That’s unfortunate. There’s a reason why BTS members have been so inspired to rap; other meaningful, lyrical, creative and stylistic black American rappers. Appreciation of rap originators and innovators is important, and makes listening to BTS even more enjoyable because you can recognize references and homages and pick out where BTS members shine in their own style/voice on top of that. It’s never too late to find more artists that aren’t Korean but are the ones whose existence alone inspired Korean rappers to even exist themselves. I wish people stopped with the “bts is the only rap I’ll listen to” but get upset if people say “I don’t listen to Korean songs”. It’s dismissive and biased. Not saying that’s what you’re specifically doing but it’s something I notice under Agust D videos. I implore you listen to more hip hop.
There are more stories that have and are being told. And no, it’s not all sex and drugs and killing; just like how BTS aren’t all bubblegum tunes and love songs and happy lyrics.
I'm 66 almost 67. I used to like Eminem's rap, Coolio's Gangsta Paradise... but I wasn't A rap fan. Now, I loooove BTS' rap. It is as rap had to be. Meaningful lyrics that express rage against unfair situations.
Part of Suga’s disdain for pill-popping is that he actually needed them for pain management after his shoulder was crushed in a car accident. (he has no beef with legal prescriptions)
He tried to hide the injury at first for fear of being let go from the company (at that time, many kpop companies did not hold onto “damaged goods” and tossed them aside for something better).
His company was horrified when they found out and immediately took him to the hospital for help. But at that point, serious damage had set in. And they were launching the group and all its promotions and tours.
Suga decided to endure pain through various modes of pain management for seven or eight years (doing aaaaaall that choreography) but he really just needed surgery.
He finally did the surgery during lockdown when he was forced to slow down.
He does look down on rappers who pop pills just to do music and then don’t even have the skills to pull it off. Especially the ones who have come after him…

This was Suga of BTS. I was not a fan of Rap until BTS. My daughter took me to Agust D's solo concert in Chicago (May 2023). First, I never thought I would attend a rap concert and second, I never thought I would like it. But, his show was incredible! Not only can Suga rap, but he can sing as well. It was an experience I will never forget!!!!
I totally agree. I also went to the Chicago concert, only difference is I took my daughters. They had been long time fans of Big Bang, kinda hard to let go but they love BTS.
I was in Chicago, too, at the Saturday show 😁 I'm the one who is trying to drag my own kids into the fandom, though. My eldest came to see the Yet to Come movie just as an "OK, Mom, we'll spend time together" thing, and when I casually mentioned the D-Day movie was coming to theaters and if she wanted to go, she jumped on board immediately. She's now started sending me UA-cam clips to watch and other things that tell me she's researching BTS on her own time...everything is proceeding according to plan 😏😉😂

I'm not sure how much you know about Min YoonGi aka Suga/AugstD....but as you liked his MV then the following info might be of interest to you.
Suga/Agust D began writing music lyrics and working with MIDI at age 11 and held a part-time job composing and arranging music at a recording studio at age 16.
Active under the name "Gloss" (wordplay on his name YoonGi, which means "to shine") as an underground rapper in his hometown Daegu, He originally entered Big Hit Entertainment as a producer at age 17 and became the second member to join BTS..... At BTS debut in 2013 he was 20 y.o.... he is one of BTSs main producers/songwriters/composers and has over 150 song copyrights.... he also produces for other artists and has won awards for his work.... he is one of the fastest rappers in South Korea.
Suga (SHU-GA.... from Shooting Guard - the position he played in basketball) ...... AgustD = SUGA + DT (Daegu Town - his hometown) Spelt Backwards
Between his commitments as a member of BTS, Suga/Agust D took advantage of time on the plane and in hotel rooms after concerts to continuously produce, write and compose music.
In an interview for Grazia Korea, Suga/Agust D expressed a desire to release the music he wanted to do without having to consider popular appeal or music ranking. He intended to release his music for free in the form of a mixtape to avoid such considerations, commenting that an album "has a feeling of being trapped in some sort of framework" due to the need for company involvement in promotion and advertising. He has released 2 mixtapes - and last year released his first official album (of which he continues to maintain full creative control)
Developing Agust D musically on the base of hip hop, much of Agust D's inspiration for the lyrics came from his own stories of dream, youth, and reality. In order to differentiate his work from that of his work as Suga, he developed the alter ego "Agust D". He is best known for his honest hardhitting lyrics.

Suga is the main producer, songwriter, rapper. He came in as a producer but mr Bang wanted him to be in the group, so he had to learn to dance, both Rm and Suga was underground rappers
From the members he produces the most but BTS works with a big (writer and) producer team: first only in-house producer but with success also a lot of outsiders.
Min Yoongi is one of the main songwriters of BTS and his (former) designed poisiton was Lead Rapper which is slightly lower than Namjoon's main rapper. Not that that matter much anymore.
BTS rapline are rappers with a very different style so comparing isn't possible just a question what you prefer.
While I love them 🎉all. RM is the main rapper and has written more songs than Suga. The whole rap line has obviously written a lot. While Suga has produced more songs than anyone else. They all are talented.

Plus we all know that for almost every song, all the rappers write their own rap parts, no matter who wrote the lyrics of the song. And at this point won't it be more accurate to say that they are all the main rappers. They are just the rapline. There may be these titles that were given to them before, but today all three rap on like every track. And usually they are just know as the three rappers. To say main or lead at this point is pretty much moot, all you have to do is simply look at their music. Same thing for the vocal line as well really, at this point they are all just vocalist. The only one that may still fit that role is Jk, because of just how much he sings in the songs, including ad libs, etc....

Because there are and they all are main rappers and/ or vocalists at this point. Not to mention that the rapline sings sometimes, especially Jhope.
I mean I am just saying, why are we still trying to describe they with titles that were given to them so long ago. When we all know that they have all grown and changed, and evolved over time.
I find it appropriate that Suga brought a gun to a knife fight. It is metaphorical of his talent (and BTS' talent) in the industry. Most people just are not working with the kind of skills and genius they have. Other artists are just outgunned.
I'm a hip-hophead who got into BTS about a year ago and they completely blew me away. Suga aka Agust D and RM were both underground rappers before joining BTS and it shows. BTS' versatility is insane both in their group and solo songs you'd never think they all belong in the same group. Each rapper has a completely different style and their songs generally have very powerful poetic lyrics and deep meanings so it;s recommended you watch explanation videos after the songs because there are many references you wouldn't get on your own.
Suga reminds me so much of a younger Eminem in terms of life story, raw lyrics, and delivery. Continue exploring BTS and enjoy the journey these guys never disappoint 💜

Your what at the end had me laughing. BTS and their music is different. There is meaning and significance. And if you don’t have all the info it is confusing. SUGA is a story teller. It all means something. It’s a journey.
Suga/Agust D is THE genius rapper/musician of this generation! Notice how the music stays the same throughout, but it's Agust D's rapping that controls the flow of the song! Suga/Agust D is in conflict with himself in his trilogy. Daechwita, Haegeum, and Amygdala.

J-Hope actually left BTS because of the haters. He was afraid that he was holding the other members back. However, he came back after a few weeks. Suga and RM got hate from the Hip Hop underground saying they sold out. The K-pop fans said RM was ugly (he is not) did not meet the K-pop idol standards. It was to the point that RM was going to quit like J-Hope, but his father talked him out of it. Told him he did not want to live with regret. They have had multiple death threats. I believe the threats were aimed RM and Jimin. They actually cancelled a US concert in early days because of the threats Jimin received. Big Hits was afraid for the members safety as well as ARMY. This is just a fraction of the hate they received. Protest when they won awards because they were from such a small company. So much more.

I’m 59 years old and never cared for rap due to the content most rappers in America sing about! But after discovering BTS and then RM, Suga & J Hope I can say I absolutely love them! Their lyrics and vocals are amazing! This song is one of my favorites by Suga! He has a few clapping back at the haters!
When you learn more about them and what they went through to be where their at now you’ll understand why!
I live in Texas and last year I was privileged to Chicago with my two sons. They took their mom to see AgustD aka Suga in Concert! My youngest went with me! He was impressed! Suga put on an amazing performance! Last week they showed his concert at the theaters! Since it was a world tour they combined different concerts into one ! Reason they last three concerts held in Korea Suga had a special guest each day! Day one JungKook Day two Jimin and Day 3 RM. So it was really cool getting to see the same performance from Chicago with added performances of the boys!
You have a long way to go and a lot of amazing songs and performances to see! Each member of BTS is amazing on their own and outstanding together! Jhope said in an interview that it was fate! No truer words were spoken!
Hello, Texas girl, I am 60 and living here in Texas as well. Crazy you went to the Chicago concert with two sons, I went with my two daughters. They got me into K pop with Big Bang, not they are big BTS fans. I totally agree with your statement. I had no love for rap till BTS: Suga, J Hope and RM. OT7 but the rap line took me by surprise. 52 year old here...been an ARMY since 2014..the discography is very diverse and vast.
Since you like this mv, you need to check out his debut - Agust D/Agust D. It's a diss track to all the haters, in particular a Korean rapper named B. Free who was absolutely terrible to both him and RM (the leader and other main rapper). You will also hear how Suga (Agust D) is one of the fastest rappers in the game - and has no mercy - think of it as what would angry Eminem would do if he were Korean.
Fan Fact:
There is an US rapper with the same name.
He was misstaken by some Army and confused. So he went out looking and found out why that other person was disliked. I think the Korean rapper got in contact with him but was told of as the US rapper thought he was in the wrong.

Suga did a great song-by-song album review of D-2. Regarding who he is talking about and dissing in this song, he said if you recognize yourself, he’s talking about you! (don’t worry, it’s not about folks like you and me taking prescriptions for blood pressure, etc 🤣😂). Recreational Drug use is NOT generaly seen as cool in Korea, it is highly illegal and viewed as a weakness. Any singer or celebrity caught with it will be cancelled by public opinion and will longer be in the industry.

They've been around for nearly 11 years, so you have to take care to look at the date for every release. :-) BTS was literally founded with the three rappers.
"Daechwita" is by Agust D AKA Suga of BTS AKA prod. SUGA AKA Min Yoongi. He's a badass. Of the three rappers, he may be the fiercest. His most recent album is last year's D-Day and there's an entire documentary on Disney+ devoted to its creation. He was the second member recruited to BTS.
RM (Kim Namjoon) is the leader of BTS and its original founding member; the group was formed around him. "Do You" is one of his solo songs, from his 2015 mixtape RM. Another one is "Monster." His most recent album is 2022's Indigo. My personal favorite song from that album is "Lonely;" I love when Suga goes hard, but RM is a poet, so I tend to like his more mellow work, like "bicycle."
j-hope (Jung Hoseok), whom ARMY calls Hobi, is the third member and the third rapper. He was originally added to the group as a dancer; he's a phenomenal street dancer and the group's dance leader. He learned to rap from RM and Suga. He released "MORE" and "Arson" on his album Jack in the Box in 2022 and there are also documentaries devoted to his work; j-hope in the Box on Disney+ and hope on the street on Amazon Prime Video. He collaborated with J. Cole on "On the Street" in 2023.
The four singers were added after the rappers; in order: Jin, then Jungkook, then V and finally Jimin, another incredible dancer, but different from j-hope. They're all different and they've all released solo music WITHOUT leaving the group. The group has its identity and style; the individual members have their own too. They're free to pursue and make their own music, but they're 100% committed to the group as well. That's part of why they're unusual and interesting, even in K-pop.

He's definitely not against prescription meds, he takes some himself! I think the pill-popping line is more related to drug problems which are prevalent in the underground hip hop scene he comes from, though I'm not aware of it being aimed at a specific person. He had multiple friends who got into drugs and ended up making very bad choices, one ended up in prison, the other did a bunch of violent crimes and got himself killed. So I guess you could say it's a personal issue for him.

🇧🇷 August D/Suga had a difficult childhood. Parents issues, no money, no support, an accident ruined his shoulder (reminding that he needs to dance on BTS), many negative critics about his attitude (rapper can't be an Idol apparently 🙄), his lyrics... So, his talking mostly about media people.
After 10 years being a BTS member, he was gradually writing about friendship/ARMY/future. 😊

Also BTS received and still get an insane amount of hate for no reason IMO...but in the beginning I think it was because they challenged the status quo, they criticized Korean educational system and the people in power(government) they spoke about mental health which is still taboo in Korea .. they were from the super small unknown company who didn't really have the funds to promote them so they were just easy targets
They've been putting out Cyphers calling out their haters since their debut, actually! They've got 4 cyphers and they've got other tracks like this like Joke (RM), Do You (RM) or Agust D (SUGA/Agust D). There's also 욱 (Ugh!) from the Rap Line that talks about hatred in general and 땡 (Ddaeng). 땡 is a bit hard to get as international listeners but the song is really good!

Yoongi is very deep and philosophical, he hits hard, but with purpose. It's fascinating to come along on his journeys, basically weaving a war story of the battles he is fighting within himself and with his depression as he tries to figure out who he really is, as well as with the society that tells us who we should be.

Before he was in BTS Suga was an underground rapper. He and RM received a lot of hatred and mockery for becoming Idol performers. This is only one of the tracks that were an answer to this abuse. Another track in reply to those was Agust D, by Agust D

BTS have been receiving a lot of hate literally since their debut in 2013. Specially Namjoon (RM) and Yoongi (SUGA/AGUST D) back then bc they were underground rappers before and they end up debuting in an idol group. In the hip hop scene there were and there are nowadays a lot of prejudices about idols being just products or puppets of the companies bc they don't participate in the creation of their songs and stuff, they are just are performers which is true in a lot of cases but also it's important to acknowledge that idols in general still had to train really hard to debut for months and years.
So, Namjoon and Yoongi struggled questioning "who am i? and what do I want to do?" since they themselves used to have the same prejudices as underground rappers but they came with the conclusion that they don't really have to categorize themselves in a genre or something. They are just themselves. Because of this, BTS' artistic identity and discography became even more diverse and stronger.
That's why people have the discussion about if BTS is kpop or not. Kpop is an industry and like I mentioned before, it's not that common for idols to be artists, most of them are just performers. BTS since the beginning have been real artists and have participated a lot in making their own craft and taking care of having a voice and spread messages. The other vocal members got inspired by the rap line and lot and eventually they also got to participate in the composing, writing and even production process of many of their songs and now that they do solo promotions, their individual artistic identity and skills are shining even more!
BTS come from a small company, they never receive the support from the kpop industry and any industry and due to that they had to do so many things by themselves, things that were not the kpop common way. BTS literally paved their own way and openED so many door for everybody. So, I wouldn't say that BTS is not kpop it all bc they grew up in that ambient after all and did promotions in their shows too but everything tey did besides that goes beyond kpop. We cannot categorize them too as artists that do only hiphop, or pop, or EDM, or R&B, etc bc they have done it all and they keep experimenting.
