I once felt uncomfortable when a French asked me if we speak any French. I only replied some, as an optional foreign language like English or Chinese but didn't bother to give a full answer :) but in general I am very glad that us younger generations have been able to forgive and become friends nowadays. I respect that you were able to complete the tour and felt what you felt.

I almost bursted into tears when I learned about what they did to female prisoners on my visit to Hoa Lo. It's beyond cruelty and you just can't understand why someone would do that to a living person. I totally understand why he felt uncomfortable.
@@chrisx5127 when they on period, they are not allow to have pad. Instead, they have to tear their clothes . And they have to share to each other when there are no more clothes and reuse them over and over again. Also, they have to use their urine to wash it. Most of them lost their ability to give birth after release from prison.

It's quite new to me as this is the FIRST TIME EVER I saw a foreigner like you to mention the Vietnam's humanitarian policies in treating American pilots imprisoned here. Most of the time, even on small YT videos, they talk about how bad US prisoners were treated here and the "Hanoi Hilton" was actually an ironic name, like.....really ironic. I don't mean the Americans and other country's people are bad, but it is certainly a pain in the ass to see the wrong information being spreaded that widely. Even if that's a small detail you added, I truly appreciated it. Welcome to Vietnam my friend.

I visited Hoa Lo prison 2 months ago. I'm Vietnamese, so at some point, I already knew the visit would be hard to handle. During the whole tour around the prison, I felt nothing but sadness., because the living condition there was terrible. Prisoners suffered from diseases and died. The audio guide made it even more realistic, a bit terrifying for me.

From Hà Nội here. I have been too busy studying or working so I have never, and in fact couldn't visit this landmark even once. Same thing for many of my friends. Maybe I should try once.
I went here yesterday alone. It was chilling to see all the craziness, and the amazing things us Vietnamese can do, at a cost of 15000 VND, less than 1 US$ (I am a high school student, and if you show your student card to the ticket seller you can get a discount, otherwise its 30000 for everyone else) and only less than an hour to wander through the entire place. Spare yourself sometime, you will not regret any second of it
It always in my mind how the American went home and even to this day like: “oh the Vietnamese torture them and didn’t feed them”. First: like the American were so nice to Vietnamese prisoner. What goes around come around. Second: Vietnamese soldier were barely have enough food. To the point they are happy every time they capture American K ration cause that mean they have good food to eat. Our own soldier, who died for our freedom barely get enough food for three meals a day. What do American expect? 5 star meal with the best beef steak and coffee?
If the Vietnamese government couldn't afford to feed the US POWs properly then why do they even mention their "humanitarian policies" towards US pilots. Like you said in war times, both sides will commit war crimes, even torturing and abusing their POWs, so why are you disregarding the American side of the story?
@CensoredCat I suggest the Vietnamese government to stop claiming that they treated their POWs so well and then using it to make them look better. The reason why the US didn't wage a "righteous humanitarian war" on Vietnam is because they were ALREADY in a war with Vietnam, a war to "fight" against Communism.

As terrible as it seems u can really blame it on the Vietnamese for feeling hatred for the prisoners that they held captive. The amounts of ordnance that was unleased in that 12 faithful days operation was enough to make any veteran pilot from the Allied bombing campaign of German heartland blush. As a Vietnamese, seeing the wreckage of a bomber that was designated to carry a nuclear strike that could wipe out a region bigger than Texas every morning i went for a bite is a surreal thing to think about sometime.
Fun fact: US pilots shot down actually were treated much better in prison compared to many Vietnamese prisoners. Not saying it was great, but could have been much more horrible
American soldiers were not treated well here lmao. My dad was held here for 6 months and his stories from that time will make your skin crawl. Especially the torture tactics

That is not true about being protected by the Geneva Conventions....This is a very painful memory for Americans....Much of the torture was done because the North Vietnamese stated that since the US never formally declared war that the captured were common criminals and could be tortured without any protection of the Geneva Convention...The Americans were subjected to some of the worst torture any human could think of and still suffer from their injuries today.
We Vietnamese people always remember history but no longer hold grudges we remember history to teach our children and grandchildren to fight when there is a foreign invasion

Hi you ! Vietnamese history is almost war that fight agains imperial and colonial forces. Vietnameses struggled nearly 100 years in order to reacquire freedom and dependance as now. I do sympathize and respect these orgulous historical pages.
American pilots are really lucky to be imprisoned by the Vietnamese army, they seem more peaceful than the Vietnamese when they are detained by the French there

You don't have to be sorry for the crimes of your people back then, that's like saying white people should feel bad because of slavery. If we use that logic then Vietnamese people should be ashamed of what the North Vietnamese government did to American soldiers and it's own people, same goes for Americans being ashamed of their government's crimes.

FYI, "Hỏa Lò" in Vietnamese literally means "Inferno" which is both Hell and A large pit of fire. Truly a dark time in our history.
Not accurate. "Hỏa Ngục" means "Inferno" in Vietnamese. "Hỏa Lò" is more like "The Fire of furnace"

I went here yesterday alone. It was chilling to see all the craziness, and the amazing things us Vietnamese can do, at a cost of 15000 VND, less than 1 US$ (I am a high school student, and if you show your student card to the ticket seller you can get a discount, otherwise its 30000 for everyone else) and only less than an hour to wander through the entire place. Spare yourself sometime, you will not regret any second of it

It always in my mind how the American went home and even to this day like: “oh the Vietnamese torture them and didn’t feed them”.
First: like the American were so nice to Vietnamese prisoner. What goes around come around.
Second: Vietnamese soldier were barely have enough food. To the point they are happy every time they capture American K ration cause that mean they have good food to eat. Our own soldier, who died for our freedom barely get enough food for three meals a day. What do American expect? 5 star meal with the best beef steak and coffee?
If the Vietnamese government couldn't afford to feed the US POWs properly then why do they even mention their "humanitarian policies" towards US pilots. Like you said in war times, both sides will commit war crimes, even torturing and abusing their POWs, so why are you disregarding the American side of the story?
@CensoredCat I suggest the Vietnamese government to stop claiming that they treated their POWs so well and then using it to make them look better.
The reason why the US didn't wage a "righteous humanitarian war" on Vietnam is because they were ALREADY in a war with Vietnam, a war to "fight" against Communism.

As terrible as it seems u can really blame it on the Vietnamese for feeling hatred for the prisoners that they held captive. The amounts of ordnance that was unleased in that 12 faithful days operation was enough to make any veteran pilot from the Allied bombing campaign of German heartland blush. As a Vietnamese, seeing the wreckage of a bomber that was designated to carry a nuclear strike that could wipe out a region bigger than Texas every morning i went for a bite is a surreal thing to think about sometime.
There's something deeply ironic about a French guy seeing a guillotine first time in Vietnam.

Fun fact: US pilots shot down actually were treated much better in prison compared to many Vietnamese prisoners. Not saying it was great, but could have been much more horrible
American soldiers were not treated well here lmao. My dad was held here for 6 months and his stories from that time will make your skin crawl. Especially the torture tactics

That is not true about being protected by the Geneva Conventions....This is a very painful memory for Americans....Much of the torture was done because the North Vietnamese stated that since the US never formally declared war that the captured were common criminals and could be tortured without any protection of the Geneva Convention...The Americans were subjected to some of the worst torture any human could think of and still suffer from their injuries today.

You don't have to be sorry for the crimes of your people back then, that's like saying white people should feel bad because of slavery. If we use that logic then Vietnamese people should be ashamed of what the North Vietnamese government did to American soldiers and it's own people, same goes for Americans being ashamed of their government's crimes.
