through junior high and high school, but my parents didn't support it once it interfered with their church on the weekends, so one day, they took my loves and sold them to a pawn shop. They called my school and pulled me from band too... I've always loved music, but now I'm 34 and was never able to pick it back up again, and I've forgotten so much. I still long for my first love... I hope that some day we can be reunited again. I just recently got a used keyboard from a friend. I haven't played it yet because I'm nervous I've forgotten everything >

Reading scores: once went to a series of music appreciation lectures by a musicologist. Someone asked about a piece and she said "I haven't actually read that," then looked embarrassed and corrected to "heard that." She had revealed a secret.
Composers meeting: Haydn, Mozart, Vanhal, and Ditters von Dittersdorf played string quartets together. A singer who heard them said they were good; not great, but good. Probably Mozart and Ditters were too busy joking to be at their best.
