I ordered a couple of the standard (not Pro) Kelvin Play’s during the pre-sale. I’m just a hobbyist using them to add some nice color to my videos. Kelvin has made a couple of needed updates to the firmware since my purchase which addressed some of my initial concerns. They appear to be responsive to customer concerns and make firmware changes to address any issues that you bring to their attention. One thing that initially confused me was the 6 dot LED’s next to the battery logo. They have nothing to do with battery strength, but instead advance each time you change a mode setting- i.e. they have no useful purpose that I can determine. I love the build quality of the lights and enjoy using them. Customer service can be a bit difficult as only chat seems get through and our time zones ( working hours) are quite different. They do get back to me if I chat when they are closed, however. I think you may have been a bit too harsh in your closing assessment. There are always new customers just starting out who are not already stocked with a complete supply of pocket lights.
I really want to try these out. I'll take a route like you did and wont spring on the entire kit, rather just grab a couple and test them out on gigs. I am a huge fan of CRMX and paired with hand lights it's made life so much easier. Bluetooth is a thing of the past.
18:52 I am testing the Kelvin Play Pro in CRMX and it seems to have latency compared to Nanlite Pavotube II XR. Also, it doesn't turn on/off as quickly, so it seems hard to make a good strobe effect. I wonder if the DMG dash is better on these two subjects? The video seems to see they are similar, but strobe isn't tested, and they are not tested against the fastest/more accurate light I found so far (Pavotube). Thanks!
Great review as always. I've had my kit since June, the multi shadows are nuts and the turning on when charging takes a bit of getting used to. I love the CRMX and the IP rating allows me to give them a good clean after they have been in oil soaked rangehoods 🤣. BTW I got 3 D90s and they are pretty close to the the D75.
Really great review Andrew! I do wonder if your final closing thoughts are true. I really think these are fantastic products, great build quality, great light quality, great thoughtful design. But a lot of folks have already bought a bunch of small lights like this already. I imagine that those people will not want to buy any more until their existing units start to fade and fail due to batteries in a couple of years time.
Great review as always. I have the 8x Aputure MC Pro charging case and units. Been a staple on my truck as I find myself using small kick and hand lights in almost every scene, very easy to hide. However I run into many CRMX problems with my MC Pro's. Not sure if its just a bad batch of Pro's I got but every single one of them sometimes connects through CRMX or just fails and I unfortunately have to run them over bluetooth. It's only my MC Pro's in my truck, all other large fixtures (Aputure Nanlux) connect flawlessly over CRMX, and this is after multiple CRMX Tool box firmware updates for the timotwo chip as well as internal software Aputure firmware updates...the MC Pro's still fail over CRMX...all of my other fixtures including Aputure MT Pro (Small bar light) work over CRMX straight to my Sidus One box...except for my MC Pro's, not a clue why they work 25% of the time wirelessly and most of the time not. These Kelvin Play Pro's might be a new alternative that I go through. CRMX is a huge plus and thing in my work field. You basically don't get hired if your not fully wireless setup with zero frequency emissions and flawless light control.
@@Carboxylated I had massive ass problems with getting the CRMX to work, but since the last firmware update it's be flawless. I do find that the battery run time on my 16 MCs is very inconsistent thou.
@@xx1simon1xxyeah no luck..as I said, I have factory reset all of mc pros and reinstalled the latest firmware’s. Its a build/hardware issue. The CRMX sometimes works and most times it fails and loses signal with in the open 10ft from my ipad. Its all of my mc pros. I think i just got unlucky and the 8x i purchased from aputure were just a bad batch. Idk but either way its been noticeable on high paying gigs.
I agree. I don’t own very many pocket lights, but probably my next big job I’d rather invest in some MC pros and Hydra panels. The MCs have that terrible built in smoothing but I feel like that could be fixed eventually with a good software update. The MCs 8-light kit also offers a lot more for very close to the same price as these. I like the stuff Kelvin is doing but they are pretty far behind the curve in their products. Also the Chinese market is accelerating in R&D. So they are going to be lost in the next few years to outpacing by Companies that are already probably working on replacements for their stuff that Kelvin is trying to compete with out already. Like what they are doing, but too little too late.
I noticed that too. I have two nova P600Cs, and, while they are great lights, I do find that they are about half a second behind any other light I throw into the mix which is very similar to what the MC pro was showing here. I’m not sure if it’s an issue caused by Aputures DMX smoothing or not, but it does limit their use cases just a bit when integrating with other brands.
@@cfl4286 it's a pain. if you are using blackout, you can set a delay to the other lights to get a match, but then you are half a second delay on everything if you are trying to cue to an action.
@@gaffergear didn’t know of that solution. May have a play around with that in blackout. That does seem like a tough challenge considering I’m usually taking my queuing audibly from someone on set which would make it tough to time everything up properly.
Great review. Imagine what the next wave of pocket lights will be.

Does somebody here know why the MC Pro does take so much longer processing the DMX cues?
