I was 13 when this movie came out. This ending and Rachel's performance showed me what love could be. Three decades later, I'm 23 years married and I still love my wife. I wish they still made movies for adults.
Jeff Bridges has remained fascinating through the years, because CHARISMA never ages! And what an incredible actor - he can play anything. I just saw him in a fab 1986 movie with Jane Fonda and Raul Julia 'The Morning After', playing a regular guy with a big heart (it's available free on YT, and I highly recommend it). He also played a fantastic villain in 'Jagged Edge'. I love the fact Jeff Bridges has been happily married to the same woman since 1977 - a lovely, humble guy, who has his head screwed on
Everything the 80’s touched turned to gold. You can feel the emptiness these days. Looking back on these clips is so frustrating. Beautiful but frustrating.
At this place in time (shot in 1982,and 83 ) Rachel Ward in my opinion was the most beautiful woman of the day. And watching her stand there with tears running down her cheek in the last minute of the movie was a truly memorable scene.
I was just born that year but loved the movie. About your statement...I can't disagree anymore. totally true and she was my phone wallpaper for a long while. The absolute gorgeous beauty of that instant of time
Bridges plays out the last scene so subtly. Very few actors could have done it that way yet convey to the audience what he's really feeling. The idea to keep the shot on ward while the credits and music run was a beautiful masterpiece. Breaks my heart.
I agree with the kudos for Jeff Bridges, just keep in mind it was great acting for Rachel Ward to keep your attention through the credits. Easier said than done! What has she been doing lately?
Girlfriend and I, met Jeff Bridges in Livingston, Montana just a 1 hour drive from Bozeman, Montana, in 2014 at a local bar where occasionally he plays for free entertaining the locals.... He lives there on a large cattle ranch spread.. Livingston is a artsy fartsy tourist town... At that time Margot Kidder of Superman "Lois Lane", lived there as well as other well known celebrities... Jeff Bridges, great guy, several autographs.. I work in the film industry, (film production).. A graduate of the University of Southern California School of Cinema Film and Television... Part of a 2 week vacation to see the families 5th Generation Scandavian cattle ranch in Augusta, Montana .. This movie, "Against All Odds", was at the peak of Bridges young career.. He was one of the major actors back then to audition for the part of Crockett on "Miami Vice" ..Instead it went to Don Johnson.. Mark Harmon former football star at UCLA QB (NCIS) was another major name considered for the part of Crockett.
Damn so sad, to see the power of her acting definitely puts a lump in the throats of all that watched this masterpiece. Damn I miss the 80's even though I was only 😉 years old when this movie came out. Much Love & ✊ to all my fellow 80's kids.
that's a naive comment. first, this is a neo noir film, one of the basic ingredients is the shrew who acts like this woman does- undoing male suitors who can't resist for some reason. second, even in the context of this film, she is flighty, wishy washy, in the end cares most about herself. if you haven't figured out women yet, this is what they are generally, some more than others, but all of them exist along the same spectrum of this sort of behavior
I dated a gorgeous girl w short hair along time ago . We had something but our lives were going in different directions so we just kinda parted ways after talking about it ,deciding to end it before it went any further . We never even had a fight and when I rented this movie months after separating from her,I remember being really affected by this film . This was definitely the first " romance " movie I ever really was taken by but the storyline is great and Rachel Ward and Jeff Bridges had a great screen chemistry . The Cozumel scenes are beautiful ,james Woods at his sleazy best and this ending shatters the heart every time. Classic film and incredible song by Phil.
Yes. There’s nothing spectacular about the visual effects and all, but a love story that some people in the world can relate to, Mexico, and cars!!! And truly, the ending is a bittersweet heartbreaker, if that’s even possible. 💔💔💔😭😭
Life only comes once in our lifetime .... to be honest so if you have some one you love n want badly dont waste precious time pondering whether I shud make that move just do it as you might regret it n if some trys to put a spanner in the works tell that person to sod off after all it's your life stay safe all xx 👍😉😄😘🖤
I Never get tired of this Movie, plus I Love the Song..! The Supporting Actors in this Movie were great, James Woods, Doren Harewood, Alex Karas and Awesome performance by Richard Widmark..
this thing has killed me for years. not sure if it was my life or the circumstances or the movie. timeless lines, youre the only one who really knew me....take a look at me now....etc...this movie and this song, damn good.
+Cristina Fornasiero Yeah, Oh, and funny I thought emotions and richness in life would not be so intense as time went by but, seems life is the ultimate gift
I think it was our age. I must've been 10 or 11 but was a music junkie. And these images were always prevalent even though I didn't watch the movie then. It was the 80s. Our time. Poignant.
I remember the commercials for this movie as a kid and of course one of the best love songs. Finally bought it 2012 almost 30 years later. Never get tired of this movie.
the mix of emotions is something you don't see today - from someone who has a dark and complicated situation, first trying to put on a brave face, looks away cries... looks up showing vulnerability.. regains composure smiles to show she is alright -looks away to focus on her own business - brushing away a tear and then looms up contemplating what the future holds before remembering who she has to be and looks again totally impassive..and business like
On one side you put the whole movie and on one side you put this ending scene. I bet the shirt on my back that this scene is worth watching 10 times over the whole movie. How can anybody not cry and fall in love with this marvelous beauty!
I'm a guy going through a break up and this song really hits home. It says so much about the feelings I am having right now. Mary, I will always love you.
Loved the movie and , needless to say, the song is unforgettable, beautifully sung by Phil Collins. RACHE WARD was such a beauty. This movie and THORN BIRDS -- she is cast with Richard Chamberlain -- placed the Australian beauty as one of my most admired movies stars. .
In 1982 I was in college and vacationing ( really just playing beach volleyball ) on an island off the coast of Cozumel caled Isla Mujeres . While having drinks one night after dinner a bartender told me and a few of the other players to catch the ferry down to a small island just south of where we were called Cozumel where they were shooting a movie and they were looking for extras. He said you're guaranteed to get into the movie. After a bunch more drinks we decided that he probably had part ownership in the ferry and was just trying to increase passengers for profit. Turns out we were horribly WRONG !!! a lot of that movie was shot on that island of Cozumel.… And they WERE looking for extras… Had I listen to him who knows what a great story I would be able to tell today. Lesson > Always take your shot when your not sure because you never would have known what could have been .... Let me know what you think
Some of the best acting in any movie was the last three minutes of this movie. Rachel Ward is so beauitful, so full of expressions. Just some of the best.
This may sound crazy but I fell in love with Rachel's beauty & for the next 12 years I dated some beautiful women & talked most of them to get this cut !! But, they weren't her !!
For whom watched The thorn bird: Nobody crys at the set as Rachel Ward .Great movie with awesome acting performances.Thank you lifeofguenter for share it.
I was a teenager when this came out. I've always LOVED this song! And I've still not seen this movie. What a trip. From the comment section here I'm thinkin' I might've missed a good one. 🤔 Hmm...guess I need to watch it.
For all the years since this movie came out it never occurred to me this song is sung from Rachel Ward's character and her point of view, not Jeff Bridges. It came on the radio today and I thought about the credits rolling over the static camera shot of her and it hit me: this song is about her, not him. Gee, it only took 30 years to figure it out, sheesh.
Davedio Watch the video with Phil Collins: Each verse represents the point of view of a different protagonist in the love triangle depicted in the film.
Saw this movie about a month ago and wished i hadn't. Was a whole lot better when i remembered it back in the 80's. I wonder what Rachel Ward's character decided? Looked like she was thinking real hard on it.
If you people only knew how much it hurts to think about the 80's the way I do when I watch this movie...
This has got to be one of the greatest movie ending ever!
Coz of the song right?
Agreed
Rachel Ward , Beautiful Woman ❤❤❤
@@naveentiku3106 not just the song. Rachel Ward as well. A combination of both.
It’s all-time amazing. Too bad the rest of the movie is lame (aside from Rachel Ward, Jeff Bridges, and the locations)
"Remember, you're out of her life." "I figure that's up to her. You can't control us forever." [Cue the tears...]
I was 13 when this movie came out. This ending and Rachel's performance showed me what love could be. Three decades later, I'm 23 years married and I still love my wife. I wish they still made movies for adults.
Phil destroys with the greatest power ballad of all time.
For sure!
Agreed
Disagree... I love this version...
The pain from his 1980 divorce fueled so much great music (unfortunate for him, fantastic for us).
I'm so used to seeing Jeff Bridges as a grizzled old man that i forget he was ever young. This man had the juice
And in TRON he was kinda young
He's gorgeous in this
Jeff Bridges has remained fascinating through the years, because CHARISMA never ages!
I love the fact Jeff Bridges has been happily married to the same woman since 1977 - a lovely, humble guy, who has his head screwed on
In this movie and The Fabulous Baker Boys, he was FINE!!!
She has been married to Brian Brown since 1983 ... now THAT is against all odds. Touche!
Man u know how old your getting when u look back at great films like this with great fondness ;)
Bridges was a stud in this movie....I've tried my hardest to look like him in this movie for years! Freaking Bad-Ass.
Jeff Bridges is THE man.
Now THAT... is a beautiful woman.
Watch Rachel Ward expressed herself through smiles and tears. A good movie.
A young Rachel is one of the most beautiful women ever walked on this earth!
Agreed.
True
Everything the 80’s touched turned to gold. You can feel the emptiness these days. Looking back on these clips is so frustrating. Beautiful but frustrating.
This is by far one of the greatest and saddest ending ever. Five thumbs up especially to Rachel Ward.
None cryes in a movie as Rachel does. Unforgettable.
I Played this song on the Radio during my Disc Jockey Days, still Love it to this day, one of Phil Collins Best..!
At this place in time (shot in 1982,and 83 ) Rachel Ward in my opinion was the most beautiful woman of the day. And watching her stand there with tears running down her cheek in the last minute of the movie was a truly memorable scene.
Heartbreakingly beautiful. Perfect casting for the woman all the men are obsessed over.
I was just born that year but loved the movie. About your statement...I can't disagree anymore. totally true and she was my phone wallpaper for a long while. The absolute gorgeous beauty of that instant of time
They shot this part 23 times to get it right onions
😎😎😎
RIP Doug Fasion.......love you pops
gorgeous ending. She's so beautiful
Awesome closing shot.
It sure is, and one hell of a woman.
See also Sharky`s Machine, she plays Domino.
The best ever indeed! My youth love Rachel Ward... ❤️

Jeff Bridges is The Man. Great actor, and by all accounts, a sweet person in real life.
I agree with the kudos for Jeff Bridges, just keep in mind it was great acting for Rachel Ward to keep your attention through the credits. Easier said than done! What has she been doing lately?

By the end of this movie, that song hit me and I felt like I was walking away from her too..... Absolutely gutted.
"I figure it's up to her". 100% correct !!!
for the last 20 years i am haunted by this scene...

Let's face it, the song Phil Collins did for this movie has long since eclipsed the film itself, just like with Two Hearts eclipsing Buster.
