Welcome to Demons of Shin Megami Tensei; a series where we look at the lore, design, role, and gameplay of demons from Megami Tensei. In this video we're looking at Metatron, a rarely mentioned but popular figure in Judaism and Christianity who is descibed as being the most powerful angel in Heaven and the voice of God.

random thought but isnt he robotic to symbolise he is an "artificial ángel" since god made him one instead of being bien as one? I just find the machine part as an analogy of being created or "crafted"

This makes sense to me. The other people who become angles throughout the series also look really robotic, where the likes of Michael, Satan, etc don't.

I figured he and some of the other angels look mechanical is because of their nature. They are the tools and gears that run the machine called life by YHVH. They say very few angels have self awarness, most care out their task.

I love the idea of some Christian kids playing a game and one of them is like “I’m metatron so I’m really big and can hit you with all of my wings” and the other kid goes “No, you can’t use big metatron, he’s not canon!”

Honestly, I thought the reason that Metatron (And the higher ranked angels by proxy) were robotic mostly because of the ties to the Law alingment. They're so directly tied to it that they're more like robots to the will of their master.
Speaking of robots, I can mention that in some of the appearances where their role is more minor Metatron is depicted as robotic in speech as well (I.E, SMT IV: Final).
Anyhow, good stuff, though I will mention that you should balance the Audio for the beginning to the rest of it. It's much louder than your voice, and it comes off as a bit jarring to go from the somewhat loud open to hearing your voice at a much lower level.

Some spoilers below for SMT 3, 4 and Strange Journey
Normally, I would agree, but then a question emerges: why aren't the likes of Satan and the Archangels robotic looking? As a matter of fact, most angels aren't robotic looking in the series.
My theory, which also doesn't make too much sense. I'll admit, was that the robot versions were reserved for humans that became angels. My reasoning is that the humans we see become angels throughout the series all share this trait. Chiaki (who, admittedly, seems more chaos, but is allied with the angels) looks rather robotic in her boss fight as Baal Avatar. SMT 4 (admittedly not the best source, since the artist was different) had Merkabah, who was a fusion of Joshua with the archangels. Then Strange Journey had Zelenin, who doesn't seem that robotic in Judge form but clearly shows it in Pillar form. Then, we have Sandalphon and Metatron, which were both stated to be humans who became angels (in SMT, at least. It's less clear in the original texts).
Besides, he expresses mechanical motions and emotes when used in persona games, especially the 5 where he unlocks arms and legs, makes his move, and heavily drops them back.

Here's how I saw it @Nyarly. I saw Metatron in SMT being mechanical as showing he's an artificial angel. All natural Angels are made by God, but Metatron and Sandalphon used to be human and became Angels at one point, intern they are unnatural angels.
That's also the case for every human that became an angel that I can think of. Granted. I have not played every game in the series, but

Besides the original conception designed by Kaneko, that Metatron is the "obedient machine of God",
there's another personal interpretation about him.
In Jewish folklore, or mainly in 3 Enoch,
He was an exalted mortal who was transformed into an angel and act as an intermediate "heavenly regent" between divine and mundane, between "mortal" and "immortal".
The robotic appearance would reminds me of Ghost in the Shell, sort of a science fictional echo, the possibility of being immortal, is to become a cyborg or anything like that. And a metaphor of reaching divine/immortality in a modern view.
Also, Metatron is not so welcomed and needed in traditional Judaism, if my memory is correct. Rabbis and believers of God don't need such a subordinate angel to be the mediator between them and God. God is the greatest, the only master of universe, humans should contact with "Him" directly, who care that suspicious human-angel guy?
So Metatron got sixty fire lashes when a rabbi mistaken him as a god (It's from 3 Enoch and a Jewish folklore: The four who entered the pardes), and was refused by God when he was trying to mourn and cry for God's agony due to the destruction of Temple, which are the reflections of the major view of canonical monotheism.
Though Metatron is always a flat character in the whole Megaten series, in reality, he still possesses some conflicting attributes, very interesting, and amusing.
Metatron is the most interesting angel, imo. Also he is immune to almost all elemental attacks😊

Metatron and Sandalphon are considered twins because they are the only two humans to have been reborn as angels by the choice of God. However, other than that they are not related.
When you asked suggestion for what demon we would like to see next, I answered Phoenix as my choice for this.
However now that I've been thinking about SMT series, one very major thing did came to my mind: Devil Summoning Program.
I've seen lore videos about different demons in Shin Megami Tensei & I loved them all, however I don't think there has been a deep, detailed lore analysis about the computer program, that started this hole thing.
If possible, it could be a awesome video to see about the Devil Summoning Program, because these is a'lot of material to cover:
-like it is a computer program.
-These equipment that is used to summon demons.
-How people got these (SMT1 for example, you get it by email from Steve).
-How it was created & how it works.
-All the variation throughout the series.
-Other characters, that used this (others than main hero).
I know this has a'lot of stuff to cover, however if possible, this could be a very good idea as an lore video, that could open the gate for more possibilities in Shin Megami Tensei series to discuss.

Eh, I wouldn't place too much stock in grade. Michael at 90 seems way too high in that game. Also, going purely by grade, Masakado would be worse than Metatron, but that... doesn't make any sense.
@@michaelbesser5348 Grade in SMTDX2 makes no sense, Metatron is the Highest, above even Lucifer.
Sandalphon and Beelzebub are very mid graded, and in no game were they portrayed as THAT inferior to Michael (or inferior at all).

He's not wrong though; though it's a widespread tradition in the Orthodox Church, it isn't in the Bible, either the narrow or wide canon traditions.

@@SonofSethoitae I know that, it's just there are so many other accounts in other books and teachings, and combined with what scripture already says, it becomes Tradition. Because if you only go the Bible, many Traditions are lost.
My guess is that's why it's called the Assumption, she is assumed to have instantly rose to heaven, overcoming death.
Similar to how Christ is assumed to have conquered death by accepting it, going through hell and proclaiming it is only a part of someone's journey to accept death.
The Bible doesn't specify the harrowing of hell mostly because no one would have seen it, yet it is still Tradition.

Metatron is my personal favorite demon angle , in SMT. Anytime I can use it I do. The design is amazing and this lore video was great to listen to.
Why are angelic figures still called demons in SMT?
In SMT, demons is a blanket term for otherworldly beings. Basically anything that isn't from the Earth is considered a demon.
I think because in ancient greek Daimon, which is the original word for Demon, simply means a particular kind of spirit. which was theorized by Plato (or Aristoteles? Don't remember) to be an expression of oneself that we inherently have or even that we can choose. This I think is what is themain inspiration of the SMT and the Persona franchise.
Demon became an expression to call bad unholy beings, because the Judeo/Christians don't like a lot of pagan stuff.
From what I understand, in SMT, demon just means any supernatural being that is capable of harming or interacting with a human. So even YHVH would be considered a demon.
I think the mechanic style is a reference to the Law alignment. They believe in God's words so much that they have lost free will of their own being only machines to follow orders from Him

I forgot where I read this but I saw someone speculating that after Lucifer betrayed YHVH he no longer trusted beings of the flesh so he created his replacement for Helel as robotic to avoid betrayal. I thought it was a neat idea. Cool video on my favorite SMT demon.
Fun fact: In Strange Journey Redux, Metatron's sound is that of a mechanical robot. He doesn't talk.

In SMTIV lucifer comments on the robotic nature of the angels and i feel they were depicted this way because God essentially made them to obey him mindlessly something a robot would do

So Nocturne has been a weird vision quest. Metatron claims that my soul is black and that I am evil incarnate. But as I learn about SMT lore, I find out that Metatron is basically a robot. His auto tuned voice being a dead giveaway.
So it has me questioning if I am really evil or if I’m just different, albeit slightly more violent and a little less caring about old friends given the situation I’m in.

I mean, neither Nyarly nor the games are the first to propose this, though again, Metatron also does not appear in the majority of canonical Abrahamic religious texts.

The reason he is robotic is because in Judaeo-Christian Mythology, angels only make one free choice in their lives.
That choice is whether or not to follow God.
Because he chose to follow God, he has no free will.
The robotic design is symbolic of this because he is required to live by God's commands perfectly like a computer has to run the commands and functions of the programmer.
In Islam (well one of the two main branches of it) Angels are said to have no free will at all, so I've always liked the depiction of angels as robots, it kinda fits because Islam is also an Abrahamic religion

Just as a sidenote, the prevalence of robotic angels and whatnot in SMT has been speculated to be because machines are orderly and so the judeo-christian pantheon in SMT is loaded with them because they represent their end goals of robotic perfection and obedience

I think the reason that Metatron and the other various angelic creatures in SMT are depicted as robots is because of Japan's view of Christianity and the angels are just puppets of God. That's just my take on it, though.
