If i recall correctly, Top Gear challenge was supposed to be different at one point in development. You were supposed to have a 1v1 race with The Stig himself. A leaked QA build of GT5 from August 2010 further proved this.
Fun fact: The lunar rover shares the same engine specs as the Nissan Leaf in the game files. Granted it has an extremely low "RPM" limit to compensate and make it more accurate. If you apply a racing transmission and change the final drive, you can hit around 40 mph on a flat surface. I should know, it's one of the features of my mod, the GT6 Performance Mod. I've thought about adding a lunar rover race tbh.
One special event that I ever wanted to come to the series, but never did, would have been the 'Top Gear Sabine Schmitz Challenge'. In regards to the episode where Jeremy Clarkson was barely able to beat 10min on the Nordschleife in a Jaguar and Sabine said: 'I can do that in a van!' and with all the vans added lately, I really feel the need of: Run a lap on the Nordschleife in a Transit Van in under 10min (maybe with an additional Zakspeed Viper as pace car spending slip stream) with tourist traffic driving around.
Forza Motorsport 4 also had Jeremy Clarkson, ex-presenter of Top Gear, commentate over various cars in Forzavista. Literally no sign of any presenters appeared in GT5.
The Lunar mission is near the top of my personal ranking purely because of the audacity behind it. It reminds me of Hideo Kojima's stuff, especially post-Konami. A lot of his decisions can be explained as "Because I can" and while that can have negative consequences, I can still appreciate that over the same cookie-cutter shit. Which is more than can be said for the Top Gear one. I'd argue that one deserves the bottom position. Forza managed to be truer to the spirit of Top Gear twice over. Hell, Dirt 3 didn't even have the license and created a better special event by recreating the bobsled vs Mini challenge. So what's Polyphony's excuse?
I'm legit surprised why they didn't attempt something like the reasonably priced car segment for the top gear challenge. I mean, it's not better than just 3 races but come on
I really fondly look back on the moon driving event, but at the same time, the low ranking seems fair. Remembering all these really makes GT7 feel kind of dry in comparison.
