A fantastic overview, detailed review, helpful user notes (especially regarding the prep case), and all around comprehensive assessment to help us with Luna bulbs in the field. Thank you!
As always, a great job on the review. Thanks Andrew Lock. When I first heard about the luna bulb, I ordered immediately... I work, as a gaffer, on a TV series set in the 1950s, and the luna bulbs fit 100% in the old practicals, making my life easier... I hope astera comes with an E14 model as well.
I watch light reviews on this channels for products that I don't have any intentions of buying, but it is still interresting to see your perspectives on where which product will get used, and to see where the lighting industry is going...
Plan on picking some of these up... the fact it looks like a normal bulb and has those attachments is huge, plus the price seems reasonable. The output is my only concern.
What are your thoughts about the brightness? I wasn't concerned until I took them out on set this past weekend. I had a single bulb in a household lamp with a standard white shade at 100% and with just a bit of ND on the camera, the lamp was extremely dim. Granted, I normally like the practicals to be pretty low but I was surprised by just how low it was. It worked for me but any dimmer at all and it would not have played. I have another Luna set on order and the levels have me rethinking. Everything else about this set, the size, the color, the controls, the operating case, I LOVE. But I can't help but wish this bulb was 2X brighter...
@@traviswears At the moment these have been about 50/50 for me. If the set is moody then no problem, if it's a brighter corporate or day seen these just don't have anywhere near enough fire power. In the situation where I don't see a bulb I use a DMG DASH for the firepower
Great review as always, Andrew! I would love to see what is your opinion on the Amaran Ace 25c lights. I believe the price and the amount of light output puts them in a singular position on the market, and would be super interesting how they compare with the MC Pro.
It's so strange to me that Astera hasn't tried to tackle the battery problem and just taken that entire market from Aputure. The B7c is such a crappy fixture; but at the end of the day the internal battery is so crucial in so many situations.
Still think the « dome off option for small lamp shades » is non sense. Because they’re generally E14… Astera has put out Amazon like adapters, but they push the build up by at least 5cm. So counter productive
TBH the wattage is not enough. Most practicals I'm running are 100w bulbs, and although on a dimmer they do sometimes need to be at 100%. I'm still disappointed that there aren't any other B22 options out there besides these.
@@vontd9 My go-to for lighting up a practical, if we don't see the bulb, and we want tunability is a DMG DASH. Nothing else seems to have the firepower.
@@gaffergear We use the Dash for this too but for the times when we do see the bulb, I'm looking forward to using the Lunas. Just got a set in and I love all things Astera when it comes to build quality and menu. I do wish these were 2X as bright but for most purposes we are dimming the practicals way down anyhow or just need it to register as on without adding a ton to the room.
I’m here from Luke’s Channel. Thank you, Andrew. This is a great detailed overview. I appreciate the work that went into it.
@@MarcosElMalo2 thank you. Luke is a good friend of mine

Thanks Andrew for putting so much effort in to this nice Review of the LunaBulbs and there Accessories!

Thanks for the super in-depth video review Andrew!

An E14 version would be nice

Interesting that you mentioned the power factor !
Are you going to review the Aputure 1200x by chance?
@@AvatarRishi I'm currently testing one. It's been a week and a half of testing so far, seems like a sweet unit
that's cool you can make them appear to be the same, these and the nyx bulbs
Andrew, if compared to the Nanlite PavoBulb 10C, how about the pros and cons?

Can you address each of the two pixels individually to balance the intensity of the camera side / talent side of the bulb ?
@@barnabycoote no, I guess it's just the one light engine.

I yearn for a rgb led equivalent to a 500w photoflood bulb

@@filmdetective the E14 is definitely becoming more prevalent, especially if the practical lights are purchased at IKEA or Target.
